I liked the first book in the series better than this one.
SOME MILD SPOILERS AHEAD...
I found that the main characters, Barrett and Nick, rather bland. Their connection didn't seem real to me. I couldn't understand why they've been feeling such guilt: Nick for killing his brother when said brother was begging him to doit since he was dying and being in great pains; and Barrett because her brother died of heart attack during a shooting occuring near them but where they were not involved. They both denied themselves a life after that. I just couldn't understand it.
Maybe it's just me but this type of emotional angst is becoming overused and starts irritating me.
Also Barrett's obsession for finding the abducted girl was almost morbid. She's wants to save her so much that she's doing things no secret agent would do! As I understood it it was her way for atoning her guilt, but it was not well done. I didn't agree with her actions even if her reason was good and just.
Nick too is much too ready to help her without thinking about consequences. They both were like eager youths - much too naive.
Also the "intrusions" of their lustful encounters were ill timed. If I were a super-secret agent I wouldn't think about making a jealous scene while underdover, or having sex in a cover-ip appartment, or having sex instead of discussing and reviewing evidence....
The even vampire was dispatched too easily and too quickly. Nick was beaten so badly that he's unconscious, but as soon as he wakes he dispatches a crazed made vampire, then ripps of the hear of a born and very powerful one... mmmm... very unbelievable!
3 stars are due because I'm interested to know who's the FBI mole and what will happen next with the turing programme and all the other things that here are left in the shade...
Barrett is a member of a special agency that investigates vampires. It had only been a few months ago that she like other humans believed that vampires were just made up bogey men and not real. Now Barrett knew that not only were they real but that our government was turning humans into vampires and using them to counteract what they perceived as a national threat. Barrett was presently involved in tracking down a rogue group of vampires that were operating a sex-ring and slave auction that specialized in blood slaves. The investigation was now very personal because someone that Barrett had promised to protect had been kidnapped by this group. Barrett had given her childhood friend Sarah a deathbed promise to take care of her daughter so nothing would stop her until she had Jane home safe.
Nick was not only a highly trained soldier but he was also a tech whiz that could do about anything with a computer. He was also a skilled sniper and still used by the government as a contractor. Nick had been given a kill order from the government to take out vampires as needed and that left him time to work on and develop new equipment. He had been recruited by the FBI when his enlistment was up and told the truth about born and created vampires. Nick had found out the FBI was using vets like his brother in their experiments and he had been forced to kill his own brother because of the rage caused by his change. The FBI had given him a list of those that needed to be exterminated due to their violent behavior and danger to innocent citizens.
Barrett had decided that it would best to seek Nick out on his mountain. She found herself being stalked by a turned vampire that was in the advanced stages of mental and physical deterioration. Nick arrives in time to save her from the deranged vampire and both remember their time together and how they had parted. Barrett has intense feelings for Nick and fears that she will not be able to stop herself from loving him and that would be disaster for both of them, some things can never be. The protective instinct was in full force as soon as Nick laid eyes on Barrett again, they were both in denial if they thought that there wasn’t something between them. Nick agrees to help Barrett find Jane and rescue her but it will have to be unofficial.
Nick’s top priority is to take out as many turned vampires as possible on his list and to help Barrett find her dead friends missing daughter. Will they find each other as they search? Who is in charge of the blood/sex-ring? Can Nick and Barrett keep each other alive? Will they open up and tell each other about their feelings?
Would I recommend this book: Yes! This is an amazing author that really uses a unique perspective to present a vampire mystery that has it all. This includes: intrigue, passion, love lost and then found, honor and loyalty. The book also includes some really ‘HAWT’ sex!
Would I read other books by this author: Yes! I’ve read everything by this author that I can get my (Kindle) hands on.
Barrett Miles is a new member of the Belladonna Agency, a secret group run by the FBI to track rogue vampires. She is working on sex trafficking, particularly of young girls, prized for their innocence especially by high ranking, wealthy vampires. Barrett is former military and learning the ins and outs of the Agency. Ty and Ana whom we met in Turned ( Book #1) are hiding out for their own safety. She is recovering from her forcible turning, and they fear they are still being hunted. The rest of the team is getting to know each other. Barrett has been given an assignment that is very dangerous and has suddenly become very personal. She learns that her former lover, Nick Maltese, now a techno wizard working for the FBI has skills that could be very helpful with her assignment. Not to mention his skills when they were in each other's arms. He lives on the top of a mountain surrounded by the highest security possible. She is going to find him.
Nick Maltese has never forgotten Barrett Miles. Her intelligence, her bravery and her body. After a harrowing trip up his mountain which includes being rescued by him, she explains what she needs. They don't know who to trust, so they have to trust each other. They soon realize they can't fight their feelings and in the chaos of danger and vampires they give into their passion.
This exciting novel is action packed and not for the faint of heart. Ms. DePaul creates fascinating characters ; Vlad the evil vampire club owner, Justine, former exotic dancer and Barrett's partner at Belladonna and Carly the mysterious CEO of the agency who only communicates by phone. This novel can be read as a stand alone but Turned explains the agency and it's operatives and makes this novel and the Belladonna Agency easier to understand. If you enjoy lots of action, vampires good and bad and a love story, I highly recommend Awakened.
I received this eBook from the publisher and NetGalley for an honest review. Pat Fordyce
Former lovers Nick Maltese and Barrett Miles are reunited in search of a missing teen. Barrett Miles works for the FBI’s Belladonna Agency, whose purpose is to catch vampire criminals, Nick works freelance for the FBI: he’s a vampire killer. Ms. DePaul has found yet new things to add to vampire mythology. Vampires, sex trafficking, and a whole lot of secrets are the basis for this fine suspense. Well done, Ms. DePaul and I’m looking forward to Kevin and Justine, and the dogs, in upcoming books of the Belladonna Agency series, this being book 2.
This copy has been given free to me by First Reads. Thank you so much for the giveaway!
Nick Maltese and Barrett Miles rekindle their relationship while searching for a missing teen. This book had great action, hot sex, and vampires! Such an amazing book!
My Rating: B- Liked It, but I had a few small issues Review originally posted at That's What I'm Talking About Review copy provided by Edelweiss
Barrett Miles is a human working for the Belladonna Agency, a secret section of the FBI that knows about vampires, which exist among the humans. Barrett is desperate to locate Jane Small, a missing teen who is the daughter of Barrett's deceased childhood friend. Jane was taken by sex traffickers that cater to vampires.
Nick Maltese is a gun-for-hire, contracted by the FBI; his job is to eliminate dangerous, rogue vampires. Believing that the FBI’s Turning Program is over and it is his job to clean up the failed mess, Nick is surprised when his former comrade and lover, Barrett, shows up telling him about Jane and her captors. Now the pair must work together to bring down the dangerous vampires holding Jane captive while coming to terms with their unfinished relationship.
Awakened, the second story in the Belladonna Agency series, is much tighter and more focused than its predecessor, Turned. I appreciate that there was far less world-building and background about vampires, the FBI’s involvement in turning agents into vampires, and the dozen or so characters who play background rolls. Instead, the story opens right in the thick of Barrett trying to locate Jane and stays the course throughout the entire novel. And although human trafficking is a horrendous topic which should never be trivialized or taken lightly, Ms. DePaul is able to effectively use it as the backdrop for her story without bringing readers into a graphic or gruesome set of circumstances.
The primary storyline of finding Jane and bringing down the sex-ring and sale of underaged girls is intriguing. I enjoyed watching Barrett put each puzzle piece into place and figure out not only where Jane is, but who did this to her. I like how it intersects with Nick's job of hunting down turned vamps. I also like that the idea of an FBI mole has taken more prominence in the story.
However, the romance of Barrett and Nick didn’t send any sparks my way. I did like that they had a history and were already "in love" until they split a year before the start of Awakened. I can't point out anything bad or negative about their relationship, but I didn’t feel emotionally connected to them at all. And after a while, Barrett grated on me. Not only did she become a wishy-washy heroine because of continual asinine presumptions about Nick's feelings, but she also withheld important information about the case from Nick, and she was willing to put herself in danger without telling him. I probably didn’t feel connected because the couple didn’t trust one another to open up and allow for a solid relationship for much of the book.
And I just have to put this out there because it bothers me. The FBI is killing vamps with knifes dipped in liquid nitrogen. How does that work? The liquid nitrogen would evaporate within moments of exposure to normal atmosphere, leaving a normal blade. And even if the FBI did find a way to tote around a blade with liquid nitrogen on it, the nitrogen would burn the skin of the user. I understand that this is a fictional book, but the reasons behind why a “nitrogen dipped knife” will kill a vamp never have been explained, and it seems like it's bad science.
In the end, Awakened was better than its predecessor, with a tighter storyline and less confusion. The plot was interesting, but the execution was not fabulous. I was disappointed at the immense build up only to have a climatic scene that lasted a few paragraphs.
I did like that there were more than a few hints about a mole/s in the FBI. The book ended with several questions from the first book still left unanswered, like who is really behind the inner workings at the FBI and the Turning Program? I like this over-arching storyline, and I appreciate with the way it is being presented in small bits. I gleaned a little more this time and hopefully it will be a continuing theme that will become a stronger piece of the puzzle as the series moves forward.
My Review: A- rating... This is the second book in the series and although the series has an over-arcing story, you absolutely can read these books as stand-alones. Belladonna is an agency made up of two former FBI agents who are now vampires, four women from very different backgrounds but who all have an unusual link, and the mysterious unseen Carly who's in charge of them all. Think a paranormal Charlie's Angels and you have this series...and I love that about it.
This book took the reader away from the agency and focused more on one of the agents, Barrett. Barrett is former Army, although she grew up in a fairly affluent family. While in the Army, she dated Nick. They broke up and she got out of the Army, but she doesn't realize that there was much more to her story than that.
One of the things that Belladonna does is track vampires and their illegal activities in the US. Barrett doesn't realize it, but her personal life and professional life are about to collide when a teenage girl, Jane, disappears. Jane is 17 and was dating a vampire-devoted guy. Her aunt and uncle just think that she ran off with him, but as Barrett begins to investigate, it quickly becomes obvious that something much more sinister is at work here...vampires trafficking young girls. Barrett gets a glimpse of Jane in a conference call...and trying to track that call leads her to Nick.
Nick has his own special skills. He's a killer for the FBI. His targets are a list of turned vampires that were once soldiers that the FBI has deemed as dangerous. His history in this job is more than a bit heartbreaking and there are signs throughout the book about how hard it is for him to do...even when the killings are not personal like one was. He's also a bit of a computer geek so he's an obvious person to help Barrett. This leads both him and Barrett into the world of a new vampire nightclub...which is where the real story begins.
I enjoyed the story of Nick and Barrett. They have a history and although Barrett doesn't know everything about that, they still have that connection. Neither one of them really wanted the break-up, but they didn't communicate when it was all happening. But because they have that connection, they work really well together and Nick is determined to not let the same mistakes separate them again. He realizes now what a mistake he made then and his commitment to them made this book work for me.
What also really worked for me was the entire club set-up. I enjoyed all the scenes within the club and the way that it was all organized. This is a nightclub just opening so there was lots of behind the scenes details. Virna DePaul did an amazing job with everything about the club...the organization, the visuals, the really complex levels of what all is planned for the club...from Sam to Vladimir to the creepy white wall art to Murphy...every little detail was spot-on and I could see it all in my minds eye. I enjoyed reading this one.
I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.
Awakened, the second book in the Belladonna Agency series, knocked it out of the park for me! What did I love about this book? Oh, just about everything! First off I am a HUGE PNR fan. And just because I am does not mean I will read any old PNR that falls in my lap. It’s got to be good, REAL GOOD. It’s got to have the whole package for me. Characters, action, and a plot with enough mystery to keep me from guessing what comes next too easily. This book has it all. Here’s what it takes to get a 5-star review out of me.
Characters – well developed and interesting are a must. No problem here. Barrett and Nick are awesome. She’s no wimp and he isn’t all-grunt-grunt macho. They are perfectly matched. Slightly flawed, strong and smart. Let’s not forget there is heat between them. THANKFULLY, their story is not all sex. There’s emotion and character. Even the antagonists are well done. Vladimir is one bad dude yet he is still interesting. He’s just a guy running a business (admittedly a bad one) but it’s his sinister side that caught my attention. While I don’t think he would scare me in a dark alley, please do not not let him and me get near a white room. Got to touch on one more character who sparked my interest – Sam. OMG!!! Sam! I can’t go into details but Sam was easily one of my favorite secondary characters in the book. PLEASE, make another appearance in the series.
Plot – it’s got to keep me riveted. BIG CHECK! A thriller, mystery and romance all in one. So many twists and heart-pounding moments, it was like riding a roller coaster. The story is well developed and even if you didn’t read the previous book in the series (which I highly suggest you do) it’s easy to keep up with what is going on. I pretty much figured that the ‘latest victim’ was going to get rescued but the journey to get there kept me from putting down my book. There was plenty of action and adventure to hook me in. As much as I wanted to sit down and devour this book in one sitting, I was good and paced myself. I didn't want to rush too fast and miss a thing. There are definitely some story-lines be built up that will be revealed in future installments of this series. Seriously, I may have a problem when this series ends.
As for what I didn’t like about this book….Crickets.
So this series is the one I am popping my Virna DePaul cherry on. So far, I am more than satisfied. Between the great character and good plot a PNR fan couldn’t do any better. While each book can be read as a stand-alone, I do suggest reading them in order. I get the feeling all this is building toward something pretty epic. If you are looking to tryout Ms. DePaul’s writing, then look no further than her Belladonna Agency series. You won’t be disappointed. Now to wait for the next book…
I received this book from JeepDiva for the express purposes of an honest review. The opinions and rating of this review are solely mine and in no way was I compensated.
Awakened, The Belladonna Agency Series, Virna DePaul. Review from jeannie zelos book reviews I really enjoyed the first book in this series, Turned, and was looking forward to reading more so when I saw this on the review list – well- had to request it :-) So, it's focussed around Agency member Barrett this time. She's having to work with her ex, a man she's really still in love with, though she won't admit it even to herself. She kind of emotionally stunted as far as love goes, she's scared to admit it, she has a kind of brittle in your face appearance, posh girl who’s never upset or has problems, and yet she's far more than the face she shows people. I feel she broke things off with Nick as a self protection method. He's fighting his own guilt – he betrayed her on their last mission to keep her safe, but hasn't told her. It led to her leaving the Service and him, and he's still feeling the guilt. They're hot together though, scorching, sizzling, and it doesn't take long before the old attraction between them has them heating the sheets once again. The search for Jane, her dead friend’s daughter, ties in with the Agency's mission and with Nicks FBI work. They have to be careful though – it's suspected there's a mole in the Agency ( and my schoolgirl humour keeps conjuring up visions of were-moles, as we're talking about paranormal...can you imagine how scary those front paws would be???) but no-one has any clues who it is. I can't help feeling that's going to play a large part in a later book...There's lots of planning, clues to work out, people to trust or distrust, action and danger. Barrett and Nick both learn things from each other their respective agencies either didn't know or weren't telling, and some of it is essential vampire info, where lack of knowledge could lead to death. While working together they also learn things about themselves and each other, that shed light on the past and helps cement their future. Its another cracking adventure, with just enough drama to keep me on the edge without overdoing it, so that the whole thing becomes unreal. Its a fine line in fantasy – even though we're talking about (hopefully!) unreal creatures there still need to be lines of reality in the actions and Virna does that really well. I commented last time on a couple of things I found a little unreal – this time nothing stands out. I hope we see more of the dogs too – they sound like a real help to save lives. It's a great read, not quite five star but close. Stars: four and a half, one for re reading and keeper files. ARC supplied via Netgalley
Barrett Miles is an ex-soldier who now works for the Belladonna Agency, a super-secret agency who is dealing with both rogue vampires and other vampires who believe that humans are just for food and profit. Barrett started out on a mission to break down a ring of human kidnappers and stumbled across the worst type of human trafficking and to make it worse, this was very, very personal. Barrett will do anything to save the young girl she just saw online on a vampire blood website.
Nick Maltese is also an ex-soldier who working as an undercover sniper and a former lover of Barrett’s. When she shows up out of the blue and requests Nick’s help, he has a ton of questions and a ton of guilt concerning what happened at the end of their time together. But he wasn’t about to tell Barrett no, after all he still loved her.
Barrett and Nick begin working as a team, even though Nick also had his own mission concerning rogue vampires. When the various threads began to show that maybe, just maybe their missions might merge together in certain aspects, the danger becomes worse than it was to begin with. Nick and Barrett have pinpointed a new blood club that is about to open as being a heck of a lot more than that and its owner has a lot to answer for. The grand opening of the club is about to happen and Nick and Barrett plan on making it an opening no one will ever forget in the vampire world. Help comes from very unexpected corners as does the danger – when the final battle is over just who is going to come away with a future and who is going down in flames?
Two stubborn ex-soldiers and lovers come back together to defeat a vampire threat to humanity in Awakened. Nick and Barrett have a lot to get past before they will have a chance to see if this time their love will have a chance at a future. There were several times I wondered if Barrett and Nick would come out together as the danger came closer and the pressure to succeed more intense. I could feel the desperation that Barrett felt at not fulfilling a promise she made and I could also feel Nick’s determination to keep Barrett safe – even if the payment for that was to lose her. However, both of these lovers had a bedrock of strength and trust that overcame even the truth on Nick’s actions to keep Barrett safe while they were both still in the service. The suspense had me page flipping while I was cheering on Nick and Barrett as their passion surged forward. Awakened is full of suspense, passion and enough danger to keep you glued to the pages until you learn just who comes out okay and who is behind the various threads and are paying for it.
I did read the first book, but since each book features a couple, it can be read as a standalone. While I did get introduced to Barrett in the first book, it was only a slight introduction so the information I gathered from the first book wasn't major. And while I had some problems with the worldbuilding in the first book (what is the Belladonna agency... exactly?) I didn't get answers here either. I still feel that the books are slowly building to those answers as we keep meeting couples in this world. I am confident that the agency's secrets will be revealed in time.
I did enjoy the characters in this book. Barrett is all determined to rescuing a friend's daughter from a sex/blood ring for vampires. I also liked Nick and even though he was taciturn at the wrong moments, still managed to correct the oversight and tell Barrett how he felt. She took more time in that area, however. It was nice seeing the female as the one who had commitment issues. LOL I also ended up liking Jane, the victim whom they were trying to rescue. I'd like to see her in later installments kicking some arse because of her experience here. I think she has the personality for it.
While I did enjoy how these characters were put together, I did find a bit of a problem with the bad guy. He had such potential in becoming part of a story arc where he is a thorn in their side. However, in the end he just seemed too easy to defeat. I also felt that the main story could have been tightened up a bit and perhaps which would then leave more room for secondary character development... or at least tell us more about the various FBI agencies who seem to be involved. If that is to remain mysterious then I would like to know more about born vampires. I just need more worldbuilding!
I give this book 3 stars. I recommend it to those that enjoy a PNR with a bit of action. Be prepared to be at a bit of a loss with the worldbuilding. ;)
This book was received free with the request for an honest review.
Awakened is the second book in Virna DePaul's Belladonna Agency series. I haven't read the first book, and felt just a little bit lost when reading the first chapter of Awakened. By the second chapter, though, I was hooked and it really didn't seem to matter much that I had missed the first book.
Barrett Miles works for the Belladonna Agency, an FBI-run operation that hunts rogue vampires, those who are preying on humans. In the course of investigating a sex ring, Barrett finds that the young daughter of Barrett's late friend has been abducted and will be going on the auction block, sold to the highest bidder. Barrett vows to do whatever is necessary to save her, including joining forces with her old flame Nick Maltese.
Nick is also hunting vampires, those who were purposely turned by the FBI but have become true monsters. When Barrett solicits his help it brings up all of the old feelings they had for each other, and the reasons they parted a year earlier. NIck still loves Barrett and will help her with her mission, and hopefully win her back in the process. Unfortunately they both have so much emotional baggage that they may not be able to get past it all to be together.
They put their personal issues aside to try and find young Jane. The story switches back and forth between a number of points of view, including the kidnapper and victim. It's fast paced, has a good bit of action, and is a well written story. The ending was a little abrupt to me; there was a really big build up to a quick pay off. I also got bit tired of Barrett and Nick being so hold and cold, with it sometime explained and sometimes not. Those weren't major issues, however, and it was still an enjoyable read. I'm definitely going to read the first book in the series, Turned, to see what I missed. There also appear to be enough loose ends that another book in the series should be forthcoming.
The heroine is on the hunt for the daughter of a best friend after she's kidnapped and sold into vampire sex slavery. Her search leads her to the one man she ever loved as he's skills can help her find the girl.
The heroine and the hero had a hot and steamy love after a year ago but when the heroine freaked out and panicked over her growing feelings, she fled. She's always regretted that decision so when she meets the hero again, they waste no time in rekindling their love affair. The hero has loved the heroine for so long but he allowed her space and when she left, he didn't chase her. But now that he's got her back he refuses to let her go again.
He struggles throughout the book with his protective nature that wants the heroine safe and out of the danger her job puts her in. It's his way to shut down and become distant when he's troubled or when he's worried. It takes some time for the heroine to finally admit that she loved him and when he becomes cold and distant, it puts a strain on her fragile trust.
Overall, I enjoyed this book. I wasn't over the moon in love with it though as I felt it was just a tad boring at times. First the book was about the heroine finding her friends daughter. Then it was about rouge vampires trying to kill them. Then it focused on the fact that the hero is employed killing said vampires and dealing with the grief of having to kill his brother when all that time, the government was still making vampires. Then it went back to finding the daughter and working at the sex club she's held in. It was a lot and I never really felt any of these story lines were followed through. It was disjointed and flip flop between plot lines. I did love the two characters together and the sexy hero with his kind heart but tortured soul.
This is the second book in the Belladonna Agency series and I won both book 1, Turned, and book 2, Awakened, in giveaways through Goodreads. As I mentioned in my review of Turned, I took awhile to finish Turned because I had issues with the hero and heroine. Book 2, Awakened, also has some character issues and a rather predictable ending, but I liked it far more than Turned.
In general, on the up side, I like that Barrett and Nick have a history together. It made the instant connection (re-connection?) much more believable and palatable that the fell into bed together *cough* HAWT! *cough*. I like that the lore in this series is a little different. You have born, turned, turned with something extra, and turned going bad vamps. And, it takes more than the usual decapitation or fire to kill them. So, kudos to the author for thinking outside of the box!
On the down side, this book still has character issues. For a former military gal who has done her share of special ops and undercover work, Barrett has a LOT of self doubt and seems to leave a lot to chance (not deciding code names or having keys to get away cars ahead of time). She also seems to rely on Nick a lot for getting her intel. Nick, likewise, is a little better, but like Ty in Turned, throws his share of mantrums. Both of them make me question their emotional maturity.
The setting for this book was a mixed point for me. I like that it wasn't typical, but I was truly rolling my eyes at the predictability of the last 20 pages.
That being said, I liked the book, I like the series, and I am looking forward to the next few installments. I really want to see Peter's story and am still very curious about the mysterious Carley. So, give it a read, you won't be disappointed!!
Wow, the tension continues, more truths are unravelled and the mystery is still there just as alluring as the first book. I love this series. Over and over Virna’s capacity to captivate the reader is mind-blowing. Where does she come up with these ideas? It’s just so good! I loved Nick to bits and Barret, what a woman! A pair definitely well-matched. In my opinion there is more action, mystery, suspense in this book than in the first and perhaps just a little less sexual tension, although, there is still a lot of that!!! We get more inside information that is crucial to the heroes and heroine’s survival. I hate spoilers so I don’t want to say anymore although I really, really do because I don’t want anyone to miss out on this delicious work of art. Virna is an artist! So far everything that I’ve read of Virnas, not only proves her amazing talent as a writer but also the hard work she has put into each and every one of her books. No matter how much talent you have, I think it takes an incredible amount of good old hard work to make a story come together as perfectly as this one. If you like this genre, heck even if you don’t, you WILL enjoy this series it’s impossible not to!
Again, I can’t praise Sean Crisdens performance enough in this second book. He really is so, so good. Personally I do prefer male narrators, but I must also say that there are some wickedly talented female ones out there too and I must give credit where it is due. I have a handful of all- time favourite male narrators and Sean is in the top four for me. A job well done! I’m so glad that this marvellous book has been narrated by an exceptionally talented man contributing to making this series one of my favourites.
Belladonna agent Barrett Miles will have to team up with her former lover Nick Maltese in order to infiltrate a vampire sex slave ring and find a young girl Barrett promised to protect in this riveting paranormal romance.
This steady to fast paced plot keeps readers shivering in anticipation with lots of suspense, action and romance. The well orchestrated suspense scenes intrigue the reader and builds up curiosity and spine tingling thrills as Barrett and Nick work to discover who is behind the sex slave ring and just where their base of operations is. The author brings the story to life with well written scenes and details that capture the imagination and the characters are strong, compelling and draw the reader deeper into the story.
The attraction Barrett feels for Nick is still as strong as ever and Nick is determined to reclaim her heart with red hot seduction, but Barrett has some personal issues that she has to deal with. The reader can’t help but get caught up in all the drama and excitement as their different agendas clash, but they soon discover that somebody’s not telling them everything, which pushes them closer together.
The danger escalates as they go in under cover at a new club that is opening adding to the thrills and the scenes are believable and make the reader feel like if they are right there with the characters. I was completely engrossed in the story and the fascinating world that the author has created, there are hidden agendas and secrets to keep the reader’s guessing and I can’t wait to read the next one - too bad I have to wait so long…right?
This is the second book by Virna DePaul that I have read and yet again I am not disappointed. I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review. This newest installment in the Belladonna Agency series focuses on Barrett an ex-soldier and former lover of partner in arms Nick. Barrett and Nick once upon a time had a very passionate love affair. However, it cooled when Barrett walked away in order to save herself from potential heartbreak. Now Barrett is force to seek Nick's help when her best friend's daughter is kidnapped and taken into a sex ring. I liked the aspect of the kidnapped girls forced into a sex ring. It allowed each of the characters to get past their own bullshit and work toward achieving a common goal.
I found myself enjoying this second installment much more than the first book. The foundation and vampire lore had already been established and DePaul doesn't spend much time rehashing that. Which I loved!!! DePaul trusted that her readers had a smidgen of intelligence and could either re-read the previous book or um use Goodreads..HELLO! So the story isn't bogged down in an effort to remind readers what they should already know. That being said, you really need to read the first book before attempting this one. It will not make as much sense to you and you will have wasted your time and money attempting to read it.
I recommend this book to anyone that enjoys paranormal romance and I cannot wait until the next installment! Happy reading!!
I can count on Virna DePaul to write a well-developed captivating story with characters that I come to care about, which is exactly what she has done in Awakened. I will admit I had hoped that this would be Peter’s story but by the end of the first chapter, I had totally become involved with Barrett’s dilemma and couldn't wait to meet Nick. Friends and family are motivating factors in this story, which helps to keep this paranormal book on the realistic side. Even when a book is full of born and made vampires, I need to find it believable, I certainly do given the world in which this happens.
Another great reason this story is so great is the story line never lagged but completely kept me reading long after the light should be out. There is action, mystery, danger, secrets, surprises and hot romance in just the right balance for my reading taste.
While this story continues from the first book in the Belladonna Agency Series, Turned, it can read fine as a standalone. The leak within the agency or government is a small continuation bought to light in the first book but it’s not necessary to have read Turned to understand this. However, I really enjoyed Turned so I can recommend that book, too.
This is the second novel about the Belladonna Agency and this time around we follow Barrett, an ex-army FBI agent who is tough as nails on the outside but is hiding a vulnerable interior. She meets up with an ex-lover (Nick) who is probably the only man to ever hold her heart and we get to watch as she awakens again to his touch. The vampire element certainly holds my interest since there are some new twists that this author adds to the normal legends of their abilities & I don't mean sparkles! (Not that there's anything WRONG with sparkles...LOL!) I am enjoying this series even if there is a bit of emotional flip-flopping that goes on in the relationship department - I think these characters tend to feel so passionately that they begin to doubt themselves, which can be frustrating for me since I tend to really root for the HEA. I'm looking forward to reading more about this agency, their mission, and the rest of the fascinating characters that inhabit this world.
I received this book from the publisher and the Early Reviewers Program on Library Thing. No compensation for my review was given.
Barrett Miles works for Belladonna. When the FBI deems a vampire a rogue, Belladonna agents go after it, get rid of it and any evidence it ever existed. Barrett's friend, Sarah, died and Barrett promised her she'd look in on her daughter, Jane, and keep her safe. Jane was kidnapped and Barrett's search began. Nick Maltese served in the Army with Barrett. They were lovers until Barrett was kicked out and sent home. Now he's back in her life and willing to help her find Jane any way he's able to. He doesn't want to lose Barrett a second time.
Amazing paranormal, suspense, romance novel. This story line is so well thought out that it's left no room for errors. It ran like a movie from beginning to end. I can picture the turneds, the club, and the mountain like I'd been there myself. This story ran through my mind like a movie. There's plenty of action and interesting characters. This is my first book by Virna Depaul and I was blown away. The romance between Barrett and Nick has the perfect amount of angst and sizzle. I'm looking forward to reading more from this fantastic author.
“I’ve dreamed about you every night for the past year,” he said. “I remember the way you feel. The way you sound. The way you smell and taste. But memories aren’t the same.”
I have to hand it to Virna DePaul. Awakened is a novel that had some of my favorite elements all in one place: romance, paranormal beings (vampires), suspense, and action. But most of all, it had a whole lotta heart.
I was privileged enough to get an advanced copy of Turned, book one, earlier this year and really enjoyed it. So obviously I had high hopes for Awakened. I’m happy to say that this series keeps getting better, as I felt a strong connection to our protagonists Nick and Barrett. These novels can be read independently if you’re new to the series, where each installment focuses on a different member of the Belladonna Agency.
Barrett is tracking a 17 year old girl named Jane who is missing. Her aunt and uncle claim that she has run off with a vampire groupie, but the more Barrett investigates the more it looks like human trafficking. She intercepts a conference call where she spots Jane which leads her to Nick who she used to date when she was in the Army. Nick is now a hunter for the FBI taking out dangerous soldiers turned vampires. He is also a bit of a computer geek hence the link to the conference call. They team up to hunt the vampires dealing in humans at the same time dealing with their feelings for each other.
I loved everything about this story. The mystery was fantastic...missing girl complete with creepy aunt and uncle. Reunited lovers to solve the mystery to have some steamy moments along the way. Answering some questions within the series but generating a few to keep in mind for the next book in the series. So about that mole in the FBI...
A good read by Virna DePaul in The Belladonna Agency series. Barrett's life has changed so much in the past year. From fighting overseas in the army to coming home and working with a secret FBI organization to learning that vampires are real. When a friend's daughter goes missing and vampires are suspected to be at the center of her kidnapping, Barrett has to turn to the one man who could hold her heart, Nick, for help. Nick has the skills and knowledge to help Barrett but he's keeping a secret from her, why they originally split, and once the truth is out can she forgive him and learn to work with him. With danger lurking around every corner the ladies of the Belladonna Agency must work to together to not only save themselves but the young women being used in a blood slave trade. Another good read, really getting in to this series.
A great read for anyone who loves pararomal romance and rouge vampires. You get blood slaves and ex lovers forced to work together to save virgins kidnapped and sold to the highest bidder. With many new twist, the Belladonna agency have their hands full cleaning up the the mess the FBI created with the turning program and rouge vampires doing their own damage. Ex soldiers Barrett Miles and Nick Maltese both have personal issues to deal with. Hunting a new breed of vampire and trying to infiltrate a murderous sex ring. Will they survive long enough to save the latest victim and find love again. Can't wait to read what happens next for the Belladonna Agency.!!
I'll be honest, I almost didn't finish it. I thought the main characters were childish and unbelievable. Towards the end, I'm talking the almost very end, it got interesting. Barrett was in the Army but now she's in a special group that tracks turned vamps. Nick is a tech genius and now he kills the turneds with neuron rage. Barrett goes looking for her friends daughter, who disappeared. She is undercover when she sees her on a sex site. She loses her but enlists the help of Nick. She goes undercover at Club Red, a strip club owned by a Born vamp. Not as good as the first one.
This was the second book in a series about vampires and the FBI. I think I liked it better than the first, but I'm still trying to process it. I didn't really like Barrett. She was just too much. I understand she is working with a shadow agency, trying to find her best friend's kid, dealing with reuniting with her lover, and trying to figure out who the mole is, but sometimes she did really stupid stuff. Still, I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
This book was a struggle for me to get into. I just could not connect with the characters or the plot. Its not that it is poorly written, just not my cup of tea. This book to me was very predictable. So, while this book was not for me, it may be just what you are looking for. I think that if the blurb sounds like something you would like, go for it.
As the book progressed, I liked it more and more, but at the beginning, I was confused and bored. It took me about 30% of the book to really start enjoying it but even then I would not say it was my favorite book. The characters never really gel together. They seem awkward and clumsy around each other. Even after declarations of feelings, they just seem to not really connect. I liked the idea of the plot and felt it was executed fairly well, but often felt forced.
