I was wrong; this book shows an actual improvement over the last one. It's still not great, but the story seems to flow more organically. The biggest problem is still Grimlock as Autobot leader; not only does his characterization hurt him, but it hurts the other Autobots as they allow him to keep his position. Still, this isn't bad.
