Callie Demasi just started her senior year at Crystalport High and her life couldn't be any more ordinary. Then the nightmares start, and a strange creature tries to attack her in her sleep. If that isn't bad enough, her body starts to do things she never imagined were possible; like hold fire in the palm of her hand. It seems that the only person who knows what's really happening to her is a ghost creature named Draven- if she can keep him from disappearing on her. It's not until after her best friend Zilla is kidnapped, and she meets the handsome and arrogant Cole, that Callie begins to put the pieces together. Will her newfound powers be strong enough to save the life of her BFF, or will they both be doomed to the same fate?
Trista Day is a married 35 year old mother of three with an obsession for collecting anything Alice in Wonderland and The Labyrinth. In between eating too much chocolate and watching The Fifth Element, she loves to read and write young adult/teen science fiction, fantasy and paranormal romance.
This story contains truly original lines, dialogue, scenarios, and characters. And even though it's mostly a YA paranormal novel, it also has romance, a little sci-fi, and even a touch of fantasy.
The characters…
The characters really came to life and felt like real life people. I was cheering for them, crying for them, yelling at them - just so many emotions.
You have the main character Callie who at times was just like your average teenager, other times smart and mature beyond her years, & other times I just wanted to slap her (sorry Callie!).
Then there's also Callie's circle of friends and her bff Zilla. I really liked her friends and everyone should have a bff like Zilla. She's one of those friends that you know will always be there for you, but at the same time also calls you out on your BS.
Oh & of course there are the hot guys to choose from.
The bad…
As with most debut novels there's some organization/structure issues, a few grammar errors, & at times the dialogue was a little choppy.
Even though it has some issues, there was nothing so bad that it took away from the story.

This book was awesome! I loved the characters, especially Draven, he was amazing. Callie was alright, she was a bit annoying, but she was cool. There were points when I wanted to slap the book, and points where I was anxious to turn to the next page already.
When it ended, I was upset, mostly because it was a Cliff Hanger! (And almost all of you guys who know me, you guys know how much I hate Cliff Hangers) I was so upset, I was sitting on my bed with my mouth hanging open. Soo, I finally turned the page and all I said was - YAY!!!
Trista Day is currently writing Book 2 (I honestly didn't know this was a series, let alone a trilogy) I am anxious to read the next book!!
Disclosure -I was gifted a copy of this book by Trista Day, the author, in exchange for my honest review.
This is the first book in what will be the Unforgiven series. Book Two is currently being written.
Callie is cute, a typical teenaged girl for the most part. She has her little posse of friends, including her BFF Zilla, Alyssa, & Jett. Zilla is dating the captain of the football team, Locke, Jett is currently surfing the net for his potential boyfriend, and Alyssa is the quieter of them all. Callie has been having some incredibly vivid dreams, waking up with marks on her skin. For some reason, she doesn’t go to her parents. Maybe her parents wouldn’t believe her? There is a distance between Callie and her mom; Callie explains that her mom always seems cold and distant.
When we first meet Callie’s “boyfriend”, Luke, I was rather appalled. Callie’s description of their relationship, the way she just accepts that he thinks they’re a couple and that she’s obligated to kiss him and go out on dates with him is truly disgusting. And yet the more I see/read things on the internet, the more this seems to be the acceptable norm. (Are you kidding me, girls? Listen…you are NOT bossy, you’re CEO material. You are WORTHY. You are SMART. You do NOT put up with this kind of crap because YOU DESERVE BETTER. When you accept you for you, accept that you are worthy of good things, then the right guy will come along and HE will be WORTHY of you. Until then, take losers like Luke and tell them to kiss off.)
Callie is attacked during home economics by some creature with purple eyes that attacks her legs and starts lapping at her blood. On her way to the nurse’s office, she catches Luke making out, hands everywhere, with Joanne, Callie’s school enemy. Luke tries to apologize…BY FORCING HIMSELF ON CALLIE, shoving her against a locker, trying to kiss her, etc. Dude…no. Callie slaps him and leaves a weird bright pink burn mark on his cheek. She tells him they are OVER and then is able to get to the nurse’s office.
Fast forward to the coffee shop, Callie is rude to the new guy working there as she places her order for her and her friends. Then she uses him to show Luke that she’s done with him (Luke) by kissing the guy (Cole). It gets kinda heavy and is more intense than Callie is expecting, but ends with Luke dragging Joanne out of the coffee shop quickly in a fury.
Fast forward again and Callie is at the beach for Winter Volleyball with her friends who are trying to cheer her up. Luke is there, Joanne is snickering and pointing, Zilla finds out that Luke has told everyone that Callie and he have had sex. Callie is livid at this lie and invites Luke back to her house so she can yell at him in private and tell him that they are through for the last time. Luke attacks her AGAIN, pinning her down, groping her, etc., it’s just not a good situation. Just as Callie starts to panic as she’s fighting him off and realizing that he is overpowering her, she discovers that her hand is on fire. She hits Luke with it and it burns him, she’s pushing him off and scorching him. What is going on? Why am I harping on this? It bothers me EXTREMELY to see these kinds of actions from guys and the sad acceptance from girls. I know that this is currently one of the main social problems, and Trista Day does a phenomenal job of writing it and making the reader gag with disgust. I hope that every teenage girl that reads this recognizes that it is WRONG and that they should follow what Callie does: dump that bastard.
Oh, and then…they go to the beach again, Luke, of course is there. His burns are healing up. He keeps smiling at Callie. Obviously, he’s an idiot and doesn’t comprehend the word, NO. But, they manage to come to a truce and he gets it, FINALLY. They’re hanging around together on the beach, Luke asks if he can join them, she says yes, and then he proceeds to flirt with Alyssa, WHO IS FLIRTING BACK, in front of Callie. Callie puts the kibosh on it and says it’s not cool to do that to her FRIEND when they’ve been broken up for all of 10 minutes. Alyssa glares at her and pouts. Seriously? You call this person your friend? What happened to the golden rule of not dating your closest friend’s ex aka no poaching from the used bin?
Ms. Day … you have a talent for capturing that crap that teenagers go through as they’re learning to set boundaries and getting older. Holy moly. I was scribbling furiously on my notepad for this review. All of the postings you see on the internet, all of the younger victims of rape, this whole rape culture the US seems to be dealing with at the moment is truly scary and that’s what these scenes brought to mind. Phew. Okay. Sorry end of my ranting.
If you haven’t guessed already, Ms. Day’s descriptions are well written. Callie is this interesting mixture of “on the verge of freaking out” and “accepting new things calmly.”
I loved her and Zilla’s relationship --- that is true friendship. They may argue/fight, but they apologize to one another and it’s accepted. They move on. They don’t hold grudges, they have each other’s backs. Callie & Zilla are lucky with one another. The story itself was a little slow to start as I wasn’t sure what was going to happen: moving from her dreams to some ghostly figure she sees to teenage daily ins and outs, etc. Once it picked up, it flew!
Obviously this is not our world completely, despite having items such as Zilla’s awesome car, Cole’s 1970 Chevelle SS that Callie drools over, coffee shops, high school, etc. Callie & Zilla have this “family crest” tattoo that’s just accepted as part of the norm, something you’re tattooed with when born, but it’s not wholly explained. It seems like even those with the tattoo don’t quite understand it, whereas the supernatural creatures do (the witch makes a comment on it). I mean, Callie doesn’t tell her parents about the ghostly guy/Unforgiven Draven or the orb or the monster attacks fearing that they won’t believe her and think she’s crazy. She now lives in a world of vampires and monsters and has powers, but she doesn’t question the meaning of the tattoo more openly?
I had this huge paragraph here talking about Callie & Cole, but decided it would ruin it. So….read the book instead!
So! Good plot, good story, good laying of groundwork, interesting characters with stories yet to be explored fully, totally captures the average teenager mindset, and one I wanted to keep reading. There are some grammatical errors, but they are few and far between. (Wearily instead of warily, Were instead of We’re, disproval instead of disapproval).
I will (im)patiently await Book Two and the rest of this series. I am so looking forward to seeing how Callie & Cole end up, if she can help Draven, if she learns more about these powers that she and Zilla have, especially after her mother’s comment. Thanatos is going to be a jerk and a major player, I’m sure as he’s plotting already. Lost cities, how to cure an Unforgiven, vampires and pologs, spells and magical abilities, I’m ready!
The cover and blurb caught my attention immediately with this book and I had a feeling I was going to thoroughly enjoy it... I was soo right!
This book was amazing, really! It follows the story of Cassie our heroine, her loving father, cold mother, amazing best friend and possibly the world's worst excuse for a boyfriend (To be quite frank he's a bit of a d**k). We follow Callie delving into a world she finds is not her own when she begins to have the strangest dreams. Waking up in immense pain, covered in bruises, naturally she wonders what's going on. Keeping it to her herself, our Callie endures daily torture as she tries to unravel what is happening to her. But it soon starts to step up a gear when floating orbs start attacking her and a ghostly boy start appearing. Did I mention the ghost guy is HOT? No? Well he is... And the rest you'll have to find out yourself ;)
Ghost guy (Draven) is on a personal mission to save Callie from a fate he doesn't even understand himself. He doesn't understand why but he knew he had to save her, a choice Callie will be eternally grateful for. Draven sticks around to protect Callie and the more he's around her, the stronger her feelings for him become. Just a small problem - Cole the new guy at Callies' gangs local hang out. Now not only is she battling evil creatures out for her blood, a ridiculous ex boyfriend who is determined to get under her skin, but she's also trying to unravel her feelings for these two amazing guys.
One of the many things I enjoyed about this book was Callies relationship with her best friend Zilla. In many paranormal/YA/NA books the best friend is left out of the loop and has no idea what is happening and as a result, gets stroppy. Not the case here. Callie and Zilla have such a strong bond that they call each other blood sisters and by standing by each other, they also help themselves too. The bond they share, I would say is a highlight of this book and a testament to the Trista's writing that she is able to bring through such emotions to the reader.
This book had sad moments where I found myself on the brink of tears, happy moments were I was left beaming like an idiot and some sweet romantic bits. I loved the ending and I'm thoroughly looking forward to the next part in this series.
I enjoyed reading Fire Burns by Trista Day. Her unique way of writing a book kept me on the edge of my seat and wanting more. The flow of the book is really good. There’s always something happening, no slow or boring periods. I liked the flow of the wording, for example the authoress used words that teens don’t usually use like “abysmally”. The main character Callie had me wondering, rooting for her, and shaking my head in certain situations. Callie is strong willed. Like most teen agers she’s quick to think everything is about her or quick to judge. Her revelation with Zilla about powers was a sincere connection that bonded the friendship. Callies character strengthens through the story. At times she is confused but then is quick to bounce back.
I fell in lust for Cole’s character. Cole stole my heat when I read he doesn’t like to eat onions. And his fave food is pizza. He’s my inner 19 year olds ultimate crush. He reads and knows how to romance a girl on a first date. I would have liked to have read more about Coles fighting abilities. How did he get them out of that situation?
I was kind of hesitant with Drakes character. I didn’t like the way Drake would keep information from Callie. Information seems to be with held in various parts of the story, with characters saying they’ll talk about it later, but they almost always forget to get back to that important detail until it’s almost too late.
I liked the modern references to tv shows and actors.
The quad love triangle was a bit much, but I can see why the authoress penned it that way.
Zilla’s cliff hanger left me wondering. If it took three months to get back then would Zilla have been ok?
Okay so a lot of not so good things happen in this story and a lot of good things happen in this story this is just one of those one's that you'll just have to read. It had tons of humor and sad parts of course and in the end a love story that's mixed in it somewhere. lol . I'm really trying not to give to much of the story away. This Author really did a great job with the hole outcome of the story. I really enjoyed it and I'm hoping that the next person enjoys it as much as I did. I so can't wait for the second book I didn't really get a hint at a few chapters of the next one :( well kinda it did give me some type of cliffhanger and I do have a lot of thoughts on certain things in the story that might happen. Plus side I'm hoping to read about the realm that Thantos is in yes the bad guy. I was very surprised at how this turned out! It for sure had me wondering if I should be Team Cole or Team Draven. I'm really shooting for Team Cole, he is after all the one Callie is kinda bonded to now. That is another thing sorry I really don't want to give any spoilers away it's just some thing you'll have to read and fine out, lol. But I will tell you this, I couldn't put it down and lately that's hard for me to do with work and all this craziness in my personal life I did find time for this and I'm really happy that I did.
I did receive this book for free from the Author for an honest review.
From the Prologue to the Epilogue this book was quite amazing! Peaking my interest in the beginning with questions, twists around every corner and Callie's heroic character.
The characters were pretty great throughout the story, bonding moments and gifted as well. There were a number of times I felt like Callie could be so much more if only she would stop for a second to think before acting. Though if she had the story wouldn't be what it is which was pretty awesome. The highlight of the story for me was when Callie and Zilla's bond grew, being best friends and blood sisters was just not enough for them. Cole had me intrigued and guessing, while Draven had me swooning and humbled by his experience. Luke didn't effect me so much as his character was arrogant and insulting as book boyfriends go. **Draven has my vote in this story for book boyfriends!**
The story was pretty awesome packing a few punches - with danger lurking. So much packed within the pages my attention was always held in check. There are still a few unanswered questions though I'm sure they will reveal themselves in Trista Day's next book in this unbelievable series.
This book was given to me by the author for an honest review.
I'm a huge fan of the paranormal genre and thats why I can't resist any book which has such interesting blurbs.Sometimes I'm glad I took the risk and sometimes I am dissapointed. This book definitely comes in the former category. It was an interesting story with a lot of great twists.I loved reading it and anticipating about what would happen next.It kept me interested with a lot of suspense. The characters were fun and unique in their own ways.A lot of emotions were felt while reading this book, which I think is a sign of a great author. The thing I really liked was that the action started right away and the author did not drag the story to make it longer. It was a really great book and I think people should give it a try.Fire BurnsTrista Day
So I've read a LOT of vampire..well..junk lately, so when I first read the word "vampire" in this book I let out an inward groan. But I kept going. The authors ability to weave words kept me compelled, and I found myself staying up til two in the morning just to see how it ended and wasn't disappointed. Although I've never really liked love triangles, I have to say this is the most conflicted I've ever been on who I think the main character should be with. At first I was rooting for Draven then I was rooting for Cole, and then, even after everything that happened--and I won't say anything else cause I don't want to spoil it--I was still really conflicted. Cole. Draven. Cole. Draven. Guess I'll have to just patiently wait for the sequel.
First I would like to thank the author Trista Day for giving me this book for an honest review. I really enjoyed this book, the story is good and there is always something happening. Trista really captured the teenage way of thinking. The world building was great and interesting characters which can be more developed in future books. There was some grammar issues, but not enough to make me upset with the editing of the book. Callie upset me at times but she easily redeemed herself. Luke is a class A jerk, and no female deserves to be treated that way. I love the relationship between Zilla and Callie, that is what true friendship is all about. I look forward to reading the next book.
I don't really know what to say about this book because it was so amazing. The way Trista Day put this together was incredible. I never thought I could love something so much and still be able to guess bits and pieces of it. When I finished the book I had mixed feelings, I was happy that I was right about Callie and Draven but sad the it had ended also it left things unexplained but then I found out that it was book one in a series and got so excited for the second book.
i was hooked on this book. i did like the end cause i was left wanting more .. im looking forward to what is next.. i like that cassie could hold fie in her plam of her hand i like the gosht creature draven .. cassie and luke and a werid kind of realtionship between them .. i loved cole bad boy image. i did like that he had some many secrect.
"**I recieved a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review** This book kept me interested, frustrated, yes with just that alone kept me reading I wanted to know more. So many times you just want to shake the book and hope some sense would fall in her head. The characters were everything i felt like i was there, i could feel every emotion. But I can't wait till book two.
Another really mixed bag for me, in one way this was really good but just failed in others.

What I thought
The premise for this was awesome, it was dark and twisted, everything I love in a paranormal. But for me it just fell a little flat. A few things just made no sense to me at all, like when Callie finds out more about her mum why did she not go and talk to her? I mean really talk to her? Her mother could have been amazing source of info!! It reminded me of a TV show or movie. You know the ones, where you sit back and ask wtf, where are the parents?? Also the insta love, I didn’t understand it in this case, I felt no real connection between Callie and Cole. There were some more things that bothered me but I am not going in to them all because well then it would seem like I hated this book and I really didn’t at all.
This writer has huge potential, her ideas are amazing and I love a fresh paranormal twist, the world building was sensational, I felt like I was there when it was all going down. The pacing was well done, there were no really boring parts it seemed like something was always happening or about to happen I am hooked now and will be reading the rest of the series.
So I liked this books heroine and her "powers". I felt like there were some great creative ideas from the author that I can honestly say I have never read about in a book before (in a good way! I won't spoil it). But there were a few things that turned me off of this read. In the beginning there were a few times I literally had to read a sentence a few times over out loud to figure out what she was saying (bad sentence setup or something I suppose). Also, I felt like some of the character interactions made no sense from a real world perspective (if someone kills something/someone you love then you would tell them to fuck off and not allow them near you again, for instance), and it pulled me out of the story sometimes when one of these interactions would happen. Also, one character in particular (Zilla) felt like she would have a mood swing in a heartbeat sometimes...it didn't feel quite right how fast the transitions happened.
I will definitely keep an eye on this author, she has the foundations of a potential great! Can't wait to see where she goes next!
All of the above are only my opinions, I do not claim to be an expert, just a reader :) Also, all of the above are things that I can see being easily fixed in the future to make a good story into an amazing (part 2) story!

I want to start off by saying I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Overall I liked the book, however I did have some minor problems with it. The tense was inconsistent, especially at the beginning of the book, which threw me at times because I wasn't quite sure of the timeframe of events. The relationship between Callie and Luke was definitely weird and I wanted to scream at Callie to just dump him earlier in the story. Also I thought Luke was a tad too pushy, same goes for Cole... I kind of wanted to scream at both those guys to take a hint. I also got a deja vu thing with something that Cole said during the story that I am pretty sure Luke had said earlier (something to the effect of giving him another chance).. the characters were just a little too similar and I didn't like either of them, at all. Sorry, I guess I just prefer Draven for Callie. Speaking of Draven, I really liked him as a character and wanted to know more. Overall I do want to know more about everything, so I will most likely read the next one in the series.
I would definitely recommend this book to others who like paranormal romance books.
Sure this book has vampires, witches, magic etc. but it is so much more than that. This author has found a way to present some of the same subject matter in a completely different way. It starts a bit slow but when it gets going it doesn't let you up for mercy until the very end. I am preparing to get the next installment as I write this review. The only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars was because there are many unanswered questions but I have no doubt that they will be answered in the next book. I highly recommend this series.
The story was well written and had an interesting plot. It was unique and contained quite a lot of mystery. Just when you think you've figured it out something new happens. There are still so many questions. Looking forward to the next book.
