Brigham Henry Roberts was a Mormon leader, historian, and politician who published a six-volume history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) and was denied a seat as a member of United States Congress because of his practice of plural marriage.
I enjoy B H Roberts for his detail and response to the truth behind the City Beautiful. The gravity of dishonesty and evil that were with apostates of the great restoration known to the world as the Church of Jesus Christ of latter day Saints, the Mormons!
This book isn't exactly an attention grabber from the beginning, but by the end it held my full attention. Roberts inserts his opinions into this non-fiction account of Nauvoo and at first it was annoying. But I came to value his opinions because they helped to make a more complete historical picture of what happened to the Latter-Day Saints while they were in Nauvoo. His book challenged some of my previous thoughts on church history and left me to ponder the events in a different light. I would highly recommend this book as an excellent church history resource.
Insightful book. I enjoyed the background knowledge and information regarding the start of the industrious city of Nauvoo and the causes of its fall. Fascinating quotes and tidbits.
I will say, that it seemed to focus too much on Joseph Smith (don't get me wrong--it was fascinating); but I couldn't help but think: Isn't this book supposed to be about Nauvoo? I would have liked more facts and info on the city itself.
This was an amazing book! I love church history and this book will be forever on my 'most favorite' list. Elder B. H. Roberts has a fluid way of reporting history. I love the fact that his organizing and length of chapters made this an easy read. I read it in 4 days by just picking it up between other activities. I learned so much and am grateful that I picked it up.
What a fascinating topic! I wish B.H. Roberts was more of a real historian. Along with the nuggets if fascinating history, there was a good deal of ranting and apologetics. I also really wanted to know more about the various LDS factions that split off at the time of the exodus from Nauvoo, but was left wanting.
I LIKED THE COMING TOGETHER OF THIS HISTORY THAN I DID OF SOME OF THE OTHER BOOKS I'VE READ. A SAD TIME. THE MORMONS TRULY WERE PERSECUTED, WHICH I'VE COME A GREATER UNDERSTANDING OF WITH READING THIS VERSION OF HISTORICAL EVENTS.
Better the second time around. I found some interesting facts that relate to my genealogical research.
Written nearly a hundred years ago with surprising accuracy by one of the LDS Church's greatest historians and writers B. H. Roberts. This is an excellent history of the Mormon city of Nauvoo which in 6 short years (1839-1846) became one of the largest cities in Illinois and western United States.
Takes of where the Missouri Persecutions ended and ends with the murder of Joseph Smith. It's more heavy on the scripture. The appendix contains letters of Joseph Smith written to presidential candidates, not that positive.
Finishing this book before the end of the year put me at over 20,000 pages in 2003. That was a huge deal to me then and made me think I could break 25,000 the next year. I'm yet to break 25K.
I still have a bit left but the history has been well written and I love to see how people will keep moving even when placed in difficult situations over and over.
