A missing vampire princess. A soul fractured among five young human girls. One loyal vampire with a grudge. Can vampire soldier Damian set aside his personal feelings to follow orders? Can princess Amelia's soul be reunited in time for the meeting of the three clans? Will her brother, Matthew, fight for the right to rule? Who will prevail?
Elaine White is the author of multi-genre MM romance, celebrating 'love is love' and offering diversity in both genre and character within her stories. Growing up in a small town and fighting cancer in her early teens taught her that life is short and dreams should be pursued. She lives vicariously through her independent, and often hellion characters, exploring all possibilities within the romantic universe. The Winner of two Watty Awards – Collector's Dream (An Unpredictable Life) and Hidden Gem (Faithfully) – and an Honourable Mention in 2016's Rainbow Awards (A Royal Craving) Elaine is a self-professed geek, reading addict, and a romantic at heart.
Amelia, a vampire princess, had her soul sent into a human to escape her life. But something went very wrong with the voodoo and her soul was fractured. Now her old guard and promised husband to be, Damian must find the 5 woman housing Amelia’s soul and return her to her rightful place as queen of the vampires.
Runaway Girl is a highly complex tale with many characters and sub-plots leading to the discovery of each soul hosting human girl. Elaine White has woven an interesting and original tale of family, betrayal, love and friendship. I enjoyed this story and look forward to journey were Elaine White will take us next.
This copy of Runaway Girl was given to me by Elaine White in exchange for an honest review.
First of all, I LOVE this cover. The cover alone made me want to read this book. In a world populated with vampire books Elaine White gives us a completely original tale filled with complex family relationships. White takes the emphasis off the predatory vampire and human relationship and instead focuses on their world. She takes us inside a complex world of clans and politics, family vendettas and warring lands.
When the vampire princess Amelia grows tired of her restricted life she seeks out the help of a voodoo master. He separates her from her soul and allows it to live on in human form. But, he has fractured her soul among five human girls. In these lives Amelia can live over and over, bringing bits and pieces of herself to each life.
Damian is the warrior who was her guard. And was also her betrothed. It is his quest to find the five girls who hide her soul and bring them together. What he doesn't know is that each girl also has their own agenda and their own powers. Added to the mix is Amelia's brother who has his own own idea about who should be restored to power. One by one Damian hunts the girls down and kidnaps them. The girls are thrust into the vampire clan and it's political agenda, but can they even bring Amelia back. Can they even reunite the fractured pieces of her soul?
If you are looking for "blood sucking" vampire violence, you won't find that here. These vampire's don't sparkle, they aren't vegetarian, and they are more "Blade" than "Dracula."
What you will find is a more grown up and complex story woven between many characters and worlds. What you will find is a story line that demands attention. That begs you to find the intricate detail the author puts into the story. What you will find is world within a world. While I would have liked maybe a little more back story on a few of the characters, maybe a little clearer on what a particular vendetta was, the story grabbed my attention and held it. The focus is less on the vampire and more on the relationships. My favorite character by far was Kaitlin. I don't want to give any spoilers away on her, but just know that she is original and her story would make a good book all it's own. She was the perfect combination of spunk and sweetness, all rolled up with a magical sparkle. (He he)
I was given this book to read by Lovers of Paranormal (LoP) and Elaine White and want to thank them first for allowing this opportunity. To be honest I have read a number of the reviews to see what others opinions were on this book and was excited to read this book. I must say that I was extremely confused with the number of characters contained within this book and trying to keep them straight. Characters came and went within this story and I don't know if it was me but I felt that I needed some sort of charting system. Matthew was predominant in the beginning but then was mentioned rarely once the story got going. Chase was captured and then "released" but we really did not get to know her. Finn and Megan just walk off to their future together (really?) - what happened to Aaron and the boys besides just a side note? Why was it bad to have all this magical power? I did start catching on and keeping everyone straight but it probably took me to about 1/3 of the way through reading the book. That being said - I did grow to love this story but felt as exhausted as Damian did most of the time. He was really put through the ringer but his love for his leader, people and race rang true to the very end. I would have loved to gotten to know Kaitlin a bit more as she is so strong in the middle of the book then falls off for most of the story until the end. I almost threw my Kindle when Damian knocks her out so that Amelia can take over her body. ...and then poor Maria that is overtaken by the heartless "child" Amelia - can't they give Maria back her soul? Please? I thought that some of the female characters were thrown into some impossible situations and then just "accepted" them without a fight or after-thought. I would be PISSED if someone messed with my head to make me believe something that was not real. Ultimately, I loved the ending but could have done with less chaos in the middle of this book.
I got this book from the author, free of cost, in exchange of an honest review from my side.
Firstly I would like to thank Elaine White, author of Runaway Girl for giving me this wonderful opportunity of reading and reviewing this book and would love to thank Lovers of Paranormal group for allowing me to read this book under the Read to Review scheme and thanks to Carrie for being such a wonderful and patient moderator.
Ah, great and intriguing experience and hats off to the author because she thought out this whole story line and unique plot. The characterization is awesome and the fact really touched my heart that the characters are well developed and fully flourished.
The author brought a total new take on the vampire genre where she made them familiar and part of the regular world rather than being spooky and alien.
The total concept of shattering soul and getting distributed among five different girls and then the quest of bringing back all the shattered parts and making them one and whole was really intriguing and interesting.
The action is power-packed and the suspense and mystery that the author introduced here with a pinch of romance is great and well thought and it really did spiced up the story.
Thee are many shocking revelations and unexpected twists and turns which make it a real page turner and it grabbed my attention and kept a firm hold on it till the end.
The different POVs really made it easier for me to connect to different characters and experience their emotions more accurately.
A great and must read for ya all so go and garv your copy and enjoy the ride folks!
Runaway Girl ( The secrets of Avelina Chronicles # 1 ) by Elaine White I received this book in exchange for an honest review by the Author and the “Lovers of Paranormal” Group on Goodreads.com When I read the book description I was very eager to read this book as it sounded like a great read about Damian the Vampire soldier and his search for Amelia the missing Vampire Princess who’s soul had fractured and found homes in 5 human girls. I loved the book cover art and liked the font the book was presented in. So that was a great start. But as I started to read the book I was a little disappointed as the story seemed very disjointed. There were so many characters, none of whom were very well described or well defined. I was very confused as to who was who and spent a lot of time paging back trying to make sense of it all. There are also many, many sub-plots that intertwine leading to the discovery of each soul-fragment hidden in the various girls, which also made for heavy reading as the story did not flow seamlessly and each girls’ story didn’t transition well from one to the next. However that being said, the book did improve near the end, the sub-plots finally did all come together and the main characters did evolve. The story concept was excellent and the author should be congratulated on an original and interesting Vampire book.
I just finished Runaway Girl by Elaine White and absolutely loved it. I know I am slow reader and I dont finish books as fast as many, but I got sidetracked by Percy Jackson, work and my own new novel which has in part, been inspired by this great book.
The best aspect of this book is the fact that it takes place in a world where Vampires are not a big secret, most know about and even go to university with regular folk. I thought that idea was cool, very original indeed.
The book is huge, and after you get through the lengthy prologue about the Vampire Council, which is intriguing to say the least. Then you get into the action right away, there are some great scenes in the opening chapters and the multiple character viewpoints give a fantastic wholistic all knowing element!
This multi character style got me thinking and I have decided to set my new novel up in this style. This way we get splashes of action from so many angles! I have Elaine White and her great book to thank for waking me up and bringing me back to this!
An interesting vampire adventure! A vampire (kind of a pain-in-the-butt vampire) gets her soul severed into the living souls of multiple girls. However, her soul need to be reunited so she can marry Damian (aahhh, Damian), and rule the clans! Of course, it’s not going to be that simple, silly readers! White leads the reader through multiple twists and turns, at the end the readers is pleasantly pleased with the direction of the story…and it’s just the beginning! Final thought: Vampire enthusiasts indulge!
I love vampire stories (obviously, having written a couple myself, and read a million of them) and I'm always on the lookout for something a little different than the norm. Runaway Girl fell into this category immediately when I read the Prologue.
Runaway Girl begins at a meeting of the Vampire Elders who are discussing the leader's daughter 'Amelia'. As a disruptive influence, she has been magically transferred into more than one human body over a period of two centuries, and has not been part of their world. Lucius, the leader, needed his 'pure blood' daughter back to take over his reign along with 'Damian' who he has been grooming to rule alongside her.
The idea of a Vampire becoming a 'cuckoo' so to speak, and jumping in and out of human bodies is a unique storyline in itself, and the possibilities for all kinds of weird interactions and magical, unexpected occurrences abound. I collected my three mugs of tea, put on my slippers, and made sure that the children were in any house that wasn't mine. Not difficult ,as they are 16, 19 and 25, so they are more than willing to race out the door like Linford Christie at the first opportunity!
Runaway Girl continues to explain that Amelia's return to Vampire society is not going to be easy, as her soul has been fractured and the pieces are divided into different human beings, the identity of which is not known. The witch has identified possible candidates by their 'beyond human' capabilities, and these must be reclaimed in order for Amelia to return whole-souled. Therein begins the search for the gifted humans and a window into each of their lives; throw in a Vampire son 'Mathew' who also believes that he is the next natural leader, and has chosen a human woman 'Kasey' to be his partner, and you can see the conflicts which will begin to emerge. I won't say much more about the story for fear of this turning into a synopsis instead of a review, but I just wanted to set the tone of the novel to give you an idea of its complexity.
You will have to pay attention as you read because there are a lot of in-depth characters (some with a story within the larger story) and the writer is fast-paced, though not too fast that you can't keep up, The relationship between Damian and Amelia, both before her transference into humans, and afterwards, when he forms relationships with the various humans she is part of, is strange and interesting and I found myself hooked until I found out which human girls were the ones they were after. I think the differences in each of their personalities reflected a particular aspect of Amelia's character.
The whole story is an absorbing one, and you won't be able to grasp it over a coffee break at work. Set the scene as I did, remove beloved distractions as I did, and enjoy at your leisure.
Review to followThe premise of Runaway Girl interested me from the start. Amelia, a Vampire Princess with some serious issues decides that she will perform a rite with the aid of a voodoo master. The plan is that she will allow her soul to reside within a human until such a time when she returns into her vampire self, hopefully, having learned how not to be a jaded princess. However, the voodoo master’s master plan doesn’t work the way it was supposed to, and her soul is fractured into the bodies of five human girls. The pieces of her soul must be retrieved and restored into one girl in order to bring Amelia back as the new leader of the Vampire race.
Sounds cool, doesn’t it? Elaine White has crafted an interesting and complex plot line with original characters and a unique storyline that will definitely keep you on your toes. What I would have loved to see is fewer points of view or less frequent perspective changes. Runaway Girl switches point of view between seven-eight different characters, and there is a new character every chapter. As a reader, I struggled to keep up with that a bit. If the number of POVs had been decreased or we stayed with each POV longer, I think the challenge would have been eliminated and I would have had even more of a connection to the characters.
If you enjoy vampires and want to continue your vampire education past books like Twilight and Thirst, you might enjoy Runaway Girl.
Bottom Line: Vampire lovers will thoroughly enjoy Runaway Girl,as well as White’s unique take on vampire lure.
Runaway Girl is the first book in the Secrets of Avelina Chronicles. It centres on the character Damian, a vampire soldier, and his search for the missing vampire princess, Amelia. His past with Amelia, of both love and hate, send his emotions spiralling from wanting to find her, to wanting to kill her whenever she gets back. However, her soul was split years before, when sent into a human body. Damian must find the five human girls who have the potential of housing Amelia's soul fragments, and unite them in order to return the princess to her rightful place.
What complicates matters is the fact that Damian and Amelia are promised to one another. They are set to unite, in order to unite the three vampire clans for the first time in centuries. Without Damian, Amelia cannot rule, but with Amelia, Damian cannot take his place on the throne. And that is only if Amelia's brother Matthew, does not fight for his right to take his fathers place as leader of the vampire clan.
The more I read this book, the more I love it. The strength, the love, the determination of the characters and their stories...the interwoven friendships that stand the test of time. Overall, Runaway Girl is a novel about finding yourself, finding out who you are and what you feel, without letting anyone else influence you. It's about family and friendship and loyalty. Even if that loyalty asks you to give up something, or someone you love.
*The copy of this e-book was given to me in exchange for an honest review*
Gaaah, I hate giving 2* star ratings!
Runaway Girl is a tale about one man's quest to piece together the soul of his bride-to-be in order to become an Elder i.e. rule the future clans. When I was first approached about this book I was so excited to begin reading it; it contained the paranormal and an incredibly interesting and original twist: the fracturing of a soul and the hunt to reunite these pieces via 5 girls. Sounds amazing!
Now let me explain my reasoning behind the rating. I found this book to be a very original idea with so much potential, but I was unable to get past a few things. I couldn't relate to any of the characters, I felt it difficult to empathise with them. I also found it difficult to keep up with the switching narratives, there were so many characters and personalities it took a lot of attention to keep up with where it was going. I felt that there wasn't a lot of emphasis on the grudges within the novel. I am left wondering what is going to come in the following novels...
Despite these aspects, I still believe that this tale has potential. It's a very interesting concept, I'm just disappointed that I didn't enjoy it more.
Was a little diappointed when I first started to read this as the story seamed to jump about but it all came together and I was overjoyed. I've been interested in Vampires since watching Buffy The Vampire Slayer. This book has a mixture of action, romance and Vampires turning humans. The Story is about trying to get back the Soul of the Clan Elders Daughter who had a spell put on herself after she kept trying to run away. The Soul jumped from human girl to human girl and part of her soul remained within them. Damian used his gifts to seduce the women into thinking that they knew him and that they were in love with him to make it easier for him to take them back to his Clan Elders. Some of the women were turned and some that were was done against their law. This book is just about being turned into a Vampire but about Falling in love and joining the different Clans together to prevent war. If you like romance, love, vampire action and much more then this is definately the book for you.
I received this book By Elaine White for an honest review. Sorry it took me so long life gets in the way of me reading. I appreciate her letting me read & review this great read! This story is about getting the soul back from the clan elders daughter who had a spell put on her after she tried to run away. Also this story has allot to do with being turned into a vampire with falling in love and joining a certain clan to prevent war. I loved how the vampires and humans loved together but i wish the world was better explained. I know most Paranormal world you have to know how there world works in this story it was to the point and then full action from there in till the end.I really liked this book. If you love romance, and Vampires and Paranormal grab this book and check it out you won't regret it.
My favorite characters are of course the handsome, soon to be King, Damien and his beloved Kaitlin! I absolutely love their growing romance throughout the story! White has woven this complex story with a lot of strong characters that make their selves stand out alone in the story! A must read for every vampire lover.
I give this book a five star review. Great cover. To me this was a new twist on a vampire story. A vampire gets her soul severed into the living souls of five girls. Damion tries to find the one girl who has the most of Amelia within them. Interesting read on how he goes about doing this. If you like vampire stories, this is a must read.
I'd be the first person to admit that I don't read much vampire or gothic fiction; my last dip into the genre was Ann Radcliffe's classic late eighteenth century gothic novel, The Mysteries of Udolpho almost twenty years ago, and I haven't even seen the box set of Buffy. Nonetheless, maybe being new to this kind of fiction allows me to see it with fresh eyes, and appreciate this book as a novel in its own right, a proper story rather than seeking originality in the genre.
There's certainly a lot of freshness about Ms White's book, and it has a fast-paced opening with plenty of characters making an early appearance. Certainly it takes a certain flair and energy to keep several inter-connected storylines moving along, and the opening premise of a search for a figure of great significance is always going to get things off to a swift start. The reader is quickly drawn in, not merely by the compelling experiences of the characters we meet but by the comfortably engaging worlds that Ms White paints for us.
What is obvious, even to the relative vampire novice that I am, is that the fracturing of Amelia's soul is a clever idea both in story terms and in reaching out beyond the vampire genre to readers with an interest in magical realism and spirituality. Magic aside, it's an interesting way to explore the tensions in all our personalities and there are certainly enough tensions in this book to keep the reader thoroughly engaged.
It says as much about my reading background as it does this novel that at times I felt there was just a bit too much going on, but that is the style of fantasy fiction born of imaginative and complex worlds and if it didn't suit me as a reader then that is, as I say, as much a comment on me. Probably if I'd had more experience of this fiction, I would have got everything straight in my head, because I would have gone into reading it with more refined expectations of what I wanted to read in this sort of novel.
Certainly, Elaine White is an imaginative writer who has crafted a very readable book, and it's clear that without limit to that imagination, she has much more to offer her readers.
I received this book in exchange for an honest review (LoP or Lovers of Paranormal).
I had such a hard time reading this novel. There were some really good ideas, such as, vampires being out in the open, a soul being divided into pieces, and the quest to piece them back together. But I feel like there were so many things being thrown into the story that it was hard to focus and feel invested in any one situation or character. It was difficult for me to keep track of who was who and what they were and what that character's place in the story was. I was all sorts of confused. Aside from the vampire mythology, there was another story about kings/queens and a magical island? I was just like HUH?!?
I think we need a little more focus on a handful of the characters. I could not get invested into any of the characters since I never knew if they would be important or not. It was like every chapter was a new person with a new agenda. It didn't all come together for me till the last quarter of the book. The action was good! I liked that we had a happy ending. It was odd to me how everyone was so complacent and just kinda went with everything: Oh, they killed my bf "ok", oh I'm being kidnapped "ok", oh they want to put another soul in my body so that I will no longer exist "ok". It was hard to root & cheer for anyone.
So, Ms. White had some really good ideas but perhaps too many to put into one novel. I definitely laughed out loud when Daman punched Kaitlin, whether or not that was an appropriate reaction, I dunno, but there it is.
This book, for me, was a little rough around the edges. There is a lot going on in this book and a lot of characters. I've read a book about souls being split but the author took it further and did it with several people. I've read stories that have several stories going on and I just didn't find some of the stories believable and I didn't even really want to follow it anymore. If you are going to have this many characters and this many story lines I feel the story need to be flowing and have a smooth transition from one story to the next and at times I had to go back and read something thinking, what? I think if the author goes back through it and have the story flow and not create things as the story goes to cover the holes it would be a lot better. The book got better, way to late in the game for me, like 200 pages in and by that time I just wanted it to be over. There were a few parts in the story I liked, Kaitlin and Damian (later after a few meeting with Kaitlin), Maria's story line was okay and I like the add of the teen boys and Fin. I didn't connect with any of the characters so I couldn't connect with any of the story. I didn't believe in Damian, his power and all his charms either.
(I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. LoP)
(This annoys me, the review I posted somehow did not get saved) There are some very redeeming elements is this story. Especially a world where vampires and humans live together openly makes for an interesting setting. Hospitals that are geared to help those bitten and nightschools to keep vampire kids off the streets make for very original possibilities.
What threw me off the story however, was the constant switching in POV and the meriad of female characters that, because they did not get enough depth and attention in the spotlight, were hard to keep apart. For this reason, I am sorry to say that I could not finish the book, I got thoroughly lost.
I believe that with some more editing and a focus on less characters and better character development, this story certainly has promiss.
The world of vampire novels has been resurrected. Not since Anne Rice, have I been so engaged in a novel about Vampires. The storyline moves ever so smoothly and the character development is rich and beautiful.. I cannot wait to get my hands on the other books in this series. If they can make a movie from Twilight and a series from Vampire Diaries, they can certainly make an award winning film from this book series.
I was given this book in exchange for an honest review for LoP. I honestly couldn't get through this book. I only read the first three chapters I tried to go further. Amelia a vampire princess didn't want to be a vampire she wanted to be human. Her soul was broken and her family were trying to find the pieces. Overall I didn't like it.
