We've already met Nick Santos of the notorious Bad Boys Trio of Wolf River in book one, the charming devil who irritates the hell out of his co-bad boy buddy Lucas when he flirts with his wife, Julianna. In that book we saw Nick, who'd dropped in to visit Lucas decided to settle down in Wolf River, quitting the motorcycle racing circuit after being in it for ten years and being a four times champion winner. Since machines fascinated him and he enjoyed tearing apart and making things, he's started his own cycle making business.
While he's at the local supermarket, a petite, good-looking red-haired woman catches his fancy, but when he introduces himself to her she pales, fumbles and then flees away from him leaving him puzzled. Later he's shocked to know she's Maggie Smith, the shyest girl in his school, often described as quiet-as-a-mouse, never-looked-anyone-in-the-eye, big glasses and curly red hair Maggie Smith. He couldn't believe she'd changed so much in life.
Maggie is now a journalist in New York and is visiting Wolf River for few weeks to help her parents since her father had a knee surgery. When she was thirteen she'd fallen in love with Nick after he'd dumped a bully who'd made her cry, into a trash can. But, since she wasn't bold and attractive like the other girls whom Nick went out with, she'd kept her fantasies about Nick to herself and had no intention of letting Nick know. Years later, while she was working with a newspaper soon after she'd graduated, she had a lucky break to do a sports assignment. However, to her dismay it was to interview two time national champion Nick Santos. In that circuit Nick had won his third championship and when a nervous Maggie reached his hotel suite she found he was in the midst of a big celebratory party.
Overwhelmed by it, she decided to leave, but a man from the party thought she was a staff from the hotel who’d come to inspect a problem Nick had reported in the bathroom and dragged her to the bathroom despite her protests and left her there with a glass of champagne. She was so out of her depths that she gulped down the champagne to relax her. When she left the bathroom, she found the bedroom plunged in darkness and whilst fumbling for the switch she ended up crashing into Nick with both of them ending up on his bed. When he said he was glad to see her, she thought he recognized her and let herself get lost in the passion brewing between them. She was a virgin. Later, Nick calls her by another name and asks him to stay with him.
Maggie is shattered realizing he made love to her thinking she was another woman, so while he was sleeping she quietly leaves him. Two months later when she finds out she is pregnant it was around the same time she sees the news where Nick wins a custody battle against a woman who falsely claimed he was the father of the child and since he had no idea he'd made love to Maggie, she didn't want to go through the humiliation of trying to prove he did and perhaps rejection of her and their baby. So, she doesn't tell him about their son, Drew, who is four years now. She married a fellow journalist when her son was six months old but the marriage didn't go beyond six months, and the divorce was amicable.
That night when they made love Nick had thought he'd made love to an ex-girlfriend and was surprised by the feeling he'd had for her later on, because he never felt something like that before. However, when he called her up, she told him she wasn't with him and ever since he'd been dreaming about the faceless virgin (which he discovers later) woman he'd made love to. Now, that he's with Maggie he feels there's something between them, something he should be remembering but he couldn't.
It was fine that Maggie was no more the scared, mousy girl she'd been, rather a successful journalist and was capable of flipping over the same bully to the floor when he'd tried his age-old tricks again, but I felt it was very mean and selfish of her to keep from Nick and Drew that they're father and son. She can see Nick has changed so much, moreover, he and Drew got along so well, but yet she is determined that Nick shouldn't know Drew is his son. It was but natural for Nick to be furious when he knows the truth from other sources. Even after that, instead of bringing him around, she takes the cowardly way and tries to flee. If it weren't for Julianna going into labour, she would've taken off. Other than this, I found the book enjoyable. I loved Nick and Drew's bonding and the usual banter and scuffles between Nick and Lucas.
The epilogue was fab. Besides, Nick, Maggie, Drew, Lucas and Julianna and their newborn twins forming their own little family, the third of the bad boy trio returns - Ian Shawnessy. I couldn't help laugh imagining the terror on his face when Julianna dumped both her twins into his arms. I adore Barbara McCauley. Her books are fab.
Bir an eski sevgilisinin ismini söyleyince Maggie sabahına hiçbir şey söylemeden orayı terk eder. Yıllar sonra babasının rahatsızlığı nedeniyle memleketine geri döndüğünde Nick'in de orada yaşadığını görür ve ona ikisinin çocuğu olduğunu anlatsın mı yoksa saklamaya devam mı etsin diye düşünürken kader kendi yolunu çizmeyi her şeyden daha çok sever.
