AD 1044. All eyes are on the marriage of Beatrix de Hautville to Armand de Mortain. The union could calm a tense political situation in a young, illegitimate nobleman called William is vying for the ducal throne, and making plenty of enemies along the way. One of these is Beatrix’s elder brother, Serlo, and it is hoped the joining of the two families will cool his anger. Halfdan and the wolves of Odin are bound for stormy political seas. Will they be able to navigate the currents, or will they be drawn into a brutal family feud? Packed with political machinations in the pursuit of power, this adventure is perfect for fans of Giles Kristian.
Simon lives with his wife and children and a menagerie of animals in rural North Yorkshire, where he sits in an office, wired on coffee and digestive biscuits, and attempts to spin engrossing tales out of strands of imagination while his children drive toys across his desk and two dogs howl as they try to share a brain cell.
A born and bred Yorkshireman with a love of country, history and architecture, Simon spends most of his rare free time travelling around ancient sites, writing, researching the ancient world and reading voraciously.
Following an arcane and eclectic career path that wound through everything from sheep to Microsoft networks and from paint to car sales, Simon wrote Marius’ Mules and, with help and support, made a success of it. Now, with in excess of 20 novels under his belt, Simon writes full time and is represented by MMB Creative literary agents.
Simon writes Roman military novels in the form of the bestselling Marius’ Mules series based on Julius Caesar’s campaigns, Roman thrillers in the Praetorian series, set during the troubled reign of Commodus, medieval adventures in the Ottoman Cycle, following a young Greek thief around the 15th century world, and a series of Historical Fantasy novels with a Roman flavour, called the Tales of the Empire. Another engaging Viking adventure from Simon Turney, this time focusing on Normandy and including the appearance of William of Normandy in his youth. This book focuses on Halfdan’s ship building mate as well as Halfdan himself and the conclusion to the novel means I eagerly await the final novels in the series.

REVIEW The master storyteller like that master shipwright Ulfr, has crafted another dragon-ship of a tale. Tense, dramatic, heart-pumping action keeps you focused, keeps you trusting in the song of the volva; the threads of the Norns transport you to the time and place. But, let's face it, any tale featuring a rather large albino berserker just has to be read for the sheer entertainment. Well done, Simon. 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I'm gutted, I have finished the book already. I have to wait for the next one. This is how I know how good a book is. A great bunch of characters who I really care about, a story that races along, battles and some real people from history. This book we meet a young William the conqueror, it's nice to learn some real history. As I said earlier, I can't wait for the next. 5 out of 5.
A well plotted, action packed and gripping historical fiction that kept me turnin pages. The historical background is well researched and vivid, the characters fleshed out, and the tightly knitted plot flows Entertaining and well written Highly recommended. Many thanks to the publisher for this ARC, all opinions are mine
Once again from start to end the epic adventure continues. Every page keeps you wanting more, but like I said in the last review, I'm not normally a big fan of side stories but they have been done so well in these books that it fits perfectly and it helps that the different characters have been so interesting.
This is an excellent continuation of the Saga (Wolves around the Throne) finally returning to the sea with Fenton the horizon. I can not wait for the next book to come out.
Brilliant 4th book, great story we'll written love the characters and their journey. Can't wait for number 5. Slightly at a loss what to read next. I have been thoroughly engrossed.
This is the 4th book that I've read in a small amount of time. All have been excellent and a joy to read. The people in this historical fiction are believable and fun. I'm looking forward to reading book 5 and also to adding SJA Turney to my left of favorite Writers.
