This book reminds me of Steven Brust's Vlad Taltos. Vlad Taltos, being a witch, has a kind of small flying reptile from the Jhereg species named Loiosh acting as his familiar, and Brimmer's Bruce is stuck with a sentient car with a dragon spirit as a almost-familiar-kind-of-companion named Vlad. Brust Bruce is often pictured trading banter with his Car, but not as often as Vlad Taltos the assassin witch with his Jhereg familiar, maybe because Vlad the Dragon Car is not involved as much as Loiosh in the main character's missions. On one side we have Vlad the Dragon Car is just a tiny bit more than a wisecracking transport and Loiosh the Jhereg is a lot more than a wisecracking witchcraft helper on the other side. Again, due to their involvement in main characters mission.
Maybe it's a common thing to see main characters wisecracking with their companions of another species who wisecrack back, just look at Kevin Hearne's Atticus the Druid with a talking dog, or how famous Han Solo's "Never tell me the odd," moments.
Just finished reading Shifters, and I have to say it's great from cover to cover. We get more insight into the mind of the Ninja with a mouth, and he's quite human. The action reminded me of a cross between Underworld and a Bruce Lee movie, so strap in tight!
It's also pretty clear this is not a nice world - evident when the main plot becomes apparent. Looking forward to the next one!
