3 Taking a Chance Again Stars
* * * Special Holiday Sale-99 Cents!!!
This is a holiday story which spans Thanksgiving and Christmas. We have a Mother of 3 who experienced the horror of a home fire. They were rescued but her husband did not make it. After going through all the treatments, surgeries and therapy, our gal has come back home to her family to start over.

It has been two years and Jane has learned all the tricks to cover the skin grafts on her face... she has come to terms with the scarring left from the fire. She is determined to make this upcoming Christmas a special one for the children. She has the support of her extended family... brothers and sisters... and her parents... all wanting her to be finished healing and now to live fully.

Jane's brother has arranged for the kids to get a personal tour of the Fire Station. They both think if the kids can see the trucks and men in a friendly environment, it will help them get over their fears. The brother pulled some strings with his friend, Christian, who is the Fire Chief. He will personally see to their tour.

Christian has been a loner for a while. He doesn't come from a big family... only him. He isn't close with his mom and never has been a relationship guy. He is a looker, so getting affection has never been a worry...He has been this way for awhile now and never thought to change.

This family unit takes him by surprise...he doesn't understand why he is drawn to Jane... She has 3 kids... that is so not his thing....But somehow during the Fire Station tour... Christian has fun taking Jane's small son onto the truck...He likes explaining how all the dials and levers work with the oldest daughter... and Jane... she causes him to want more time with her...

This is very confusing...
Jane is confused, too... because she is attracted to this Fire Chief... and he is supposed to be a player...and his job is dangerous...So why is she interested... and is it too soon...

This is the set up... we have these two people who are drawn together... and they have to figure out the whys... and whether it can even work. There are some serious hiccups along the way...Both are afraid of the feelings they are having...but by the time Christmas comes...all should be settled.

This is a series with Book #2 - Tempting Cameron and Book #3 - Loving Mindy coming. There are some sweet moments and lots of Holiday cheer.

A refreshing story about how a family pulls together and moves forward after a devastating life altering fire.

Christian Nelson is the single fireman who has the label 'player' tattooed on his chest. Jane Clark is the mother of three who has been left a widow and a recovering burns victim after a house fire.

I am a sucker for a HEA plot and this is a feel good book. I will be looking for other books by this author as I liked her style of writing.

***Original review posted at Romancing Rakes For The Love of Romance***

First thought I had when I read the blurb of Jane's Gift? Heck yes! If there's a fireman, fire chief or any man that wears turnouts, I'm totally in. I'm easy like that.

I'm going to preface this review with: have Kleenex on hand because you'll tear up a few times. The prologue will make you cry. Thanks Karen Erickson!

Jane Clark lost her husband and home in a fire and is left to raise her three children by herself. She's not really alone since her loving family has been helping out and she's living at her brother's house until she figures out what comes next. She's self conscious of her burns and covers herself up so no one will stare.

Hellooo Christian Nelson, local fire captain! He's a transplant who saw his parents marriage fall apart and he's not the commitment type. Rumor has it, he's a player.

Not the commitment type eh? Well Chris, get ready to have your world turn upside down by Jane and three little hellions. The moment Chris greets Jane at the firehouse door, he's intrigued. He shouldn't be since she's a widow with three kids but there's something there. He invites her to a town charity event, a movie, dinner. Anything to spend time with her. Jane starts to warm up to the idea of spending time with Chris but holds back. Whether it's the memory of her husband or one of her kids not liking the whole Chris situation, she starts to feel guilty. Her family should come first.

Chris is determined to show Jane and she can move on. With him. He even warms up to her kids and they to him. A ready made family. The perfect Christmas gift. At least until a jealous woman who Chris turned down plants a little seed of doubt in Jane's mind.

How far will Chris go to show Jane and her kids that they're The One? Will Jane get over her fear of losing those she loves to fire? Is Christmas really a time for miracles?

Favorite Quote:
"Sorry. I guess I'm too eager to watch big macho firemen work those long hoses in their sexy yellow coats." Mindy laughed and Jane rolled her eyes. "Come on, not much excitement happens for me anymore. I have to get my thrills where I can."

Overall: There's so much I want to say about this book yet I can't seem to find the words. This is a new side of Karen Erickson and I await what she has next in store for readers. It's a sweet story that still makes me believe in the magic of the holidays. I loved every word of it. Every touch, every glance, every whispered word, every heartwarming moment, every blush inducing smexiness. It has the makings of a Hallmark Movie with a dash of sexiness. You'll smile at the children's antics especially Logan. You'll sigh when Chris touches Jane. You'll laugh along with Jane's siblings. And you'll fall in love with the little town of Lone Pine Lake.

I'm a sucker for secondary characters so I can't wait for Jane's brother, Cam's book. Step on it Karen!

This review was originally posted on my blog.

This touching story about grief, hope, renewal and finding love (again) was my first read by author Karen Erickson, and it won’t be my last. I liked Jane’s strong resolve to rebuild her life post tragedy that took her home, her husband and left her badly scarred. I also liked her over protective brothers and their families who rallied around her and took her in. Jane’s recovery was painful, but she’s determined to get better for herself and her children. If only she could get over her fear of fire.

Captain Christian Nelson is made out to be a womanizer, a playboy. I didn’t get that feeling about him. He’s single, he works long hours, has a dangerous job no woman really wants to deal with, he doesn’t want commitment, he’s dated quite a few women and has a type, but it wasn’t like he was sleeping around like a cad. Obviously there’s more to him than just his hero status and crazy good looks. I loved that he was multi-faceted and had more to offer if people only gave him a chance. His parent’s miserable and failed marriage has left a bitter taste for relationships. Against his better judgement to get involved with a woman with “baggage”, he can’t help but be drawn to Jane. Despite her scarring, she’s still beautiful to him. She’s courageous, a great mother, and has a huge family that sticks together and has fun. All things he misses in his own life. hen there’s Jane’s tumultuous family, and intimidating brothers. I love that they were very protective of her, but didn’t interfere.

Their chemistry was great. In the beginning, the shyness on both their parts was really cute. As it eventually morphed into a little more, their trepidations reared their heads which threw them a few curve balls. Jane’s marriage was solid, but not without it’s problems. I didn’t doubt her devotion to her deceased husband, but even she admitted it wasn’t always sunshine and roses. Stephan seemed to care a lot about outward appearances to colleagues and friends, and he was a workaholic which often left her lonely and feeling like he wasn’t spending enough time with the family. When she feels a stirring of attraction for Christian, her survivor’s guilt sets in. On the flip side, Christian can’t imagine wanting to be a part of a ready made family, but he soon finds comfort in being around them. It doesn’t help that more than one person keeps hinting at Christian’s playboy status. She’s scared, but wants to give him a chance.

The love scenes were sweet, mostly because they fade to black. That didn’t bother me at all. The implications alone hinted at very good times. The ending was a little predictable in that Jane would have to face her worst fear if she wanted to be happy. I understood why she did it, but I was hoping the courage to “live” again would have helped her overcome the dramatic road bump. But I guess even the best sprinters knock down a hurdle. To Christian’s credit, he doesn’t back down. She’s worth it, and he knows it.

I both sobbed a little and cheered for them all the way through. This was just one of those feel good romances that I would want to read again and again. The writing was smooth, the characters were real and relatable, and overall I’d definitely recommend this book to fans of hot firefighters and great heroines.

Two years after almost losing her life in a fire, widower Jane Clark has moved back home to Lone Pine Lake to start over with her three children in tow. Wanting to ease the fear of fire for her children, and well herself, her brother arranges for them to meet Captain Christian Nelson at the firehouse to learn about fire safety. She had not expected to find herself attracted to the town playboy, nor that his feelings maybe returned.

Christian usually avoids women with children, but everything about Jane puts him at ease and he can’t get her out of his mind. Knowing she is reluctant to venture into a new relationship, and he certainly is hesitant about commitment Christian sets out to take it slow with Jane, but life has a way of throwing curve balls and they will need to trust in each other if they are going to make it.

Slick's review posted on Guilty Pleasures Book Reviews

It’s really tough for me to read Christmas stories this early in the season, I’m a firm believer in the Christmas season doesn’t begin until after Thanksgiving (well except for Christmas shopping that is all done before, but that’s self preservation). However, this is my first holiday season with Guilty Pleasures and I’m reading Christmas themed stories way earlier than I normally would. I just hit the jackpot with Karen Erickson’s latest story, Jane’s Gift. This is a remarkable and uplifting book that will get anyone in the Christmas spirit whether they want it or not.

Jane Clark is a widow whose husband died in a house fire that left her in a medically induced coma for months and scarred for life. Her three children were thankfully spared but are scared of fire and her oldest especially is missing her dad. Even though it’s been two years, Jane struggles trying to cope with it all day in and day out. She’s moved back to the town she grew up with to be closer to her family and is living in a house her brother owns and uses for vacations. She’s maintaining, going through life the best way she knows how. Her brother Mac feels they all need to move on, so he arranges a tour of the local fire station with his friend the fire chief. Jane never imagines how this tour will change her life.

Christian (Chris) Nelson is “new” in town, even though he’s been around about 5 years. He’s got a reputation as a player, though he feels the title is somewhat unwarranted. He dates but he doesn’t do commitment. When his one good friend asks him to give a station tour to his sister and her kids, he can’t refuse. He knows they survived a house fire and he hopes he can give them all some piece of mind. He never expects to feel the sudden urge to protect and care for Jane and her three kids.

I’m not going to lie; this story is an emotional rollercoaster from beginning to end. These two both have a lot of baggage in their past. Jane has not only had to deal with the death of her husband, being a single parent, months in a hospital, multiple surgeries, scars, she’s come to realize that while she loved her husband her marriage was far from perfect. So on top of everything else she’s feeling guilty for what she considers dishonoring her dead husband. Her children are actually faring pretty well, her oldest Lexie seems to have the most lingering problems but even she is pretty stable. Chris grew up in a volatile household and has a pretty dim view on love and marriage. To top it off he’s an only child with no real family. He decided a long time ago that commitment and marriage wasn’t for him so he’s enjoyed his single life and everyone in town has no problem talking about it.

It’s so hard not to love these two characters from the start. Jane despite all she’s been through is immediately attracted to Chris who throws her off balance. She feels guilty but happy that she’s having those types of feelings again. I admire her for speaking her mind to Chris and letting him know exactly how she’s feeling even when she’s angry. She doesn’t mince words and she while she takes her kids (mostly Lexie) into consideration when moving forward, she doesn’t give them the final say in her happiness. Chris is an absolutely great guy. He knows that Jane is struggling with her feelings for him and he gives her space when she needs it. He doesn’t rush her and he’s so patient with her and the kids even when they give him a hard time. For someone who never wanted a permanent relationship, I find it fascinating how easily he accepts Jane and her entire family (and they are a big bunch). When he screws up, he isn’t afraid to own up to it and apologize. For that he’s gets two big thumbs up from me! When Jane screws up, he backs off but then he confronts her and doesn’t let her get away. Again proving he’s a pretty remarkable guy.

Jane’s Gift is an inspiring book and will automatically put you in a holiday mood. Karen has written a truly heart-warming story filled with fantastic characters you will instantly fall in love with. I can’t wait to see what she has in store for us next in this series!

For Read Your Writes Book Reviews

Have you ever picked up a book and immediately KNEW you were going to like it ? That was my experience with Jane's Gift. I was hooked with the second sentence. Jane's Gift is a wonderful book that will have you rooting for Jane and Chris as they deal with the obstacles they face on their journey to a truly happy and fulfilling life.

How soon is too soon to move on with your life after you lose your spouse? Should you feel guilty because you survived and they didn't? Are you entitled to live a happy life and not worry about how other people think you should act? These questions and more are posed by Jane, two years after a house fire killed her husband, Stephen, and changed her life forever. Jane thought she had the perfect life, until one day it was gone. Now she's struggling to fit into her new life as a burn-victim and single mother of three kids all under the age of eight. Jane isn't sure if she has grieved enough for Stephen and if she should even feel attraction to anyone else. In addition, her children don't want her to move on with her life.

Christian Nelson is known as a playboy for a reason. He prefers to keep things with women simple. He's afraid of rejection and doesn't want to get hurt so he tends to leave women before they start to want more than he's willing to give and decide to leave him. He's an only child from a divorced family and doesn't believe in love and marriage.

From the moment Jane and Chris met, they were attracted to each other. I love the fact that Chris realized his attraction to Jane and tried to be cautious and not freak her out. I thought Chris was a total complete DREAM. I mean you have this guy who has absolutely NO experience with kids, but he wants to be around Jane and her kids all the time. When he doesn’t see them, he misses them all. He even makes himself sick, just so he can spend time with them and not let them all down. I love Jane because she’s a survivor. She’s doing the best she can with her situation and she’s doing an amazing job.

When tragedy strikes, Jane and Christian’s love is put to the test. All of Jane’s fears come rushing toward her like a slap in the face. This is one of the moments where you realize what Chris is really all about if you haven’t figured him out beforehand. Jane wants this Christmas to be great for her and her kids. Unbeknownst to her, Christian makes that and more possible.

I love ALL the characters in this book. Jane is from a large family. She’s the fourth of five kids and only one of two girls. You can only imagine how Jane’s brothers react to Chris, the family scenes are great. You know how before I said I knew I was going to love the book immediately? I could not wait to look up information about the author and her other books, while in the middle of reading this book. Jane’s Gift is the first book in a series of books!!!! (Happy dance going on for me!) I can’t wait to read the other books in this series.

If you are looking for a heartwarming, sweet read to help put you in the Christmas spirit Jane's Gift may be just the book for you.

Jane Clark woke up from a 2 month long medical induced coma to discover her life has turned into the worst possible nightmare. Her home was destroyed in a fire, a fire she barely made it out of alive thanks to her husband. Running back in to save the children Jane was burnt severely and her husband was killed. Now, 2 years later she has moved back to her hometown to be closer to family. Her body has healed as much as it's going to, but her heart still suffers the guilt of being the only parent that made it out alive. She wants to make this Christmas everything that the kids haven't had in far too long, starting first with the kids fear of fire. In an attempt to help the kids overcome this fear she plans a trip to the local fire department. She was praying this trip will help the kids begin the healing process. She was not expecting to be drawn in by the sexy fire captain and how that visit would forever change her life. Can she find a way to have the confidence to believe that she is worthy despite her scars?

He told himself they didn't bother him, the scars. But they did affect him. Not because they made Jane Unappealing or ugly or whatever her fears were. They affected him because they showed the extensive damage this woman had gone through. Everything she'd suffered in the past, and from what he could tell, she'd suffered a lot.

Christian Nelson readily agreed when his friend asked him to give his sister and her kids a tour of the fire station. Even though Christian isn't a hometown native he knew her story and was happy to help. He, however, didn't know that with one look at her his life would forever be changed. All of a sudden his beliefs that love 'em and leave 'em is the only way to go may not be the great idea he thought it was.

This book brought tears to my eyes more than once. I absolutely loved Christian and how he stepped right up and included the kids in his courting of Jane. I loved how Jane was a good mom and continued to be the best mom she could be even when she was dealing with a bratty pre-teen, energetic toddlers and her own personal demons. Kudos to Ms. Erickson for making the reading audience feel like they shared this journey with the Clark family.

A special thanks to NetGalley.com for the loan of this book in exchange for my honest review.

The above blurb is a perfect hook for this heartwarming and very touching story of one woman’s acceptance of the tragedy that befell her family and hope for their future.

Jane Clark is surrounded by her children, her siblings and her parents, yet deep down she feels that the hole in her heart where her husband used to dwell, is empty. And when she decides to face her fears of fires and meets a man who just might help her do that and possibly offer her a second chance in love, she isn’t sure of herself, nor of the man himself.

Christian Nelson was surprised how quickly he became attracted to the young widow and how much he started to care for her children. As a new friend to her brother Mac, he knows that his reputation of ‘player’ might hurt his chances with Jane, but what worries him even more is his fear of commitment.

MY GOD! The chemistry between these two was AWESOME! Every scene between the two was electric. The author blew me away with the tension build up! As I was reading the story, through Chris’ eyes, I just went through everything he felt. My heart beat faster and the tension had me shaking at some moments. The sexual chemistry was jumping off the page, that’s how good this story is!

Yes, there’s a lot of pull and push, second guessing, family drama and cute kids to boot, but make no mistake, this is romance at its best. I am so glad I read it! Another must for your Christmas List!

I am new to Karen Erickson’s work, but I mean to correct that very soon!

Jane’s Gift is a very enjoyable holiday story that tugs at your heart and has you believe in the miracle of love.

Jane Clark moved back home to the safety of her family after a devastating fire two years ago that killed her husband and left her with scars on both her body and mind. She is trying to get back to a normal life with her three kids however she has been unable to move on and even though her kids were not hurt in the fire, the two older ones seem to still be frightened.

With the help of her brother, Jane and the kids visit the fire station to take a tour. She wants to help her kids and maybe herself to get over being anxious of fire. She feels she is cheating her kids when she does not even want to have a fire in the fireplace during the winter. At the station they meet Christian Nelson who is the fire chief and the only full time employee during the winter. He is happy to help his friend’s sister and her kids feel save around a fire station and fire truck. However Chris is unprepared for what he feels for Jane when they first meet. He has always held himself back from any commitment with women and for years has let the community believe the stories that surround him as a player, however he seems to want to take care of Jane and bring her back to the living.

You can find this review and more at Forever Book Lover.

I am a fan of Karen Erickson, she is known for her sexually charged erotic books. This my friends is quite different from her normal writings, this story is sensual but not overly heated. It is a true holiday romance book, it warms your heart, brings a tear to your eye and after reading it you know that love can overcome fear, loss and brings two seemly opposite people together. I think one of the things I liked about this story is the characters own up to their screw ups, they know what they may have done was hurtful and they immediately right a wrong. When reading other books, it is not uncommon that you need to read through several chapters before they admit to their mistakes, this was quite refreshing.

I fell in love with Christian and Jane, both wary of commitment but being patient with each other as they learn and begin to open their hearts to the possibility of a future together.

Karen introduces you to a wonderful mix of characters, you immediately take an interest to, within a few pages you feel like you are part of the story. I can not wait for more to come in this series, could Cam be next or maybe Max.. Hurry Karen, I hope that you write one for Valentine's Day...

Homigosh, you've GOT to be kidding me.

Our heroine has burns over 30% of her body. In the first three pages, she's cowered away, hid behind her hair, and cringed. One week later? She's tucking her hair behind her ear, openly flirting, and being Ms. Shwang. W.T.Heck?!?!?

And the cheesy writing. "We can see a comedy. I saw the preview. It looked like it was funny." <<< ?!?!?! Really. A comedy that looks like it might be funny. Who knew?

I'd really like a book that was what it was supposed to be. If your scarred-up heroine is shy? Be consistent in it. If your hero is a player? Let's have him not do an immediate 180 and be a one-woman only guy, immediately. Because it's just NOT believable. Well... by airheads, yes, but that's why they're stunned when Mr. Studly steps out on 'em. Whatevs.

Probably should add that I'm a mom of five kids, and breastfed every one of them. So your funny jokes about how people like THAT are unattractive, while (not) writing about the disfigured heroine? Ouch, honey. Nice character you've written up, there. She even bad-mouths her dead 'workaholic' husband (but sighed over her old, 'successful' life. How'd that happen, without him putting in the time?).

DNF @36%. Because it wasn't worth it.

Jane and her three young children survive a fire that takes the life of her husband. Jane is burnt badly and it takes time for her to recover. Two years later Jane and her children have returned to the small town she grew up in. With her family close she is starting over.
Christian Nelson is the new fire captain and local playboy in town. He meets Jane and her children when she brings them to the station in hopes that it will help them get over their fear of fire. He is instantly taken with the young widow but he doesn't believe in love and happily ever-afters.
Jane and Christian start dating and the chemistry grows. Can she get over her fear of losing him to his job and can Christian get over his fear of love and commitment? Maybe Santa can bring a Christmas miracle.

This was a sweet, sentimental, wonderful holiday story about two scarred people who need to give up fear in order to love. I truly liked these characters and kept hoping for their HEA.

I would like to thank Karen Erickson and Entangled Publishing for allowing me the opportunity to read this for an honest review. The pleasure was all mine.

Ms Erickson's writing is still fairly new to me but I wanted a Christmas story and I'm glad I read it for this holiday season. Jane lost so much in that fire but she has come far in two years and takes the next step to moving on with Christian. What a good match for them. Glad to see the interaction with her children too because it is a ready made family. Looking forward to the other sibling stories especially for Mac and Mindy.

a friend was doing a re-read of Christmas stories and it prompted me to also read Jane's Gift. I remember it well and it was nice to return to Lone Pine Lake. Jane's story of a second chance at love with a firefighter after the fire is truly amazing. She knows the difference now and what she had and what is good for her. What she develops with Christian is something special. Christian also wants more than being the player he has the reputation for. Jane does something for him. A wonderful story for the holidays.

Jane is a widow. She lost her husband in a house fire when he saved her and their childrens lives. But she didn't escape without permanent burn scars.

Two years later she and the children have moved back to her hometown to start over. Here she meets the handsome fire chief, Christian. Christian is equally smitten despite Jane's scars.

Some minor drama with Jane's resistance, Christian's occupation, the gossiping townsfolk, and the children's acceptance but all's well that ends well.

This book was a little too sweet for me. It was also incredibly unoriginal. The best thing I can say is it was perfectly fine. I liked it okay.

REVIEW: 3.5 stars-- JANE’S GIFT is the first installment in Karen Erickson’s contemporary, adult LONE PINE LAKE romance series focusing on the McKenzie family of Lone Pine Lake. This is fire captain Christian (Chris) Nelson, and single mother Jane (McKenzie) Clark’s story line.

Told from dual third person points of view (Chris and Jane) JANE’S GIFT focuses on recovery, acceptance and the building relationship between fire captain Chris Nelson, and single mother Jane Clark. Two years earlier, our heroine was injured in a house fire that took the life of her husband Stephen, and in the ensuing time Jane’s recovery includes moving her family back to Lone Pine Lake. To help her children overcome their fear of fire, Jane’s brother arranges a tour of the local firehouse wherein she will meet fire captain Christian Nelson- a man with a reputation as a player-afraid to commit to a long term relationship. What ensues is the building relationship between Jane and Chris, and Jane’s attempt to let go of the past.

JANE’S GIFT is a sweet, clean, romantic story line with very little angst or story line conflict except that which is brought about by Jane’s insecurity and guilt about moving forward without her last husband Stephen. The premise is lighthearted, simple and pure-the $ex scenes are mostly implied or fade to black. The characters are real and inspiring; the romance is passionate without the use of over the top graphic language or text.

A devastating house fire cost Jane Clark nearly everything: her husband, her confidence, and her looks, with the physical scars marbling her body. Now, two years later, she’s living and healing back in her childhood hometown of Lone Pine Lake. The upcoming holidays are the perfect opportunity to bring some Christmas cheer into her young children’s lives, starting with a visit to the firehouse, where her brother’s best friend has offered to help quell their residual fears.

Lone Pine’s resident playboy, fire captain Christian Nelson is happy with his single-guy lifestyle. He’s an everyday local hero, so he’s never wanting for attention around the holidays. But when Jane Clark shows up, Chris is immediately drawn to the beautiful widow—even though kids and commitment have never been his style.

Despite her brother’s warnings about his friend’s playboy status and dangerous occupation, Jane can’t help but fall for the gorgeous fire captain. The holidays are a time of new beginnings, but can two scarred people find the strength to let go of their pasts to live in the present, when a lifetime together might be the sweetest gift of all?

I was unsure if I would like reading a holiday book so early in the year. Boy I am glad I did. Ms. Erickson has done it again. This book is about a family trying to recover after a devastating fire. Their emotional journey had me glued to the book from the moment I picked it up. The wonderful characters and family interactions are realistic. I really fell in love with the whole family and the back and forth with her brothers and sister made it feel like I was part of them.

I was rooting for Jane and Chris from the moment I met them. Each had a past that made them try to avoid a relationship but they worked it out and I just knew there was going to be a HEA. The fact that it was set in a small town was perfect as far as I am concerned. You really got a feel for the atmosphere and the way they celebrated the holiday festivities made me want to move there. The secondary characters really kept me interested had the plot moving along. I can’t wait to see where the next book in the series goes from here.

If you want to get in the holiday mood, or just read a feel good romance, then this is definitely the book for you.

Short, Sweet & Filled With Holiday Spirit

Two years ago, Jane Clark lost her husband and her home in a tragic house fire. Left with burn scars that remind her of how she almost lost her life too, she's still struggling to rebuild the life she lost. Returning to her hometown of Lone Pine Lake, Jane's focus is on making her three children feel safe and happy after so much trauma. There's nothing like the Christmas season to bring joy and smiles. But on a trip to the local firehouse where the idea is to strip away some of the lingering fear from the accident that took their father and scarred their mother, it's the handsome fire captain who charms the kids.

Christian Nelson has a reputation for serial dating that suits his lifestyle just fine. Lone Pine Lake has plenty of female attention for a sexy local hero but from that first encounter he's drawn to Jane. Everything about her goes against what usually interests him but maybe she's just what an emotionally scarred commitment-phobe needs. And maybe Christian is just what Jane and her kids need at the holidays... and beyond.

I'll admit that JANE'S GIFT is not something I would usually pick up. If it were set during some other time of the year it probably wouldn't have caught my attention. But as Christmas approaches I always find myself eager to dive into holiday themed romances. They just have a way of helping me get into the mood for celebrating in a way nothing else does. If you experience the same thing it's definitely one to pick up!

While it's about the equivalent of a made-for-TV movie by literary standards it's by no means bad. Christian is a little cookie-cutter and Jane is a little flat but their struggles are relatable and the fluffy storyline a sweet, quick read. The secondary characters help the story along and could easily get your wondering if Erickson might not write about them in future Bliss titles (hint, hint).

If you're looking for a light romantic read for a boost of holiday spirit I definitely recommend giving JANE'S GIFT a go.

4 out of 5 Licks

Let me start this review by saying who doesn't love a sexy firefighter? I mean seriously if you don't then you might as well leave now. lol Yeah I had a feeling none of you would be leaving. *insert smug smile* Now Jane's had a rough few years. She was in a house fire that killed her husband and left her scarred physically and emotionally. Her children are scared of fire and a trip to the local firehouse helps ease their worries. Jane meets sexy fire captain Christian (Chris) and boy do the sparks fly (forgive the pun I couldn't help myself). Jane and Chris both take turns fighting the attraction between them. There is some lovemaking in this book but we don't get a lot of details (this is from the Blush line). Don't worry though what we get is nice and steamy and leaves you with no doubt of what happened. After Chris is injured in a fire Jane doesn't think she can handle losing someone else to fire again. Does she let her past go so she can share her future with the sexy fire captain or does she walk away knowing neither she or her kids will ever have to face a loss like that again? Read the book and find out. Hehe you didn't think I was going to give away the ending did you?

Jane is a likeable character. She did start to annoy me at times with her constant push and pull routine with Chris. Chris does his own fair share of pushing away too though. Jane's family is sprinkled throughout the book and that makes it a fun read as well. I always love reading about crazy families-we all know we belong to one. You really route for things to work out with Jane and Chris the entire book. Sometimes I find myself not caring as much about characters but that wasn't a problem here. As a side note this is also the start of a series! I am a series whore and I can't wait to see what Karen has in store for us next time. I know the story I want but I don't know if I'm going to get it.

Continuing on with my Christmas reads, I just finished a heartwarming Christmas story about overcoming tragedy in life. Nothing like sharing a heartwarming Christmas story during this time of year, so I bring you Jane's Gift by Karen Erickson.

Poor Jane, who lost almost everything in a house fire. Unfortunately, her husband was unable to survive the fire. At the same time she was able to survive and so were her kids.

Two years later, Jane and her children move back to her hometown in Lone Pine Lake to start anew. With the help of family, she slowly pieces her life back together. When her brother Mac suggested they take a tour of the fire station to help them to overcome their fear of fires.

Once they arrive, Jane and her family meet Captain Christian Nelson. (Oh my, oh my). Anyways. Chris kind of feels an attraction to Jane. Which is unusually, since he tends to steer clear from woman with baggage. Yet, there's something special about Jane. Can this work out or will it be put out before something starts?

So many words that could describe this read: inspiring, stirring, encouraging, gladdening and of course heartwarming. I loved this story. Not because there was a sappy ending, but all those words I listed. Jane's Gift gave a story of hope and new beginnings, especially when overcoming a terrible tragedy. Jane is a wonderful character. I love how she tries to fit the pieces of her life back together. I'm not sure how many women would ever really survive from something like that. Then you have Chris who tends to be commit phobic, because of his childhood. Yet he's willing to take a chance on Jane.

So, if you are looking for a heartwarming, stirring, and encouraging love story for Christmas, you may want to checkout Jane's Gift. I absolutely loved the story of new hope. I strongly encourage you check this story out, plus the hero is drool-worthy.

I hope y'all have a wonderful holiday season and enjoy those holiday reads.

Jane's Gift by Karen Erickson
4 STARS

Jane's Gift is a tender story that takes place mostly in her small hometown over the holidays.
Jane wakes up in the hospital to find she has been in a coma for 3 months. Her children are okay but her husband died.
Two years later Jane has brought her 3 children home to live in her brothers second home. Jane has a big family and support system thier. Jane and her 3 children are a afraid of fire, with a good cause for it. Her younger brother Max arranged for them to have a tour of the firestation from his friend Christian Nelson.
Chris is a fire captain. He does not plan to ever marry and have kids. He comes from a broken home and a only child.
Chris is very understanding of why Jane's children are scared. He is really good showing the two oldest the fire engine. He is attracted to Jane even with her burn scars on part of her face. The second time he runs into Jane's family he asked her out.
Chris is afraid of relationships while Jane is afraid of fires but they can not stay from each other. Chris finds himself trying to get all 3 of Jane's children to smile at him.
I have a feeling that we will see more stories about Jane's family in the future.
This is a nice story but feel the characters got over thier fears pretty fast, but it is fiction anyway.
A lot of different people warn her that Chris is a player and not to get hurt from him.
Jane keeps telling him that she is not ready for a relationship then her actions show she is.
This is a quick read. Thier are love scenes in the book I did skip over. I will read more from Karen Erickson in the future.
I was given this ebook to read in exchange of honest review from Netgalley.

This was a very sweet story and a great start to a series. There is a lot of family, taking chances, second chances, coming into your own after something horrible happened and more family. This was endearingly delightful.

We meet Jane after she’s had a terrible accident and lost her husband. She’s trying to pick up the pieces of her life both for herself and her kids with the help of her family by moving back closer to them. She tries to be invisible but she’s caught the attention of the fire captain and he can’t seem to get her out of his mind. He’s a natural playboy who never had intentions of settling down, let alone with someone who already had kids.

It’s interesting to see these two together. It’s sad when Jane tries to fight their attraction but she finally gives in. There is not too much intimate details about the two so this is more of a wholesome book again with the sweetness of the characters. The kids are always a dilemma, but it’s tough on them trying to get used to someone new in their lives after missing their father so much. It’s about growth and expansion, about letting go and moving on.

Overall this was a quick and easy read, very nice and I loved the characters. I think I felt more for the sister though and I’m dying to find out her story which I know is in an upcoming book in the series. There’s a lot going on here, so many different characters in Jane’s family that you just know they will each in their own right have a great story.

The cover was very catchy, I will say that for some reason it isn’t how I pictured them but still a really cute cover that caught my attention. Great writing and an overall good book. Reminded me of my love of Hallmark movies.

The book grabbed me from the prologue with Jane's tragedy and had me going until the end with anticipation of a HEA.

Jane has tons of battle scars physically and mentally. She is widowed and now a single mother.

Christian (Chris) is the fire captain and Jane's brother 's best friend. He also happens to be the town player who is not looking for commitment.

Because of Jane's past she is shy and timid and love is not on her radar. Well...until she meets the heartthrob fire captain who is the person that is supposed to help Jane and her kid's fear of fire. But with this meeting new fires get a blazing. (wink wink if you know what I mean).

For some reason Chris is drawn to Jane and her family and can't pull away from the flames.

With their own personal demons they eventually hurt one another and run for cover.

Love can be overwhelming especially when it comes with a built in family plus a big extended family like Jane has.

But sometimes love and family are enough to settle the flames of the past and the uncertanity of the future and just keep the embers burning for the present which is love, passion and commitment.

I loved this sweet story about hope, love and second chances.

This is a wonderful story about a mom who survives a house fire, but loses her husband. Her three children made out of the house and she finds out about her children surviving, and losing her husband before they have to put her into a coma because of her burns and the treatment for them. You pick up the story two years later and she is working on putting her life back together slowly. She moves back to her home town surrounded by family, and friends. Her brother has told her about an offer from the fire captain about a tour. She reluctantly takes him up on it and though she is attracted to him she is scared to even think about starting to date. Christian Nichols the fire captain thinks Jane is beautiful, but is scared of her children and of her. He knows she heard he dates a lot and he has his own fears to overcome, but he still wants to give it a try with her. When she finally does agree to go on a date with him it turns out very nice and for a time everything is going good. That is until the night he stays over and then leaves without saying anything. There is more to this part. This pisses her off not just as a women, but also because her children were finally accepting him. This is really where the story takes off because it goes into more of their fears, for the both of them and the writer does not make it an easy fix. A very good story. I got this book from netgalley. I gave it 5 stars. Follow us at www.1rad-readerreviews.com

This is simply a lovely read. It has endearing characters, a good storyline and touching heartwarming moments combined with those that tug on the heartstrings a little.

Jane has returned to her family following a tragic fire 2 years previously which resulted in the death of her husband and her being left with terrible injuries. Her scars aren't only on the surface; left with three small children she is still grieving and understandably self-conscious. Christian is her younger brother's best friend, the local fire captain and has a reputation as a bit of a playboy. He is kind, caring, witty and a little relentless when he knows what he want. There was nothing not to love about him and when Jane arrives at the station with her kids so he can help them get over their fear of fire, it results in a little bit more than either of them bargained on...

Their romance was a heartwarming realistic journey of self-acceptance and trust, love and hope and I was willing them to find their HEA as they both truly deserved it. Combine this with Jane's rather large and ever present family bringing wit and humour exactly when it is needed and Karen Erickson has given us a wonderful start to what I hope will result in many more visits to Lone Pine Lake. Definately a book I can recommend.

Three and a half stars.

This was a super sweet, behind closed doors, holiday romance.

Jane and her children survived a horrible house fire in which her husband died and she received terrible burns. Two years later, she has moved back to Lone Pines to be with her family but she and the children are still traumatised. After they react badly to lighting the living room fire, Jane's brother Mac suggests she take the children to the fire station for a private open day to get them less scared of fire. When Jane meets the super sexy fire captain Christian she is immediately attracted but combine her scars with his reputation as a player and she thinks nothing can come of it.

I enjoyed this book, definitely one for the cold nights when we all start dreaming of a Hallmark Christmas and cosy small towns with local fairs and church fund-raisers (well this city girl does).

Warmed the cockles of my cold dead heart.
