Acorns and Eat 'em: A How-To Vegetarian Acorn Cookbook

Ever wonder what acorns taste like? Confused because people have told you that acorns are poisonous? In this book, "Acorns and Eat'em," author Suellen Ocean will show you exactly how to collect, leach, store and cook with acorns. There are a wide variety of recipes, everything from breakfast, lunch and dinner to unusual deserts. For historians, there are many Native-American names for acorns and their parent oak tree and for those who truly love the out-of-doors, there is a field guide to oaks with descriptions and pictures showing what the acorns look like. If you think acorns are just for the squirrels and birds, you haven't read, "Acorns and Eat'em."

A guide on how to prepare acorns for use as food and a good number of recipes. It is a short treatise on the acorn and easy read. Who knows, I might even try it.

An interesting idea, and some of the recipes sounded pretty good. There was a greater focus on west coast oak species, leaving me at a bit of a disadvantage, though. The collection guide could also be improved by including actual photographs of the acorns and leaves for the different species rather than simply hand drawings.

I won a copy of this book from the Goodreads giveaway. Although I won't be able to test any of the recipes this year, I looked through it and it's very interesting. We may hold a workshop on this topic at the library next fall.

The book did disappoint me for focusing primarily on the American West Coast and American food.
I have experimented with acorn and acorn meals a little last year and I had hoped to get inspiration and a better understanding of how to use acorn in general - the nutritional benefits, taste, texture.

A quick read, not so great on how to recognize the trees, but hopefully good with the recipes. Can’t wait to try them !
