A Slow Burning Fire

Rate this book
Ever since super star, Arial Oakley, could remember, she's been in love with her hunky co-star Bryce Valentine. The only problem: Bryce has been in a relationship with another ac-tress for quite some time. Not wanting to be “the other woman”, Arial never pursued any of her feelings for him despite how well they connected.

When Bryce suddenly becomes single, both of their worlds are flipped upside down. To help him nurse his aching heart, Arial invites him back home to her family farm for some much needed peace and quiet from the paparazzi.

What neither of them expects is to fall in love: with the calm, with the country, with each other. But how much of it is real, and how much of it is a means to escape a broken heart?

Grab a cup of hot chocolate and pull up a comfy chair. I think that you will enjoy this sweet romance. It was fun, sad, clean, and a pleasure to read.

Arial Oakley and Bryce Valentine are young actors living in the glittering world of excess and “do what you want” lifestyle of the entertainment industry and yet, they are striving to maintain their moral code. They have problems just like everyone else and have to deal with issues of family and fame while navigating their way through the pitfalls life throws at them.

The story is a read and I would recommend it to teenagers as well as adults. Ms. Jenkins’ other books will be on my reading list.

The story was the timeless tale of self discovery leading to love.

It was an easy read. The plot was very obvious early on but it was still fun to read to the end and cheer the young lovers on. It was a nice way to spend a few hours on a rainy night. It's not really anything I would insist my friends read.

I received a copy of Slow Burning Fire for an honest review.

Arial Oakley has been in love with her co-star Bryce Valentine for the past nine years. Now that the show has ended and Bryce’s long term girlfriend have finally split up Bryce isn’t sure what he wants to do for the summer months. Arial is going home and after helping Bryce get home from a night out she invites him to her family farm for the next two months. What neither of them expect is to fall in love and when feelings continue to grow and be realized between the two of them they both take the leap but the process is slow like a slow burning fire.

Dull:
I felt the entire book was dragged on and on and on…etc. Everything seemed to be repeated and nothing happened until the last like ten pages which was frustrating. The entire book went something like:

Arial: I’m in love with my best friend but he’s in love with his ex and now I’m emo.
Bryce: I’m not so happy with the last nine years of my life and actually I’m in love with my best friend but I should just wait this out.
LALALALAALA: Same thing until almost end and thenà
Almost ending: Byrce: I love you. Arial: I’m running away from you.
Then they both fall madly in love and blah blah blah.
The end.

Not even lying that was the entire book and I really was kinda ticked. Slow Burning Fire was right because it took for-freaking-ever for this book to pick up into something.

Cliché:
Best friends in love each other but don’t realize it and then deny it because they don’t want to ruin anything and end up falling in love a+nyway…sound familiar anyone? I don’t know I felt like this book was just a big cliché moment because it seemed so obvious they would end up together even though they were best friends.

Character Flaws:
*sigh* this book seemed to have very flat characters with no real depth other than what they said. All of their thoughts and actions were kind of shallow and they seemed to not really be what they portrayed. Like they said they were in their early and late twenties but they acted a lot younger and very inexperienced in all things. I think the author tried to make them seem jaded and cold sometimes but they just came across as moody teenagers. I also didn’t like how Arial was always calm cool and collected and then out of nowhere she was a completely different character. None of the teasing or interactions between any of the characters seemed real and I think that aspect made none of the characters relatable or likeable.

Author tried too hard:
The wording choice in this book seemed forced in that the author was hand picking every word instead of having it flow naturally. The words and flow were very chopping and made for difficult reading.

Overall:
The book was dull and flat to me. I thought the author forced every single word out and that aspect really affected my reading and just how I reacted and related to the characters. I also felt the book was slow moving and predictable. All in all I wouldn’t recommend this book but I know other readers have enjoyed it but it just wasn’t for me.

My Review:

A Slow Burning Fire by J.F. Jenkins was a quick romantic read. I love it when best friends fall in love! These stories just steal my heart. I loved the blurb for this book and I had a few expectations going into it. Romance ... Check! Hot Best friend ... Check! The only thing that was missing for me was the chemistry between Arial and Bryce and my connection to Arial. It was there, but not strong enough for me. The book is writen in both POV's and I really liked that. The story was predictable, but I still enjoyed it.

Arial has been in love with her best friend, Bryce, for a few years. When he's single again, she hopes that she can make him see with time that they could become a couple. On his side, Bryce sees Arial under a new light.

Arial was very hard to connect with. Her insecurity got a bit on my nerves. I wanted her to step into her ''Work'' shoes and apply what she did onscreen to her own life. She overreacted in a lot of situations with Bryce and her family. She did eventually clear up all her emotions, but I was left wanting more from her. What I liked about her is that she respected herself and her best friend and kept her feelings to herself when he was in a relationship.

Bryce had my attention from the beginning. Even if he was heartbroken, once his emotions were settled, he knew what he wanted. I loved the way he acted around Arial and how he treated her. A real GENTLEMAN!

Arial and Bryce's romance was slow building. Even if they shared onscreen kisses before, they only get to share their first REAL kiss late in the book. Both of them took time to cross that line between friendship and love. The word that could describe their romance the best would be SWEET.

My Rating:

I give A Slow Burning Fire by J.F. Jenkins 3 sweet and romantic stars!

I felt like this book title really fit this book. The romance in this book was really slow developing. It starts out as friends and basically stays there through the whole book even though both main characters realize they have feelings for each other.

I appreciated that Arial kept her attraction to Bryce in check because he was in a relationship. She wasn't out to steal him away but instead contented herself with being his friend. When Bryce's relationship fails, he doesn't jump right into a relationship with Arial. He takes his time and enjoys the friendship that they share. Friendship is a great base to any relationship.

I did feel that for most of the book I was just waiting. Waiting for something to happen. We get a lot of farm life and chores. I felt as though the story sort of dragged on through the middle. The characters felt a bit younger to me than what they were said to be, especially Bryce. Arial's behavior in the end after Bryce finally confesses his feelings really baffled me. It seemed completely out of character for her and very childish. It was weird and I didn't completely buy into it.

But, having said all that, I did enjoy this book. It was sweet and clean, easy reading. I polished it off pretty fast, diverted from my mom duties, in escape mode. :)

As always, my thanks to Astraea Press for allowing me to read and review for them.

"Change I can handle, but the unknown is what worries me. What's life without a little adventure, though?"
Arial liked her co-star for a while but he was already in a relationship. After the film they were in was over they hoped to spend a little more time together so they both go back to Ariel's hometown. Bryce reveals that he and his longtime girlfriend broke it off and Arial wants to be there for him. Arial feels like this is a tough moment of his life so she doesn't want to push herself on him being newly broken up. She wants to wait for the right moment to tell him but if she tells him she's risking him rejecting her and ruining their friendship.

I enjoyed this quick and easy read. I loved that this book wasn't one of those cheesey instant love connections book (Don't get me wrong I love my instant connection books but this book was a breath of fresh air) At times I felt that this book went too slow and not enough conflicts, but the sweetness between the two is what kept me. I loved that this book had more than one point of view and that I got to see the true feelings behind the characters. I loved that each of them had a backstory that people can relate to.

Overall I enjoyed this sweet book and recommend you lovely readers to check out this book.
