In this volume collecting the final 8 issues of the hit miniseries, the JLA splinter team burrows deeper into the inner circle of an alien drug cartel…that is, until their cover is blown! Meanwhile, in the farthest reaches of the galaxy, a new villain has risen from the Source Wall. Her name is Eve, and the only thing she's looking to create is the destruction of the Elite . . . and the world!
Why does DC do this? Ruin a good idea with incomprehensible drivel. Justice League Elite could have been really good but was felled by some terrible antagonists, the overdone return of a good antagonist, and just utter confusion. Too many characters acted out of character and the fact that there have been so few appearances of this team since. Doug Mahnke's art is still very good, especially Dawn and Oliver. Overall, a sad misfire.
The entire Elite series can be summed up as a really interesting idea and characters, that was never given the chance to grow. The entire series is to short and underdeveloped. Its first two plots are condensed into single issue stories that try and force what could easily have been 4-5 issues into 30-40 pages. The first volume was gearing up for something good but then in the second volume it already starts packing up.
Several members of the Justice League were tired of being reactive to threats to the human race. They wanted to be proactive instead. So they, along with others that weren't quite so noble, combined to make the Justice League Elite. But they are being eaten away from within. Someone is a traitor, and someone else isn't quite who they say they are. Will the JLE survive the trouble from within?
My Thoughts: I was in the mood for more graphic novels and found this one while I was searching. Of course, my library didn't have the first volume, but that never seems to stop me. I wasn't really sure what to expect of this one, but it had Green Arrow (my favorite superhero) so I knew I'd enjoy it for that, if nothing else. And I did end up enjoying it quite a bit. I was only familiar with a couple of the characters before I'd read this one - Flash and Green Arrow. But many of the other characters - particularly Manitou Raven - were ones that I found myself really enjoying learning about. I'm going to see if my library system has the first book so I can check it out, as well as see if there are more books in that series. But I love reading anything DC related, so it shouldn't be a surprise that I've enjoyed it.
The Justice League Elite fizzle out in their second and final graphic novel collection. With conspiracies, secrets, and mistrust abound, the JLE takes on an undercover mission to shut down an alien drug trade. Making matters worse is the unexpected arrival of the Justice Society, leading to a violent confrontation on the streets of Chicago. Add in the Source Wall and the return of Manchester Black, and not even the Justice League may be able to help the Elite save London. Though the idea of a black-ops League is intriguing, Joe Kelly, Doug Mahnke, and Tom Nguyen are handcuffed with a disheveled line-up and stagnant characterization. Coldcast is cliche, Arrow is adulterous, Batgirl is Kasumi, and Flash has to change costumes with each lineup. Even the last-second reveal of Manchester Black feels like a hail-mary plot to recapture the initial magic of the Elite. Fans of second-tier characters and the bad-boy League will get an enjoyable conclusion from this volume. However, it remains clear that the Elite was but a minor League team.
Pretty weak book this. Cheap copy of the Authority, but with none of the mojo that made that such a great series. This book is a bit of a mess, full of interesting ideas but just put on the page half baked. I struggled to know what was going on half the time...the story could have been told in half the page count, and there were too many characters struggling for 'air time' The art was ok, but the many fight and group scenes were a bit too 'busy' for me, layouts too unstructured. There is a lot worse out there, but I just found this a waste of time really
The big twist felt weird and confusing. I'm still not really sure what happened.
Also, they seemed to introduce a new big, bad partway through the book, largely for placeholder purposes. And his whole weird, manic, violent cosmic thing did not seem to fit for me.
