I was born in the normal way in 1971, and vaguely remember half-pennies and sixpences. I have written for as long as I can remember: poetry, short stories and novels. It’s what I always wanted to do and read English at London University with writing in mind. I taught English for seven years and was Head of English at St. Gregory’s RC High School in London by the end of that period. I have enormous respect for those who still labour at the chalk-face. In truth, I can’t find it in me to miss the grind of paperwork and initiatives. I do miss the camaraderie of the smokers’ room, as well as the lessons where their faces lit up as they understood what I was wittering on about.

My mother is Irish and from an early age she told me history as an exciting series of stories – with dates. My great-grandfather was a Seannachie, so I suppose story-telling is in the genes somewhere. My father flew in Bomber Command in WWII, then taught maths and science. Perhaps crucially, he also loved poetry and cracking good tales. Though it seems a dated idea now, I began teaching when boys were told only girls were good at English, despite the great names that must spring to mind after that statement. My father loved working with wood and equations, but he also recited ‘Vitai Lampada’ with a gleam in his eye and that matters, frankly.

I’ve always loved historical fiction as a genre and cut my teeth on Hornblower and Tai-Pan, Flashman, Sharpe and Jack Aubrey. I still remember the sheer joy of reading my first Patrick O’Brian book and discovering there were nineteen more in the series. I love just about anything by David Gemmell, or Peter F. Hamilton or Wilbur Smith. I suppose the one thing that links all those is the love of a good tale.

That’s about it for the moment. If you’d like to get in touch with me leave a comment in the forum or you can tweet me @Conn_Iggulden. I’ll leave it there for the moment. If you’ve read my books, you know an awful lot about the way I think already. There’s no point overdoing it.

In a word, unputdownable! (If it is not a word then it should be.)

These books are excellent. Vivid, intriguing, exciting, at times horrifically violent, they take you on a journey alongside one of history's most daring, ruthlessly efficient leaders. They show you the whole man, not just the infamous character he became historically. Iggulden's knowledge is superb and the picture he paints of Genghis Kahn's life and surroundings is sharp, clear and vibrant. I read these books over two years ago now and I still think about them and talk about them to other keen readers, and I have recommended them by word of mouth on numerous occasions.

This reminds me of a real life Game of Thrones, minus the magic and mythical creatures. In fact I often wonder if GoT borrowed certain real events because some of the things that actually happened to or because of Genghis Kahn - and certainly particular punishments and rulings he dished out - are mirrored in that series. No matter, I just think it is an interesting parallel and am not suggesting for a minute that there is anything wrong with it.

If you like your history with more than a dash of excitement and a little violence does not put you off, then I whole-heartedly recommend this series. These are among some of my favourite books to grace my shelves and I have no doubt that I will one day return to them and read them all over again. Excellent!

Well written, educational, emotive, shocking and yet a page turner. An historical fiction must for those who like a conquering, sword in hand action packed series. Live through the eyes of Genghis Chan.

My brother passed on the first of the series sometime back but then i was into Alex Rutherford's Mughal series and didn't want to get into another historical fiction so soon. The end of December saw a flurry of quick reads and my cache of books were soon over. Lost and soon sulking with nothing to read, I found the Wolf of the Plains lying around and started on it.

Well like a wolf I found myself tearing into it and each book followed the other like the Mongol army sweeping from one end of Asia right upto Budapest. Scent of horse dung mingle with airag, whoosh of arrows and clash of swords enter my mind as I work. It has been quite a journey and it took a little less than two weeks for me to complete the 4 book series.

Chengiz Khan, Kublai Khan and Tamrlane are names that have resounded through history but with this series Tsubodai, Kaichun, Jelme, Arslan, Jochi, Chagatai come into their own. It wasn't a vast horde of warriors breaking down enemies but brilliant tactics along with adapting to new ways of fighting as they faced armies bigger than them like the Chinese, Arab and Hungarian. Mongke, Hulagu and the Golden Horde were also snippets in the Middle East narrative but reading the books you realize the enormity of the snippets as Muslim cities fell one after the other.

Ending a series brings with it both satisfaction and discontent as it is an end of the journey. Luckily I found a fifth book Conqueror and I am now happily half way into it.

Iggulden's taking on what was one or I´d dare say the most interesting conqueror in history and his legacy.

This masterpiece came to me through a suggestion that appeared in the end of a Bernard Cornwell's book, and after reading the prologue and a few opinions I was bound to see what this was about.
Truth be told, I had from not much to no knowledge of Genghis' biggest deeds before reading these novels, and I was not disappointed! Iggulden brings us to a fresh enviroment in historical fictions, inviting the reader into the early life of Genghis until his passing and moving further to his descendants. The pace is set with mastery and his writing craft is well proven in the character development and specially battle descriptions, one can truly feel part of the story and surrounded by the cold plains of the ocident, while thrilling into dangerous and tense moments, followed by pages of contemplation and simplicity, true passion for one's people and the rise of a nation that is shown to cause many great changes to history

Very good book on Kublai Khan and his rise to power and prominence. Maybe a bit too much of the 'Noble Warrior' for such a pack of blood-drinking hilly billy vandals that the Mongel's flash-in-the-pan era was. Looks more like they giggled themselves silly at every ransack and massacre that they committed. Kublai Khan is show as the one of the many aspiring Khans who had to address the issue of governing responsibly rather than screwing his terrified subjects to death.

A very good description of the life of Genghis Khan, one of the greatest conquerors of all-time, and some of his successors, as well as about the birth of the great Mongolian empire. This is a must-read for all, not only for history lovers.

Raw and evocative, Iggulden's Conqueror Series is brawny, masculine and driven. Set to a broad sweep of history, the characterisation might be a little thin, but it's wholly appropriate to the moodiness of the books.

Enormously interesting series. A good view in to a world incredibly different from our one with views on war and "survival of the fittest" that explains why he became such a terrifying tyrant!
