Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was a Scottish writer and physician. He created the character Sherlock Holmes in 1887 for A Study in Scarlet, the first of four novels and fifty-six short stories about Holmes and Dr. Watson. The Sherlock Holmes stories are milestones in the field of crime fiction.

Doyle was a prolific writer. In addition to the Holmes stories, his works include fantasy and science fiction stories about Professor Challenger, and humorous stories about the Napoleonic soldier Brigadier Gerard, as well as plays, romances, poetry, non-fiction, and historical novels. One of Doyle's early short stories, "J. Habakuk Jephson's Statement" (1884), helped to popularise the mystery of the brigantine Mary Celeste, found drifting at sea with no crew member aboard.

I don't think I have to recommend Sherlock Holmes. In fact, this Portuguese version is my study book. I am learning Portuguese. What could be more enjoyable than to discover Sherlock Holmes in Portuguese. I have read the Hound of Baskerville as a teenager; I was thrilled, fully imbued with the description of the scary scenes. I am no longer a teenager, but Arthur Conan Doyle still retains his appeal. The scenes descriptions raise the mood. The dialogues, especially Holmes inquisitive interrogations of his clients lead straight away into Holmes special deductive powers. So the Adventures are a lovely way to read the fascinating deductions and clever discoveries hidden to Dr Watson who is amazed like us. To be read again. I read it in French when I knew no English, then in English, and now as an exercise in acquiring a new language, in Portuguese. I was thrilled, I was charmed by the dated, but still fresh, style of English. In Portuguese, I discover the richness of the vocabulary which is an enormous help in my learning. A good collection? Of course! Elementary my dear Watson!

Sherlock Holmes's character has absolutely nothing to do with the television's and movies' depictions and adaptions.
Extremely fun read.
