Did not like the premise of this story. I couldn't believe that the mother would ever be so cruel to a child. Did not enjoy the story at all. I wouldn't call it a romance, either.
This was an enjoyable read but beware; there are many problems with the digital version of this book. Names are switched between characters and sometimes names of the characters are changed to names that are not in the story. I could easily follow the story through these problems and would read something else by this author.
Though an interesting premise, it was disjointed, changed POV from sentence to sentence and needs editing. All of these contributed to it’s lack of cohesion. A lot of what happened either did not make sense or was just too perfect. I do not think it is a good portrayal of an Amish community. Short – but not worth the read.
I really enjoyed reading this book I had tears in my eyes as to. How a mother could Great her child this way it was sad and then you were happy a great author I will be reading more books from this author what a fantastic read I loved reading this book..
This book teaches so much in an underlying way. I loved how Melanie shares about the emotional abuse and how the Amish deal with it. Isn't it amazing how we think our life is over, but God has something bigger and better for us?
Ruth was born with a bad hip, which her mother Mary believes that it is a curse from God. Mary believes this because she married a third cousin and was told that her kids would suffer the consequences. Ever since Mary found out that the hip problem is a congenital birth defect, she has been treating Ruth poorly. The verbal abuse is getting way out of hand, more and more people in their small Amish community are finding out. Ruth is feeling hopeless until Mark begins showing interest in her. When more people step forward to protect her, she begins to have hope in a future.
I really enjoyed this story. I found it hard to read the abuse this young girl experienced at the hands of the one person that was supposed to love her the most. I am not sure why it would surprise me, that something like this might happen in an Amish community. I think this type of story in this setting was well done.
A poor writing style and a lack of understanding of the Amish culture combine to make this the worst Amish romance I have ever read. It lacked much in the editing arena, but more, it portrayed errors in what is commonly accepted Amish culture. In this story, families sit together in church, rather than separated between men and women, and deacons and their families consistently gossip and spread concerns and fears about other church members. No one in this story keeps a single feeling to himself or herself. The dialogue is stilted. The prose could have been written by my third grader. I only regret that the rating system does not allow a "0" star rating.
I fully understand that the author was writing about mental illness and the repercussions that have been taking place when cousins marry one another in the Amish community. But, as a story, there are many repetitive portions and very little romance. When you have a title, A Perfect Love, the reader expects to see that as the focal point. Sadly it is an imperfect love with the focus on the terrible issues with the mother. I find it very hard to believe that the Amish community would allow over 18 years of abuse as had gone on in the story.
Ruth, a young woman with a hip defect is the main character of A Perfect Love. Mark is the young man the follows proper Amish courtship rituals to become her husband. The problem is her mother, who can't accept her physical defect and shows her only hatred and abuse. Parts of this are sad, parts are happy and up lifting, just as most of our lives are in the real world. I found it an interesting story about a faith far different than my own.
An interesting premise, but no depth to the story or characters. We are also meant to believe that for 18 years no one has seen how bad this is, and that the mother suddenly got worse with no reason. The father us supportive and willing to stand up for his daughter and yet this has continued all those years? Plot aside the book is also poorly written and slips between first and third person at random, sometimes in the middle of a sentence.
enjoyed the storyline, kept you interested and easy read gave you a glimpse of Ruth pain suffered from her sick mother showed the love of her father and how true love from Mark heals all , very thought provoking gives you an ideal of amish life
This story was one that kept me reading until the end. It was one filled with love, support loving the young Amish girl who had so many friends reaching out to her and her disability, while the mother of this girl was totally the opposite with doing hurtful things to her until this mother met her own demise.
This was one, very different amish novel. It was one that gave you tears, then relieved you by great joy. Ruth overcomes so many obstacles and with God's help and the communities help, she overcomes the most horrible obstacle obstacle, her own mother! The ending is wonderful, as I adopted too!
I wouldn't call this a romance. Most of the story focuses on the mother's (mostly verbal) abuse of her daughter. This is a short story that somehow manages to span several months. It is sorely lacking in both detail and emotion. The best thing I can say about it is that it was free!
A Perfect Love was a sweet story and one that can be read in a single afternoon. I was definitely pulled into the story and felt empathy for the heroine.
