Intoxicated, depressed, cynical and alone. Sounds like an ending rather than a beginning and Angelique Le'Count thought so too. Until rash thinking sends him in pursuit of his ex girlfriend and spirals him into a chain of events that all point to disaster. Can he remember how to be the man he once was, battle his inner demons, and make the sacrifices to stop it? Considering that there are angry werewolves, crazed demons and snippy spirits, it would seem the world is giving Angelique a run for his money. But this is just the beginning of an Otherworldly Prophecy...
N. A. Wetzel is from a small town in North Carolina, and is the author of many stand-alone titles, and the Otherworldly Prophecies book series. She has always enjoyed writing YA and NA novels of all genres and probably always will.
**From the author**
I am the parent of two precious princesses, one charming son, and a furry, 85 lbs cuddle monster, which all rule my heart and home. I am the soul mate to the one I searched for all my life, slave to the written word, and lover of the dark and robust brew, coffee.
There isn't a whole lot that I can say about myself without it turning into another novel.
I received a copy of Starving Blades from the author in exchange for an honest review. I agreed to review it after reading the sample chapters on Amazon and it was promising, it really was; guess that’s why it pains to give it only 2 Stars. But I’ll explain why the low rating and I’m aware that I’m in the minority with my rating as well that the author did some more edits on the book while I was reading it.
I’m a big fan of paranormal books; therefore, I’m a bit more critical and expect certain things. To keep it simple the book needs to hook me and needs to have a straight plot line; it needs to be original written in a way that I don’t get bored; no storytelling that takes out the suspense of the story itself; the reading needs to be flawless and a good reading pace it important to me.
The story of Angel Le Count was different from what I’ve read so far and that’s why I wanted to read it but after the first 2 chapters the story took a turn and it bored me –sorry- to read it. It was more like a story telling than his story. I expected more suspense; more struggle from his side, more inside into his complex character what it wasn’t the case. I read more things about the other character, more unnecessary details than what is really important in the story. It distracted me from the actual story.
What also threw me off was the flow of the story; the throwbacks sometimes didn’t work to the stories benefit and I lost track of the actual story. One big thing for me was the editing. I usual try to ignore grammar or sentence structure but it was a bit off. I had to reread certain sentences to figure out the meaning or what the author did mean.
Overall the story had potential. I liked the idea of the whole plot and Angel’s war spirit Sarre I liked but wished to read more about her. The demons in the story were interesting and after I talked with the author I know now that book 1 was meant as an introduction for the following books but the blurb didn’t give this away and I really expected something totally different.
Maybe you will totally disagree with my review but I promised an honest review and that’s what I just wrote. I truly believe with some more editing the story will easily boost to a 4star rating.
**I was given an ARC copy from the author in exchange for an honest review of the story**
Angel has problems, not the least of which is being a 2400 year old half-angel trying to make it in the modern world. His most recent problem isn't slaying demons, which is his purpose in life. No, his most recent troubles center around his girlfriend, or rather, ex girlfriend. His drinking has driven her off. Why does he drink so much? The burden of keeping his true nature to himself is one reason, but there's also the little issue of being tied to a disembodied War Spirit named Sarre for the remainder of his mortal life. With a sarcastic ghost speaking in his ear, is it any wonder he tried to drink her away? Angel, miserable and alone, makes it his mission in life to get the girl back, but in doing so, he'll be thrown in the middle of a nest of demons, a horny werewolf, and some nasty full-bred angels that aren't always forthcoming.
The author has some good ideas in this novel. Angel is a decent protagonist: unsure of himself, not infallible, has his reasons for doing things. It's told in the first person and some of his inner monologue is laugh out loud funny. The real highlight of the book, however is the snarky and crass War Spirit Sarre. She means well (most times) but she can be downright nasty. Can't blame her considering she's been disembodied for thousands of years. The interaction between the two is the centerpiece for some of the best scenes in the book. The demon Ashley and the every horny werewolf Colovan get honorable mention for their colorful personality traits. The author also put some good thought into the angelic 'council' and its hierarchy.
Overall, the story had its fun moments and introduced the lore to flesh things out as well as leaving things open for Wetzel to develop the characters further.
Starving Blades is one of those books that you know from the beginning that you will want more of. Natasha Wetzel is the author to look for in the future. With her very descriptive characters I actually felt like I could picture each one of them, whether they were demons, angels, werewolves or her main character Angelique/Angel. He is a half breed angel/human who is tormented by a lost love and drowning his sorrows in a bottle. With a war spirit/ghost named Sarre who is hot-tempered, and funny, I enjoyed very much her annoying behavior, sulking at times and I hope there is another book that explores their relationship more.
As we delve into the tortured mind of the alcoholic Angel, to the surprising battle and relationships that arise between all of the characters in an otherworldly manner, you will find yourself savoring the last few chapters as I did. Relating to each personality whether good or evil the author makes you feel for both sides of this age old battle against demons and angels.
I would recommend this dark, witty, and soulful book full of great characters and a prophecy that must be fulfilled or all will be lost. She will take you into the minds of her characters and you will be happy to be there. Thank-you for a great read Natasha.
Alright now I will say I have argued with myself over this book’s review for a few days… This book starts off slow with Angelique (Angel) LeCount, a half breed angel is wallowing in his own pity in his apartment going on and on about missing his girlfriend and then we meet Sarre(I do so liked this war spirit..lol) Angel gets a bright idea to go hunt down his ex-girlfriend and find her and try to talk her into coming back to him….. However when he finds her, he learns a secret that he never expected… shortly after that he is sent on a mission that will ultimately save the world and with Kira(the ex gf) family of demons and a shift shaman (from my understanding, these are much like werewolves) named Convel (Who I think has more than a crush on Natasha but that is a different story I am hoping to explore in book two) . Angel goes through a lot of struggles including but not limited to battling his alcoholism and winning back Kira’s heart… The ending however threw me for a LOOP!!! Oh wow I thought I was going to get in trouble cause I shrieked and began talking to myself as I read…(mind you I was blogging, sitting in a McDonald’s waiting on it to be time to walk to pick up my little ones from school). I loved reading this story, getting to know Angel, Kira, Sarre, Natasha, Convel, Ashley, Draven, ….. Ezekiel however….. I don’t really like him and his actions...or lack thereof while Natasha was being torn to bits by Emeri kind of made me weary of him… When Leucreado showed up at the end I was for sure I was going to have a sour taste in my mouth for the ending of the book…. But I was happily wrong and was pleased with the finishing up of this book.
There were some editing flaws however that drew my attention away from the story. Places where it looked like the editor had rushed through and missed some, or possibly simply just used MS Word to spell check and since the errors weren’t with spelling per say, it was things like the S in She would be at the end of the previous word and the word SUPPOSED to be SHE would be he. This book could use a good once over by an editor to clean it up a bit. Before I give you my rating I will say that I liked this book so much that I bought the second book in this series before I even finished reading this one! I will be reviewing that one on my blog as soon as it gets back to the top of my TBR list!!
I fought with myself about this rating and I want to give it 5 shields… but because there are so many editing flaws that drew my attention, I am forced to give it 4 shields.
Starving Blades is the first book in Author Natasha Wetzel's series Otherworldly Prophecies, telling the tale of Angelique "Angel" Le'Count; a half-blood angel who carries out the work of God by doing battle with the many foes before him...or, at least, he used to.
Angel has fallen into despair after the abrupt departure of his girlfriend Kira. He has turned to the bottle to ease his woes, favoring vodka over actual resolution. He has lived for centuries, but nothing prepared him for a broken heart, not even his War Spirit Sarre who was part of the problem. After six months he becomes fed up with his deteriorating life and goes to find Kira in hopes of winning her back.
What he encounters was much more than he bargained for.
I don't want to give too much away from this book, because there is so much in it that deserves to be discovered. Natasha Wetzel's style of writing is a unique one, and brilliant beyond most others. Her characters are fascinating and relatable on different levels, even if a few are maniacs who are obsessed with cookies. She creates a world where mankind is just a roommate to all the other creatures/beings that are out there. Angels, Demons, Half-Breeds, Were-Animals (or "Shift Shaman") and possibly so much more. The details are so intricate and expansive your head might spin at first, but with Natasha's writing style you very quickly catch on and grow eager to learn more of this new world full of fascinating characters and interesting storylines.
Angel is a very deep character, cynical to a fault, trying to redeem his alcoholic ways in order to win back the love of his very long life, he is definitely a main character worth following. You end up caring for this character more than you expected early on. I personally felt bad for him throughout the first half of the novel, when everything was just in shambles around him and he was fighting desperately to piece it all back together. I rooted for him, and I was not disappointed with how the book ended.
Deeply philosophical, excellently executed, and terrifically written, Starving Blades is destined to go places!
The author gave me an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review :)
This book started with a slow pace and I have to say I dont really like them but as I kept reading I found myself unable to put the book down. For some reason I had to knew how the hero was doing and without noticing his pain and problems became mine as well. I just couldnt leave him to face his problems alone.
Angel is a Nephilim, a 2400 year old half-angel, whose life in the mortals realm isnt easy. Times had changed and trying to adapt himself to the modern world isnt what he is used to. He became an alcoholic but the truth is that you cant blame the poor soul for drowning his worries, problems and sorrow with the drink. If you had to hide your true self from everyone while also being attached to a war spirit for the rest of you mortal days, well, I guess you would have some issues to. The problem is that his drinking issue is just making this worse since it made his girlfriend leave him. Without her he becomes more lonely than he ever has been and decides that he has to have her back because he loves her and without her his life is just plain misery but fate wont make things easier for him by placing some troublesome supernatural creatures in his path (Nephilim, demons, etc.). I have to say I was really frustrated that Angel had to suffer a lot. I wanted him to be happy because who could argue with me that he doesnt deserves that after everything that went through? Lol it also hasnt easy to have a voice in your head bugging you from time to time. So I guess Angel, beautiful name by the way, deserves a break sometime. The made a great team though :P
What else can I say about this story. The plot is quite promising and makes you want to read the next book of the series pretty soon. The characters have quite unique personalities and I just love that. Who wants a boring character that doesnt make you laugh, cry or get angry from time to time? :)
It has been a long time since I have read a book and instantly fell in love with it after reading just the first paragraph. Starving Blades is (in my opinion) an exceptional read. Now, this review is long overdue. I read this book many months ago but life (and a misplaced laptop) took control. This book made my feels come into action. This story is a tale about a supernatural soldier named Angel, his “soul” mate Sarre and his battle with the bottle that resulted in him driving away the love of his life, Kira. However, there is much more to the story than my brief summation of it. This story has layers and within each layer are characters that make you love them despite what they are and a story of how a man rises from his mistakes and gains all that he thought was once lost – in love and war.
There were times that I wanted to pop Angel upside the head and shake him, root for him and the other characters as well as snicker like a part of the conversations. Natasha just made me a bit jealous lol. The plot was different. Knowing the type of stories that Natasha Wetzel writes is one thing. Reading how she puts the story together from beginning to end is another. This was book is like a breath of fresh air. It is different, entertaining – nothing written detracted diminished my interest in the slightest. While this is a story of fiction, the emotions emitted were believable and the dialogue is well written as well.
I would hate to give more than I have away in this story but one of my favorite parts occurs in chapter 18. If I had to choose my least favorite, it would be that the battle scene was over much too fast to my liking although I am not complaining. It neither detracted nor ruined my love for this book in any way.
I give this story 10 out of 5 stars…yes, I have to give it extra! I am a new fan of Natasha Wetzel and I am not going to read this book again!
I was given Starving Blades as a gift and it is the first book of this genre that I've read and I’m now looking forward to reading many more.
Angelique Le’Count, or Angel which he prefers, is a half-breed angel who is eternally bonded to a war spirit, Sarre. When we first meet Angel he is alone and seems hell bent on self-destruction. He’s not only driven away the love of his life but Sarre as well, although she returns to him early in the first chapter. Sarre is funny, annoying and at times nasty – you can see why he tried to get rid of her. Unfortunately for him that’s impossible and he really does need her. At times the two of them play off each creating some memorable moments.
Angel sets out to win back the love of his and ends up meeting and allying with an antagonistic werewolf and demons. Ever met the 7 deadly sins? Want to? Well you’ll meet 5 of them in Starving Blades. They are very colourful characters although I have to say that Ezekiel (Wrath) started out reasonably well but ended up coming across as weak and quiet – to me - and his odd behaviour was commented on by Angel a few times but wasn’t explained.
The ‘older than time itself’ struggle between good and evil sends Angel on a mission with his new companions, but is good really good or evil really evil? Is it really that black and white? You’ll need to find out for yourself.
Overall the story itself is good, fun, unpredictable and very enjoyable. I will be looking for more books by Natasha Wetzel.
Now after reading the blurb I really thought this book was for me. I was going to devour this book! But it really fell flat for me. I felt that Angelique was just always woe is me. I just couldn't get a good feel on him, and not only that I seemed to be a bit lost within the story as to what exactly was happening at times. The action scene I expected more being as this story deals with the paranormal. Angels, demons, Guardians, Half-Breeds, werewolves and more. I felt as there could have either been more blood-shed with the fighting scene or more action.
I did get that Angelique has hit rock bottom and the one person he loves is who he needs back in his life he was written really good but just wasn't a character I could really enjoy reading about.
For me the only two characters I really liked and they have short parts and it is towards the end was Ashley who just had me chuckling with laughter at how she talked or handled situations. She knew how to speak her mind and get her point across. And Convel who even though he was cocky and a womanizer and acts like he doesn't have feelings was a just a hot character.
Now the ending! I loved, being as it is a bit of a cliff-hanger but not much of one. I do wonder if in book two will it be more about Angelique or will it be with more of the other characters that played a part in this story line.
If you are a fan of the paranormal then give this author a try!
Angel (Angelique) may be one of my new favorite characters. He’s certainly not your “typical” hero. He’s a disaster in many ways. He’s a perfectly flawed, but absolutely lovable character. And the book written from his point of view is often hilarious, with the “tell it like it is” male point of view.
And, as the book goes on, and we continue to meet more characters, and a sort of “family” of social misfits (for a reason), I loved all of them too. They were all so unique, funny, and some in their own right scary. As they all cross paths, and Angel comes back to understanding through them and other events of what his true destiny is, you find in some weird way they are all part of his destiny – if anything, to remind him who he is.
The writing of this book was really well done too. The author’s way of writing and describing details and feelings was very intelligent, clear, and gave me a perfect picture of every place and person. I really, really enjoyed her writing.
As I got closer to the end, I found myself yelling in my head “but we’re just getting started!” So, needless to say, I am definitely going to be reading the next book in this series, and I can’t wait to see what else is in store for each of these amazing characters. Very well written story by a female writer about a male half breed angel. This book had me sucked in right from the beginning. Once a soldier of God, now the mighty warrior has been over taken by alcohol. He lost the love of his life Kira when he started drinking due to the fact of not being able to please her and his jealous war spirit Sarre. His relationship with Sarre is hilarious, she is so demanding and childish that is makes you laugh! Angel decides that he needs to find Kira and try to make things right. With the help of Sarre he is able to locate her. This is where the story take a major unexpected turn! Kira is actually a demon and lives with the human forms of the 7 deadly sins! (we only get to meet 5 of them.... so I am hoping to meet the others in the next book hint hint!) Once they except Angel they come to an agreement to except one another. They end up on a mission together at the request of the Angelic Leaders. I will leave the rest for you to read for yourself... I do not want to tell you the whole story. But if Angels and Demons are something you like to read about you will love this book and be left hanging wanting more!
This book was definitely different from what you expect. I really enjoyed it and thought it was a nice original story. The beginning did take some time to take off, but it grabbed your interest and kept you turning the pages to see what happened. I felt for our hero from the start. He was in such pain that I wanted to know the whole story and I wanted to see where it went.
Angel is thousands of years old and from the start of the book you know that he has fallen far down int he whole of his sorrows. Granted he does have an annoying as heck spirit attached to him, as well as having to hold his secret in. His life is far from easy.
The decisions he has made have caused him to lose the one light in his life, the one thing he can’t live without, his girlfriend. He knows that he must have here back and will do anything to make that happen. As any good book life doesn’t allow this fact to happen easy.
The book was well written and had a unique and interesting plot. The characters were well written and it was an overall easy read. Overall a good book
Starving Blades is about Angelique Le’count, a depressed half-breed angel… in the beginning of the book we discover that Angelique (Angel) lost the love of his life (Kira) when his human side became addicted to alcohol….As we read through we see Angel fight his demons to get his love and life back. I really liked Angel because he is not your typical hero, his story grows throughout the book and keeps you interested in the things that he does, he has real struggles that he must overcome. The book is very well written and draws you in as you go along Angel’s journey with him. The only thing that bugged me was that there was no follow up on what Ezekiel deal is… I is hinted at throughout the whole book that there is something dodgy about him I also read him that way and then nothing was concluded with this. I suppose there is always the next book. Over all I enjoyed the book and loved the character Angel and can’t wait to see what the next book holds for the unlikely hero
I quite enjoyed this book. Once I finally found a place and time where I could get some peace and quiet, I did not put this book down (well....except for when the cats demanded lovings...never deny a cat their lovings) I was impressed at the mthology in the book, and the new spin I had not expected to see in a book. Angel is a wonderful protagonst, and I was relieved that he was not Mr. Perfect, which is how so many of the male protagonists are portrayed these days. Even though Sarre seemed whiney and posessive to me at first, she definitely grew on me, as did all of the characters. The only "negative" thing I will say is that there were some spelling errors (mostly just words that got mxed up) an some punctiation issues, but not enough to take away from the story or deserve the removal of a star.
A great novel based around an intoxicated crossbreed of angel and human. Angel or Angelique is the main character with a string of flaws to his nature, which allow the reader to engage well with the book- it is fantastic to see the weaknesses the character possesses.
Starving Blades is an action-filled book with super characters giving an enjoyable and fun read. Anyone interested in the fantasy genre is sure to love this read, with werewolves, demons and spirits. The half-angel, struggles with many issues as part of his destiny and will really get you into the story.
A well-written and interesting story- certainly well worth a look! You will want more of Wetzel's work 5*****
This book is a paranormal romance about Angel, a half angel half human alcoholic who turned to the bottle in order to drown out his 'war spirit' Sarre but all his drinking did was drive Kira, his love, away.
After months without Kira, Angel decides enough is enough and goes off to find her and either end things properly or beg for her to take him back. It's here that things get very very interesting. The book becomes very fast paced and action packed and you won't want to put it down.
This book has it all, Daemons, wares, half breeds and even angels oh and lets not forget, one hell of a fight that will have you questioning a few of the characters.
The ending was awesome and even though this is the first book in the series, there wasn't a huge cliff hanger waiting for me :)
A very different paranormal read revolving around the main character (Angel). Who is (what I've come to know as) a Nephilim (a cross breed of angel and human) that is going through various battles, constantly throughout his life. Most of them within himself and he has been doing this for a VERY long time. It has a bit of a slow start but do not fret. It picks up and keeps on going until the very end. The originality of the story alone keeps a reader turning its pages and I'm sure many fans of the genre will enjoy meeting Angel and all of the other characters throughout the story. I look forward to seeing what else the author has in store for my greedy little eyes :)
Angel is exactly that, a fallen angel, and he's had a rough six months. He's depressed, has a drinking problem, is angry at his war spirit, and has lost the love of his life. Spurred on by his inability to stare at the four walls of his home any longer, Angel sets out to win back the woman he can't get over, Kira. What he finds sparks my favorite quote in the book: "What the hell Kira, do you live in a mother fuckin' frat house?" You'll understand why I found that so funny when you read this awesome book for yourself. It's not a frat house. It's something more sinister and I hope that this is only the beginning. I need to know the story of all seven of the deadly sins now.
Interesting story involving a half breed angel. He is a train-wreck, he has so many issues going on you can't help but root for him. First he is so up front which I loved, the relationship of Serra is great. The twists and turns that involve Kira, a demon in human form. Which leads to a angels and demons battle. The book could definitely us some more editing, I did find a lot of mistakes which at times took away from the story.
For me the beginning of this book was a bit slow and I felt like it could be cleaned up a little. BUT once I got into the story and met some of the other characters it really picked up. I absolutely LOVED the characters in this story and their origins! They had amazing personality and sass and they were all interesting enough to have their own books in my opinion. I also really liked the ending and have to say I didn't see that coming! This could definitely turn into a great series and I really hope to see these characters again because I am very interested in seeing how they develop.
If you like the paranormal world, you are going to LOVE Natasha Wetzel's Starving Blades, the first book of her Otherworldly Prophecies series. Full of twists and turns this book will lead you into the world of Angels, Shifters and demons. She introduces you to characters that you will love to hate and some hotties like Covel that you won't be able to forget. This book leaves you wanting more. I can't wait for book two. :)
This is a great book, Natasha has a way of pulling you into her characters and making you care about what happens to them. When I found myself questioning things, the explanation was not far behind. I do wish there was a bit more of Kira and hope to see more of her next time around. I am excited to read the next installment, and to find out where the story goes.
Amazing read! i cant wait for natasha wetzels next book in the series! the characters are like the friends you always wanted to have, and they keep you amused through the most dire situations. this origional story keeps you on the edge of your seat, biting your nails and eyes glazed over with awe as the pages turn. i am now and will forever be an Otherworldly Prohecies junkie!
i loved it. the author did a wonderful job on the main character angel. i could feel his heart ache over loosing his girl and his anguish over his addiction. it is a series story nut at the same time angel is such a smart elick u cant help nut laugh over and over again. this book had a good beginning great middle and awesome ending. ready for book number 2.
What a great way to start a story by jumping feet first right into the mix! A soldier of God without a purpose with a demon spirit who loves him. Kira, the love of his life has left him. What's a half-breed angel to do?? This is a great start to a new series. Can't wait for the next book. Great read.
I liked the ideas in the book. However it wasn't that well written and I had to force myself to finish it. There were quite a few grammatical problems in the book. Sarre was the best part of the book. The book spent a long time wallowing that when it got interesting... it ended.
An intriguing mix of characters makes for a very interesting, well-written book. The story grabs you from page one and doesn't let go. I highly recommend not only this book, but anything else by this very talented author.
Just finished reading Starving Blades, and found it to be really good. The characters are all very interesting and comical in their own ways, and there are great relationships and interactions between characters. Very interested and excited for the second installment!!
Wetzel creates an intriguing and engaging secret world beneath the layer of our own world. She uses that world to develop a story that drew me in as a reader and continued to surprise me.
