Fodor’s was acquired by Random House in 1986 and sold to Internet Brands in 2016.

The common criticism of Fodor's is that it is a bit too generic. I think that is so because it tries to be all things to all people, and makes measured judgments. But the advantage this volume has is that it contains detail on every place--versus Rick Steves, who is a bit more judgmental. For example, Steves is somewhat dismissive of Capri while the Fodor's guide contains more comprehensive information (and better maps) of what to expect on Capri. This book also covers Ischia and Procida. It also appears that Fodor's has "upped its game," likely due to the success of competitors such as Rick Steves, Lonely Planet, and the Internet, and so I would not dismiss Fodor's when planning travel.

The guide gives a little bit of information on just about everything you may need to consider when traveling to Italy's Amalfi Coast, Capri, and Naples. I enjoyed the brief descriptions that covered basics and key points. I wish they were more in-depth, but I can understand why they're so short. Each area could have so much more written about it. I enjoyed the colorful maps and pictures. However, I would have preferred more visuals if possible, but can understand the limitations for space.

I really like the in-depth sections that were included. The ones in this book included:
-The Amalfi Drive (drive along the Italian Coast from Positano to Cetara)
-Capri by Boat (Exploring the island by boat)
-Ancient Pompeii (History and a useful map of Pompeii)
-Walking Spaccanapoli (A stroll through the long street that runs through Naples's Centro Storico)
-Neapolitan Baroque (Information about the baroque art style and Naples)
-An Appetite for Naples (A glimpse into Neapolitan cuisine)


These little sections gave a lot more flavor and travel tips than the general information provided.

Overall, a useful overview guidebook for the region.

I am traveling to this area next month but have not explored this region in depth so wanted to find information about the area but this guide was a little to generic not really any more information that was available for free on the internet.

I love Fodor's guides and this one is so excellent, hits all the best places and good restaurant tips and hotels. We've been to this part of the world and going back in 2 weeks, so glad to review some of the information. Excellent for armchair travellers.
