If everything you've known your entire life is a lie. Would you curl up in a ball and cry or would you be so pissed you run like hell? Well, the day I woke up in the woods naked as a jail bird craving blood it finally hit me I wasn't completely human. I say completely because I happen to also be some kind of were animal. So that was the day I decided to run like hell. Don't get me wrong I'm not weak or afraid. I'm an FBI agent for Christ's sake, and not just any FBI agent, I work in the SID's branch, Species Intelligence Department. We are the judge, jury, and executioners of all little bad supernaturals. A couple days ago me and a partner almost died from executing and execution warrant. After that is when I found out everyone has been lying to me since the day I was born. So, I didn't run because I'm scared, I ran because I'm pissed and if I see any of them again there's no telling what I'll do. I forgot to introduce myself, my names Jessica Barnes and I'm off to reinvent myself and forget this craziness ever happened."

I'm a loving dedicated wife and mother who was born and raised in South Florida. My husband was born in England and moved to the states as a young boy with his family.
When I am not chasing after a toddler I help run a family owned and operated construction company with my father.
I got into reading at a young age. The first book outside of school I ever read at the age of 7 was written by my Aunt.
Over the years I have read thousands of books of all different genres. I never thought about writing, but one day I sat my book down, picked up my laptop, started writing, and haven't stopped yet.
I really liked this novel but I think Melissa Jupp fucked up big time, it was way beyond too short. She should of wrote the full length novel and my rating would of been higher. I'd recommend not reading the series until ALL the novels are out because it sucks just reading a bit of it.
A poor approximation of the Anita Blake novels by Hamilton, there was barely enough here to constitute a legitimately original story and the characters had little basis for acting the way they did.
1.5 Stars. Free on amazon kindle. There are SO many similarities between this and any Anita Blake book. *Attractive woman with anger issues that works for the government killing paranormal creatures. *Has to have coffee to function. *Uses the same weapons/ammo (mini-uzi and glaser safety rounds). *Lived in an apartment, but moved to a house in the country. *Very tall, intimidating looking boss. *Underneath all that tough as nails exterior is actually a "softy" underneath. (Reminds me of the early Anita books, remember her penguin collection?) *"We are the judge, jury, and executioners of all little bad supernaturals." *Even uses the same names! Nikolaos. Though instead of being a scary very old master vampire that was turned as a young girl is a scary very old master vampire/were that was turned as a young man. -.- *Said scary master vampire speaks French and owns bars in "the district" *Supe bars/clubs are in "the district" *Nerdy and resourceful werewolf friend. *Go to Boulder/North Denver to track down a bad guy. (Affliction) *"screamed out my pleasure". *"To kill a vampire you have to take out the heart, cut off the head or both and depending on how old the vampire is. It's also safe to scatter the ashes over several different bodies of water" Same.Wording.
Also (of course), terrible punctuation, spelling, and formatting. Also, inconsistencies!
The only thing that made me keep reading was to see how much she ripped off LKH. However, when I was 75% of the way through, it got a bit different and slightly interesting. Not sure if I would actually read the next book, because this one made me so angry.
(Long groan) My god, the potential this had... and failed. Honestly, the biggest problem for me with this book was the horrible editing job. The author kept switching between first and third person... for MULTIPLE PEOPLE. If Ms. Jupp would just fix that my rating would be so much higher. The story itself had a lot of potential: a strong heroine who works with the government on investigating paranormal crimes and who might have stronger ties to the paranormals than she thinks. Unfortunately, she also happens to be unnecessarily, excessively bitchy. Certainly there was a better way for her to be portrayed as bad-ass than her constant swearing and constant temper. I think I'm going to read the next book just because, like I said, story-wise this was fantastic!
I have not read the Anita Blake book everyone is comparing this to so this hit me as fresh. I liked the fast talking FBI agent with an animalistic side. The story was not original enough in its entire premise to make me think it had been stolen from another because so much of this supernatural material is so much the same. Who is stealing what from whom? I don’t care. It was a light silly book to read that made me chuckle.
I give this book 3 stars. The reason being that I thought it jumped around a bit. I enjoyed the story as it played out. It was fast paced. I liked the characters. Jessi is a good lead. This looks like an interesting series to follow. I'd like to see how Jessi adapts to her 'new' life.
