Will writing erotica save a grandmother from financial ruin? Where is Emma’s baby and why hasn’t he been returned to her? And will a boy be able to stop his little sister from being made into a gourmet girl burger?
Following Rosen’s acclaimed Seesaw collection, Volume II continues alternating between outrageous comedy and more sinister, psychological tales. At the core are two very different novellas – My Granny Writes Erotica and The Ice Marathon – alongside brand new short stories.
The preface will continue Rosen’s own story, inviting you to share in her rocky but exciting journey from long-term incapacity to professional author.
Rosen is a British bestselling author, who writes fiction for children and adults.
She was born in Cornwall and grew up on Restronguet Creek. She studied Experimental Psychology at St Catherine's College, Oxford, before moving back to the West Country. She now lives on the south coast of Devon with two imaginary cats, fantasising about getting a real one.
In 2011 Rosen was an aspiring author. Writing was a hobby. The following January sales of her books on Kindle took off, and by October she has sold 27,000 copies and her total download count exceeds 220,000. She now has three books in print: Pompomberry House, Seesaw and The Troll Trap, as well as many digital titles.
Rosen writes in a variety of genres with a strong leaning towards comedy. She has also dabbled with psychological fiction and mystery writing.
She loves wild swimming, mountain biking, interesting boots, quiffs, 'sampling' chocolate and cooking tasty treats. She dislikes house spiders, doing laundry and people putting costumes on their cats.
I recently read the first volume of Rosen Trevithick's collection of short stories and immediately started reading the latest collection. I wasn't dissapointed that I did, I enjoyed the first collection and while the format is very much the same the quality is higher than the previous book (which was a damn fine read in its own right).
The format follows a similar pattern to the first collection, there is a vareity of stories that predominantly feature relationships and mental health issues. On the face of it that might sound mundane, but the author's talent is to bring clarity and even some humour to these situations. They also do a great job of providing understanding of some of the mindset that people suffer, a good example of this was the text message story from a woman with OCD.
Two stories in particular stood out for me. The first was 'My Granny Writes Erotica', I'd read this as a standalone previously and it was just as funny reading through it again. This was comedy gold. The other was the opening story 'A Stormy Afternoon in Falmouth Harbour' which is a short drame that had my heart in my mouth for the duration.
The author's writing has developed since the first collection and this is readily apparent when reading, there is a greater level of polish here, but not so much that it loses the immediacy of the story. Overall this is an excellent collection of stories, well worth reading.
Like Rosen Trevithick's first anthology, Seesaw, this is a collection of novellas, short stories and flash fiction. I read some of the stories elsewhere as they are available as standalone books and in the KUForum anthology Off the Kuf volume 1, however this set of stories goes well with the author's ups and downs of her writing and her life.
The stand out piece for me is 'My Granny Writes Erotica'. This is a wonderfully funny story of a granny needing to raise money and deciding her book can be published on kindle.
The first story 'A Stormy Afternoon in Falmouth Harbour' is edge of your seat stuff and makes you not want to put the book down.
The flash fiction pieces work well as they kind of follow on from each other and when you get to the next one you have to read it.
I'm not really a fan of Trolls, but this was readable in that you get the human version of the story in 'The Other Father' which is quite a powerful piece, then the Troll version which was interesting in a writing way to me rather than a troll story way.
Even if you've read one or two of the pieces of this anthology elsewhere, you get a lot of story for your money in this anthology.
