David Catrow's wonderful illustrations are the highlight of this collection of three short stories featuring Compère Lapin. The stories have an entertaining Cajun patois in the dialogue and depict tricky Lapin in the process of fooling or getting fooled.
The introduction offers some background on the origins of the stories and is short enough to keep a child's attention. And the stories are very engaging and fun to read aloud. We read one each night, savoring the humor and the fantastic details in the pictures. We really enjoyed reading this book together.
interesting quote:
"But the truth is, as long as there's fools to be fooled, somebody's going to come along and do the fooling." (p. 58)

Love, love all three of these Lapin stories.
They're a little on the long side for reading out loud, but I cut down "Why Lapin's Tail is Short" enough to do it as a prose piece for Speech & Debate (so probably 7.5 minutes) without losing very much.

The stories are humorous, as are David Catrow's illustrations, but the stories are just too long for a storytime read-aloud, darn it.
