I love these books! All of my children love these books! I am amazed at how they captivate everyone in my family. All of my kids want a hummingbird feeder now.
The illustrations and information in this book about hummingbirds helped me get it right when I wrote a story about a hummingbird and added traits and details in the text. The pictures are big and colorful and will appeal to children and the text is a large size.

Informational Non- Fiction review ELM 572 3-26-2015
In Kate Riggs, “Amazing Animals Hummingbirds” I enjoyed the non-fiction about hummingbirds. Hummingbirds are the smallest bird with about 300 different species living mostly in South America, but North and Central America too. They have about 1000 colorful feathers on their body and fly so fast they make a humming sound with their wings. They weigh anywhere from “less than a penny” to as much as “six sheets of paper.” Hummingbirds eat insects and sweet nectar from flowers with their long tongue to give them energy to fly all day. They lay about two eggs and the female sits on them until they hatch. The female feeds the little ones until they fly out of the nest around one month. Hummingbird’s lives close to each other, but not as families. They can fly up, down, back, forward, and hover all day. They are my favorite bird. I enjoy feeding and watching them at my bird feeders from the early spring to late fall. This book is a good read for second, third, fourth and fifth graders. I would also use this book in guided reading in first grade and kindergarten.
1. Hummingbirds only live in the Americas 2. Hummingbirds fly so fast (50-200 flaps per second) that their wings make a humming sound. That's how they got their name 3. The smallest ones weigh less than a penny, while the biggest ones weigh as much as six sheets of paper 4. They are the only birds that can fly in any direction. 5. Living until four to six years, hummingbirds eat insects and nectars.
This book tells all kinds of interesting facts about hummingbirds, from their size to talking about migration. It also has real pictures of hummingbirds throughout the book. The very last page has a few fun facts about hummingbirds. I enjoyed this book and really liked the pictures. This would be good to use in a classroom when talking about hummingbirds and also when comparing birds, you could use this book and other books to compare and contrast different types of birds.
We have a lot of hummingbirds visit our house in the spring and summer, so my son was very excited to check out this book. The colored photos in this book are FABULOUS! It was interesting to learn about different types of hummingbirds as we were reading.
This is another great non-fiction book for children. Full of colorful real life pictures and fun facts about hummingbirds. It would be a great addition for the children in the classroom who are interested in learning more.
