Jade returns home to Chapel Springs after years of protecting her fragile heart. Then along comes Daniel, making her long to dance again.
Creative and complicated, Jade McKinley felt like a weed in a rose garden growing up in Chapel Springs. When she left, she thought she'd never look back. But now, pregnant, alone, and broke, she has no other choice but to return.
The mayor of Chapel Springs, Daniel Dawson, has been an honorary member of the McKinley family for years. While his own home life was almost non-existent, Daniel fit right into the boisterous McKinley family. He's loved Jade for years, but she always saw him as a big brother. Now that she's back, his feelings are stronger than ever.
As Jade attempts to settle in, nothing feels right. God seems far away, she's hiding secrets from her family, and she's strangely attracted to the man who's always called her "squirt." Finding her way home may prove more difficult than she imagined.
Denise Hunter is the award-winning author of more than 40 novels, three of which have been adapted into Hallmark movies.
Denise writes heartwarming, small-town romances, peopled with layered characters who have real-life issues. Her readers enjoy the vicarious thrill of falling in love and the promise of a happily-ever-after sigh as they savor the final pages of her books.
In 1996, Denise began her first novel, writing while her children napped. Two years later it was published, and she's been writing ever since. Her books contain a strong romantic element, and her husband says he provides all her romantic material, but Denise insists a good imagination helps too!
Denise and her husband live in Indiana, where they raised three sons, and are currently enjoying an empty nest.
This is one of my favorites Denise Hunter books. I loved both of the lead characters, and I also find the McKinleys to be a great family. I adore the descriptions of their get-togethers. They just feel warm and real. The story is not too complex, just a sweet, romantic story that had me rooting for the characters from the beginning.
Some of the plot points are tragic, but even so, Hunter infuses the story with hope and the simple joys of real life. The consequences of evil can seem hopeless, but this story shows that even a terrible action can be transformed into something new and beautiful. The hurt and pain are still there, but healing is possible. Hunter doesn't sugarcoat things, but neither do things feel gratuitous or unnecessary. I do think that those who have experienced sexual trauma or rape might tread carefully, especially at the beginning of the story. The other thing that didn't ring quite true for me is how long she hid her pregnancy. Not sure if it was entirely realistic but I could suspend my belief since she did keep herself away from her family. I was skeptical though that other people in the town wouldn't notice and mention it to someone in her family. Other than that, I thoroughly enjoyed the story.
While this could be read as a standalone, there is enough backstory in book one to make me glad that I read it first. Plus, it's just a really good story in its own right, so I say read it first. This story kind of capped off my summertime reading, but it's a great read for anytime. Pick it up if you're looking for a sweet romance with realistic life issues. I'm looking forward to book three in the series for sure.
I thought this one was just okay. I guess I was expecting something different. There will be spoilers below...
The book starts with Jade being drugged and raped. She decides to move home when she finds out she is pregnant with twins. So, I thought the rape would play a bigger part in the story. I mean when the book starts out like that you'd think it would be something big she would have to deal with it. For the most part it is hardly ever talked about. She accepts the fact that she is pregnant pretty easily and it's maybe mentioned once that she was worried about whether they would look like the father. She has a couple freak-out moments, but otherwise she's seemed to put the whole thing behind her. I guess I was just surprised by how easily she was coping. She does tell Daniel about what happened, but no one else. The very end she finally tells her mom and explains why she didn't press charges (which was also bugging me). I guess I just think if you're going to have that as a storyline I would expect to see her deal with it more. As it was, I think it was pointless and I would have liked the story more if that whole thing had been left out.
The romance was okay. I liked Daniel, he was a sweetheart. They have been friends for a long time and he has been in love with her forever. I thought Jade was a little annoying, she was still heartbroken over losing her boyfriend and didn't dare to love again. I get irritated in stories where the couple doesn't communicate.
Overall, I was a little disappointed. I was hoping for a more heartwarming story and with the rape and all her other hang-ups, it felt like more of a downer.
Content Romance: Clean Violence: Moderate (the first chapter she is drugged and raped. She is drugged so she doesn't remember too much and is pretty vague. She has a few flashbacks that are also vague.)
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
***Update*** Just finished rereading this book and loved it even more the second time!!!
Denise Hunter is one of my “go to” authors when I want a romance that tugs at my heart and always leaves me smiling by the end of the book. Dancing with Fireflies is no exception to that. I loved this book!
Dancing with Fireflies is part of the Chapel Springs series. I think you could read this as a stand alone, but it would be so much better to read it as part of the series. Daniel has been a part of Jade’s life for many years. He has always been like a big brother to her and is very much a part of her family. But somewhere along the line, Daniel fell in love with Jade. She was so in love with another man that she never felt the same or realized that Daniel’s feelings had changed.
This book begins with Jade’s return after having been gone an entire year. She is returning home and is pregnant and alone. Daniel still loves her. She still sees him as a best friend. This makes for wonderful tension in the book! There were just so many moments that made me catch my breath and this is one of those books that I stayed up way too late into the night to read!
Denise Hunter weaves love and attraction with feelings of fear and desperation in her stories. She has an amazing ability to create characters so very real. And she creates beautiful happily-ever-afters that tie up her books at the end and leave me with a smile on my face.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review, which I have given.
This is the second book in the Chapel Springs series. It does include characters from book one, but could easily be read as a standalone novel. Jade, the free spirit of the siblings, had left home to spread her wings and heal from an unrequited love. But when something tragic happens to Jade, she returns home seeking the support of her family and best friend, Daniel. Unbeknownst to Jade, Daniel has been in love with Jade for many years. He tortures himself by always being there for Jade, but not expressing his feelings, because he loves her unconditionally. Due to losses Jade has suffered she is afraid to let someone love her, and to allow herself to love. Can Daniel melt her heart and break the walls Jade has placed around herself? A sweet romance with enough substance to keep me engaged. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
I loved this book! It took me just a bit to get into it, but then built and built to a really wonderful ending. Daniel and Jade have been dear friends since childhood; while he has long cherished a deep love for her, he's not been able to express it. She'd been engaged to another man and lost him tragically —but now, she's home, pregnant with twins from a date-rape. Jade's always counted on him, but it would be strange to think of him as a man to be attracted to—right? But she leans on Daniel more and more after her mother's heart attack. Can this romance ever come right?
I loved how believable the issues were. The heart-wrenching stuff is interspersed with touches of humor and bits of McKinley family life. Looking forward to the next book!
I'm such a fan of unrequited love that become reciprocated! Daniel and Jade's relationship definitely goes on a journey over time and becomes stronger as he remains steadfast through all her life's trials. Jade has been through some pretty tough things, and I admired her determination to move forward. I didn't always agree with her methods but the author made it easy for the reader to at least understand and sympathize with her. Emotional and inspiring!

I finished reading this book a week ago, but I wanted to wait to write the review. Why? Because I was afraid I would gush too much if I wrote the review right away. Well, I think I'm still going to gush, even with a week's perspective ...
Dancing with Fireflies is the second (sort of third, as there's a novella about secondary characters) installment in Denise Hunter's Chapel Springs series. It's the story of Jade, the McKinley family free spirit, and Daniel, Chapel Springs mayor and honorary McKinley. These two characters are incredibly likable, and I actually thought at one point as I was reading, "Lord, I need a Daniel."
As I got close to the end, I actually contemplated putting the book down for a while ... simply because I wasn't ready for the story to end! I have always enjoyed Denise Hunter's novels, but the more recent ones haven't captivated me as much as The Convenient Groom, the first Hunter novel I read. That book set the bar high—and I'm happy to report that Dancing with Fireflies is just as good as, if not better than, The Convenient Groom. That's high praise, let me tell you!
I read a lot of books (obviously). Most of the books I read, I enjoy. But rarely do I encounter a book that keeps me from realizing that it's time for dinner ... or for a favorite TV show. And that's exactly what Dancing with Fireflies did—it sucked me into its world and held on until I'd read the last page. It's a book I could see myself rereading (which I very rarely do). It's a book I'll highly recommend whenever a "real life" friend asks if I've read any good books lately. It's a book that will undoubtedly make my yearly "Top 10" list. It's a book I'm glad I had the opportunity to read.
Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from Litfuse Publicity Group. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.
As I read this book, I had a lot of thoughts about the story and most of them were negative. The heroine, for being even a marginal Christian, wanted to deceive her friends and family entirely too much for my taste. I also wondered why she didn't . It just allowed for others to get hurt too! She also couldn't move on from her losses in the past and it impacted what got her in the situation in the first place as well as the potential relationships she wanted to cultivate when she returned to Chapel Springs. Jade was a very weak heroine in my eyes, because she wouldn't even speak up for herself at times, and then copped out and wound up hurting her closest friend, just because she couldn't handle the results her decisions created. Daniel's agreement to all this also made him weak in my eyes, because he wanted Jade any way he could get her and was willing to settle for a relationship not based on love. While it was mildly interesting, I don't think I'd buy it at full price, and may wind up not owning the book at all.
Such a wonderful story! The start of this book blew me out of the water and I so wanted to talk with someone - anyone - to discuss this book! I was practically traumatized by how this book started and then it just kept getting better. Enduring love is the theme of this book and it was so very well written! This book held my attention from start to finish and I had a really hard time putting it down.
Holy hot sauce, Batman! This book is definitely not for the faint of heart—in the best way possible! Denise Hunter lights up every page of this romance with sparks, chemistry, and two people’s intense longing for faith and love. From the agonizing drama of the opening scene in Chicago to the steamy embrace in the final snowy scene, this novel is pedal-to-the-metal every step of the way. A beautifully written, poignant story of hope in the midst of life’s darkest moments, well-blended with the heart-pounding, breathless discovery of the ultimate love of a lifetime.
I really enjoyed this book! I laughed... and I'll admit I got a bit teary-eyed a couple times too. From the very beginning I just didn't want to put the book down until I reached the end -- and a very satisfying ending it was too! Can't wait to read the next book in the series!
There are some more mature topics so I wouldn't recommend this book for younger readers. And there is also more sensuality than I prefer, which is why I only gave it 4 stars instead of 5.
I'm seriously reading the series backwards. I started with book 3. Then devoured book 4. Now finishing book 2. So since I already knew that Jade & Daniel would have a happily ever after, I was curious to find out how they arrived there. I've got to admit that I have loved the McKinnley family. I love how the siblings love each other. I really enjoyed this one.
Oh my goodness. Ok…this story…this story had me on an emotional rollercoaster! I really liked it— It’s very well-written/entertaining and totally captivated me. I really appreciate good dialogue and communication between characters, and Denise Hunter does a phenomenal job at that; capturing all different fun/realistic conversations between all the characters. The only thing I had a hard time with was … …But regardless of things that gave me pause, I’m actually hooked on the McKinley family! I need more fun conversations, romantic stories mixed with lightheartedness and a touch of drama. On to the next to hear how PJ’s doing!
Oh my, this was truly a fantastic book. For me, it was different because it was a romance book that wasn’t overflowing with sexual descriptions and situations. The
The two main characters, Jade & Daniel carry the story, and they’re very well-developed and crafted by the author.
The story unfolded very quickly, and was easy to follow. Plus, plot twists make for a delightful and inspirational journey.
I highly recommend this book. It’s one of the best I’ve read so far this year!
Title: DANCING WITH FIREFLIES Author: Denise Hunter Publisher: Thomas Nelson March 2014 ISBN: 978-1401687021 Genre: Contemporary romance
Jade returns home to Chapel Springs after years of protecting her fragile heart. Then along comes Daniel, making her long to dance again.
Creative and complicated, Jade McKinley felt like a weed in a rose garden growing up in Chapel Springs. When she left, she thought she’d never look back. But now, pregnant, alone, and broke, she has no other choice but to return.
The mayor of Chapel Springs, Daniel Dawson, has been an honorary member of the McKinley family for years. While his own home life was almost non-existent, Daniel fit right into the boisterous McKinley family. He’s loved Jade for years, but she always saw him as a big brother. As Jade attempts to settle in, nothing feels right. God seems far away, she’s hiding secrets from her family, and she’s strangely attracted to the man who’s always called her “squirt." Finding her way home may prove more difficult than she imagined.
DANCING WITH FIREFLIES is the second book in the Chapel Springs Romance series, but it easily stands alone. Fans will want to read book one, Barefoot Summer to learn the story of Jade’s sister, and what caused Jade to run away, but if you don’t read it first, you won’t be lost.
This book does start with a rape, but it doesn’t go into details. Jade does suffer some flashbacks as a result which are more detail, but still not overly much. Understandably, Jade is numb as a result, especially when she discovers she’s pregnant, and the book shows/reads with the numbness for awhile.
I wondered if DANCING WITH FIREFLIES would be up to what I’m used to and love by Denise Hunter, but about midway through the book the story picks up. Daniel is a sweetheart, despite his circumstances, and Jade is only looking out after herself, due to her circumstances, but the faith message is good.
If you like contemporary romances you won’t want to miss DANCING WITH FIREFLIES. Denise Hunter is one of my favorite contemporary romance authors and she doesn’t disappoint. I am torn whether to give this book 4.5 or 5 stars. . . so I’m going to go with 5, and if I decide on 4.5, we’ll consider it rounded up…
Discussion questions and a preview of December Bride (also by Denise Hunter and highly recommended by me) are included at the back of the book. $15.99. 352 pages.
Dancing With Fireflies is the second book in the Chapel Spring series and another great story. Contemporary Romance is not a genre I gravitate towards; but, I've read several great ones - including this latest from Denise Hunter.
From the first couple pages my attention was snagged and from then on I didn't want to stop reading - it was just SO good! Something major happens in the prologue of Dancing With Fireflies that made me feel for Jade and, as the story continued, I couldn't help but start to feel for Daniel, too. He seemed like such a great guy, in spite of the things that slightly frustrated me (they just made him human and not so perfect). ;)
I want to talk more about the story, but I can't think of how to do that without giving away a main plot point. So, I'll stop by saying that I loved this book. At times some of the romance was a little much, but it was still a really great story. I recommend Dancing With Fireflies to fans of this genre.

4.5 stars Awww what a sweet book. My favourite in the series so far! The story touched on a tough topic but I thought the author handled it very well. Loved the characters. Daniel was defintely swoon worthy! :) Enjoyed reading about characters from the last book too. Once I started this book I could not put it down.Definitely one of the best romances I have read this year. (Meant to be Mine still has my top spot) Off to order the next book from the library! :)
Denise Hunter never disappoints. Once again, she's written a sizzling romance full of challenges and characters so real you never want to leave them. The issues in this story are real, raw, and beautifully executed. I can't wait for her next book!
I enjoyed Dancing with Fireflies by Denise Hunter. The characters were very memorable and the story really grabbed my heart. I so wanted Jade and Daniel to both find the love they were seeking. I've read and enjoyed many books by Denise Hunter, and this is a keeper.
Oh my word! Where do I even begin!? First of all this book was amazing. I loved everything about it. Second of all the McKinley family is the best. Third of all Daniel is the best. Fourth of all Jade and Daniel together is the cutest! I’m so excited to read PJ’s book. I highly recommend this book.
Please note: In an effort to discuss this novel and why I have these opinions, I will be revealing a plot twist that isn’t discussed in the plot summary though this twist is revealed in the first chapter.
Controversial or sensitive subjects are hard to get right in any forum. Particularly so in novels since no matter how hard a writer strives, it’s always a challenge to makes a point without benefit of tonal expression. Denise Hunter tackles what is likely to be a tough subject.
STORY: McKinley sister Jade is a free-spirit, which leads her to leave behind her cozy home of Chapel Springs Indiana; she heads to Chicago where she hopes her music career would be jump-started. Instead, she returns home broken, with no money and a baby on the way. Afraid of what her family will think, Jade first sees her friend Daniel Dawson who is more “adopted” brother than friend to the McKinley family. He's also the man who strangely has always been the kind of constant in Jade’s life she doesn’t fully understand. When their pasts collide, both Jade and Daniel will have to confront the secrets they aren’t sharing before either of them can find their future.
Dancing with Fireflies, by Denise Hunter | Book Review
Teasers don't tell us what goes on in city Jade’s life, but there's a mistake that goes on to change her life. One that she makes having fallen away from Christ. Little did I realize the child would be as a result of an emotional story that will tug on your heartstrings. None of the summaries tell the reader that Jade’s pregnancy is as the result of rape. Such a subject is probably going to be a sensitive one for some readers. For the most part, this novel is good. I’d been anticipating Jade’s story for a while now and can say I’m thrilled to have finally been able to read it. Hunter never seems to take for granted Daniel or Jade's feelings, and in fact, it’s these that get the pair of them in the most trouble.
Jade’s emotional heartbreak isn’t as somber or emotionally impressing as one would assume such an experience might inspire. What fallout there is, the authors deals with very well and I never doubt Jade feels everything at times. Daniel falls easily back into his role of comforter, worrier and friend which is both sweet and frustrating, and this leads to something I don't like. The ARC text puts too much emphasis on the physical love between these two, and it's a stretch simply for the subject matter. I don’t mind “passion” however the entire relationship is buffed up as entirely physical. This I’m not going to root it on beyond the conciliatory emotion of “knowing” the pair belongs together. This I find true even understanding the differential between what happens to Jade and what her relationship is with Daniel.
That being said, make no mistake, Jade’s story is sweet in an emotional sort of way and naturally, this reader is as anxious as ever to revisit Chapel Springs. No matter what's next, whether it’s about PJ or Ryan, I know Denise Hunter will write a beautiful, inspirational novel of the best kind.
Sincere thanks to the publisher, Thomas Nelson for providing a complimentary ARC copy of this book for reviewing purposes.
Jade McKinley left her small hometown of Chapel Springs to pursue big dreams in the city. When something terrible happens, she packs everything and decides to return home. Meet Daniel Dawson, the guy who has been like a big brother to Jade since she can remember. As they grow closer and closer, he’s reminded of his strong feelings for Jade, but can she return them?
Let me just say, I don’t read a lot of contemporary romance books. I usually skip them over for suspense, action, dystopian, historical, etc. because sometimes they can be pretty boring. Dancing with Fireflies, however? Absolutely adorable! I loved the characters, the plot, the romance, the dialogue, and the CHARACTERS. Jade and Daniel were so cute and funny and I have to admit, I laughed out loud quite a few times. Jade’s family was adorable and I immediately fell in love with all of them! The story was so well balanced. It was serious and realistic, yet hopeful and romantic. Denise Hunter is a very talented author; she wove an inspirational tale of a woman learning to love again so well that it made me feel joy, sadness, and everything in between.
If you are looking for a book that makes you laugh, cry, or just plain happy, Dancing with Fireflies is it! It was inspirational, emotional, romantic, funny, and so very entertaining. I am very happy to add it to my bookshelf!
**I received this book from BookLook Bloggers in exchange for my honest review. All thoughts are entirely my own.
I started this series accidentally with Book 3, Wishing Season and loved it so much I had to go back and start from the beginning. This second book, I pretty much knew what I was in for ... some laugh out loud moments, sweet romance ... yet it was so much more. Some heavy topics were covered with grace and hope. I did laugh out loud, the romance was top notch... but I also threatened to throw the book at the wall if the author didn't "fix it" soon LOL But... but... then I couldn't finish this book that I couldn't put down til the last page. LOVE!
Denise Hunter has to be hands-down one of my favorite romance authors. Her writing style is simply amazing and I wish I could convey to you what it means to have an invitation to review any of her books. I am always thrilled when I see her name pop up on a book review invitation, because I don't even have to read the synopsis to decide whether I want to consider it for a review, I know it will be a winner!!!
I don't think there is one woman who hasn't had a romantic man from her past that she hasn't wished or wanted to know what would have happened if things worked out between them and they got the opportunity to see if things would work out, but then life happens and that never happens. This is just that kind of premise that leads off the second novel in her Chapel Springs Romance Series. Jade McKinley has found her way back home again to Chapel Springs after trying for a new adventure in Chicago. But when an innocent date with Nick, a man who frequented her diner lead to a date rape leaving her with an unexpected pregnancy. All she knows is that is where she needs to go to find the help she needs.
The one thing she didn't plan on was running into her childhood friend, Daniel Dawson, who is now the current mayor. But surprisingly he is the only one she can confide in. It seems like things begin to go from bad to worse when the job prospects look slim, her apartment never materializes and her mother suffers from a critical heart attack that renders trying to discuss things with her family on hold for quite a while. But how can you hide your impending pregnancy from the small town she lives in where quite everyone knows everything.
Even Daniel isn't immune to the rumors that begin to fly with his current prospects of running for congressman in Washington D.C. to hang out with a pregnant woman who isn't his wife. His uptight and conservative parents want Daniel to cut all ties with Jade otherwise he won't have much chance to win the election, even though the familiar romantic feelings he has had for Jade is coming on stronger than ever. If he can only convince Jade that he has feeling for her that go deeper than the brotherly ones she shares with him. Will love truly win a place in both their hearts?
I received Dancing with Fireflies by Denise Hunter compliments of Thomas Nelson Publishers and Litfuse Publicity for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation for a favorable review and the opinions are strictly my own. I am so addicted to the fictional town of Chapel Springs she has created as well as the small town feel you gain from the people that they interact with. But it is that spark that Daniel has always had for Jade that he never acted upon that wonders if their might be a chance to make something of it when she comes home. Only he never expected things to be quite so complicated with her. But will he be able to overcome his feelings when he learns the circumstances surrounding just how Jade wound up pregnant? You'll have to pick this one up to find out. Now on pins and needles to see just where the third novel will wind up but sooooo looking forward to it! Hands down it gains my Ahhh! romance factor and easily gets a 5 out of 5 stars!
Denise Hunter is one of my all time favorite authors. She knows how to write authentic, inspiring characters and stories that touch your heart and stay with you long after you close the book.
That being said, Dancing with Fireflies is not one of my favorites. Daniel and Jade have a very, very sweet romance. However they were both so introverted that I had a hard time relating to them and it felt like it took them forever to get over themselves and finally say what needed to be said. I personally would have preferred both of them have a little bit more backbone. I also would have liked to have seen them rely on God a bit more. In contrast to Barefoot Summer, where I thought the characters both experienced a heartfelt and authentic spiritual journey and healing, in Dancing with Fireflies, the characters spirituality kind of felt like a tacked on afterthought.
I also had an issue with the way the rape was handled. Or rather, not handled in this book. I feel like that’s something that would have been very very traumatic to Jade, not to mention the pregnancy on top of that. And I don’t feel like that was adequately dealt with in the novel. I found it kind of odd that the loss of Jade’s old boyfriend from years back played a more significant role than dealing with unexpectedly becoming a parent after an attack. I also didn’t like the way the attacker was brushed off as unimportant. He should know he has children in the world. He should have to pay child support and he should pay for his crime. He should NOT be walking around free and without consequences, likely using the same methods on other unsuspecting women. The way everyone treated that as something that was just Jade’s personal preference and no one else’s business really bothered me.
Overall, although it wasn’t my favorite, the book was interesting, entertaining and thought provoking. Ms. Hunter’s writing style is engaging and compulsively readable. I enjoyed the first installment immensely and will definitely be continuing with this series. I can appreciate that with the diversity in the characters and the world Ms. Hunter has created I will relate to some of them more readily than others. I would definitely still recommend this book.
