**May 2014 updated and revised and includes POV's from Cooper and Ben**
Choices in life are hard.
College student Emily Reynolds has been in a three year relationship with Cooper Thomason but a few events has left their relationship shaken. She finds out she is pregnant and Cooper can’t give up his partying ways. Emily leaves Cooper and tries to find a life without him. She soon finds out a life without Cooper is harder than she thinks. Will Emily be able to move on from Cooper and find a relationship with another man or run back to him?
Oh wow I am truelly left speechless. I have enjoyed this book so much... The emotions I experience throughout this book was crazy. I love how Emily and Cooper got together... The fact that they were so madly in love. When Cooper took the pot and she stormed off not thinking of anything else but his betrayal I have to say was quite epic, but the fact that she gave him an ultimatum made it so much better. And Cooper went and screwed that up, by doing the same mistake again only now Em was pregnant with his baby. I understand from her point that she doesn't want to have her baby in that sort of situation. I mean what mommy wants that... They only want the best for their kids. The fact that Em started dating Ben made the story very interesting because well Cooper is the love of her life and she can't seem to keep away from him. Emotional or physical.... She hurt Cooper very much, but he didn't deserve much pity as he was the one that screwed up first. Finally giving the news to her parents and his dad. She was really nervous, but only because part of what she was telling her parents was a lie. The fact that Cooper didn't give up on Em is really sweet... He believed in their love and the way he offered to buy them a house and care for her and the baby is so beautiful. The weekend of her trip to vegas I was really scared something would go wrong to end things finally between her and Cooper, but then his dad was in hospital for a heart attack and she new then where a priorities was. When she said they would get back together if he will still have her made me cry, but I cried even harder when he told her he is wasting no more time and wants her to become his wife. I am so happy they got married and had the experience of the birth of they baby girl with all the love a mommy and daddy can share... Amazing.... Hope to read more about Jen and Emily brother. Sorry for Ben who got dumped by Emily but I mean u have to know jumping out of a serious relationship the next one that comes along is truelly a rebound.... Thank u so much for giving me the opportunity to read your book. I have enjoyed every second spent on it and hope to read more soon. It was truelly an amazing story and the characters are fantastic. Many hugs Chaude
Trying To Get Over You by J.D. Rivera 5 Stars- “Trying To Get Over You” is a feel-good-all-over read!
Emily Reynolds and Cooper Thomason are two college kids in love. They share an apartment while both attend school. Cooper is all set to graduate with a promising career as soon as he finishes school. Emily is working on her degree with high hopes of having a family with Cooper someday.
The book begins with a very immature, young relationship, something that many of us go through. Trials and tribulations of not being ready to grow up and be responsible surely set up the issues in this relationship. Emily isn’t fond of Jason, an acquaintance of Cooper, and the drama that he creates in their relationship. He is always encouraging Cooper to smoke pot and party. At a party one evening, Cooper smokes a joint that is laced. This starts the turmoil around their relationship. Soon after their breakup, Emily finds out some life-changing news that will affect the both of them for the rest of their lives.
While Emily works desperately to stick to her guns and keep her distance from Cooper, she learns that may be much harder than she could ever imagine. Given the circumstances, young love seems to make such a lasting impression as if it will last forever. Will Emily and Cooper make it? Will they end up regretting the choices that they make? Will she ever get over him?
I found myself serious attached to Emily and her feelings. She really grew on me. This New Adult Romance Novel is surely to find your sweet spot and if you are an 80’s baby, it will bring back some memories too.
“Trying To Get Over You” is a feel-good-all-over read! J.D. Rivera sets the tone perfectly for a summertime beach read just in time for New Adult’s to hit the sand in 2013!
I read the original version of this book and liked it a lot, but after reading the updated version all I can say is that I did not know what I was missing. Emily is trying to move on from Cooper by dating Ben but little does the other know that they are using each other. Cooper on the other hand never waivers about how he feels about Emily. In the first version you feel bad for Ben now he is just a ass. I love that the ending is still the same.
Cooper and Emily, in love- college students. After years of being together, Cooper had a adolescent pot problem. Nothing of an addiction, but a personal dislike of Emily. Cooper was the idea boyfriend ~DREAMY,SEXY,SMART,CARING,THE WHOLE DAMN PACKAGE~ but, The beginning of the story starts off with this ..
ULTIMATIUM.
"I know I told you I wouldn't smoke pot again, I'm sorry I messed up."
Cooper chooses Emily vs his recreational habit. That was the plan at least, until one day he got caught. Busted. Emily took this as a huge trust issue. This all came down the same day she received life altering news.
"I don't give a shit if you had a bad day! Mine was full of surprises too! We are done!"
How do you stay away from the person you loved the most? How can you get over that person. Emily finds herself going out on dates, meanwhile being miserable during this, only thinking of Cooper and her "little problem". What more to make the poor man jealous by MOVING on.
Emily tried. Emily was stubborn. Emily was definitely making a point.
Emily Failed.
Without giving away spoilers to this book-I will stop right there- I do recommend this book-its a cute romance novel, and I love it.
HOW MANY TIMES CAN SOMEONE MAKE A MISTAKE BEFORE YOU WALK AWAY OR IS WALKING AWAY THE BIGGEST MISTAKE?

Can Emily walk away so easily from her relationship with Cooper? Will Cooper stop the drug use for Emily and the baby?
Author JD Rivera’s romance novel, Trying to Get Over You, has done an AMAZING job writing a CUTE LOVE STORY that will capture your attention immediately and find yourself unable to put the book down. You will also experience a roller coaster of emotions from feeling DISTRUST, HOPE, HEARTACHE, and LOVE.
"I knew I was probably playing with fire, but I’d always been the type that had to get burned before I learned."
I rate JD Rivera’s novel in the Trying series, Trying to Get Over You – 4 AMAZING STARS!
There were some really good things about this book and then there were some annoying things. I absolutely LOVE Cooper. I mean if you could have an almost perfect guy he would be it. He obviously loves Emily but does make some mistakes. He tries to do the best that he can and he tells her constantly that he loves her. There are some times that he should show her but doesn't and well that is typical. I really wanted to just slap Emily through most of the book. I understand being 20 and in college but there were some moments that I was just like "Really? You're not in high school...come on." Don't get me wrong...for the most part she is a good girl and I would have liked her if she wasn't quite so naïve with the "I've never done anything wrong attitude." Which she really hasn't ever done anything wrong but still. I did not read the original version of this book without the guys' POV but I think that it really made me love Cooper more than I would have in the original.
The story is pretty good and I think a lot of people will really like it. I am giving this book 4 out of 5 stars. This is a sweet story about young love and I recommend it.
'Trying to Get Over You' is a journey of a couple College student Emily Reynolds and Cooper Thomason. They had been dating for three years and Emily got tired of Cooper's pot habit.... She told him that it was either the drugs or her. Things were going well until one day, that day totally changed Emily's life forever: she found out she was pregnant. She came home to tell Cooper the news, only to find him smoking it up with a Jason, a guy Emily doesn't like and two blonde chicks hanging all over Cooper.
Emily moved out immediately and tried to move on.... Cooper really loves Emily and Emily loves him. Moving on might not be the best idea Emily has... Will it work? Will she get back with Cooper? You really need to read to find out.
Go grab this book. I was an emotional basket case reading this book. The ending made it all worth it.
College student Emily Reynolds has been in a three year relationship with Cooper Thomason but one awful night has left their relationship shaken. She soon finds out she is pregnant and Cooper can’t give up his partying ways. Emily leaves Cooper and tries to find a life without him. She finds out a life without Cooper is harder than she thinks. Will Emily be able to move on from Cooper and find a relationship with another man or run back to him?
This book is a great summer read. It’s light and full of love and romance. Who hasn’t had a love that they can’t get over? I found myself falling in love with Emily and Cooper. I was rooting for them the whole way. I can’t imagine all the emotions that were running through Emily at the time. I found myself drawn to this story because it mirrors my current love life. Thankfully I’m not pregnant though! I am just having a very difficult time moving on from an ex. Sometimes a character or characters in a book speak to you in different ways. There were times when one or more were annoying me, or making me mad. That is how you know it’s a good book though. You are invested into the story and characters. I give this book a 5 out of 5.
When I started reading the book, I was like oh no. I hope it's not this slow throughout the book. I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't!
After the prologue and first chapter, the story picks up and we get going. Emily and Cooper have a lot going on. Which leads to Emily leaving Cooper...
At first, I thought Emily was really immature for doing what she did. But put yourself in her shoes. Do you want to always have to worry if you're going to come home to someone strung out? Maybe it would be better to just to cut ties and work something else out.
Or just taking a step back to realize everything you would be missing out on...
This story is all too real... And I am happy it ended the way it did.
Trying To Get Over You is now on my list of favorite books. I loved that Emily is against drugs just like me and decided to leave Cooper because she thought that would be the best for their baby. I thought it was wrong for her to use someone else to try to get over Cooper but nobody is perfect and everybody makes mistakes. Even with all their problems Emily and Cooper seemed to have a great relationship. I could really understand what Emily was going through and that made me love the story even more. Thank you J.D. Rivera for writing such a great book!
This is one of those books that will have people divided over it because of its heroine and the way the story ended. I’m not say how the book ends but for some it may seem ‘What the hell just happened?’ But that being said, it does fit in considering what the heroine and hero are like together and apart because one has it together and the other is train wreck. And it’s not who you expect who is the train wreck!
Emily is a junior in college and appears to have everything she wants. She has a wonderful boyfriend, Cooper, who is a senior and has an amazing job offer once he graduates. It’s only a matter of time before they get engaged. They only have one problem: Cooper’s drug habit that he has courtesy of the friend who supplies with him it, Jason. Emily hates it and has told him numerous times that she wants him stop and not hang with Jason but Cooper never listens. So it’s the last straw when she goes to a party and sees Cooper coming out a bedroom with a beautiful brunette after being warned by her brother Chris not to go in the house. Chris is Cooper’s best friend and has always looked out for her because Cooper is like his brother and Emily has always been more like a best friend. He knows about Cooper’s drug use.
Emily is mad as she rushes home and Cooper follows her—and I won’t give it away but this is an awful night in question. She gives him one last chance as he promises her that he won’t ever do it again. A few days later, Emily discovers that she’s pregnant and comes home to find Cooper and Jason with two girls all doing drugs.
It’s the last straw for her and she flees to her best friend Jen’s apartment. She tries to move on but how she when everyone is going to be talking and divided on the issue. She knows that she still loves Cooper and at first she aims to only focus on the baby. However, then Ben, a guy she knows from one of her classes asks her out on a date. At first she makes it clear that she only wants to be friends but she’s a veritable train wreck emotionally, all over the place, and she decides maybe she wants to be more than that. Ben can be her rebound guy but she doesn’t tell him so and hopes that by the time she is heavily pregnant he will dump her. This is the ‘what the hell?’ bit because she’s still loving Cooper and thinking of their special moments etc.
Factor in Cooper to this mix now. He seems to have turned over a new leaf and wants to be there for Emily even though she’s clear that she doesn’t want him and you have a story that you either love or hate by the end. The way it’s written looking from Emily’s perspective makes the situation plausible and that why I liked it and was willing to give it such a high rating because honestly the book is mainly about the young adults. The focus is on young adults, and older folk don’t feature into this story or show much influence. Trying to Get Over You is realistic and shows how not everything can be alright when you experience a life altering event. I think we’ve been given too much of a fairytale spin on this kind of story and it’s nice to see content that hits closer to the truth and real life. 4 couples. HORRIBLE "heroine". Emily will drive you crazy while Cooper will make you wish you had a guy like him. Seriously though, the h ruined this book for me. She is completely selfish.
Plot: Cooper and Emily have been dating for like 3 years. Cooper like to smoke pot. Emily gives him an ultimatum to never smoke pot again, or she will leave him for good. Well, after about a month, Cooper ends up smoking and Emily walks in right as he is doing it. On top of that, she has just left the doctors office where she finds outs she is pregnant.
In order to try and move on from Cooper, Emily starts dating Ben. Ben really likes her, but multiple times in the book Emily reiterates the point(although not to Ben) that she still loves Cooper, but doesn't want to be with him, and she is going to use Ben to get over him. Cooper tries everything possible to get her back and is really sweet with her during her pregnancy. Knowing the "love of his life" is with another dude really gets to him.
The whole time, Cooper is supportive of the pregnancy and can't wait to be a Dad. Emily is still trying to have her cake and eat it too almost the entire book.
Add a trip to Vegas, and a bunch more drama before Emily decides that she's done "trying to get over" Cooper.
Things I didn't like Emily- she is completely selfish, delusional, and the things she does are really really cruel. She continues to hangout and show affection to Cooper throughout their "breakup." Sleeping in the same bed, kissing him, telling him she loves him... all while still having her boyfriend Ben. Talk about a complete BITCH!
And really how DUMB can she be? Everyone - he brother, her best friend, her family, EVERYONE-around her is telling her how much Cooper loves her, and that she is stringing him along and hurting him, but she just excuses her behaviors be causes "no one has the right to judge her or her relationships." What a fucking cop-out. Needless to say, I can't stand her.
Things I liked Cooper- the only redeeming factor in the whole book. Why he loves Emily is a wonder to me.
Trying to Get Over You was my first read by J.D Rivera and I have to say I really enjoyed reading it. This book has given me another book boyfriend named Cooper Thomason, because the guy was just amazing, sweet, sexy, dayum I'm just gonna say the whole alpha male package lol, whilst still holding his appeal even as he redeemed himself. The romance between Emily and Cooper was so sweet and romantic that I instantly loved the pairing. Emily and Cooper's relationship was perfect and full of bliss. Cooper knew from first sight that Emily was the only girl he would ever love, their love was strong and they had a bright future together. Cooper's bad choices turn his world upside down, risking the one thing dear to his life. There was some emotional scenes where I felt Emily made the right decision in telling Cooper to sort himself out, as Cooper stepped out of character with his partying ways, considering her own life had taken a new turn. The rest of the time I wanted to shout at Emily because Cooper really manned up and he still stayed loyal towards her, he did act a bit immature in dealing with his jealousy but the man was totally in love with her, that he still remained adorable in my eyes and I couldn't hate him lol. Emily was a mess, her character really showed that she loved Cooper but she just wouldn't allow him back into her life, making all the wrong decisions whilst hurting Cooper further, when she knew deep down that Cooper held her heart. I felt sorry for Cooper, but more so for Ben as I thought Emily treated him bad and he deserved better until I read his pov lol. This was a loveable and heart-breaking read, showing how true love deserves a second chance and with time comes perspective and understanding. This makes my favourites list! I loved Cooper and Emily together they were a sweet couple! This revised edition made it even more loveable as both Cooper and Ben's pov's had been included, helping me to understand their thoughts and emotions as each guy struggled to deal with the other, whilst trying to get over and under Emily.
Trying To Get Over You is an incredible and emotional read all wrapped up into one. I could not put this book down because I had to see what was going to happen to this couple. I mean college is hard enough as it is but add to the mix a relationship and then a pregnancy that is enough to stress anyone out.
Emily and Cooper have been together for three years. They have been going strong and Cooper loves Emily like no one's business. As they are together at school Emily starts to worry about Cooper's drug use and hanging out all the time. But Cooper tells her has it under control when he does not. Soon one mistake between Cooper and Emily brings the house of cards tumbling down. Emily finds out she is pregnant and she is scared to death because Cooper's drug use has gotten worse. What is Emily to do? Should she tell Cooper she is pregnant or not and when she does what will happen? How will Cooper respond?
Emily is also worried about Cooper's drug use getting worse and after talking to Cooper Emily knows what she must do. She leaves Cooper and he is devastated but he has decided that it is time to get his stuff together. As Emily tries to move on she realizes that she can't. She loves Cooper to much and Cooper loves her and he is determined to right the wrong he has done. But will Cooper be able to stop the drugs and get Emily back?
This is such an emotional read that will leave you breathless and full of tears! Get the box of tissues out because you are going to need them!
I was very excited to read this book. The synopsis had me very interested. So, I start reading it and I fall in love with Cooper. I just clicked with him from the get go! #TEAMCOOPER I can understand that emotions were high (no pun intended lol) and Emily made a choice that could have easily been handled with a compromise. This choice sent us on a journey that were not easy to handle. In making these choices, I wanted to throat punch Emily in some parts of the book. I can understand her reasoning behind it, but she also never gave Cooper a chance to show her that he had changed. I am not a big fan of second chances, but each case I like to handle on a case by case basis because circumstances are always different. So, when I was thinking about rating it, I was leaning toward 3-3.5, but upon more reflection of all these characters in my head it dawned on me that this is easily a 4 Star book. Ms. Rivera took me on a myriad of emotions with both characters and without including spoilers, she made me connect with these characters. Now isn't that a sign of a great book? Yes I believe it is. I would like to see some growth and maturity in book #2, but I have no doubt that Ms. Rivera can and will deliver!
I really enjoyed this book, and I found it to be refreshing.
This is JD Rivera's debut novel, and I read it with that in mind. It exceeded my expectations, and I think she has a real talent as an author. I'll be reading her next works.
Without giving away major plot points, I will say that I found Cooper and Emily's relationship to be pretty realistic of the types of relationships people have while in college in their early 20s. People overreact, they jump to conclusions, they make decisions and then change their minds seconds later. JD captured that very well. I didn't come away loving both characters, but I didn't expect to, either. College romances are often messy. This one certainly was.
It's a quick read, perfect for an afternoon, a trip in the car, a day at the beach, or an airplane ride. She doesn't waste time on repeating details over and over or unnecessary description I found that refreshing, as well.
I was expecting more from this book. I almost immediately felt off kilter when I started reading because it felt like some information was missing. The basic concept of the story is great, however everything felt too perfect and there were a few details that made no sense at all.
I liked Emily Reynold's resolve. She was firm and non negotiable about Cooper. I also thought her parental reaction to the whole situation was a little mild. I know everyone's parents are different, but it was hard for me to believe that's how they felt about what had happened.
This is the first book in a series and I will have to see what the second one is about before I pick it up to read it.
I didn't feel anything, I completely blanked. Normally the emotion is there or it's not and this writer really didn't give me any from the characters at all, other than irritation. In fact I wanted to smack the hero and heroine but mostly the chick for being so stupid. /facepalm.
Surprisingly I enjoyed this book, some of the chapters are a bit unrealistic and far fetches but hey it's a story and it has a lovely ending. I also like how it ends with a nice clear epilogue rather than a cliff hanger! Worth the read
This is a believable story with characters you can relate to. A compelling read that is hard to put down. Looking forward to more goodreads from this author.
I like the book but I found frustrating how half of it was spent with the female character acting like an immature brat. ugh. Loved Cooper tough! :D <3
****3.5**** This is another book I was super excited to read. When I got my e-arc copy for the blog tour I started reading it that same day. The beginning caught my interest right away but after a few pages it all went down hill for me.
I am going to keep this review short and simple. When I read a book I like to develop a connection towards the characters. If I can't connect with the character, or if they just get on my nerves throughout the story, then I will not be able to really get into the story. This was the case with Trying to Get Over You. I actually felt a connection with the main guys character, Cooper, then Emily's character. I know Cooper did wrong in doing drugs, but he changes when he finds out that Emily is pregnant. He learns his mistakes and he tries everything, and will give up anything to get Emily back. Emily give this guy a break! Everyone deserves a second chance, especially Cooper who was always there for her when they weren't even dating. I would have just left Emily to deal with her own problems, especially when she starts dating a new guy, Ben, to "try to get over" Cooper. This leads to my irritation with Emily's character. She just irritated the hell out of me right after she finds out she is pregnant and leaves Cooper. All of her actions are just wrong, she just keeps hurting herself and Cooper. At first I supported her actions in leaving Cooper, but I had to disagree with her actions further in the story because Cooper changes. Overall, I liked all the other characters, except Ben and Emily, in Trying to Get Over You by J.D. Rivera. The story in general is pretty good, but I think J.D. Rivera can take it up a step :).
The only reason I gave this Trying to Get Over You 3.5 stars was because I just loved Cooper's character, and I loved the ending :D!
Will I be reading the second book in the Trying series? Yes! I just have a feeling that the second book is going to be better than the first book. Like I said before, everyone deserves a second chance. I am going to give Emily's character a second chance, especially since I love Emily and Cooper together :D!
