This is a great resource for anyone interested in gifted identification, and the options for designing and implementing gifted programs. The focus of the book is on creating inclusive program options by examining the mismatch between student academic need and the current program offerings as the primary indicator for the need for gifted services. Two chapters are devoted to the topic of gifted identification and not only are instruments discussed, but the scores and uses for the scores are explained mathematically in terms that are easy to understand. Once the need for gifted education has been established, the authors discuss various programming options including acceleration, enrichment, and cluster grouping. Some common pitfalls in identification are also addressed. Overall, this is an informative, thought-provoking resource that provides a framework for indentifying and serving gifted learners.
Beyond Gifted Education Designing and Implementing Advanced Academic Programs by Scott Peters, Michael Matthews, Matthew McBee and Betsy McCoach I was interested in this book mostly for the welfare of my grandson's education as he's been placed in a specialized classroom just recently. I was so glad to read that not only do you go by the test results but don't rely on them specifically for placement of the child in a gifted classroom. People can determine if the child needs to be there without test scores. The references, resources found in this book are superior to the subject and I found the book easy to follow along. It starts with having a plan and not only sticking to it but modifying it for each child. I received this book from Library Thing in exchange for my honest review.
This is a book that would be good for education professionals who are looking to develop and implement programs for gifted children. The book itself is mostly suited to Americans as most of the test materials are US-centric.
