ESP. Divination. Psychometry. Telekinesis. Astral vision. You've heard of all these talents. The amazing truth is that you can have all of these abilities when you practice the simple, but powerfully effective, exercises in Melita Denning and Osborne Phillips' "Practical Guide to Psychic Powers." World-famous experts Denning and Phillips explain exactly what you need to develop your own innate abilities, including advice on diet, rest, and exercise. They advise you to meditate daily, and give instructions how you can bring this wonderful skill into your life. They also reveal how you can make your own tools for psychic development, such as a pendulum, ESP cards, and a Vision Mirror. "Practical Guide to Psychic Powers" explains that your attitude is important in establishing these abilities in your life. You'll discover how to eliminate boredom and stress, practice mental concentration for long periods, and have foreknowledge of the future. Many of the exercises to help you to develop psychic abilities are in the form of games, making them fun, preventing boredom, and creating faster success. For example, you'll learn a game of guessing dice, one with ESP cards, and another that uses the vision mirror to predict your future. The book teaches you how to become aware of the impressions a material object has gathered, the art of psychometry. You'll learn about contacting spiritual entities the way Spiritualists do. You'll also discover the secrets of dowsing and how to develop and use this ability. Denning and Phillips are known for their clarity of thought and for having effective techniques, as demonstrated in "Practical Guide to Psychic Powers." Get your copy today.
Reading “Practical Guide to Psychic Powers: Awaken Your Sixth Sense” written by Osborne Phillips and Melita Denning was interesting. The way that the Table of Contents is written reminds me of 19th century books where the entire chapter is condensed.
This book provides a lot of information on pendulums, scrying mirrors, dowsing, seances, and Zener cards, although the authors simply call them ESP cards. What I like about this book is that it focuses on what is called the Tabor Formulation, which is basically a deep breathing and meditative exercise. The authors provide a variety of different tests and games so that people can track their progress. I am psychic, so I haven’t really dabbled with divination. In fact, I was always of the opinion that either you’re psychic or you’re not, and I still believe that to some degree. However, I do recognize that some people experience psychic occurrences at times (hunches, dreams, and etc).
What I don’t like is how the authors focused so heavily on scientific tests. For example, they included info on Rudi Schneider and how he was “outed” and discussed several Soviet psychic investigators, but instead of discussing them completely, the authors left out some important information, including pseudoscience (particularly in Soviet Russia in the 1930s and the famine that it caused).
Part of the issue is that many people—including psychic people, people doing divination, and even some scientists themselves—fail to realize that some things are outside the purview of the hard sciences, namely religion and psychic phenomena. For example, if someone states with absolute conviction that a single God exists, you can’t reasonably conduct an experiment on a belief system—it can’t be measured with the scientific method. Many people continue to try to test psychic phenomena, and although we continue to be observed, measured, and others conduct experiments on us, the “why” and “how” questions will never be answered. But, more importantly, the experiments can rarely, if ever, be retested, and retesting is key. Knowing this, I was able to tell many of my colleagues who were cultural anthropologists and linguistic anthropologists that I was psychic, while I rarely discussed it with my harder-science colleagues who were biological anthropologists and archaeologists.
Although this book is definitely dated, it’s a good reference tool. I particularly liked the chapter on dowsing. I live rurally and many of the old timers (my grandparents generation) used dowsing regularly to dig wells (they also planted crops astrologically!)
There's some valuable information in this book for awakening or strengthening your psychic abilities. A quick read. I was surprised as I didn't like Melita Denning's other book about psychic self-defense too much.
