Shannon Hunter, an eco-terrorist member of the elusive Earth Liberation Front (E.L.F.) discovers real elves bent on more than petty sabotage...
Plunged into the a world teeming with magic she never really imagined to exist, Shannon discovers the terrible reality left to both Mankind and herself. The Elves have decreed - "Mankind stands upon its own terminus, heedless of ruin" - and its high time the real protectors of nature strike back.
The only person able to do anything to prevent a supernatural war mankind cannot hope to fight; Shannon must find a way to overcome her misanthropic ways, and prevent the Elves from making a mistake that threatens not only Mankind but all life on earth.

The contemporary fairy tale, "E.L.F." is set in a dystopian vein, somewhat akin to the Harry Bates' classic, "The Day the Earth Stood Still", only fantasy, not Sci-fi, and with far more epic action.

Let me start by saying that this book is for people who love very descriptive writers, and the writing was very advanced. I didn't even know there was a glossary until after the last page. I am also not a tree hugger, so with that out of the way.
Shannon Hunter is part of an Eco- terrorist group called ELF. One night her and the group try to set off a few incendiary devices and are easily apprehended by the FBI. Before she can get carted off to jail a figure appears on a hill and shoots an arrow into the devices and the whole place explodes. The figure then tries to kill Shannon and the two agents but misses. Later at the hospital the assassin appears again with orders to kill her. She stops him with a word, and then his orders change. He takes her into the veil instead. The synopsis on this book is very good and stays true to form. The book was written really well, and the only thing I found in my bias is that is was wordy. The author is so painfully descriptive that it almost takes away from the story. Character development was a problem for me too because Shannon was always changing. We knew she was something other but it took forever to come out. I feel you lose people when it becomes such a mystery. My favorite scene, is when she heals the Mother Tree and is gifted with white leaves. My worst is the descriptiveness of the author when he is wording that humans rape Mother Earth. I prefer to think of it as a rebirth. The storyline flowed, and this story is definitely in a unique category. I've read quite a bit, but nothing comes to mind as equal to this. Overall entertainment value.... I gave it three stars.

Be still my heart! Where do I begin with this one? Besides, to yell "I LOVED THIS BOOK!!" I mean total and complete! This one will be a read I return to after some time. For me that is a HUGE statement because I am not a re-reader often. Once I know a story, then I know it. There is no surprise left. With THIS book...WOW!!

White Leaves (E.L.F) is a fantasy novel in every way. I would truly like to tell much about this book, only I have no clue HOW to do so without ruining the ride for other readers. That is part of what I enjoyed most with White Leaves, so much was uncertain. You learn as the main character Shannon Hunter does. This made the story-line flow with more credibility to me. This is no SIMPLE read. It is written from many POV's throughout. In a fantasy tale, for me that is a key factor to understanding the way the world(s) in the book work. Author M.P. Ness has done a marvelous job in bringing modern times together with mythological legends to form his tale.

If I had any struggle with the book, it was nothing more than grasping how to say some of the names used. This is a fairly common thing with fantasy, so not very unexpected. I have struggled more with other reads. Author Ness had some foresight there, as he did incorporate a few pronunciation hints into the character dialogue. Well played M.P., highly grateful for that! I found the writing to flow well with very few edit issues. THAT was much appreciated in an E-book! The characters were at times so immense they were hard to envision, yet I see how that added to the entire thing for me. As I traveled the story with Shannon, the more I could "see" it all. Some of the description is superb. Many times I saw it all as a well done anime in my head! (If you knew my household, you would get that anime is HUGE.)

What have I read that could compare? Many things, and yet NOTHING. There is just so much that happens in the book, many questions, many emotions. I could mention a movie or two the sprung to mind during particular stages in the story. That would be all I could do, and it would not even come close. It is not JUST the main character that changes as in most books. By the end of White Leaves (E.L.F.), you could just as well be holding an entirely different book than what you first picked up. I am a VERY satisfied reader and have already pestered the author asking about the next book!

White Leaves is the first in Author M.P. Ness’s E.L.F. series, and is beyond anything I could have expected.

The book follows Shannon Hunter, an eco-terrorist working for an organization called E.L.F. (Earth Liberation Front) who unknowingly stumbles into the world of Elves. That sentence alone is enough to make you assume that this book will be singing and dancing and all the merry things that comes with the old Elf mythology. But the Elvine in this novel are by no means anything to underestimate.

The Elvine are the strongest and oldest things in existence, other than the Great Tree who created them all. There are a select few Elves called the Black Leaves that have the power to level cities with a single swipe of their blade. These are not creatures to toy with, unless you want to be sliced into bloody bits. They don’t mess around, and Shannon Hunter stands front row to watch them unleash their powers upon the world.

Thick with fantasy and action, White Leaves is nothing I expected it to be. Author M.P. Ness creates a world so fascinating and wondrous it’s hard to believe this hasn’t been made into a movie yet. His ability to write a scene, to paint a picture, is unbelievable. I was captured by his style of writing and was sad to have it end. I look forward to the next book in the series with great impatience!

I was given this book from Tour de Blogg in exchange for an honest review. I was interested in reading about elves in a modern age.

The story's opening automatically draws you in, allowing you to both get to know the main character as well as bringing you into it. I was immediately hooked.

The biggest drawback I found was its wordiness. There were many times I felt entire paragraphs could have been cut down to a sentence - or I found something repeated multiple times on a page. It kept pulling me out of the story.

I did enjoy it overall. It was fun to read, and it made me feel guilty for reading it on my kindle - haha! (read it and you'll understand why)

I would recommend this to both dystopian and fantasy lovers.

3/5 platypires!

I recently finished reading “White Leaves” by new author M. P. Ness, and I’d have to say it was a unique fantasy read. I very much enjoyed it.

“White Leaves” starts off with an action- packed “bang” and readers will meet Shannon Hunter, the book’s main character, an eco-terrorist and a member of the elusive Earth Liberation Front (E.L.F.), hard at work attempting to stop the environmentally unfriendly bull-dozing and logging practices of a large multi-million dollar conglomerate. Unfortunately for Shannon and her other team members; the night’s mission does not go as planned. And, while the machinery the Earth Liberation Front was attempting to destroy was successfully obliterated, it was not done by anyone on Shannon’s team…

Shannon winds up incarcerated, but she finds herself in the hospital due to injuries she sustained from the night’s mayhem. As she contemplates both the success, and the failure, she realizes she must acknowledge the possibility that what is labeled as “fantasy” within the world might, in fact, be real. How else can she explain her experiences, or what she witnessed?

I don’t want to provide any further aspects of the story as I don’t wish to take away any of the twists and surprises, but I will say that “White Leaves” is definitely a “must-read” for any lovers of the fantasy genre.

In summary, “White Leaves” was well-written, the various characters were always believable and the story-line was both unique, and interesting. My only concern was that there were a few instances where the explanations provided bordered on being…loquacious. However, I understand that this is the start of a series and sometimes a lot of explanation is needed.

Regardless, I give “White Leaves” a four star rating and I’m very much looking forward to reading the next book: “Blighted Leaves.”

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I was really intrigued by this story as I hadn't heard of anything like this before. I have read elf stories before, but nothing as imaginative and original as White Leaves. Shannon Hunter is trying to help the environment by joining E.L.F., the Earth Liberation Front. She is on an E.L.F. mission when things go terribly, terribly wrong. There are explosions and people getting shot and she ends up in the hospital. She's not sure if it's the drugs they are giving her or all of the stress of the night, but she is pretty sure that she saw something, someone at this mission site that didn't belong. Shannon is pretty sure that he was shooting at people with arrows. And he almost killed her.

I found this story to be very interesting, complex and at times hard to follow. But I loved it. I actually messaged the author to ask him about pronunciation of some of the characters and found out that there is a Glossary at the back. Cool!! That made things much easier. Michael has written a very complicated, multi-faceted, multi-dimensional story. There are so many layers of this world that he has built that it is easy to get lost in all of the possibilities of the tales that could be told in them. I hated that the story had to end and that I have to wait for the next one. I highly recommend this story for anyone that is tired of the normal elf stories and wants to read something a lot more involved and that makes you think and dream.

M.P Ness starts off White Leaves with a BANG, literally! Our main character, Shannon Hunter, is a member of an eco-terrorist organization called E.L.F (Earth Liberation Front). While on a mission of protest she somehow inadvertently gets mixed up with Elves. There are explosions, people get shot and some even disappear!

White Leaves is set in a time like our full of technology but also filled with myth. The mythology is tied in from different cultures. From the Chinese philosophy Ying and Yang to the Jewish, Christian, and Islamic teachings of the Archangel Michael and the main myth this book is focused on is that of the Tree of Life. In the world of White Leaves nothing is at is seems.

The characters were well developed and not without flaws. They were believable. The dialog was also very good even if I did have to check the glossary in the back every so often. ;) Ness' descriptions of the settings and the battles were captivating and I had no trouble imagining any of it. I especially liked that is the midst of all the chaos the connection between Shannon and Deh gave me the reader hope. Hope that good would prevail in the end.

Overall, White Leave is truly a unique story; it is like no other Fae story I’ve read. I believe we will see many great things writings by Ness in the future.

If you enjoy fantasy and adventure this is a book for you!

Note: I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

In this eco-centric tale, Shannon Hunter, a member of the Earth Liberation Front (E.L.F.), stumbles upon an unexpected discovery - real elves with more significant intentions than mere acts of sabotage. Her world is suddenly immersed in a realm of magic she never fathomed existed, revealing a dire reality for both humankind and herself. The elves have concluded that humanity, oblivious to its impending doom, must be stopped. Shannon finds herself in the unique position of preventing a supernatural war that could overwhelm humanity. To do so, she must overcome her misanthropic tendencies and avert the elves' catastrophic decision, which threatens not only mankind but all life on Earth.

This book offers a captivating blend of action, energy, and well-drawn characters. The narrative is brimming with life, and the characters' imperfections make them feel all the more authentic. Ness skillfully introduces complex concepts that the characters must confront, adding depth and intrigue to the story.

For those who revel in fantasy adventures, this book comes highly recommended. It combines a thrilling plot with vibrant characters and explores challenging themes, making it a must-read for fans of the genre.

White Leaves is the first in Author M.P. Ness's E.L.F. series. What is E.L.F. White Leaves? It is a fantasy adventure, a world where everything is not as it seems. Ness pulls the reader into the action, revealing a world on the brink of destruction. The descriptions are very realistic while entertaining.
The main character is Shannon Hunter, an eco-terrorist working for an organization called E.L.F. (Earth Liberation Front) who accidentally stumbles into the world of Elves. These are not the same elf’s that we read about in fairytales. These Elvin were created by the Great Tree and are the strongest and oldest things in existence. They are billions of years old, their time moves slower at a much slower pace than our time. There is a small group called the Black Leaves that have the power to wipe out cities with one swipe of their blade. These are not anything you want to mess with, unless you want to be sliced by their blades. They don't mess around, and Shannon Hunter watched them unleash their powers upon the world. The story makes you wonder is this world is worth saving? By the end of the story, that question will be answered.
I highly recommend this book to those that like a fantasy adventure! Looking forward to reading M.P. Ness’s next adventure!

Let me just start this off by saying that I'm not a big fantasy guy. I mean, I can enjoy fantasy if it's light on the fantasy and more on the realistic side of things, but I've never been a guy who's into elves or sorcery. E.L.F. starts off on a realistic note, given that it's about eco-terrorists, but then it goes off into a different territory involving elves and stuff like that. That's where it threw me a little. That said, I am probably one of the only people who cannot get through the Lord of the Rings books, and I did get through this book, so that's definitely saying something. M.P. Ness shines when he's writing action scenes, as I know another critic noted. The story of the black leaves and Lady White Leaves is intriguing in that there is a good central female character in Shannon Hunter, who it takes a little while to like, but once you do, you're with her all the way. The writing is good, even though I feel there could have been more description with setting scenes, and the pacing goes quickly once you get to about to page 50 or so. Overall, if you dig fantasy, give this book one more star to my review. It's a good book. It's just not my thing.

Wonderful!

This book is wonderful. The beginning drew me in with no effort at all. I was wrapped up in this tale and ate it up hungrily. The descriptions, wonderful. The conversations, believable. The ending, mind blowing! I loved it. From 70% on in the novel I was reading so close to the kindle that I had folks making fun of me in my home. Usually I am one to make a snippy comment to hush them up, but because I would have had to stop reading to do so, it went undone. I loved the book, I loved the way it was written and furthermore none of it was silly or unbelievable.
As a fantasy novel it did everything that it was supposed to do, and the modern elements that played their parts didn't make everything in the book less believable or take away from the fantasy portions. I followed easily and loved all of it! I would recommend this to everyone!

I picked this up at Norwescon, directly from the author. I had high hopes for it -set in Seattle it has a unique dystopian fantasy world vibe and a unique plot going for it.

While the book starts off with a literal bang as Shannon ends up in the middle of an elf attack on a logging operation, the over-written descriptions and frequent sentence repeats kept drawing me out of the story. An entire chapter consists of nothing but the main elf’s superior yelling ‘But you didn’t kill her’ over and over for what felt like ages.

I slogged on to the end of chapter 6, hoping for it to improve, but I finally gave up after a two page description of someone drawing a sword.

I won this book while participating in another author's online book release party. The holidays cuts jnto my reading time unfortunately, but this book was well written and full of adventure that I cannot wait to start the second book in the series (which I also won).

Shannon Hunter is determined to protect the environment at all costs, but this drive to do so leads her on the adventure of a lifetime with some fantasy creatures that one though only existed in fairy tales. M.P. Ness takes you on a fantastic and well written journey that any lover of adventure fantasy does not want to missout on! Much like a modern day Lord of the Rings type books!
