Let me start this review by saying I am a cultured kitty and I do not read books at random. Most of the stuff my caretaker Megan reads just does not interest me in the least, although I did find ANIMAL FARM to be most intriguing. Megan asked me to read SEX AND THE KITTY by Nancy the Cat as a favor. I owe her a few favors after the money she spends on me so of course I said yes, after several hours of relenting and ignoring her offerings of kitty treats. I was just hungry and milking her for all she was worth.

Nancy the Cat starts her story with her birth and how she came to be taken in by her family. I could not really identify with this, mostly because my mother was feral and lived in the basement of a condemned house in Newark, New Jersey. She kicked me out of the nest and when I was four months old I wound up in the right driveway at the right time. I’ve since moved to North Carolina and turned into a classy cultured southern kitty. I sleep with a picture of Zachary Quinto and have a closet full of clothing. I spend my days lounging around my house and playing with my best friend New Kitty (yes, such an unfortunate name). Sadly, in North Carolina, I do not have many friends.

Nancy’s story is one that humored me for three days of fun. Her shenanigans were very much unlike mine, but her story is one I wish I could live. My owner went to London in January and brought me back English cat treats and they were most tempting. I wish I could be a cat model and act and meet more cats than my two stepsiblings and that cat that sent me to the vet when he attacked me. I did nothing to him! Honestly!

While the story appears inane, it’s actually quite fun. *clean clean clean yawn* I stayed up late and kept reading when I should have gone to bed. I read when the power went out thanks to Irene since Megan wouldn’t let me go outside. I even read after my bath even though I wanted to yowl and get a warm blow dry. Nancy’s story is fun and adventurous, even though it’s outlandish. She is so right about birds and dogs and chickens. I’ve killed a large number of fowl in my life, and don’t get me started on dogs.

Anyway, for my feline friends and the human readers of this blog, SEX AND THE KITTY might be up your alley if you are a fan of Sex and the City. Lolcats? No. I don’t see that at all. Besides, Lolcats aren’t even funny.

MEGAN’S VERDICT: Although the story is farfetched and for humor, Nancy’s story is entertaining and cute. For cat-lovers who enjoyed Sex in the City, it is a great book and makes you think about what your cats are up to a lot more closely.

Nancy the Cat chronicles her life from a small kitten with her mother to living with her owners and the "little people" to her adventures hitching rides and finding fame.

I adored this book to pieces. I happen to own a little black kitty of my own (Emma, in case you were curious), and I couldn't help but be charmed by Nancy.

I was impressed with Nancy's writing. Her writing is very nice and clean, and it is obvious she is gifted in this area. I loved how witty she could be, and her writing was exactly how I imagine Emma and other cats to speak.

The story is cute and charming. I loved reading about Nancy's life, her insight into birds (positively hilarious!), and most definitely her adventures in finding fame. Although I will admit, I found it strange how few people in the memoir appeared surprised that Nancy was writing a blog and such. If my cat, Emma, suddenly made up her own blog and Facebook page, I would be a little surprised and would probably want to sit down and talk with her (though, knowing cats, that might be a bit challenging--they are very opinionated and all!).

Nancy paints the other characters in the book well. I was particularly touched at the Nancy/Murphy subplot (Note to Nancy: Don't be surprised when shipping fanfiction appears!). It's a subplot we've seen a bajillion times, but Nancy writes it so well, so honestly, so realistically that I didn't roll my eyes and groan. Instead, I had to blink back tears, it was so charming.

If there is any other complaint, it would be: it's too short! I want more Nancy! Hopefully, she will be following this meowmoir up in a few years with another one.

I had so much fun reading about Nancy's life and am glad she shared a piece of herself with me. I wish her luck and encourage all cat lovers out there to take a peek at her debut meowmoir. It's purr-fect.

I randomly picked this book up off of Netgalley and I was happy that I did. This was another book that I read on vacation. I loved how quirky and how different the story was. It's a lot of fun. Nancy is a small black cat who goes on a lot of big adventures. It took me a little bit of time to get used to the idea that I was reading a book told from the point of view of a cat. I know that it sounds a little odd but give it a chance.

Like I mentioned, this book is written from the point of view of a cat. It sounds like a premise that could possibly not work that well. Luckily in this case, the premise definitely works. The way that the book is written makes it seem not so weird that a cat is telling you her life story.

This book is very funny and had a lot of laugh out loud moments. This is definitely a lot different than my usual book fare but in a strange way, it sort of fit in to my taste. Nancy is a fun narrator. If you're looking for a fun read with a lot of humor. Definitely take a look at this book!

Meinung:

Als ich die Inhaltsbeschreibung zu „Sex and the kitty“ gelesen habe, wurde ich neugierig auf das Buch. Ich bin zwar kein „Sex and the City“-Fan, aber ich mag Katzen und habe auch selbst welche. Zum Glück haben meine Katzen jedoch – soweit ich weiß – keinerlei Starambitionen, wofür ich nach der Lektüre von „Sex and the kitty“ wirklich dankbar bin. Nancy, die feline Protagonistin und ich-Erzählerin des Romans, ist nämlich in erster Linie anstrengend und stellenweise auch nervig und überheblich. Vor allem ihre Überheblichkeit wird bereits in der Einleitung deutlich. Diese soll sicherlich selbstbewusst klingen, wirkte auf mich jedoch einfach nur unsympathisch und von dem im Klappentext angesprochenen Charme ist auch nichts zu spüren. Nachdem ich die Einleitung gelesen habe, ist mir erst Mal jegliche Lust auf das Buch vergangen und ich habe ein anderes Buch gelesen.

Da man ein Buch jedoch schlecht nur an Hand der Einleitung beurteilen kann, habe ich es doch wieder zur Hand genommen und auch relativ schnell durchgelesen. Das Buch erzählt zwei Geschichten. Zum einen ist da die Geschichte einer Katze, Nancy, welche bloggt, auf Facebook aktiv ist und berühmt werden möchte. Und als hätte Nancy nicht schon genug damit zu tun, berühmt zu werden, muss sie sich auch noch mit den ganz normalen Problemen einer normalen Katze rumschlagen. Als Leser begleitet man Nancy während verschiedener Stationen im Leben einer Katze – die Trennung von der Mutter, ein neues zu Hause, ein neues Revier, Konkurrenzkämpfe mit anderen Katzen, der erste Besuch beim Tierarzt und so weiter. Auf eine katzenhafte Art ist hier nun auch der angekündigte Charme zu spüren, jedoch auf eine Art, wie wohl nur eine Katze charmant sein kann. Wäre Nancy nämlich eine menschliche Protagonistin, würde ich sie nervig, naiv und egoistisch finden.

Betrachtet man die Geschichte jedoch nicht als Erzählung aus dem Leben einer Katze, sondern als Fabel, so hat sie wesentlich mehr zu bieten, als nur Nancys Alltag. Und schiebt man mal auf Seite, dass Nancy eine Katze ist, könnte „Sex and the kitty“ auch die Geschichte eines jungen Menschen erzählen, welcher alles versucht um berühmt zu werden und dabei an verschiedenen Castings teilnimmt und bei nicht ganz seriösen Modelagenturen einen Vertrag unterschreibt. Nebenbei warnt die Geschichte auch noch vor übermäßiger Verführung durch Werbung sowie den Gefahren des Internets.

Mit den nun bereits angesprochenen Punkten, hätte das Buch eigentlich schon genügend Inhalt. Nancy, bzw. die Ghostwriterin, konnte es jedoch nicht lassen, das ganze Buch mit Seitenhieben auf Katzenbücher, Katzenblogs und andere Katzenbesitzer zu spicken. Einige dieser Seitenhiebe haben mich dabei zum schmunzeln gebracht, andere fand ich jedoch einfach nur unnötig. Insgesamt wirkte dies auf mich so, als würde hier irgendein Zickenkrieg ausgefochten.

Fazit:

Die Grundidee, welche dem Roman zugrunde liegt, gefällt mir. Mir gefällt auch, wie die Autorin diese Idee umgesetzt hat, indem sie sowohl eine Katzen-Geschichte , als auch eine Fabel geschrieben hat und sich dabei auf aktuelle Themen bezogen hat. Nancy als Protagonistin und ich-Erzählerin der Geschichte konnte mich jedoch nicht überzeugen. Ich bin einfach nicht warm mit ihr geworden, sie blieb mir fremd und ich fand sie unsympathisch – darunter hat dann auch das Lesevergnügen gelitten.

Mit gerade mal zwei Jahren möchte Nancy, eine kleine und schwarze Katze, ihre Memoiren veröffentlichen. Für eine Katze wie Nancy ist dass nicht zu früh, denn sie hat schon eine Menge Abenteuer erlebt. Kaum dass sie bei ihren Besitzern eingezogen ist. Schließlich weiß sie ganz genau, was sie will - berühmt werden und ins Showbiz kommen. So einfach, wie sich eine junge, aufstrebende Katze dass vorstellt, ist dass jedoch nicht. Welche Stolpersteine werden sich ihr den Weg legen was werden ihre Freunde von ihr denkne, werden sie noch zu ihr halten? Und was ist mit ihren Besitzern?

Aus Nancys Perspektive ist das Buch geschrieben. Sie ist eine ungewöhnliche Katze und Britin. Eine Katze, die auf facebook postet, einen eigenen Blog betreibt und Ambitionen hegt berühmt zu werden und im Showbiz ganz groß raus zu kommen. Wann hat man schon mal von so einem Tier gehört? Nancy ist so eine Katze und läßt den Leser an den zwei Jahren ihres bisherigen Lebens und den Erfahrungen teilhaben. In kurzen Kapiteln, die mit abgeänderten Zitaten am Anfang begonnen werden, erzählt sie von ihren Abenteuern. Diese sind dabei so unglaublich, dass sie schon wieder wahr sein könnten.

Wenn man selbst eine Katze besitzt, erkennt man einiges in Nancys Verhalten wieder. Aber auch alle anderen werden wunderbar und herrlich von Nancy unterhalten, die sich naiv in ihre Abenteuer stürzt und erkennen muß, dass alles nicht so leicht ist, wie es aussieht. Sie wächst in der kurzen Zeit auch über sich hinaus und gewinnt einige Erkentnisse und Erfahrungen. Manche Eigenschaften von Nancy sind sehr vermenschlicht und ungewöhnlich für eine Katze, so denke ich nicht, das sie Fahrpläne oder Uhren lesen können, doch auf andere Weise sicher wirklich ihren Weg finden können, um bei Theaterstücken mitzuwirken.

Das Cover ist in schwarz und pink gehalten, was zu Nancy, der Katzendiva, passt. Der Titel ist ein wenig eine Anspielung auf Sex and the City, und teilweise verhält sich Nancy auch etwas wie in einem Chick-lit Roman. Vor allem wenn sie von einem gewissen Kater aus der Werbung träumt, der für sie wohl ihr Mister Big ist.

Der im Buch erwähnte Blog, sowhl auch die Facebook Fanpage existieren wirklich. Jedoch hat Nancy sich ein wenig zurückgezogen aus dem glamurösen Leben einer bekannten Katze, da beide Seiten momentan zu ruhen scheinen. Auch eine Diva braucht ihre ruhigeren Tage.

Die Zeit während des Lesens verfliegt im Nu und man beginnt sich zu fragen, was wird wohl Nancy in ihrem restlichen Katzenleben alles erleben und erfahren, wenn sie schon in den ersten zwei Jahren so viel unternommen hat. Durch Witz, Ironie und den Parallelen zu menschlichen Charakterzügen macht es sehr viel Spaß Nancys Memorien zu lesen. Doch sollte man nicht alles zu ernst nehmen, was man in diesem Buch liest, da vieles vermenschlicht wurde und somit Nancy einige Eigenschaften, Verhalten und Charakterzüge zeigt, die nicht unbedingt jeder in einer Katze wiederfinden würde.

Despite the fact Sex and the Kitty is billed as a ‘meowmoir’, I’m not necessarily sure how much of it is actually real, actually genuine. It’s obviously not all real – Cats don’t have thumbs ergo cats can’t use a computer(!). But it’s a fun and quick read and I must admit, despite the unbelievability of it all, I thoroughly enjoyed Nancy’s tale. It’s the kind of book where you can just kick back and read it and not worry about anything. You just get lost in the (sorry Nancy) Kittylicious tale. I mean, there has never been a better book about a cat. I’m generally a dog person, but I was very much taken in by Nancy’s tale to become a celebrity and I admired her panache. Not many people can pull off making their own team (Team Nancy!) without sounding conceited!

Sex and the Kitty took me a couple of days to read on my Kindle, but in reality it’s the kind of book that will merely take a couple of hours, coming in just short of 200 pages. I think anybody who loves cats will eat up Nancy’s tale, because it’s ridiculously cute. It made me laugh and it made me smile, and I definitely hope Nancy writes a sequel. She could totally write a fiction novel next, actually. I’d very much love to know who did write this, because whoever did really must love cats and really managed to make this a wonderful cat novel. I loved Nancy, I loved germ-phobic Brambles, loved all the cute cats that made up the book. You’ll not read a sweeter book this year, this is a purrfect (again, sorry) kitty meowmoir and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Nancy is an intelligent, articulate, cat. She writes an early autobiography, charting her life from early kittenhood, her first adventures into the world and her search for the perfect career in the limelight.

Nancy’s world is one where cats are able to do many things I’ve often suspected but never quite managed to prove. In her world, but for the lack of opposable thumbs, they’re right up there with humans.

The book is littered, no pun intended, with social references that frankly, a human couldn’t make without dealing with myriad publicists. Cats can be catty it would seem. The social commentary is brilliant. Types of cat very closely resemble types of people in their foibles and insecurities.

There are laugh-out-loud moments and many more snigger-to-oneself. I won’t quote a single one, because it won’t be as funny when you read it for yourself. Bought as a diversionary light read, I found this book quite enchanting. I’m awarding five stars because it doesn’t lapse into the unimaginative or unbelievable. Of course, by picking up the book you suspend disbelief, but this book successfully walks that fine line.

It was bound to happen…I read a book written by a cat. LOL Nancy the Cat has written her own memoir and what a riot it is!

Nancy isn’t like all the neighborhood cats. All her kitty friends are perfectly happy sitting at home and doing kitty stuff. Not Nancy. She yearns for adventure and fame. She signs up with a talent agent and learns all too fast that fame isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be.

Despite her own Facebook page and her own blog, Nancy craves more. She falls in love with a famous kitty heartthrob, but the old saying – be careful what you wish for – comes true for this kitty cat.

The title of this book is deceptive. There is no sex in this book. LOL Just a kitty cat wanting more out of life, just like the rest of us. There are so many cute scenes that will have readers laughing all the way through this one. It’s quick read and guaranteed to put cat lovers in a good mood.

When she gets signed by a celebrity agent it seems her dreams have come true. But will the glamour puss lifestyle be all she thought it is. Or will she miss teasing the birds, hunting for mice , roaming and sunbatheing all day. This is a memoir full of silliness wit and charm . It is set in England..

I never thought that I'd A) Read a book where the main protagonist is a cat and B) Love it.

Picture all of those feel-good chick-lit books that are popular. You know the ones. There is an ultimate goal and after a few bumps, the hero prevails. They aren't taxing to read, they don't have much substance but they are a nice read. Now picture these books set in the animal kingdom.

The best part about this was not that the narrative voice was likable, developed and consistent, or that the plot was so simple and yet brilliant, or, finally, that it was genuinely funny, but that it was so true to the natural behaviour of cats that you begin to suspect that they actually do talk to each other and throw secret parties while their owners are out!

Great read, very unique and I want more!

I won this book on First Reads. I started this book thinking that it was going to be one of those "weird" books that you just read to get through it. Well I was wrong! Because of my pre-assigned prejudices it took me a chapter to get 'into' the book, but once I did Holy Moly! It was hard to put it down! The author definitely knows how to write to keep the readers attention. I loved living vicariously through Nancy and thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I would most definitely recommend the book to fans of the "Sex and the City" series as well as cat lovers!

Thank you Good Reads for this advance copy!! However, this is just plain drivel. Not even fun drivel, at that. Writing about a cat in first person can be cute and endearing. Not in the case, however. When she orchestrates her New Year's Eve party, I was beginning to slip. When she started actually being involved with her own Facebook page, utilizing both keyboard and 'mouse', they lost me, I'm done. Goodbye awful book, bye bye!!

I really enjoy a good book about animals, but this book was just OK. Not quite funny, and didn't hold my interest as I expected. The writing stile was very basic even taken into account that the story is told by a cat.

This was a cute tale of a cat trying to rise towards stardom before realizing where she really belongs; home with those she loves.

The story was funny and whimsical and I found myself smiling throughout most of it. The writing was smooth and colloquial and quite easy to get into the story.

Perhaps it's because I'm a crazy cat lady at heart, but I really enjoyed this book about Nancy the Cat's pursuit of fame. You can see the lesson to be learned coming, but I enjoyed the journey to it. and I won't say more, but the theater scene is hilarious!
