As Lily and her family prepare for Christmas, the loving little girl continually tells her cherished toy, Blue Kangaroo, that this card, this present, and this carol is just for him. Blue Kangaroo longs to be able to give something to Lily in return - something that is just for her. But how? It is only with the help of Father Christmas, who arrives late Christmas Eve night, that Blue Kangaroo finds a way...

Originally published in the UK in 2004 as Just for You, Blue Kangaroo!, and in the USA as Merry Christmas to You, Blue Kangaroo!, this lovely holiday tale from author/illustrator Emma Chichester Clark was just reprinted this year (2017) as Merry Christmas, Blue Kangaroo!. I'm glad I stumbled across it on our Christmas table at work, as it is a sweet, heartwarming tale of the love between a little girl and her most cherished toy companion. The artwork is every bit as appealing as the story, with a subtle sense of humor - I liked Father Christmas's expressions! - that is well-matched to the text. I understand that Clark created many stories about Lily and Blue Kangaroo - hopefully this will be the first of many that I read and enjoy! Recommended to fans of the Blue Kangaroo books, and to anyone looking for gentle, heartwarming Christmas stories for the picture-book set.

I have a great affinity with Blue Kangaroo if only because my daughter cherished her Blue Rabbit, so I understand Lily's love for her lovable animal. [Blue Rabbit still exists, even though he has lost all his stuffing and only has one eye and he is still with my daughter who is aged ... well, over 21!]

It is Blue Kangaroo's first Christmas and Lily points out that it is snowing and she tells BK it is 'just for you, Blue Kangaroo'. And that is her theme throughout the run up to Christmas, everything she does she includes BK and she tells him so on each occasion.

She makes cards, one for BK, she helps her mother to decorate the home and she dedicates the Christmas tree brought by Uncle George to BK, who thinks, 'Just for me? What will I do with a tree?' At least he is able to admire it when it is lit up with a plethora of Christmas lights.

Presents are wrapped, one for BK, and they are put under the tree, and then Aunt Jemima and Aunt Florence bring mince pies and gingerbread men. In addition they bring a gingerbread kangaroo, just for Blue Kangaroo. Then Lily sings a Christmas carol especially for her pet, who in return wishes that he could sing for Lily.

When the household retires to bed, stockings are hung up for Father Christmas to fill and in the night, with everyone else asleep, Blue Kangaroo hears a noise. He goes to investigate and you can guess who it was. Needless to say the following morning there are three stockings hanging on the mantlepiece. And one of them states, 'Just for you, my good friend Blue Kangaroo, from Father Christmas.' Lily wonders how this could have happened and this delightful Christmas tale, as usual superbly illustrated, reveals all.

'Just For You, Blue Kangaroo!' is a welcome addition to the Christmas reading list.

Merry Christmas to You, Blue Kangaroo is a sweet holiday story written and illustrated by Emma Chichester Clark that makes for a great read aloud. As Lilly prepares for Christmas, taking part in many traditional activities, she includes her favorite toy kangaroo. The kangaroo magically wishes that he too can do something festive for Lilly - a visit from Father Christmas ties the story together. The artwork is detailed and colorful in the spirit of the season and the visit from Father Christmas (wearing a slightly different, but very merry robe) is an added treat as young audiences quickly realize that it is Santa Claus - and the story takes place in the United Kingdom!

Reading all of this author's children's books. I love the stories and I could look at the vibrant, gorgeous illustrations all day. Only returning them to the library because they insist I must.

Another cute christmas story for a little girl. Not sure about if you are reading it to a boy but they might like it as well. I love how the little girl goes around saying for you blue kangaroo. It is so cute as I could picture my daughter doing this with her American girl doll, Madison. A very cute book and highly recommend for a book to read on any young readers list for christmas or christmas in july type thing.

So darling! The illustrations glow and emanate the magic of Christmas at home, doing special things together as a family. I just decided I'm going to order this today for Micah's Christmas book.

All of Emma's books are worth checking out if you haven't already...
