Kinshield's Redemption

Rate this book
Dozens have been corrupted by tainted water from the Well of the Damned, including King Gavin Kinshield's beloved wife. He's desperate to reverse the water's effects and restore Feanna to the kind and compassionate woman he married.

And what of his helpless heir growing in her toxic womb? To save his unborn son, Gavin must find a solution before the darkness that’s overtaken Feanna also stamps out the tiny spark within her.

Help seems to appear in the unlikely form of the Guardians, two ghostly figures tethered to the crystal that lies deep within the wellspring. Can Gavin trust them... or will their own agenda take the lives of his wife and son—and bring on the utter destruction of the seven realms?

What an awesome series, one I found very hard to stop reading. I was swept up with the characters as they went from good people to bad people. I crossed my fingers and toes hoping that King Gavin would eventually figure out how to turn everybody back. Now I have the decision to make, do I start another series by this author or do I go for something different?

So many new elements that made this novel amazing. All the Wayfarer stuff was cool. Love the realm jumping and the zhi and Kho bent stuff. And grumpy Feanna. Love this story!

Yea…I teared up a little

I started reading this collection, when I was much younger. Very good book and fantasy novel through and through. Don’t skip these! I am saddened that it's over but I am sure Gavin's son will be an even better king.

The Good:

A beautiful end to a beautiful series. K.C. May does it again. After being less than impressed with the conclusion of Well of the Damned, it was great to see that this book tied the series off with a nice little red bow at Christmas time. It struck me while reading this book that K.C. May does not have a lot of the things in her writing style that usually make me fall in love with a book. I am enraptured by beautiful prose that paint the scene with words as easily as a painter's brush. I like to feel my mouth water with the roasted chicken on the spit, or feel the goosebumps as snow whips through tired boughs of trees. Beautiful feeling can be experienced through well crafted prose that does not bog the story down, but adds to the flavour of everything being experiences.

Don't get me wrong. K.C. May does not write bad prose, but this is never what drew me into her writing. Half way through this book, while I was enjoying it so much, I stopped and scratched my head, "What is it about May's writing that makes me not want to put the book down?" I'm sure it is a lot of things combined... the short chapters that keep things going. The jumping POVs between prominent characters that gives me a fully formed idea of what is going on in everyone's head(s), but most importantly it is story and characters that sell this book (and the the Saga as a whole). When Gavin was telling stupid jokes about making his own bubbles in the bath I had to sigh and say, "Oh, Gavin" with the rest of the characters in the scene. Why? Because after reading four books with the man, I feel like I know him. Every character has their own mannerisms that make them distinct from each other to the point that even simple scenes with Gavin entertaining his family can be the most memorable of moments.

The plot comes together well, and even the small holes I found in it had nothing to do with the plot at all, but the character flaws of those engaged. I found myself talking to the character, saying things like, "Why are you doing that! I know a better way!" or "No, stop being a moron." Sadly though, my words did not reach their ears, and poor choices were made, the consequences being discovered too late.

The Bad:

...

Conclusion:

This is not just a book, it is an adventure with well rounded characters and a plot that will enrapture you from beginning to end. Similarly (though not really at all) this is not a review, but a praise fest of Kinshield's Redemption, the Kinshield Saga as a whole and K.C. May for capturing my imagination for more hours in a row than is healthy or sane.

The Kinshield Legacy is one of those series that I seriously could not put down! It tells the story of a crass, common man, Gavin Kinshield and his journey to find the truth about his ancestor, Ronan Kinshield, Champion to a great mage-king Arek centuries before. The circumstances surrounding the death of Arek are mysterious and resulted in leaving the people leaderless until someone claims the crown by solving the riddle of the five rune stones. Gavin's story, as told through this series, is one adventure after another and culminates in him becoming king but not before experiencing one harrowing adventure after another. These books are a constant thrill ride, the story is original and creative and if you're a fan of fantasy adventure, you will certainly not be disappointed. K.C. May is a brilliant writer, has crafted a fantastic series, and is now right up there with my favorite fantasy authors.

A slightly downbeat ending which fits the storyline well. Perseverance pays off and Gavin manages to sort out the domestic problems from the previous volume as well as laying the foundations for a peace with the enemies from a centuries-old dispute - as well as correcting the royal bloodline. As a bonus most of the main characters make it out alive. (And Sithral Tyr manages to see his wife and surviving child on last time. Sort of.)

The world and the underpinnings seem logical and well-thought through - magic use has its costs. The only dangling thread is just why the yellow-realm sorcerers were siphoning off the essence from their captives but that's a minor cavill!

I love Gavin Kinshield, he's not the typical hero, full of noble thoughts, always sure of himself and completely correct whenever he makes a decision. Rather, he's crude, and sometimes really screws things up. He is partially to blame for the corruption of so many of his people by the water from the Well of the Damned. He spends most of this book trying and failing to make things right, but luckily comes through in the end. It brings Cirang and Tyr's stories to a close, and I was actually sad to see them go (well the new kinder versions).

This final book in the saga had lots of twists and intrigue. I was on the verge of giving it five stars but I was disappointed in the ending. As much as I should have pitied the queen, I grew to the point where I would not mourn her departure from the story. I also felt like Gavin had his lesson thrust upon him rather than choosing the right outcome for himself.
I'm not sad to have read the series. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys fantasy with a Medieval feeling to the setting.

Saddened because this is the last of the series.

Truly a book for relaxing. If you enjoy reading this series is fun, exciting and adventures abound. In this last book on Gavin is great, I don't won't to give the ending away...but the readers will love it.

It was a good final edition and I liked how it all came together and wrapped up. I would certainly recommend this series to anyone. I'm actually curious for more.
