A great book to use to compare human interactions to those of animals. It really helped my students to think about the differences between humans and animals, and how some of the ways animals and humans say hello are similar (ie: monkeys touching hands, beavers touching noses). It gave my students a chance to act out some of the animal actions (good for kinesthetic learners) and to try out some of the different methods for saying, "hello." This book was a great hit with my kindergarten students!

Can't wait to try this one out in storytime...I am combining it with Anthony Browne's "Little Beauty" and Francine Patterson's "Koko's Kitten" for a preschool "animal talk" storytime. We'll be learning a little sign language and talking about talking and how it boosts vocabulary.

"Hello, Hello!" by Miriam Schlein is a beautiful book which explains the different ways animals say hello to each other. It in an informative read and explains how seven different animals greet each other. Zebras say hello by stretching out their necks, then they sniff each other's noses, and finally they make little chewing movements. Elephants touch trunk tips or they twine their trunks together. I learned that lions say hello by rubbing their foreheads together. I liked how at the end of the book the author asked the reader how they say hello. Some people say hello with a smile, a wave, a shake of the hand, a hug, or a kiss. This is a fantastic book and it can help children compare greetings of humans and animals and it can also give them a chance to think about how they say hello.

This is absolutely one of the best books to read aloud to children! I have read it to kindergarten classes numerous times, to their great delight. On each page, the children learn how an animal says hello in its special (zebra, chimpanzee, elephant, wolf, beaver, etc,) way. You can let the students pause between each page to try out that animal's distinct way (with a few exceptions - we can't kiss in school!) The illustrations are spot on cute, too!

This is part of our curriculum for PreK and I think it's a great book to show ways that we different than animals and yet all same the desire to greet our peers and kin. Best for my 4-5, but good for the 3-4 group too.

Cute idea, but I'm not a fan of the execution. I find the illustrations weird and a bit creepy, and the descriptions overly wordy/complex for such a simple story.

Hello, Hello! is a nonfiction picture book which describes how different animals greet each other when they meet in the wild. Elephants, for example, are "very, very, very, very friendly," and say hello by putting the tips of their trunks in one another's mouths!

This is one of the best nonfiction books I've found for preschoolers. It reads like a storybook and contains clear, accurate, but not extraneous information. It worked amazingly in my "Say Hello" storytime, although you could use it for a variety of themes.

Would make a great nonfiction companion to books about animals, talking/communication, animal sounds. Lots of opportunity to promote interactive participation with the book-- it would be easy to have kids do some of the actions, make the sounds the animals would make, or ask questions throughout the reading.

A fun way to introduce a wide variety of animals. I think this book can span a fairly wide range. We talk a lot about greetings in my younger storytimes and the repetition works well. Plus, for a Pre-K set, you could definitely act out some of the animal greetings. A lovely read aloud all around.
