A Warlord's Lady

Rate this book
Magic, murder and mayhem collide when an ordinary woman meets a powerful warlord — and writes a bestselling, tell-all book...

It's got to be Stockholm Syndrome...

Eighteen fateful months ago, Sabra was kidnapped by the infamous magician warlord Cain Dath, and her body just won't let her forget. Hidden in the humid depths of the Laos jungle, she shared everything with him, but he never shared his heart.

In his position of power, Cain cannot show weakness. He must lead his people to freedom and no one — not even the woman he's fast becoming obsessed with — can stand in his way.

Then Sabra sells her story of love slavery in a tell-all exposé and brings fame, fortune, and every one of his enemies down upon them both. Now, she is open to attack on all fronts, and he can no longer stay away. The man who enslaved her may well be the only man who can save her.

This was an awesome, unexpectedly, out of the normal story. I enjoyed almost every page.
I would have loved to give it 5 stars but the end was just a bit flat, I was expecting something more. But none the less a fantastic book.

Ever wonder why some authors are so good at telling a tale? How within each page you can get the feeling of actually being there, as though the words on the page and the world created within them are actually real? What if it was, what if the author really was speaking from experience? That ladies and gentleman is exactly the tale being spun in A Warlord's Lady, in a fun, exciting and brightly dark way.
.
Sabra Westwood, a very buxom beauty who is also a Chameleon, decides to write her own memoirs after escaping the infamous Warlord, Cain Dath. Afterall, he had the audacity to kidnap her, shag her senseless, lavish her like a queen for months, then allow her to believe she was no more than another concubine in his harem of women, what's a girl to do? What Sabra doesn't realize is that by writing her tell-all, she has unwittingly told all of her own secrets as well. Secrets she didn't even know about herself. Now, not only does she have to worry about being RE-kidnapped by Cain, she also has the government, the Magical Mafia and the Shadow Men after her as well.

Although there may be a few, though not many, dull moments, any book that has the ability to make the reader feel, smile, laugh, gasp and cringe, sometimes all in the same chapter, is a worthwhile read in my book.

Unfortunately I didn't like this book and was unable to finish it. Indeed I found it difficult to sympathise with the heroine as I consider many of her actions and thoughts stupid. I also didn't like the hero and I could not understand what they have between them other than lust.

Nevertheless, even if I didn't like this book, fans of paranormal romance may like it better than me and should consider giving it a try if they are interested.

First thoughts on this book were that the cover was beautiful and the book blurb was exciting. I couldn't wait to get started reading!

The action begins almost from the get go in this book and there is plenty of action. You empathise with Sabra in that she is nothing more than a -apparently - powerless pawn in a very dangerous game. So many factions are after her and she can't trust anybody. She's confused, tired, lonely and she yearns for the man who held her captive for 6 months. She is a likable character but she has massive body hang-ups and self-esteem issues and at times she is incredibly whiny and it's annoying.

Cain Dath is made out to be a magical terrorist. An evil Warlord. You know that there has to be more to his story than this, and of course you are right! Cain Dath he is a good guy, fighting for good reasons and he genuinely cares for Sabra, whereas everyone else is just interested in what she is and what it could mean for them.

What disappointed me with this book was that Cain and Sabra are supposed to have an intense connection from their very first meeting, but I didn't feel it. Plus, this book is more action than romance and Cain and Sabra spend as much time apart in this book as they do together.

Another thing that was frustrating was that there are several plot threads just left flapping in the wind at the end of the novel.

To top it off some of the language (and turn of phrase) used by the author was a bit off putting for me. The amount of references to farting and losing control of bowels just seemed out of place in a romance novel.

Other word choices like "twat" when in reference to female genitalia... Well. It was unexpected but, in the situation it cropped up in, it was kinda funny . Regardless of the humour, I thought it was a bit out of place.

Overall? I quite liked it. I was a bit disappointed by the weak romance and loose threads but it was still well worth a read on a rainy, boring Friday afternoon

3 out of 5 stars

A Warlord's Lady. Nicola E. Sheridan
Review from Jeannie Zelos Book Reviews
I wasn't sure about this novel before I requested it – for a while I mulled over whether it was one I'd like. I'm so glad I did take the plunge – its a wonderful book. Very different to what I expected. Sabra is free after having been captured by the warlord Cain Dath. Parts of the story are told in first person POV through her memoirs of the events, and part through a narrative description of events as they happen.
It's a fascinating read, very unusual and emotive. It involves conspraicies, plots by magical and non magial beings, and is set in a world where magic is known and regulated. As I suspect would happen if this were to transpire in our life, the world of magic is very tightly regulated and controlled by non magical beings. Sabra is a simple Chameleon, when naked she can change her slin to match her surroundings and hide, and she can't understand why she's under threat from multiple sources. It's not a skill sought out by anyone, its one many people share. Cain wants her back, the Gov wants her and other groups too....she doesn't know where to turn or who to trust.
I felt for her, she thought she was in love with Cain Dath then when she saw he didn't feel the same she escaped, (and that part was heartbreaking) but her notoriety meant a return to work wasn't possible, so faced with needing money she wrote her book. Then came even more danger as word about what she was got out – poor Sabra seems to be the only one in the dark, and along with that she doesn't know where to go. Or with whom. She gets placed in danger again and again, before learning so much about herself, others and her place in the world.
It's a wonderful book, full of sensual attraction between her and Cain Dath, love and heartbreak, danger and death, capture and escapes. It's a whirlwind of joy to read, written so that the events flow neatly and each plot ties up it was a book I loved and will happily re read. Priced at £3.11 for 232 pages its around average value.

Cain Dath is a warlord magician that battles the Laos government in defense of all magical creatures. He kidnaps Sabra and makes her fall for him during her eighteen months stay at his hidden compound as his sex slave. After Sabra manages to escape she goes into hiding but writes a best selling tell-all book that eventually exposes her to the public and leads to her being in mortal danger. Dath who has been searching for Sabra to bring her back, locates her after the book exposes her whereabouts to his and her enemies. He tries to kidnap her from the "protection" of a government who wants to use her for her special abilities. He tries to kidnap her even though he knows it is a trap, and he is putting himself at risk of capture.

I'm not a fan of extremely fantastic romance novels, but this futuristic story has just enough of everything; magic, mystery, intrigue, supernatural abilities, believable characters. great plot. and a love story that makes you go "Awww".

I have to admit that I fell in love with Dath's character, even though I am not the type to fall or the bad guys. While the media characterizes him as a evil dictator who lives in the Laos jungle, we learn from Sabras tell-all book that he was the tall dark, sexy and mysterious with a sensitive side. What's not to love about a guy like that!!

This book is one of those books no fantasy or romance reader wants to miss. Nicole Sheridan is a gifted writer with a real knack for making a believable plot with unbelievable twists. I can't say enough about Ms. Sheridan and this book. The writing was great with a smooth style and down to earth characters that are fun and believable. I didn't want to miss a page or even put the book down. I fully expect to see Sheridan on best seller lists in the future.

I am in love with Nicola's books. Every single one of her books has been utterly fascinating and enthralling to me. This one is the first that didn't involve a genie though, so there was concern if my love was for genies or her actual writing. I can confidently say that it is her writing that I love so much. This book was just as fantastic as all the others I have read. Her characters have real depth to them. I continue reading each story because I just have to know what will happen to each character and how they will change over the course of the story. The plot development is steady and won't leave you disappointed.

Now a little about the story. Sabra is a woman who blends in with the world. Looking at her, no one would suspect that there is much that is special about her. She's a chameleon; she's not magical and not really human. As a chameleon, she has the ability to change her appearance to look like someone else or, if she is nude, blend into her environment completely. In a world where people who have magical abilities or are magical creatures are forced to register with their government, Sabra is special simply because she does not have to register, but somehow she has attracted the interest of the notorious warlord Cain Dath. What could possibly have made him interested in this slightly overweight nobody of a chameleon? This is what the entire world is wondering after reading her book. She was kidnapped by Cain, where she spent six months as his love slave. Well that's what she calls herself in the book at least. In truth, she's not so sure that she was really a slave since she was a willing participant. Now, eighteen months later, she's under house arrest by the Australian government as they wait for Cain to reclaim her. If only she understood why everyone suddenly wanted her so badly.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This was a good read filled with magic, action, and romance. It's story-telling style was one of my favorites -- you jump right in and get hints and flashbacks to the prior events.

The story centers around Sabra, a suddenly famous and wanted woman who was "kidnapped" by a magical warlord (magic is out in the open in this world), then made to be his concubine. She escapes to write a memoir that earns her notoriety and oodles of money. Unfortunately, she is kept under house arrest "for her own good" by a controlling government in order to keep her safe from the Warlord's attentions. There are a lot of warring factions and hidden agendas, but in the end, the Warlord appears to have been the least of Sabra's worries.

The world that the story takes place in was a nice unique twist on your everyday paranormal romance read. There is race of magic users and groups of supernatural creatures of all shapes, sizes, and powers. After all of the bad press the Warlord got from Sabra's book, we eventually learn that there may be more to his agenda than kidnapping some unsuspecting tourist. It was fun to watch the romance play out and progress. There were surprises, misunderstandings, and even some darker events that lead our two main characters to an ultimately HEA (I hope).

This was my first time reading this author, and this book really made me want to check out her other work. The writing and story made for a good read.

Yet another amazing book by Nicola Sheridan. I felt sad when I finished reading her Magic series because I loved the world so much, and was delighted to discover that this book was the same world with some familiar creatures and organizations if not characters. Honestly I enjoyed the progression of this book and seeing Sabra actually learn more about Cain and why he wanted her, and trying to move past the trust issues. The excerpts from Sabra's book were interesting and gave us a nice glimpse into what things were like while she was in Cain's compound but it also could have been nice to get more from Cain's POV. By the end most issues seem to he resolved and things are seemingly happy. That being said, I think there is more story to tell here...and I certainly hope there will be another book.

A Warlord’s Lady has one of the best cases of identity confusion that I have ever read. Part paranormal, part urban fantasy, part sci-fi/romance with a dash of humor added in. It was surprisingly enjoyable, fun and slightly manic I knew I would like it from the first page.

Sabra is under house arrest, supposedly for her own protection. She is bait, the Australian government is committed to using her to capture the infamous Warlord Cain. However, there is more than the government wants from her, things that Sabra may not be willing to give. To read the complete review please see Penny Dreadful Books and Reviews.

It was unusual to have a story taking place partly in Asia, and the universe created here buy the author is original. I think I didn't grasp all the elements, and still have a lot of questions about it, but it was an interesting reading.
