Dwudziesty ósmy tom przygód Thorgala, którego fabuła bardzo ściśle wiąże się z dwoma poprzednimi. Wszyscy są przekonani, że Thorgal zginął i został pochowany na wyspie turniejowej. Jedynie Aaricia wierzy, że przeżył, i dlatego wciąż szuka sposobu, by uciec z Bizancjum, gdzie wraz z dziećmi przebywa jako zakładniczka na cesarskim dworze. Po kolejnej próbie ucieczki zostaje skazana na roboty w kamieniołomach. Spotyka w nich Kriss de Valnor! Kobiety będą musiały zapomnieć o wzajemnej nienawiści, jeśli myślą o skutecznej ucieczce. Przy okazji Aaricia pozna mało dla niej przyjemną tajemnicę ze wspólnego okresu życia Thorgala i Kriss, kiedy ci byli przywódcami piratów...

PT Todos os grandes heróis têm, pelo menos, um grande vilão.
É exatamente isso que Kriss de Valnor é para Thorgal — embora não seja inteiramente uma vilã. É mais 40% vilã, 30% anti-heroína e 30% ganância. Ainda assim, o seu papel no universo de Thorgal é inegavelmente importante.
Começou como uma simples ladra, mas com o tempo — de forma orgânica e convincente — tornou-se uma figura central em muitos dos momentos-chave da série. Não creio que exista outra personagem “maléfica” que iguale a sua presença e impacto.
Por tudo isto, este volume sente-se como uma homenagem fantástica à sua personagem.
Fico apenas a pensar… será que a voltaremos a ver?

She began as a simple thief, but over time—organically and compellingly—she became a central figure in many of Thorgal’s key moments. I don’t think there’s another “evil” character in the series who can match her presence and impact.
Because of all this, this volume feels like a fantastic tribute to her.

Thorgal's family escapes from slavery with the help of a former enemy. It is a bittersweet tale that serves to humanize a former villain.

Na hun vreselijke avontuur, waarbij Thorgal dood werd achtergelaten op een heuvel, worden Aaricia, Wolvin en Jolan naar de kroonprins gezonden. Zij ondergaan een ontsnappingspoging maar deze mislukt en zij komen terecht in een slavenmijn, waar een oude bekende de plak zwaait (letterlijk, met een pijnlijke zweep in de hand) en die nog een ei te pellen heeft met de vrouw van Aaricia en haar kinderen, na haar nederlaag bij de piraten nadat ze Shaïgan zonder genade (aka Thorgal) kwijtraakte.
Maar tegen alle verwachtingen in helpt Kriss van Valnor de drie leden van de familie Aeggirson te ontsnappen. Want wat blijkt, Kriss heeft een tweejarig zoontje bij en ze wil samen met hem eveneens ontsnappen uit de mijn. En dan wordt Aaricia iets duidelijk, de timing klopt, dat Aniël de zoon is van Kriss en van Thorgal, van hun jaren dat ze samen de zeeën teisterden.
Dan wordt duidelijk dat Thorgal op wonderlijke wijze aan de dood is kunnen ontsnappen en ze nemen hem mee onderweg naar Northland, terug naar hun dorp. Maar de Romeinse soldaten van de kroonprins zitten hen achterna. Kriss beslist zich op te offeren, voor haar zoon, nadat Aaricia de belofte maakte dat zij voor Aniël zal zorgen!
Een onverwachte wending in dit verhaal zorgt ervoor dat de toekomst van deze reeks gewaarborgd wordt, door Thorgal nog een zoon te schenken. De verhaallijn die hier later uit zal volgen zal echter niet onmiddellijk tot de fans hun favoriete albums horen, las ik. Ook is dit het voorlaatste album waar Jean van Hamme nog aan meewerkte. (Het Offer, het volgende album, wordt het laatste!)
Dit album is een van de laatste die Rosinski nog in deze stijl zal tekenen, vanaf het volgende album werkt hij met andere technieken en dat helpt zeker niet om zijn fanbase te behouden want de tekeningen in de volgende albums doen heel gek aan en passen niet geheel bij de reeks. Het zal dan ook niet héél lang meer duren dat Rosinski deze reeks zal verder blijven illustreren.
Kriss van Valnor krijgt ook binnenkort een aparte spinoff reeks, die parallel zal lopen met de hoofdreeks én met een andere spinoff reeks rond Wolvin.

It could be argued that things don’t get as grim as they were at the end of the previous Thorgal episode. And yet, with our curiosity piqued Van Hamme conjures up another script to drive the migrant family’s fortunes forward.
Aaricia, Wolfcub and Jolan are slaves, albeit well looked after ones, but for Aaricia it’s a situation she can’t tolerate. Her refusal to stop seeking a means of escape sees the three of them sentenced to work in the silver mines, an altogether harder way to live. As difficult as their lives have now become the last person they expect to find there, whip in hand, is Kriss of Valnor, someone they long thought dead.
Meanwhile a galley returns to the island where Thorgal’s body was left on a hilltop so two members of the Roman elite can get some satisfaction after Thorgal killed their sons. Except there’s no body, but equally there’s no clear means of escape from the island. The soldiers are challenged to find him and kill him once and for all, although it’s not too much of a surprise how that endeavour concludes.
So Thorgal needs to escape an island and his family from a silver mine, and while Thorgal just has himself to rely upon Aaricia, Jolan and Wolfcub find themselves allied with Kriss, and thay allegiance is about to be tested to its limit.
Kriss of Valnor’s return isn’t too much of a surprise as the books have been carrying the cover artwork for a few volumes now, but leave it to Van Hamme to offer a satisfying wrinkle as to the how and the why. Never a pleasant character, and always self-serving, this apparent change of heart is treated carefully to give her actions a rational logic throughout. Coupled with this is Rosinski’s fabulous artwork that looks better than ever on these pages - beautifully laid out with complex, detailed hatching and polished off by Graza’s considerate colours. The overall effect lifts the book no end.
I’d feared we were nearing the end of the Thorgal tales but very pleased to see there are several more to come. This remains one of my favourite ongoing series, largely down to the creative storytelling and myriad possibilities that presents. If you’ve not yet given the books a try then I hope this has twisted your arm.

Mlle Kriss débarque de nulle part comme toujours... Toujours égale à elle-même mais le tome réserve quelques surprises de taille vers la moitié et la fin du récit. Ce tome est un album clé de la série.

Na vier matige albums lijkt Van Hamme de draad weer op te pakken en terug te keren naar wezenlijker thema's in de cyclus. Niet alleen voert hij Thorgals antagonist Kriss van Valnor weer ten tonele, hij introduceert ook een nieuwe complicatie, die de komende albums zal beheersen. Rosiński's tekenwerk is hier en daar zo slordig dat het akelig wordt om naar te kijken - misschien was hij op de lijnvoering uitgekeken - in ieder geval is dit het laatste getekende album uit de reeks...

Croyant Thorgal mort (encore?), Aaricia tente de rejoindre son pays natal. Sur son chemin de retour, elle rencontre une ancienne rivale en possession qui lui fait une déclaration malencontreuse. Rien de passionnant dans cet album!

The first half seems a bit forced, purely for the continuation of the plot from the previous issue, but it was worth it cause it was really going somewhere and what a plot twist it was!!! Amazing character work for Kriss of Valnor and Aaricia and amazing ending.

In dit album komt Thorgal bijna niet voor, maar dat doet niets af aan de spanning. We volgen Aaricia, Kriss, en de kinderen hier ze proberen te ontsnappen aan de slavendriivers. Dit heeft een emotionele afloop...

Pomysł był znakomity. Pozwolić powrócić Kriss de Valnor ten jeden ostatni raz, aby być może najważniejsza femme fatale europejskiego komiksu miała godne pożegnanie. Niestety sporo rzeczy nie zagrało jak trzeba i pojawiły się fałszywe nuty. Znów odgrzewamy kotlety: Thorgal ciężko chory/umierający, a ciężar prowadzenia akcji spada na Aaricię i Kriss. Następnie dochodzimy do może najgorzej napisanej sceny w całej serii (przynajmniej przez van Hamme'a, bo jego następcy bardzo się starali): gdzie obie nasze główne bohaterki , nie jest dobrze gdy trzeba się uciekać do takich tanich chwytów by utrzymać uwagę czytelnika.
Szkoda też, że kolejni scenarzyści nie uszanowali odejścia Kriss i postanowili by jeszcze nie raz wróciła. O ile wprowadzenie na tym etapie serii miało sens i pozwalało w miarę sensownie zejść Kriss ze sceny, to niestety kolejni scenarzyści uczynili z niego centralną część najgorszych story arców w historii serii.
Jakże to jest graficznie wymęczone, nic dziwnego, ze po tym albumie Rosiński zrezygnował ze starego stylu.
