Turn up the volume, grab a cold drink, and climb aboard the Black Halo hard rocking, dirty, sexy, crazy train.
When Goth rockers, Black Halo split live on stage, vocalist Xane Geist’s determined to put as much distance between himself and the rest of the band as possible. Dani Fosbrook is here to see her favourite band. Instead, she winds up on a plane to Monaco with their sexy frontman.
There, Dani tries her best to hang onto her heart and some clothing. Xane is everything her mother warned her about. However, she suspects he's not being entirely honest about the reason for the band’s demise.
When the truth comes out, can Dani accept the facts, or will everything come undone?
COME UNDONE is a full-length contemporary novel from NYT & USA Today bestselling author Madelynne Ellis about British goth rockers Black Halo.
Madelynne Ellis is a New York Times & USA Today bestselling author of over 50 erotic romance novels.
Madelynne lives in the UK, not far from the Welsh border with her partner, family, & assorted pets. She is currently sipping rapidly cooling decaf coffee, listening to loud music, & indulging her obsession for tattooed bad boys.
Rock & roll and fame isn't all that's it's cracked up to be. Ms. Ellis writes a gritty love gone wrong in this contemporary erotica. Xane Geist is the driving force behind Black Halo. He writes the power lyrics and croons the tormented songs. His songs are personal as they contain deep intimate meaning. With his love betrayed, he pulls out of the band. It's also his chance meeting with Daniella Fosbrook.
This story is filled with angst. It's not a young adult melodrama. It's a truly saddening story of being misunderstood. Ms. Ellis does a good job of showing how a public persona can be misperceived as the same as the private persona. The way she shows how a famous person has lost their way is well done. An underlying message of this story is that sometimes it takes a new element to give a different perspective. This new element is Dani.
The conflict in this story is both believable and heartbreaking. The journey of self-discovery is not easy. What really moves me is the betrayal of a sexual partner and a lover. This twisted love triangle along with the sadistic deception is infuriating. Why is it the one we love is the one who can hurt us the most? This way the heart is stabbed through from the back is what really makes a reader wince. The surprise attack can throw anyone off and for a sensitive man like Xane, it does just that. The characters in this story are well written and clearly shows their emotions and motivation. More depth is added through Dani's side story which meshes well into this plot. The hints and reveal of how she's been punished is disturbing and pulls a reader in. Will there be retribution against the women in the cult?
The ending is a bit of a cliffhanger. This is something that bugs me. However, in this book, it doesn't seem as bad because this story is self-contained. It's not story cut short. The ending does hook the reader to want to read the next book and find out what happens. This romance is recommended for those who love angsty rock star themes.

3-ish stars...
When Dani and her best friend find themselves in possession of an all access pass backstage to Dani’s favorite band, Black Halo she never expected her night to play out the way it did.
Xane has had enough of the band, of the way he’s been treated so callously. Unable to take one more second of the noise inside his head, his decision is made. Who cares if there are thousands of screaming fans in the audience, he can’t stay up on stage – it’s over, and it’s over this second. Trying to escape his band mates that can’t seem to fully grasp what has caused this sudden shift, he runs into Dani, stolen pass in hand – he knows she’s not the PR rep that the pass belongs too, but she’s his ticket out of there.
As Dani provides the getaway car for the man she’s fantasied about her body and mind are at war. She knows she wants to have him, her body knows it – but her mind knows that acting on her desire would be sinful.
One night spent talking and throwing back drinks, Xane realizes that this girl next to him, might be a fan but she’s not just after him for who he is on stage. There is something about her that sees him which is a feeling he hasn’t felt in a long time, if ever. The slow seduction begins, but not before the band is barging in demanding that he give up this notion of a split. Not willing to compromise his decision, he has no choice left but to flee – taking Dani with him.
Dani’s never done anything like this before, she knows that her actions can bring punishment. She knows that if word ever got out that ‘they’ would find out and she’d pay for her sins. But Xane has always been the her one safe place, even when it was just through the speakers of a radio – he sang to her and now that she has a chance to have just a little more time with him there is no way she can say no. Xane’s reasons for breaking up the band, once realized hit a little close to home for Dani and now she has to face some of her own doubts and fears; seeing a truth to a situation that she’s never been forced to face before.
This was a mixed feeling type of read. It took a long time to really get into the story to start off with because there was a lot of information strung together without fully allowing anything to be exposed. I needed some of the pieces, even a few, to be fall into place at a little quicker speed to allow myself to actually connect to either Dani or Xane. Sadly I really didn’t feel that connection by the time the truths were exposed.
This was not a typical rock star romance where a groupie meets the band and instantly the lead singer falls in love – this was more a story of a broken man who just happened to be in a band and a girl that wasn’t looking for one hot night with an idol; but seeking solace in place that had always been her balm.
I am still a little uncertain as to how I felt about this book overall, part of me liked the story once it got moving; but there was just something beneath the surface that never fully engaged me. By the time we get towards the end, one helluva bombshell is dropped that will change everything and then the ending occurs so abruptly that it leaves you a bit stunned.
The story of Dani & Xane continues in the second book set to release later this year and a series for the bandmates will also be coming along, not sure if any of the group members were really all that interesting to really make me consider checking those out, but I think that I will find myself wanting to see Dani & Xane’s story through to the end. Who knows, maybe in the next book the interest for the bandmates will finally occur. They just seem to lack any general care when it came to the situations at hand and were so silent during the book, beyond a few scenes (that did not place them in a good light) to really draw too much attention.
The writing was good, but there was a little bits of moments where there was just too much information thrown at you that made you want to skip through parts. When you were trying to focus on what was going on with the two main characters, it was distracting to have to read about things that drew the focus elsewhere. That is where this story overall lost my full attention, I like to get inside the head of the characters – to get a feel for how they tick but the inner musings and other descriptive type parts of the story didn’t really lead me to having any more insight into the characters beyond what felt superficial.
In closing, I’ll probably read book two just so I see how this story is planning on moving forward (and by doing that, will probably finish the trilogy). I am hoping that with some of the minor things out of the way, the meat of the story can be touched in the next book and maybe the connection I didn’t feel will occur as these two continue on.
When I picked up Come Undone by Madelynne Ellis, I thought I was in for another bad boy, hot rocker read. Boy was I wrong. Come Undone should really be called Come All the Time as if the characters aren’t actually having sex; they’re either thinking about it or talking about it. Sadly though, what this book had in the trouser department, it severely lacked in the romance department. Don’t get me wrong, I like a bit of spice in my books as much as the next person but when it’s just sex, it becomes monotonous and meaningless, and dressing up the sex in different positions or in different locations really doesn't help.
I think for me, there was one major thing that stopped me from caring about these characters and that’s just how stupid they were. Xane (bad boy, hot rocker) was super upset about the fact that his “girlfriend” had married his best friend and neither one had thought to tell him. He was so upset in fact, that it was a major contributing factor to him splitting up the band and taking off. So what really pisses me off here is the fact that one of Black Halo’s greatest fans who thinks she knows the real Xane enters his life and ends up spending a few days fucking him even though she knows he’s upset over someone else. Now, if I knew a guy was upset over someone else and you know, it looked like he was in love with them, there is NO WAY IN HELL I would subject myself to being used as a sex toy or a distraction. I just didn’t feel like Dani had any self respect at all and let Xane lead her down a very devious sexual path, doing things that he liked to do. Bottom line, Xane used Dani and Dani let herself be used because she is stupid and has no self respect so when Xane turns round after a few days of banging Dani (and a few days after he finds out his “girlfriend” has married his best friend) and says he loves her, guess what? I DON’T BELIEVE HIM. And Xane is fooling himself if he thinks that Dani can see the real him.
To be honest, in some ways I’m quite surprised that I actually made it to the end of this book as there were times I wanted to put it down. Perhaps it was because the ending crept up on me and was so abrupt; it didn’t feel like the end at all.
Another thing worth mentioning is the fact that I learned after reading that the author is British but what I saw in the book was a mixture of British and American words/spellings which was really confusing – I thought it might be that the editor was a different nationality to the author. Regardless, these inconsistencies should have been picked up and one can only hope that they will be corrected in the final copy.
Now I know the big question you’re all asking is, will I be reading the sequel? And I’m sure you’re not overly surprised to hear that the answer is no. To put it bluntly, I just don’t care about the characters and their deluded ways. What I will say however, is that if I found a book by the same author and the synopsis grabbed me, I would still give it a go.
I always want to like books and so Come Undone was a huge disappointment for me but at least it was somewhat fresh and different from the normal bad boy, rocker book. Just not in a good way.
Wow...gonna be a hard review...happy right now...nope. Will there be happiness...gosh I hope so!
I really struggled with the rating of this book…a 3 or a 5 or a 1…so I had to ask myself why? A huge factor for me was the complete lack of maturity on the part of our two leads, as well as the entire book of characters. They are so shallow, selfish, and egotistical that I found it hard to connect with anyone. Add to that Xane’s “former” sex addiction that he apparently has kicked (doubtful since all he seems to want is to bang once his mind starts contemplating complex issues). Addiction is addiction and as many readers of my reviews know, I don’t like to read about addictions. That said, I began to feel for Dani and for Xane as they seriously attempt to find some kind of peace within the storm.
This story is so much different than other rocker books (thus the 5 hoot at times) and I loved the travel component to the story. Who wouldn’t want to be 20’s, single, and hot again and whisked across Europe by a millionaire rocker who only wants to give you the big O (or 8 of them)? The deep issues are eluded to time and again and we are given a little bit bigger piece each time these two begin to deal with their issues. That was at least growth on their parts towards being adults and dealing with their pasts. There are some very dark parts to this story, but Ms. Ellis and her Brit Witt make them easier to swallow. I still wanted Dani to move past the cult she was raised in and let go of her prejudice, but I cannot force a flower to open.
This story does not have a cliff hanger, as such. But it also does not give us a happily ever after. Happy for now…not quite, but these two have each other and even in their darkest hour, they hold and comfort each other.
As the quote on my husband’s wedding ring says, “Il et dit, elle me t’aint”…It is said, she hold me.
This is the story of a damaged girl who meets the lead singer, Xane Geist, of a Rock band just as he has left the band. The band, Black Halo, seems interesting and all of the band members are described. They begin an affair, and the emotional connection between seems to develop naturally...first Dani thinks she is going to be just a one night experience but then he gets inside her damaged heart and loves her.
There are a lot of sexy times described, and they do have some unusual episodes in public in Monaco. It's when Steve shows up that things get complicated. Relationship dynamics are not what they initially appeared. Dani has reason to be wary because of her fractured family history. Then they go to Holland to stay at Xanes cousins house, and more things happen that make Dani uncomfortable and question her relationship with Xane.
The denouement seems a bit abrupt, and it seems like a sequel will be coming. The pace of the writing was too slow In The beginning and middle. I think every other paragraph could have been cut out. Then the pacing of the last one third improves as the story picks up, but it is really uneven.
However, this is overall a wonderfully written emotional romance between a shy girl and a Rock Star and will appeal to those who enjoy erotic romance.
I really wanted to like this book, really, really, but I struggled. I nearly bailed a few times, but wanted to give it a good shot.
The blurb is enticing, the story I found less so. It is written in the third person, which I haven't read for a while, so found myself re-reading paragraphs to re-iterate it. I gained zero connection to the characters, and found their banter a tad forced.
There's something about rocker stories that I enjoy, especially when the other person surprises them. I can imagine that rock stars are used to people just wanting to take from them, whether it's time or money or notoriety, just to say "I was with so-and-so". So it must be a little disconcerting and intriguing when someone is obviously into you, but not interested in the sex as everyone else seems to be. She's definitely a fangirl, but she has her line she won't cross. Of course, part of that is because she has issues with nudity as well as her scars, both physical and mental.
I felt really bad for Xane, with how his girlfriend, Elspeth, and best friend/lover, Steve, ran off and got married. Elspeth is apparently a pretty good manipulator for how she finagled Xane and Steve together and then secretly married Steve. I can see how them not even telling Xane before a show could easily affect Xane's performance as well as his motivation to stay with the band. I can almost understand his refusal to speak to his band mates, especially with how they were reacting to everything, as if Xane had no cause to be upset. They seemed to have no consideration for Xane's feelings and it was all about how he should just get over it so they can play a few more shows. Seemed quite selfish on their part.
Dani was just in the right place at the right time. Without Xane knowing it, Xane's music and lyrics have been Dani's comfort for years. She was essentially raised in a cult/commune of man-haters. These women were super strict morally, and as Dani rebelled, they punished her physically. But Xane's music was sort of her escape from her life. Now in college and with the opportunity to sneak into Black Halo's concert, she literally runs into Xane who happens to need a getaway. He's quite rude to her (he believes she's like every other groupie who wants something from him), and ultimately propositions her, but she turns him down, which gets his attention right away. And makes him look closer, and he really likes what he sees. And then Dani bails on him, so he tracks her down and whisks her away to Monaco, where they get even closer.
This story ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, but not an "OMG WTF" cliffhanger. More like a "What will happen now?" cliffhanger. I'm very interested in how Dani resolves Xane's bisexuality, since it's been such an issue due to her history. I also really wonder if she'll track down her dad to get his side of the story now that her eyes have been opened a little more. And I wonder what will happen to Black Halo at this point. So I'm apparently going to have to read the next one. Well played, Ms. Ellis, lol!

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in place of an honest review.
Daniella Fosbrook has been following the Goth-metal band, Black Halo for years. Hearing the lead singer Xane Geist sing his songs is what helped her thorough some of the worst times in her teens that she had growing up. Having her mom join a cult after her father left was not what she wanted. She goes to a concert with her friend Ginny. They still a pass and get to go backstage.
Xane Geist is tired of being the main person in the band that everyone turns to. Especially now since he found out the woman he was sleeping with and his best friend got married behind his back. The worst thing is they are in his band and he had feelings for Steve. He decides that the band needs to break up. When he runs into Dani backstage he has her take him home. It turns into a night neither thought would happen.
This is a great start to a series and I can't wait to see what happens next. The way the book ended makes me want to read the next one. I don't really like cliffhangers but I know that is usually what brings a reader back to read more. I don't even know how the next book will go and that is driving me crazy. I want to know what will happen to the band after the death of one of their mates. I can't say that I like every character but I am enjoying the story.
Wow, I have to say this is a very hard review to write. To be totally honest I loved and hated this book. It was messy, chaotic, confusing and complicated all at once! It made my brain spin and twirl and at times I was a little dizzy from how fast these characters self-destruct! That being said, all the above reasons for hating it also made me love it. I know I think a little part of me loved how twisted all these characters were. Every character in this book is messed up and in no way capable of making healthy choices. They are all deeply flawed and they could get a really good rate on group therapy. It is a really good book. I know that sounds strange but it is. I spent half my time yelling at the characters and going "What the hell are you thinking!". I could not stop reading! I am really not sure if I even like any of the characters in the book. Still, I could not help feel for them. It was kind of like a reality TV show. You know it's bad and totally messed up but you cannot turn the channel! It was a total guilty pleasure. The sex in the book is dirty, kinky and does push the limits in certain areas. Still, it is good and you cannot stop reading. You may read certain pages twice or more.
This book is a total guilty pleasure, Read if you dare!
Xane is a Goth rocker fed up with the way his band, Black Halo, treats him and the fact his best friend married his girl behind his back. During one of their concerts Xane announces the band is over...he has had enough. Dani is a huge Black Halo fan....Their music has gotten her through so many dark times in her life she feels connected to Xane. While trying to find her way back stage to watch the concert she runs into Xane right after he announces the band is done. Dani can't believe her luck when he asks for a ride and the adventure begins. Fights, sex, international travel, and an insatiable Rock star Dani is in for the ride of her life.
I thoroughly enjoyed Madelynne's Come Undone. I did not want to put it down....it had me from the first page! I felt happy, sad, excited, hurt, and tortured right along with Dani and Xane. I cannot wait until Book two comes out and I find out if Dani and Xane continue their love affair and if Black Halo rises from the ashes or if it is really kaput!
I flipping well loved this book, complete and utter brilliance from start to finish. I read All Night Long first and was completely hooked by the style of writing and the irresistible characters, I didn't think this one could be better considering the star ratings given on here but I can't have been reading the same book - this is definitely 5 star all the way in my opinion.
Xane storms off stage after a terrible revelation by his best friend. Feeling betrayed by everyone he holds dear he coerces a fan into getting him away from the venue to his safe place. Dani has led a sheltered life, her one escape has always been Xane and his music, when he asks her to help him flee she doesn't hesitate. Xane realises that Dani isn't his usual type of fangirl and that only fuels his desire for more.
The plot is great, never a dull moment as we get to know the characters and the back story. I was completely smitten with Xane and Dani from the start. My only complaint is I've been left needing so much more! Can't wait for the next one.
I confess to downloading this book to my kindle as it was free and I do so love a bargain.
I didn't expect to not be able to put it down. I think I finally turned the light off about 3 am, in pieces as I'd discovered that part two wasn't yet available and desperate to know more. That was several months ago and I've re-read it twice since then.
It's about a rock band, a band at the top of their game, and one young woman who gets involved with one of them almost by accident.
There is plenty of very hot sex (never a bad thing when it's as well written as these scenes are) and actual real characters that are flawed and all too human, but you can't help falling in love with them too.
I'm not a book snob - I don't care if "people" think I should like something or not. If I like something I say so. If you like stories about hot sexy rock stars and their trials and tribulations, and don't mind some scorching bedroom action then I highly recommend this.
And then you can read all of Madelynne's other books!
Thanks netgalley for a free read in exchange for a review. I am absolutely blown away from this book. Ah-Maz-Ing! I could not put it down! First this amazing author gave us this hot ass rocker guy, and then made him a softie, but didn't make his ass a wimp. The girl.....Dani, was smart, and just the right amount of scared. Falling for a hot rocker guy, especially if he's the one who has been singing words that speak to your heart, is not easy. Even if he is easy on the eyes. I admire Dani's bravery, she was scared but she totally nailed her part. But the Ending....Whoa...I never saw it coming. Loved it. Well written enough to blow my socks off, and the story...hell it's unique as it can get. Overall entertainment at its highest rating.....five fan-fucking tastic stars. The cover was scorching hot, and I'm absolutely kicking myself because this has set on my shelf for awhile.
"You wouldn’t know this about me, but there are three themes in romance novels that I admit to obsessing about. One of those themes happens to be rock star romances. Anytime I see a new rock star romance that looks like it would be worth the money, I snatch it up. These are the books I rarely give myself anxiety attacks over. Most of them measure up, some disappoint, but Come Undone confused the hell outta me...."
This book started out a bit funny n launched into intense right away Dani with her secrets and Xane with his which had me rooting for the two of them because the chemistry was that explosive...I like how Xane was so taken with her n helped her out ny her1st... Beautiful love story n can t wait for book 2.

I adore rock star books, and I had high hopes for this one. Tortured rock star running away with an innocent young girl? It’s probably every rock chick’s secret fantasy.
On stage he’s dynamite. Off stage he rocks her world.
When red-hot, Goth-metal band, Black Halo, split live on stage, fate throws Daniella Fosbrook into the path of sexy vocalist Xane Geist. Initially, Xane’s only looking for a ride home, but Dani tempts him in a way a thousand other women haven’t. Determined to explore their heady chemistry and avoid hashing things out with the band, Xane whisks Dani off to Monaco for a steamy weekend.
There, Dani tries her best to hang onto her heart and some clothing, while Xane soon loses both. However, Xane isn’t being entirely honest about the reason for the band’s demise. When the truth comes out, can Dani accept the facts, or will everything come undone.
It also has a SMOKIN’ hot cover * wipes away drool *
However, it didn’t quite hit the mark for me. I never engaged with either Xane or Dani. Xane was the stronger defined of the two, but he still left me feeling dissatisfied. And while I love it when strangers form an instant and tangible connection, this one smacked too much of Insta-Love.
It’s such a shame, I’d heard great things about Come Undone. Maybe it was just me, but I think Ms Ellis missed a trick here.
Xane was supposed to believe that Dani was different from the usual screaming fangirls. And so early on, when Xane revealed his real name to Dani…
A flash of something – not appreciation, pain perhaps – swept across the surface of his eyes. He blinked, and it was gone. ‘– Alex. My real name is Alexander.’
… you’d expect her to call him that. But she didn’t.
They kept talking about how they ‘knew’ each other (based on her many years of being a fangirl):
‘I don’t know you.’ She didn’t. Not really.
An irritable scowl briefly contorted his expression. ‘Don’t you? You seem to know me more than most.’ He coaxed her under the covers , where he sucked on her lips again, this time stealing both her breath and her senses. ‘Stay.’
Xane had such potential. A slightly kinky bisexual rocker, with a penchant for public sex… but most of the time he came across as a petulant child. His band members didn’t understand his distress, and I had a hard time with it too.
Xane snatched the phone. ‘What?’ he hollered. ‘Aren’t I allowed a minute’s peace?’
‘Not if all you’re doing is using it to screw pretty ladies. How many were there last night, five, six?’
‘I was with Dani.’
‘Yeah, you’re so chewed up about Elspeth and Steve that you picked up the first bird that walked past and ran away with her. That’s not grieving, Xane. That’s being an arsehole. And breaking the band up because you’re not top dog any more is just sad.’
Come Undone. Rock Hard: Book One. Madelynne Ellis.

I love all sorts of romance and have read a few Rock-star ones – and have enjoyed Madelynne's books so this was an easy request. Stupidly though I missed the “book one2 addition...so was surprised to get to end and find it wasn't :) but thankfully there's no awful cliffhanger, a big event but no wondering will they/won't they...though there is that little matter of a past romantic attachment now being available :) Anyway, Dani goes with her friend to a rock concert. Seems like a straightforward rock story opening you'd think? But the band she's loved for ages and the man from it who's unknowingly helped her through a troubled past split – live on stage! Dani's friend has sneaked backstage to their dressing room, but Dani isn't quite ready for that so tries to find her way back to the concert (pre split), hears the arguments and meets her hero Xane on his way out. He needs a lift, and she offers to take him. And from there they go headlong into – what ? Not a romance, not yet, just a quick bit of steam, that turns from one night to a weekend, where things come out from both sides that have been hidden. Xane falls in love with Dani, but he has his secrets, and she's not sure she can accept them. I hadn't connected the link with Anything but Vanilla until we met the characters – I loved that book, and it was great to meet the characters once again. Seeing them was an eye opener for Dani too, and made her begin to thing about what she's always been taught was right and wrong, and wonder if it was time to be more broad-minded. I loved Dani, she's had such a rough and troubled, cruel upbringing. I just wanted her to be happy. Meeting with Xane was a dream come true for her, and she was just what he needed at that time. I loved the way he quickly appreciated all her qualities and was protective of her, but I felt so much for him when his big secret was revealed. Part of it even came as a shock to him – we are good at hiding from ourselves sometimes. There's lots of hot, steamy, sensual sex that fits perfectly within the story, not sex scenes for the sake of titillation, but proper ones where it falls naturally into the action. Its a rock romance – but not a typical teen love story – more one with people who have some big issues to overcome, and like I said, when I got to the end I was surprised there was more to come. But I’m happy too, as I think there's real promise for Dani and Xane if they can overcome a few problems. I'm wondering too where the band goes from here, and where Dani can fit in. So when book two is out I'll be clamouring for it. Priced at £1.99 for 200 pages/540kb it's excellent value and one I’d happily re read. Stars: four and a half.
I’ll warn you right off, this book ends with one messed up, holy hell what was I thinking cliff hanger. I was blindsided and this made me one very unhappy reader. Yes, I know it says book one, but many, many series say book one and don’t end with a messed up confusing ending. So you’ve been warned. What you will get in this book is one hot as hell rock star that is brokenhearted and tired of being taken advantage of by his band mates. You get a nice girl who is messed up from things that happened in her past who feels a connection to said rock star because his lyrics kept her sane. You get two people who are so very different in so many ways but somehow together they made sense. And don’t forget you get one freakin’ disappointing ending.
Xane is Black Halo’s front man and he’s also the talent behind their music, but he’s had it. He can’t take the lack of caring and respect from his band members and when two of them stab him in the back he knows he’s done. While he doesn’t plan on ending it while on stage during a concert that’s exactly what happens and all hell breaks loose. Thankfully he runs into Dani who’s there to see Black Halo perform but she ends up driving away with him and he ends up convincing her to spend some time with him.
These two people who are pretty messed up for a variety of reasons wind up sharing quite a bit of their histories, fears, and even some dreams with each other. It’s evident they both have issues that have never been dealt with and could both use some heavy duty therapy. There is no denying that Dani calms Xane and that she understands him unlike so many of his friends. Dani is closed off and honestly I would have liked to have known more about her than we got but one thing is clear Xane is good for her. Their relationship is fast and furious and the sex is that as well. It’s also hot, yet somehow tender.
This is a complicated story and there are many, many players some of whom I disliked immensely. Others completely intrigued me and left me wanting more but then this whole story left me wanting more. While I appreciate the complexity of Come Undone, I simply can’t deal with the unanswered questions, the open ended story lines, and everything that was thrown at the reader in the last few pages of the book. This isn’t a bad story, I actually enjoyed the train wreck it is, but I’ll wait until the series is complete before I read any additional books.
I have to start off by saying that I have a love hate relationship with this book. I loved the storyline and where the author took it. I also really liked the 2 main characters Dani & Xane. At times though I wanted to slap the shit out of them & knock some sense into these two. They lived in a fantasy land where they ran away from their problems. Also, the insta love connection was a little to much for me considering what just happened to Xane. Besides that and the WTF cliffie ending, I really enjoyed this book. It also doesn't hurt that theres a ton of HOT sex between these two! Like, slip off your chair HOT sex! Xane knows how to fuck and he fucks good and hard!
Xane is the lead singer for a gothic rock band named Black Halo. He's had it with his band, the members' and how they treat him. He ends up quitting the band in the middle of a concert after finding something out that involves his best friend (who's also a band member) and the girl he'd had a thing with (who happens to be in the band also). As he's walking off the stage he runs into Dani who stole a backstage pass to get in. Xane just needs to get out the concert venue & away from his band mates so he tells Dani to drive him home.
Dani our heroine got on my nerves a little bit. She grew up in an extremely religious woman's commune with her mother. They didn't treat her very well while she was there yet, she feels some obligation to them since her mother still lives there. She would sit in her closet & listen to Black Halo to help her get through the rough times & she could relate to the lyrics of the songs as Xane sang them. So when she met him backstage she could relate to him and saw him as kindred spirit.
That brings us to Xane & Dani as a couple. These 2 fell for each other fast and hard. Like 3 days of being with one another fast. Which I get how she falls for him but, he literally just got out of this weird relationship that has left him completely wrecked and broken. Can you really fall in love with someone that quickly after being that hurt? That was the only major thing I had a problem with. With that said, I did like them together. Dani saw Xane the person not the rock persona and she could see through all his hurt and all of his crap. They help each other get through some issues that are plaguing them & Xane is helping her get through some of her fears. Fears and issues that led her & her mother to that commune. I can't wait to read the 2nd book and to see where it's going.
Received an ARC for an honest review 3.5 Star review by Jessica
I loooove me a sexy rock god book, so I was pretty stoked to dive into Come Undone. And Xane Geist, lead singer of the Goth rock band Black Halo, is for sure a sexy beast-he’s pierced, tatted, and filthy in bed. He’s also sensitive and damaged. What more could a girl want??
Xane was Dani’s secret piece of rebellion, her Lucifer wrapped up in an unbearably erotic package.
While the the characters in Come Undone, particularly Xane, intrigued me enough to keep reading to the end, the book as a whole just didn’t come together for me. Xane really was a fascinating character-onstage he growled and splashed in a spray of fake blood; offstage he was sweet and heartfelt. He also had a secret side to him. While this secret ended up figuring prominently in the book, the way it came to light just sort of flew out of left field in my opinion. To be honest, the entire book read this way for me… There were many revelations throughout, but instead of leaving me feeling shocked, I just sort of felt disjointed. There were also many characters introduced in Come Undone. I was disappointed that what could have been a truly fascinating cast was reduced to a group of people whose personalities were just barely hinted at. They were more like cardboard cutouts than living, breathing, intriguing individuals. Xane was the only character I really felt like I “knew.” Admittedly, he was a character worth knowing!
It wasn’t like screwing her was going to mend the gaping hole in his chest.
As the heroine of the story, Dani didn’t ingratiate herself to me. She had grown up under miserable conditions, but her naivete’ never really rang true for me. She swung so rapidly from uptight prude to insatiable sex fiend that it made my head spin.
As a reader, I generally don’t have a problem with “insta-love.” However, Xane and Dani were declaring their love to each other a mere 48 hours after having met. Intense feelings, ok. But love? Uh-uh.
If you’re looking for steam, this book had it in abundance. Xane was a passionate rocker who was well-versed under the sheets. Come Undone appears to be the first book in a series and it did end on a cliffhanger. The other members of the band have the potential to be fascinating lead characters if allowed to fully develop. For this reason, I’m not completely closed off to the idea of reading the next book in the series. And if I can get more Xane? All the better!
Come Undone was a fine introduction to the band Black Halo and the characters inhabiting their world. It's centered on Xane and Dani though.
Danielle 'Dani' Fosbrook is a huge Black Halo fan and an even bigger fan of their front man, Xane Geist. She and her friend, Ginny, are present at the concert where the band apparently calls it quits and thanks to the careless actions of someone, Dani and Ginny find themselves backstage. It's here that Xane literally walks into Dani and sets the stage for Come Undone.
Dani seems a little shy and naive--especially when it comes to men. (<--There's a really good reason for this.) But as she's built a sort of relationship with Xane, if only in her head, she's not about to deny him anything. Dani is strong though. She doesn't take any guff from Xane. She does genuinely care about him as a person, though, and that appeals to Xane.
Xane was understandably pissed off when we first meet him. I did find him to be a bit of a narcissistic wanker but at the same time, I understood his woes. By the end, I did have a better understanding of him--and his desire for respect. In Dani, he finds someone who doesn't just want a piece of him--the rock star. She wants to know him and his feelings. This is something he craves desperately.
Both Dani and Xane have family issues and have suffered terribly in their childhoods. This give them a connection even if they don't know it at first. They are each hiding things from their not-so-distant pasts and I liked how some of these issues were introduced. Ms. Ellis did well at discussing the pressures and problems associated with prejudices, societal perceptions of things such as sexual orientation, religion, and addictions, in my opinion. And I'm certain it'll be further explored as the series continues.
Ms. Ellis also incorporated a lot of smoking sexy times. Their is definitely chemistry between Dani and Xane. I did wish for a bit more bonding between them--more development of the feelings that blossom between them but then, the sex plays a big roll in the plot--and I know their relationship will probably flourish--eventually. The story is told in dual POV and it enabled me to get acquainted with both MCs more easily. I wish Dani's past had been fleshed out a bit more. Much could be done with it but I felt it was used mostly as a vehicle to explain her prejudices.
I found Come Undone to be a compelling read and I'm looking forward to continuing the series.
I have kind of a love hate relationship with this book, the story was fantastic but the ending left me with a holy hell, jesus christ, WTF, cliffhanger to rival all cliffhangers!!!!
This story contains one hot as hell hard rocker of a man, who is tired of all the bullshit of fans thinking they can paw at him whenever they like, and band members taking him for granted, Xane is the front man of the band Black Halo, the brains behind the lyrics. When two members of the band stab him in the back he hits his limit, hes done had enough and walks off stage.
Dani is the nice girl who feels a connection to Xane, as his lyrics have helped her through some hard times in her odd upbringing. She sees the man not the rock star all the other fans see. Dani has her secrets and scars but Xane sees all of her too, not just what is on the outside. These two people are so very different, there both messed up for all kind of reasons, they share some of there past with each other and find that they just work together.
Dani calms Xane in a way, Dani’s upbringing leaves her closed off but Xane seems to make her want to open up. Xane wants to protect Dani and take care of her. Dani and Xane are explosive in bed, the sexual chemistry is in over drive with these two, all the sex scenes are written really well and are fantatsic to read they fit into the story naturally, not just thrown in there just to boost the sales, this is a true erotic romance. There is a lot going on in this book its complex, but the story and plot are easy to follow, the characters are great but you do have love hate feelings towards them and there twisted ways, and i just loved Xanes cousin Ric.
This story has a range of emotions running through, pain, loss, love, sexual energy it has it all.
This book is a great hard rock romance no teeny bopper shit its all grown up, i just wish i had the whole series to read one after the other, as the ending just leaves you wanting so much more, you need to know where all the characters go from here what happens to them now. I loved this book and i would sell my first born to get my hands on the next book in this series! lol.
Come Undone by Madelynne Ellis ****Thank you to NetGalley and HarperCollins, UK/Avon Mischief for providing a copy for review**** Daniella Fosbrook, or Dani, has harbored a love for the goth metal band Black Halo for a long time. Even when it wasn't allowed. She especially loved front man Xane Geist. When attending a Black Halo concert things go a little crazy for the band and the unexpected happens... Dani runs into Xane... literally. Xane seeking a way to runaway decides to ask the girl who snuck backstage to help him runaway from the mess known as Black Halo. Neither expects something to become of it. Dani because she's well... Dani and Xane because he has sworn off love. Well... that is easier said than done. Dani and Xane both try to hang on to their hearts... and clothes... as their chemistry erupts and things go a bit insane. Come Undone is told from the dual POV's of Dani and Xane. I actually ended up reading this one twice. It was an enjoyable book with enjoyable characters and it was definitely steamy. Ellis left no stone unturned when it came to Dani and Xane's sexual chemistry. She filled the book with a lot of great characters and a few that I was not so fond of as well. Xane and Dani themselves were great characters. I did get annnoyed with Dani at times because she could be close-minded about things, but I did understand it since that mainly had to do with her upbringing. Xane was a little wild, but all in all a great character. His band, however, got quite annoying. Ash I didn't mind, but he grated on my nerves a lot. The next book for release is Ash's and I do intend to read it though. Maybe that will give me a little more incite to the mind of Ash. Spook I really liked, but the rest of the group got annoying. Come Undone as a good book that did end in a bit of a cliffhanger and with somethings I did not expect to happen happening. Overall it was a good book and I will be reading more of this series and the series about the band.
Daniella is a huge fan of the band, Black Halo. She feels like the song have helped her along various hard times of her life. So when the opportunity presents itself to see them live and meet the band members, she goes for it.
Xane is tired of the rock-star lifestyle. He doesn't know who to trust or what to do, especially now that he feels that his best friend and band-mate has betrayed him.
I liked the concept, especially Xane's struggles to cope with loving his best friend and losing him to someone else. I loved his honesty and his caring side too.
Daniella, well, it wasn't after the first half of the story passed that I got a sense of who she was and came to understand where she was coming from. I thought she made a good partner for Xane, who despite his celebrity status, just wanted some semblance of 'normal' in his life.
Madelynne Ellis did a great job of drawing me into the story by bringing two different people together. Their connection grew as the story progressed and I could easily see them in a relationship. Their interactions were entertaining and emotional, especially when they opened up about themselves to each other.
Of course, their chemistry was pretty great too. The sex was steamy and sensual, but most of all it they added to the story.
The secondary characters were a great addition to the story. Each one affected the story in one way or another and through their interactions with the main characters I discovered another side to them. I can't wait to know what's ahead for the band and its members now.
Come Undone served as a great start to the Rock Hard series. Usually not a fan of cliffhangers, I came to accept this one. I think there's a lot more story to be told, not only between Xane and Daniella, but about the band itself.
I received this title from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange of my honest opinion.
Come Undone is a different twist on a rock story. I did enjoy the intimate look at a rock star who doesn’t crave the limelight. What I didn’t like was that Xane and the sex seemed over the top. I felt that that was most of the story…with a little bit of dialogue thrown in.
Xane is the lead singer of Black Halo a world famous Goth-metal band. After a concert Xane leaves the band because of his relationship with one of the members goes sour. He runs into Dani in the hallway and convinces her to take him away. Xane finds himself really into Dani and gets her to jet of to Monaco City to hide out from all the publicity. There Xane and Dani start to explore each other and their relationship more.
Xane is…I don’t really know. I want to like him, I really do. But I don’t feel that I can. His band mate and girlfriend just broke up with him because she married another band mate…and wait they were in a threesome…so he finds the first girl and falls in love with her. But he is also bi-sexual and I think feels worse about losing Steve than Elspeth. It just doesn’t work for me.
Dani was an interesting choice for Xane and I wasn’t too sure of her at first. She has some serious issues that she tries to work through. She comes from a woman’s religious commune (who beat her) and she falls for a sex addicted rock star? By the end of the book I felt that she blossomed into her own character and was a passable fit for him.
There is quite a lot of drama in Come Undone. While Xane and Dani leave the rock world for a while the drama seems to follow them. Xane and Dani seem to create their own drama as well. Sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn’t. so with that said…I really didn’t enjoy the book as much as I thought I would. The story is set with a cliffhanger that left me questioning the need for it. The book is quite long so I didn’t understand why Xane and Dani’s story couldn’t be wrapped up in this book.
I received an ARC of Come Undone by the author for my honest review.
*Warning contains insta-love... I thought Come Undone was a great book. The characters are funny, sexy and well put together... Xane Geist is lead singer to Black Halo, a goth metal band, and a definite sex god. Dani Fosbrook is a meek little thing of a girl that just wanted to experience her all time favorite band in concert, Black Halo. She has forever felt a connection with her life and the lyrics of most of Black Halo's songs..she's told Xane (in her head) all of her deep dark secrets and let him share the load..of course he doesn't know this because it was all in her mind..really, who hasn't dreamt of meeting that one star they've crushed on hard, fantasized what the meeting would be like, maybe wondered if they would sweep you off your feet and give you your Happily Ever After..well, that's kinda what Dani's thought and dreamt throughout the years. Finally, a chance meeting has them running off together. The story was very fluent, and it was easy to just lose yourself in the moment, and read, read, read. In order to keep this spoiler free that's about all I can tell you...I don't wanna give any of the plot twists and turns away! A solid 4 Stars...
Two troubled hearts crossed paths and electricity fused them together. Xane and Dani fell in love quickly. Similar pasts and trauma bonded them together. Deep understanding helped them bond. A must read book and series.
~*~My Thoughts~*~ A 5 Star Rating I've had this on my kindle for quite sometime and was hesitant to read it after reading some of the reviews. I requested off of NetGalley that way I'd have to read it and its a rock star book so why not. I was super surprised to find that I loved this book!! I was quickly pulled into the story and didn't want to put it down. I absolutely loved Xane he made the book for me i loved his attitude and everything about him. Dani was also a great character at times she would get on my nerves but for the most part i really enjoyed being inside her head. Anyway i hope this review helps out those who look at reviews before reading. Maybe after seeing this you'll give it a chance and love it like i did. Cant wait to read the rest of the series.
Received a complimentary copy from NetGalley for an honest review.
I've been wanting to find out the whereabouts of Xane since I read All Night Long last year... and oh, my, what a story! I couldn't fall for anyone but Ash—of course— but I admit that, even though I knew the way part of the events played out, I was on Xane's side. I was actually upset with everyone else and kept thinking 'how the hell can you not understand??' Dani is good for him... perfect, I'd dare say. However, I don't know how I feel about her yet. I mean, I understand she has issues, however, some of her reactions seemed a little out of character to me. Only time the next book will tell... Ellis' writing is always beautiful and full of emotions. I'm so glad I have the rest of the series at hand, I can't wait to delve into it!
