I'm not really a fan of poetry as such—not that I HATE poetry, just that it's generally something that I glaze over when I see it, since almost none of it is narrative.
That said, this is a VERY cute book of poems for very young readers! I again sort of glaze over the actual poems, but the art is ADORABLE! That's enough of a draw to make even the dullest poem seem interesting!
The one major complaint I have is, as I've mentioned in past reviews, the poem about the mouse probably preferring a birthday CHEESEcake is based on a myth that is HARMFUL to mice (cheese is not a natural part of their diet and may poison them). It's pretty much impossible to completely stop the perpetuation of said myth, like rabbits eating carrots or cats drinking milk or dogs eat bones (though this one is fine with caveats as in the link).
This was one of my favorites when I was little. I remembered all of the illustrations 😍. It made me think of the quote Kathleen Kelly (Meg Ryan’s character) says in the movie “You’ve Got Mail,”
“When you read a book as a child, it becomes a part of your identity in a way that no other reading in your whole life does.”
If I could give this book more stars I would! My mother used to read it to me and I have such vivid memories of the images the poetry conjured in my mind. I never knew what the book was called and one day while visiting friends I spotted it on the bookshelf! I was so happy I'd found it and I can now recite this to my children. We have one copy, but I will probably buy a few more to pass on and to keep. :)
This was my favorite book when I was very little (so little I don't even remember!), so my Mom got it for me when I had my little guy. It's very sweet and each poem is about a page and perfect for little attention spans ;-).
