Let me first say that when I got this book in the mail I didn't want to read it. I'm not going to beat around the bush, the cover is BUTT UGLY. It is really bad. It is a weird yellow with old-fashioned writing and a rickety looking roulette wheel on the cover. It looks like the book would be about grandma's old-folks home's summer trip to Atlantic City. I was not excited to crack this one open. But It was a Goodread's First Reads win so I foraged ahead.
I was NOT expecting a sex-filled, hot hot hot romp in Vegas. Note to author, please change the cover ASAP! A sexy guy or girl or a tattooed arm or piercing, modern type-faces, something up-beat for heaven's sake. Please.
Okay, onto the plot. A recent widow in her early 40s takes a trip to Vegas and meets a sexy, wealthy, tattooed younger man. A dork and romantic at heart but with a bad boy exterior. Swoon! Sexiness and love ensue.
The negatives? This book needs an editor. BADLY. There are countless errors of "your vs you're" and the like and bigger errors like "jester" instead of "gesture" (I was a bit confused for a second). Also I got a little peeved at all of the strange vagina euphemisms. "Tweedlebug" ""duh da"? REALLY? People actually call their lady bits those things??? The biggest issue for me, though, was the book ended up being too long-winded for me. The pace dropped off towards the end and I found myself rushing my reading to get to the end.
Overall this book is sweet, sexy, and fun and much better than I was anticipating. So much more YOUNG than I would have guessed based on the cover. Yes I judge a book by it's cover.
**edited to add- the author just told me she is changing the cover and getting an editor... super yay!!**
I signed up for the book because I thought that the premise sounded interesting; a woman whose husband had just died up and goes to Vegas to try and rejuvenate her life and meets someone who she finds incredible attractive and then wonders what she should do. However, I wasn't anticipating that there wasn't really a plot line. The majority of the whole book reads like soft porn, which is fine whatever, but I felt like there was little else in terms of a plot. And seriously, they got married after a week....I feel like that's just too over the top. Especially if her husband just died and she can't even stay in the same hotel. And then her kids were just ok with it?? I feel like the author was great at writing the sexual sense but the rest of it just seemed very contrived and a poor writing style honestly.
