The first book in an epic tale of affairs, alliances, and friendships in a quest for power and self-discovery~ Mimi enjoys a quiet, productive life in her tree house in the Flat Fields with her companion Bobo until a mysterious and disturbing recurring dream of violent demons and a long-haired deity becomes too impelling for her to ignore. In the Evergreen Woods live dangerous creatures who can help her, but will she leave the comfort of her home and secure life with Bobo to pursue answers?
Mimi and the Wolves is one of the best comics I've read in a long time.
Mimi the mouse lives in an idyllic, storybookish world with her partner, doing odd jobs for a nearby farmer to get by. Every night, though, her dreams are visited by a mysterious goddess and images filled with sensuality and sexuality that are missing from her regular life, leaving her conflicted on whether (and how) she should seek the goddess out and how to negotiate her needs from both worlds.
The artwork is absolutely gorgeous. It's very clearly influenced by a mix of Japanese superflat, Tove Jansson (Moomins), and American alt comix, but has a flavour all of its own; it doesn't feel at all derivative.
Alabaster's layout work and sense of pacing is impeccable. The storybookish regular world is depicted with regular layouts and rigidly square panels, which contrasts very well with the chaotic panel layouts and far more varied shapes that appear in the dream world.
It's going to be hard to wait for Act III to come out.
You aren't the first to wander these woods, you know. It's not a sacred journey. I don't think it's likely we'll ever meet. But who knows? Stranger things have happened.
This first installment starts quite slowly but builds a good basis for the story and finishes strong leaving the reader wanting to know more.
Mini has always had the same recurring dream and after a chance conversation with a shop-keeper she is given an elixir to encourage lucid dreaming in order to try and understand the meaning of her dreams. Soon she realises there is a lot more to the dreams than she ever knew. What does the symbol mean? Can the wolves be trusted? Will her relationship and friendships ever be the same again?

I was lucky enough to get Act I & II of Mimi and the Wolves for my last birthday and I love them. Charming characters, beautiful illustration, and a storyline that combines the homely with the magical - I would recommend these comics to everyone. Bound in a hand-printed silkscreen cover, the love Alabaster put into making these comics really shines through.
Was given this by a friend and loved it! A+ fantasy narrative with beautiful illustrations and a v nicely printed cover. Especially dug the dreamy wolf sequences. Looking forward to Act 2.
