So, let me start off by saying that the base plot of Dragon Raja is fairly cliche. You've got this ordinary guy living with his relatives who don't care much for him. One day, he's invited to join a private college meant for training dragon slayers and he's the top rank there, outclassing everyone else. Classic zero-to-hero MC story, right?
But. But, what gets to me about this book is how relatable Lu Mingfei (the MC) remains throughout. The whole "slaying dragons" thing is more of an underline to themes like loneliness and friendship and love. Mingfei does some great things, but he stumbles into them by luck and constantly needs assistance from those around him, because despite his rank (which neither he nor anyone else understand how he got) he's still that ordinary guy from China.
I particularly enjoyed the one-sided romance on his part.
I'm not familiar with stuff like underwater diving or weaponry, so I can't comment on the accuracy but I can say that Dragon Raja described it with verisimilitude that made me believe the author knew what he was talking about :p.
One negative to this book is how it firmly dates itself by using stuff like brand names or entertainment (Omega watch, Bugatti Veyron, Maybach, etc). There were also way too many references to other media -- in fairness, Romance of the Three Kingdoms is a classic and likely it's my fault for not being familiar with it, but there were others like Harry Potter too.
And when it comes to story issues, there's one reveal () that felt like it came out of nowhere. I think it could have been a hard hit if it had more build-up and hints.
Despite all that, there was a certain heart to this book that touched me and I enjoyed reading it. So 4/5, would rec =D.
I used to like reading novels very much, one after another to read all five, looking back to the first one is the best. I have watched the main line of the first part many times, and the luck of knowing the Dragon's is still unforgettable. People always move on. Lu Mingfei leaves home and makes many new friends, but the story always ends with one tragedy after another. It also reflects my unhappy life. I empathize with him, continuing to imagine his story, dreaming my own dreams along his surroundings, alternately sad and giggling. I often felt lonely in the midst of all the laughter: I always thought of my imminent separation, and this particular loneliness, which I read in the later books, intensified. I like the text of the world's only tortoise, living in the world only to their own never abandon. Now, this view of life has not been changed by my colorful experience, but rather it has colored all my memories with a similar color, and I finally realize that must be a life of parting.
It has been a long time since last time I read novels online (网文). 江南 uses his powerful logic and prudent settings to construct a fantasy world. There are also reflections on humanity throughout the book. Perhaps there is a 路明非 in everyone's mind.
