A very readable French manga with A Quiet Place influence.

Lorsqu'on développe une histoire, on oublie à quel point ce qu'on appelle "l'arrière-monde" est important. C'est particulièrement le cas en fantasy, car si l'auteur n'a pas bien défini les règles et la géographie par exemple, le lecteur sent cette hésitation. Le manga Silence a cette force: l'ensemble est très cohérent. L'histoire des réfugiés est bien développée, les pouvoirs ont une logique, les motivations des héros sont complexes et réalistes. Yoann Vornière dévoile graduellement ces mystères aux lecteurs, de façon très habile, il a le don de raconter, en plus d'avoir un dessin dynamique. Silence se lit d'une traite, l'histoire est prenante, sans temps mort, les personnages sont attachants.
Le seul hic du tome 1, c'est le personnage secondaire féminin, Ocelle, qu'on néglige un peu, surtout depuis sa tentative de sortie. Elle reste en attente, beaucoup trop sage pour une fille qui a tant d'audace. J'espère qu'elle sera davantage partie prenante de l'aventure dans les tomes suivants.
J'ai adoré les références au bestiaire du folklore français, c'est une belle idée de s'inspirer de la richesse de ces monstres populaires! Étant Québécoise, je connais peu ceux de la France, même si je connais très bien la souris verte de la comptine, mais je ne la voyais pas comme ça! Fantastique! C'est une excellente idée d'avoir mis deux pages explicatives sur le bestiaire à la fin aussi, avec des commentaires de l'auteur.
Vraiment, un récit bien raconté, un trait riche et maîtrisé, un synopsis intéressant et un monde bien développé, c'est bien parti pour cette série originale française de 4 tomes. Bravo!

What a great read this was.
You can tell with every panel that Yoann Vornière put a lot of hours into planning, writing, and drawing this story.
The story and the art work together in a symphony of visual delight.
The artist uses techniques like adding dashes on the exterior of word balloons and drawing miniature hand signs within the word balloons to convey when characters are hand signing to one another.
The story is full of rich lore to explore but it never comes across as overwhelming.
The characters are so charming and each has their own strong personality that keeps you invested in each of their lives.
The creature designs are unique and work so well with the world that’s established.
Just like the characters, each one has its own unique flair that keeps you wanting to see more.
I am very much looking forward to future volumes of this series.

The art is okay. My biggest issue is that if speaking is such an issue why do the younger generation know a spoken language? Like it would be safer to just speak in sign(unless everything happened fairly recently).

Corrupted beasts of interminable danger roam the lands, scenting their prey, crushing their rivals, and succumbing to death only from foes whose strength and ferocity is as mythical as their own. Is humanity doomed to live in fear and squalor, or will it rise to the challenge of its own survival?
SILENCE v1 is a fun little adventure whose characters are pushed so far to the brink that they must risk forsaking the safety they've known all of their lives for a single glimpse of hope. An overeager young man questing to make something of himself (Saber), a childhood friend who equally aims to save her community (Spot), and an experienced fighter who has had enough of hiding from the world in times of crisis (Grey) must put their heads together if they're to lead their village through storm and sorrow toward a better tomorrow.
But it won't be easy. Is the far-off town of High-Fort as idyllic, and free of monsters, as the rumors say? Or is it just another autocratic stronghold in a post-apocalyptic world? Do the elders who run Saber and Spot's home village truly know of the dangers that lay beyond their cozy cave? Or is the outside world only made more ferocious for the uncertainty that circumscribes its dangers?
Lune might have the answers. When a scavenging hunt goes south, Saber and his friends encounter a woman decked out with survival gear and several bells. Why bells? Well, the beasts that roam the land are sensory sensitive. Smell, yes, but sound, in particular, drives them into a frenzy. (There's a reason why Saber's home, hidden from view, requires that everyone speak in sign language.) But this Lune woman is unafraid of facing down a massive boar, gutting it open, and ripping out its most curious (magical) artifacts. What does Lune know about survival that Saber doesn't?
SILENCE v1 forces its cast to query whether the anticipation of something new and different, for the sake of safety, will be worth the inevitable cost of failing to secure those worthy precedents for the most vulnerable among them. Finding a new home for the villagers is ideal, but what about the children? What about the newborn? Never needing to reset near-empty traps and shift hunting rounds amid poor environmental conditions is ideal, but what manner of autonomy lies in the unknown? Who governs the ungoverned, should their destination prove inadequate?
The author, Vornière, has produced an interesting title whose worldbuilding is clever but ultimately quite fragmented. Readers will enjoy the mix of mythological and apocalyptic storytelling, but they may also chafe at the abbreviated means through which the characters engage said storytelling (e.g., the creatures are fascinating and horrifying, but their origin is completely unknowable).
The book's manga-styled action involves plenty of swooping motions, aggressive attack lines, and wonderfully indifferent facial expressions in moments of critical danger. The book's small canvas size is slightly problematic in that two-page spreads or panels featuring Vorniere's impressive background detail often appear cluttered or muted. Vornière wields shading, contrast, and patterns to help characters stand out in busy scenes, but readers may still struggle to actually enjoy the artwork when the page size is so small.

En voilà un manga qui m’a beaucoup intrigué. J’étais très curieuse au vue du résumé et j’avais vraiment hâte de me plonger dedans. Ce premier tome était vraiment plus qu’intéressant mais j’ai encore plus hâte de découvrir la suite puisque ce tome n’est qu’au final un tome introductif. Il n’empêche que l’on ne s’ennuie pas une seule seconde dans ce premier tome. C’était une lecture très plaisante!

Une des choses qui m’a le plus intrigué dans cette histoire c’est le fait de ne pas pouvoir parler. J’ai trouvé ça hyper original mais surtout extrêmement frustrant. Ne pas pouvoir parler ça doit être tellement dur puisque c’est quelque chose d’inné finalement. Il y a beaucoup de mystères dans cet univers, beaucoup de zones d’ombres. On se pose énormément de questions. Mon cerveau a fumé tant je m’en posais d’ailleurs. J’ai beaucoup aimé le personnage de Lame. Je l’ai trouvé hyper courageux pour le coup. Il culpabilise énormément et va tout faire pour pouvoir se racheter. Il va même faire une découverte qui va changer le destin du village entier.. J’ai vraiment accroché avec lui, c’est un personnage hyper intéressant à suivre pour le coup. J’ai hâte d’en apprendre encore plus à son sujet, je sens que la suite va beaucoup me plaire. Et surtout, je sens qu’il y a encore des tonnes de choses à découvrir!

A French manga of all things. It's a dystopian future where the sun no longer shines. Snow is everywhere and resources are scarce, plus the countryside is filled with monsters. Everyone speaks in sign language so as to not attract the monsters. I didn't realize this for awhile though. The sign language is presented as regular word balloons and I just thought they were talking until I figured that out. So when they actually talk as opposed to using sign language I was typically confused because the art isn't always reflective of it. One of the group meets a woman that is able to easily defeat a monster with some kind of stew that turns her into a monster. The group decides to follow her to a monastery where they will be safe and that's where this first volume ends.
It's a solid first volume and I'll probably read the next one when it gets translated. These Kana translations are weird though. The pages read left to right. The panels though read like a typical manga, right to left. Every time I get one of these I get confused until I figure that out as there is no indication in the book of how that works. It's the most confusing scenario they could have come up with and I really wish they'd stop it.

Je ne savais pas trop à quoi m’attendre avec ce manga 🤔 ! Ce concept était une histoire que j’avais imaginée quand j’étais petite, c’est drôle. Cela m’a intrigué ! Surtout que je suivais Yoann sur Instagram avant que son manga ne sorte et j’étais emballée à l’idée qu’un mangaka français de plus soit publié ! Donc, Silence figurait dans ma wishlist depuis un bout de temps. Un ami m’a offert le tome 2 en pensant que j’avais déjà le tome 1, et ce fut pour moi l’occasion de commencer.

Quand j’ai commencé ma lecture, ce qui m’a sauté aux yeux, c’est le découpage des planches, la mise en page et les dessins. On voit clairement que cela a été réalisé par quelqu’un qui lit et aime le monde des mangas. Il y a un découpage très innovant, je trouve. Couplé avec le style de Yoann, qui est unique et très reconnaissable.
C’est un très bon premier tome, les enjeux sont bien installés dès le début. On comprend rapidement qui sont les personnages et quel est leur caractère. Quelques intrigues se mettent en place, intéressant… 👀👌

Silence is a pseudo manga, since well, it's French. Perhaps for me this was more like a comic than manga. The world is in turmoil, a post-apocalyptic one with monsters and humans (that are dying). The main character is Saber and his village is cut off the world. The monsters hunt thanks to sound and thus the people need to use sign language. A woman named Lune arrives in the village though and it seems the only way to fight the monsters is becoming one. Saber wants this so he can save everyone. The setting is great, really. I liked the world building a lot and how the former village was burnt down just like that. It's still hard to say what happens, since it's just the beginning of the journey. Sadly so we don't get to know the characters well enough yet, which makes this slightly detached.
The art looks nice and different, which is understandable, since this isn't Japanese manga. There's a hint of Dragon Ball art-wise though. There are at least three parts in French, so there's going to be more happening in the future I take. The cover surely looks nice!

Post apocalyptic manga style comic. The setting feels very A Quiet Place inspired, though it's definitely a different world. The world is stuck in an eternal winter, that I read as being post-nuclear. There are giant, Fallout-esque monsters everywhere that navigate based on sound, so the people are largely mute and communicate in sign language. This actually took me a little time to figure out because the characters still use speech bubbles, though I'm not sure how the art could have made that more clear. The art is pretty good shonen standard, and there's enough mystery in the plot to keep a lot of readers going. I didn't get hooked this time, but I can easily see where action manga fans might be more engaged.

Du manga français avec ce premier tome d'une saga shônen qui a beaucoup de potentiel ! L'univers est original : le monde est devenu sombre et obscur, les humains vivent reclus et surtout, ils ne parlent qu'en langue des signes, car les monstres les repèrent à l'ouïe. Dans une petite communauté en difficulté, Lame va avoir l'occasion de faire ses preuves en sortant à l'extérieur, mais rien ne se passe comme prévu et c'est toute la communauté qui va devoir remettre en cause son mode de vie. Je n'en dirai pas plus, mais ce sera le départ d'une aventure haletante, de combats prenants et de découverte de ce nouveau monde. L'autre originalité de cette saga est de mettre en avant des monstres inspirés du folklore européen au lieu des yokai traditionnels. Bref, une saga prometteuse !

Les habitants communiquent en langue de signes et s'efforcent d'être autosuffisants, car au moindre bruit, les monstres débarquent. Mais lorsque leur meilleur chasseur meurt, leurs chances chutent. Est-il plus judicieux de rester à l'abri et mourir de faim ou de sortir dans le noir et faire face à l'inconnu ? Manga entraînant où les monstres sont d'inspiration folklorique française. On a faim du tome 2 !

un manga qui a sû me donner envie dès son premier chapitre lu en format extrait. Un univers bien travaillé on ressent que même si là série est courte elle devrait être suffisante. À la fin de la lecture du manga je me suis senti frustré de ne pas avoir la suite. Les dessins sont dingues on s'attache aux personnages qui sont déjà aussi très bien travaillés bref rien de négatif que du positif pour ce titre.

Un très bon départ pour ce shonen ! Les dessins sont excellents, l'introduction à ce monde rempli de monstres réussie et les premiers contacts avec les personnages principaux donnent envie de revenir !

Pretty fun story, (I like dystopian future stuffs) the art is not bad, it feels like basic manga art, nothing to wow anyone. I am looking forward to reading more but not in a rush to do so.

I liked the idea of having to speak sign language in a world where monsters can hear noise, however it is hard to translate sign language well in manga.

I was intrigued by the this one. The idea of being able to fight a monster after eating the organs appealed to me. The graphics were not as sharp as I'd like, a bit of colour would make it more appealing.I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a bit of graphic novel.

The bravest and most cunning amongst the group are chosen to venture outside to find food and other supplies, but they must do so in the quietest manner possible. On Saber's first trip outside, things go terribly wrong, but they meet a mysterious warrior with magical powers to fight the fearsome beasts, and who claims their salvation lies in leaving the church altogether.
I thought this manga was powerful and captivating. The illustrations were unique and had a more Van Gogh style of fluidity that made every page electric. I particularly enjoyed the integration of European mythological creatures as inspiration for the monsters Saber faces.
