Things that go bump in the night have always intrigued me. Sometimes those things are human; other times, not so much. I really played with this in my Hidden series, that reveals humans with the essence of gods who walk the knife's edge between Miami and a magical world of passion and danger. Part dragon, angel, or sorcerer, they must fight their own kind, demons, and the lure of their darkest nature.

If you’re familiar with my Tina Wainscott books, you know I'm fascinated with all things psychic. I cannot wait for the rest of this series. This was a great novella to begin things. There is significant world building and we get to see many of the main characters and even get glimpses of what might be coming in the full length novels to come. Being a fan of Jaime’s work, I was thoroughly happy with every minute of this read. Though I would have loved to have the story be longer and maybe starting a few years earlier so we could see the couple falling in love. But seeing as it was just a tease for the coming series it was a great read. Full of vivid imagination, emotional growth and challenging battles both physical and magical Dragon Mine is a must read. I’m looking forward to finding out what happens to Lyra in her story coming in December, Dragon Awakened.

I love dragons so it's hard for me to read a book about dragons and find it just okay but that's what this one was. It was a big information dump and retelling of what happened in the past. The dialogue was a bit flat and the character's motivations didn't always make sense. Honestly, when I finished it I was a bit let down and I'm not sure I'll even read the next one.

Talk about B.O.R.I.N.G!!! Aside from the boring plot, pacing, the unrealistic characters and dialogue, I don't know what was worse.

This was literally my face during all but one scene in the book....

Then, when the love scene happened....

And I was like "Oooh la la!!" So smexy.

Then after that it went back to....

And,

To be honest, I am still very up in the air with the whole "novella before the series starts" trend that I am seeing, but with the two that I have read lately, the books have seemed to launch a series with great potential... so maybe I should sit back and keep my mouth shut about it!

Kirin is a Dragon shifter and a part of the world of the Crescents - a paranormal world that coexists alongside our own. Because of the mystical force that gives Dragons their power that exists under the Bahamas, most Dragons congregate in Miami, which is where Kirin once lived. But because of a love affair gone horribly wrong, Kirin made a break from his past, his family, and the very soil that feeds his energy and moved to Atlanta. But when his father mysteriously disappears, he finds himself on the way home again to try and help his sister solve the mystery of his father's disappearance. When he arrives, he has to let loose his Dragon and does so in a familiar place - the abandoned factory warehouse of his lost love Elle.

I didn't like this at all. It rambled about their origins, which I still didn't completely understand. The jumping to conclusions by both Kirin and Elle. Lyra comes into the story as the catalyst to bring Kirin back to their town, then promptly disappears. Elle says she suspect Lyra of trying to get them back together, but then Lyra flips out on the phone when Kirin is with Elle.

His father is missing, her father is missing and there are strange Gods watching everything play out like its a football game.

Then the story had the nerve to end on a cliffhanger... Huh?!

Just too strange and not enough information for me to care about the characters. I just wanted it to be over. I don't like saying I hate someone's hard work and efforts to create a story, but this just didn't work for me.

Sorry!

What a fantabulously brilliant and unique world Jaime Rush has created in The Hidden. I am a HUGE fan of her Offspring series and have been chomping at the bit for Dragon Mine, the prequel novella for her new series. So much awesome packed into this novella; great plot, intriguing characters, suspense, mystery, and a seriously smexy dragon.

Dragon Mine set up the series perfectly and with the cliffhanger ending had me itching for more. I can't wait to get my hot little hands on Dragon Rising, the first book in the series, so I can dive further into the world of The Hidden. I give Dragon Mine 4.5 stars.

I really wanted to give Dragon Mine higher stars since I love the story concept and the array of characters. However, I found that the info dumping and lack of explanation in the novella interfered with the flow of the story. The chemistry between Kirin and Ellie is great and I love how they reunite once again, and the action in the story adds suspense. But like I said, I wish there had been more explanation instead of just jumping right into the story like that. I hope that the upcoming novel doesn't fall prey to the same pitfalls because I really like the direction of this series. Dragons, magick, and romance make a great combo, and hopefully the upcoming novel explains more about this fascinating world.

Setting: Miami – mostly the abandoned factory of her father;

Theme: where are their fathers? Who did what to whom? love

Characters:
Kirin Slade: dragon; loves Ellie; when she dumped him, he went to Atlanta to work; returns home when dad disappeared for 2 days;

Lyra Slade: sister; called to tell Kirin dad was missing; in end, she is also missing; she had some sort of note that Kirin knew the contents of, that she burned rather than give to police – to protect her father from circumstantial evidence; Ellie knows Kirin read something, and angry that he didn’t report it;

Tara Becker: Ellie’s mother; dragon; raped by Stagmalia dragon; consulted with Huff, a Deuce, to determine which one; they married;

Stein Slade: Kirin’s dad; friend to Tara; 4 years ago, she went missing, and Stein accused, but no evidence;

Ellie Elle Becker: grew up with and fell in love with Kirin, in spite of her father’s disapproval; when her mother went missing, and Kirin’s father seems most likely involved, and when it seems Kirin is hiding something;

Huff Becker: sure Stein is responsible for his wife’s disappearance – and finally takes action, creating a monster to haunt Stein – instead the monster swallows him;

Vocab of this dragon mythology:
Mundane = humans
The Guard = supernatural police
The Field of Deus Vis = electromagnetic energy area around Lucifera, sunken island in the Bermuda Triangle reaching to Miami; essence of a Dragon god in one’s body was the essence required the Deus Vis to survive…
The Hidden – encompassed Crescent magick – Dragons, Elementals, demons, Deuce magick, human/angel; made by gods, during the Divergence, which allowed them to take physical human form – getting it on with the humans and making half-god, half-human babies dubbed Crescents;
These same gods like to ‘play’ with the Crescents – placing bets between themselves, and manipulating humans;
Stragmaglias: Obsidian Dragons – vicious, enemies of the Slades;
Dragon = a tattoo that represents the beast’s essence shifting across Kirin’s skin; an independent entity intertwined with their soul;
Squasher – magic made monster;
Sedash and Goron – gods – who place bet (sitting in a daycare center all day versus an evening in a Mundane nightclub; who will win – the squasher or Kirin;

Summary:
As Kirin and Ellie work together to locate their dads, they confront their past, and their continuing feelings for one another… Kirin telling her, he and his dragon chose her 6 years ago, and will never unchoose her… and she uses her magick to ‘feel’ the truth of his words… and he tells her the truth, and that he saw some of the note – and it was written to his father by her mother, and she wrote she was pregnant… Kirin is still convinced his father did not have an affair with her mother, nor had anything to do with her missing;

With some advice from Goron, they figure out how to defeat the monster her father created – expected to find his dad inside – but her father was caught in it… and he is humbled, and accepts Kirin into the family now… but Lyra is now missing – and their dad hasn’t been located either.

Disclosure time. This review was requested from NetGalley but is being done after I requested to feature the author post for Authors After Dark 2013. She couldn't commit but requested a review and I agreed. Although this may seem like it would cause me to be falsely positive about this novella, I hasten to add that it wouldn’t. I’d have done the review anyway and talk Ms Rush that I wasn’t doing it as a spotlight. There is no point in lying; you always get found out. Sorted? Good.

This is the first in a new series all about dragon shifters and I liked the new slant it brought to the mythology of this genre. In this one the dragons are present all the time but, when the Dragon is in human form, it exists as a tattoo on the skin. When a dragon mates, he mates for life and that has what has happened with Kirin. He mated with Elle but allowed her to break up with him when the truth about an affair between his Father and her Mother came out. Since then, he has moved away, denied his dragon and been a bit of a miserable bugger to be honest. Then daddy-dearest goes missing in mysterious circumstances so he has to return to his home and face the woman he loves because chances are her dad has something to do with the whole mess. Bit of a mess right?

I liked the premise and it definitely intrigued me enough to get the next in the series. A whole series about Dragons? Sign me up. The characters in this one were well written and the plot flowed smoothly. Kellen was a fantastic Alpha dragon, who was man enough to admit to his feelings, and Elle was a kick-ass heroine who accepted that she couldn’t fight her feelings. It was a star-crossed lover’s tale that I really enjoyed and the previous relationship angle totally hooked me in. The sex scenes were incredibly hot and, due to the previous relationship angle, I bought into their chemistry which made reading them even better. I appreciated the lack of the insta-mate plot and the fact that both man and dragon had picked Elle as their one-and-only gave me a case of the warm and fuzzies J

I have to admit though, I did get a little confused as to what was going on at certain points with the mystery plot. There was a whole lot going on and it was only a 120 page novella. It was a very brief whistle-stop introduction into this world and, although I had my issues with it because I struggled to keep up, it was overall a very good promising to a series that I will undoubtedly continue. It was also incredibly funny with pop-culture references that had me chuckling all the way to work. Would I recommend it? Yes, I really would.

Overall, I requested this book for a Spotlight post but I have added the next two books to my sleeves on GR because of it. I have found a fresh, funny and sexy series set in a fascinating world full of hunky dragon shifters. I am very much looking forward to the next in the series.

In preparation of upcoming series Jaime Rush gives us a short intro into her new world with Dragon Mine. I’ve read a few of her books in the past but I always felt something was missing. When I received this one for review I was skeptical I would like it but when I saw it was rather short, even for a novella, I figured I had nothing to lose.

Kirin and Elle have a sordid past filled with love, regret and betrayal. When Elle’s mother disappeared and all the evidence pointed to Kirin’s father and an affair gone wrong, Elle expected him to back up her claims. Instead he sided with his sister and Elle broke up with him. Now six months later Kirin’s dad has disappeared and the prime suspect is Elle’s father who was blinded by rage over the thought of his wifes betrayal. What her father set loose is an entity he can’t control and the only two people that can stop it are Elle and Kirin. If they can manage to work together and get past all the pain….and the unexpected heat that flares once again.

While I enjoyed this one I wish it would have been a bit longer. The author just sort of jumps head first into this world and I wish she would have spent a bit more time explaining the inner workings of this new place. The world is full of all kinds of magical beings, humans, angels and Gods in which readers are supposed to immediately identify with.

I love the idea of dragon shifters and since Kirin is one, I enjoyed that aspect. I also thought it was unique that while he was powerful he also wasn’t overly large. Rush also does an excellent job with the imagery, with Kirin, but with everything else as well. Elle was a harder sell for me. Though I understood why she would be hurt by Kirin not buying the story that his father had a hand in her mothers disappearance, she seemed not able to understand his point of view at all. I mean she was talking about his father. When it becomes evident that her own father has conjured an entity that seems to have a hand in Kirin’s fathers disappearance she is apologetic but I wanted Kirin to rage at her a bit over the turned tables. Guess he’s the bigger person because he does not. Karma. It’s a bitch.

The novella ends incredibly abruptly with nothing really tied up at all. I was a bit shocked at the lack of any type of conclusion but I guess it sets up the first full length book nicely. Too bad that book isn’t out until this Christmas. By that time I’ll have forgotten the story arc and I’ll have to re-read. I typically like novellas to give me some closure. I didn’t get that with this one but I enjoyed the introduction. Rush definitely ensures that if you like this one you’ll be back.

I give Dragon Mine by Jaime Rush 3.75 stars!

(This is a section of a full review that was originally posted on SnarkyMomReads, covering both "Dragon Mine" and "Dragon Rising".)

This is a TWO-FER! Yep, two novellas in one review, because they share a story arc. Now, before you panic - NO, you do not have to read both of them at the same time (unless you have OCD tendencies like me - then yes, schedule time for both back-to-back). While the story arc is referred to in both novellas, the action & romance focuses on two separate couples - and each couple has their own book. If you want the answer to the mystery right away, be ready to read both right away. If you are more interested in the romance, they are both easily read as stand-alone stories.

"Dragon Mine" and "Dragon Rising" are novellas in the HIDDEN series, where Jaime Rush has created a world of "Hiddens" (dragons, gods, wizards & angels) that is both imaginative and addictive. It is a contemporary novel where the paranormal are actually "hidden" to "Mundanes" (humans - that'd be you & me), and is so well crafted it makes you really wonder about some of the things that go bump in the night. (Was that really a microburst storm that passed through last night... or a tulpa fight?)

The Hidden novellas feature a mystery about Elle's Mom, Tara - did someone cause her disappearance? As the number of missing Hiddens adds up, who, or what, is behind it all?

Dragon Mine (A Hidden Novella) is the 99 page story of Elle and Kirin ($1.99). Elle is a mage and Kirin is a dragon shifter, who were first loves but broke up because Elle's father didn't approve of her dating a dragon - especially when Kirin's father is the one accused of killing Elle's mother. Upon his return to town, Kirin runs into Elle and they are immediately thrown into a life & death situation that means they must put aside their disappointments in each other and rely on the love they still have for each other. We also get an introduction to some of the gods that originally created the Hiddens, and can see how their machinations affect their progeny. (There is a bet... and the loser has to spend a full day in a human daycare with the screaming kids.) There is a HEA here... and while the story arc is continued in "Dragon Rising", you aren't left with an angry "WTF??!!!!?" reaction when you get to the book's end. Yes, you'll be curious about the mystery, but at least your questions are answered about the relationship with Elle & Kirin.

Bottom line? Nice length of novella reads and really great introduction to the Hidden world. Jaime Rush's writing is sexy and smooth - and I'm really looking forward to the next 3 books! THUMBS UP!!

Reviewed for: Where the Night Kind Roam

So I picked up this book with high hopes because I love dragons! I mean what’s not to love about dragon shifters in the paranormal genre?! They are massive, scary yet beautiful, breathe fire and are seriously Alpha. So I am sad to report that this one just did not live up to my expectations. It was merely mediocre. I honestly don’t even remember all that much about it, I only read it about a week ago and I’ve already forgotten the characters names (good they are in the description) and mostly what it is about. I can’t even use the excuse that I’ve read a bunch of books since then, because I’ve only read one other book. That is how mediocre this book is. I can’t say it was bad, there was just not really anything that stuck out about it.

So from what I can remember Kirin is a dragon and after Elle basically blamed his father for killing her mother she booted him from her life. Kirin left and found a job a state over, but his dragon is suffering for leaving the magick of the area. There is absolutely no proof or even any really motive for Kirin’s dad to have killed Elle’s mom so even this plot line is a bit farfetched even for paranormal. When Kirins father disappears he is called back to Miami. As it turns out Elle’s dad has disappeared too (wow what a coincidence) and there is this magickly demon thingy that is trying to kill Kirin. Then the gods get involved and it becomes a weird competition?? I’m not really sure of the point of the gods, but whatev’s I just went with it. In the middle of all of this Kirin wants his woman back, he never wanted to leave her in the first place but she is determined to keep him at a arm’s length even though I didn’t think she had much basis to be all that mad at him in the first place. Her reasoning seemed more than a little bit dumb. Kirin was a pretty decent character but I never really grew a fondness for Elle. She keeps him at an arm’s length and then does a completely abrupt 180 and suddenly all is forgiven. It was all just very eh and not very realistic. Oh and the conversation at times felt so awkward and they talked like no real person ever would. And the clichés! Oh how I hate clichés and this book definitely had them.

It’s not likely I will continue with this series. I probably won’t even remember this book much past the posting of this review to even look for book 2.

What would you do if the love of your life was a dragon? And you well, weren't? If your father hated dragons unconditionally. Then your mother disappears and her most recent friend was a dragon? Yeah tough choices and they only get worse in Jaimie Rush's Dragon Mine, the exciting first book in her new series Hidden.

Life just keeps going from bad to worse for Elle.. Her Dragon mother disappeared and with it her trust in her Dragon boyfriend.. Six months after the split her father has gone missing as well. And sure enough said Dragon is back in town, telling her his father is missing as well. Her Duece Magick can only go so far and she needs all the help she can get.

Six months ago Kirin had to choose between betraying his sister and sharing info with his dragon's choice of a mate. He chose to keep his sister safe and the love of his life kicked him to the door. Trying to make a new life for himself he moved to Atlanta, leaving Elle, his family and magick behind him. Now with one phone call life he is being pulled back in. His father is missing..

No one knows why Elle's mother disappeared and everyone assumes it's because she was having an affair with Kirin's father.. Only thing is neither of his children scented her on him or noticed changes in his behavior and have never felt like that was the case. Now Elle's father is hell bent on revenge and both have disappeared. Kirin and Elle realize they must work together to solve this mystery.

As the forces combine both natural and supernatural, Kirin and Elle realize that even when their families are against them some loves can't die. Figuring out where to go from there is a totally different matter.

This was a great introduction to this new series. It left all sorts of threads dangling.. telling us just enough to intrigue us and draw us into her web Ms Rush tells a tantalizing tease!! Read it and enjoy...

2.5 stars - because this was okay but I think there is potential for the series.

Former lovers dragon Kirin and magic wielder Elle, will have to put the past behind them in order to solve the mystery behind the disappearance of their missing fathers and it will take their combined powers and the power of love to defeat a powerful entity which seeks their deaths.

The beginning of this prequel short is heavy on the oddball terminology associated with the Crescent world of Dueces and Dragons and instead of pulling me into this new world that put me off enough that it took me two tries before I was able to make it through The Hidden.

Still I like the idea behind this world - dragons and magic are generally a winning combo for me - and the conflict behind the story is interesting enough that I suspect that the real problem is that Rush tried to do too much in her short - and didn't really have enough space to actually answer my questions about the magical part of the Crescent world while still having enough time to reconnect the former lovers. So I am guessing that it probably would have worked better to have read Dragon Mine to fill in the blanks about Kirin and Elle after reading the first book - especially since this story just reveals some clues about the background mystery without giving us the resolution.

(ETA - there is actually another novella Dragon Rising in October before the first full length book, Dragon Awakened, comes out in December so I am not sure if that short is really just part II of this one - since Kirin's sister is in the lead.)

Book Review- Dragon Mine by Jaime Rush

This novella brings back together past lovers, Elle and Kirin. Kirin is a dragon and has separated himself from his family by moving to Atlanta. After Elle thought he chose his family over her, she broke his heart. She blamed Kirin’s father for her mom’s disappearance. When possible evidence surfaced, Kirin’s sister destroyed it and Elle knew that Kirin lied about seeing it. She felt hurt and betrayed. She turned her back on Kirin and walked away from him.
Now her father is missing and she believes Kirin’s father Stein is behind it. This stems from her mother’s disappearance, she is sure of it. Unfortunately she comes face to face with Kirin at her father’s factory. He is back in town looking for his father who is also missing. It can’t be a coincidence and they team up to find out what happened. They encounter dangerous shadow magic and have to fight together to save her father.
This was a quick read full of action and hurt feelings. The characters still love each other but are unsure if they can be together with the complications that their families provide. The story was a good but I felt it was too short. It felt rushed. I thought the characters jumped from emotion to emotion too quickly. I will definitely read the next dragon book to see how the story continues when it follows Kirin’s sister in her quest to find out what happened to her father. I give this novella a 3 out of 5.

I have found myself loving the paranormals in The Hidden series. This was a novella which introduces the inhabitants of the slice of Florida that has become home to these people with many secrets. The characters are well defined quickly so that you are able to get an immediate idea of who they are in regard to each other as well as within themselves. The writing follows a natural progression which keeps your interest. The myth is laid out here for what will be given more detail as the series continues.

Kirin Slade moved away from Florida years ago, after the disappearance of his girlfriends mother who was thought to be having an affair with his father. He only comes back a couple times a year in order to soak up his required essence. When he receives a call from his sister saying that their father has gone missing he makes his way home hoping he can help locate him.

Elle's dad has always believed that Stein, Kirin's father, killed his wife after she rejected him. Because of her fathers belief and her own Elle broke up with Kirin even though she loved him. She is less than happy when he returns and stirs up old feelings. Something has been raised to exact revenge and it does not discriminate between the bad and the good.

The gods here are capricious and cruel, but they are just as there mortal children are. Dragons, mages, and angels all the descendants of gods who wanted the pleasures of the flesh and now use them for sport. Recommend to everyone.

Review of Jamie Rush’s DRAGON MINE

Right off the bat Kirin Slade is informed of his father’s disappearance. This sets in motion his investigation into what happened.

Once at home, he literally is hit by his long lost love Ellie. Soon he finds her father is missing also. Demons at their doorstep are hindering their investigation in how or why these men are gone.

Can Kirin control his Dragon inside of himself while his love Ellie is around? Magic and mystery is everywhere they go.

My Thoughts about DRAGON MINE

The picture on the front of the novel DRAGON MINE is luscious and sexy, but it doesn’t come close to how Rush describes Kirin Slade… oh my!

What I liked about the book is the action, suspense, romance and paranormal activity in this novel, DRAGON MINE by Author Jamie Rush was captivating. I was pulled into the story immediately. The scenes are fluid and the dialogue is believable.

The mystery behind this novel is what grabs you by the shirt and drags you to finish the book.

Of course, I am a romantic and Rush does not fail the tension between Kirin and Ellie is there from the get-go. She entices us with thoughts from Kirin and Ellie. Rush is undeniably sly in the way she weaves these two great characters into a mystical mission.

FIVE STARS, and I highly recommend all to read and enjoy Jamie Rush’s Dragon Mine!

Dragon Mine is a rich and alluring tale, drawing us into the contemporary world of Crescents, the part human descendants of Dragon and Deuce Magick gods. Kirin is mesmerizing, in human or dragon form, and the long lost love of his life, Elle, practitioner of Deuce Magcik, is equally compelling. They are thrown together by chance when both their fathers mysteriously disappear. Sparks fly, between them, and in their battles with a shadow demon who won’t stay dead.

The pace is action fast, perfectly interspersed with romantic tension and driven by a suspenseful, multi-layered plot. Jamie Rush has a flare for turning her original mythos into a vital and seamlessly real story world. The Dragon as a live tattoo, rippling and stretching its wings across Kirin’s torso is both believable and utterly captivating. It’s hard not to hold your breath when he Catalyzes into the magnificent red and white scaled, fire breathing dragon. His passions and loyalty mix with Elle’s to make this novella a paranormal romance lover’s dream. I can’t wait to read more. Next up is Dragon Rising!

A short, quick read that starts the introduction to The Hidden series to come out soon.

Kirin is a dragon that has been living away from home for a while, trying to make a life away from the woman he loves. Elle has stayed in Miami and worked with her father, never thinking she will see Kirin again. When his father goes missing he returns home and is immediately drawn to her as she is to him. However, her father has also gone missing and there is evidence of magick gone awry.

This was a great introduction to the new series. The world is interesting and similar enough to ours to keep track and understand. The characters are well developed and even in this short story we get a sense of not only who they are but also their history. A lot happens but it happens in a way thats easy to follow and keep you interested. I am looking forward to continuing the series and seeing what happens next.

This is a short novella to help start of Jamie Rush's Hidden series.

It book was action packed and didn't stop from the word go, however I never got a true feeling of the emotions between Kirin and Elle. Although there was talk of their feelings and of their past, it never rang true, it was if an essential spark was missing.

I also did not care for the arrogance that Kirin showed. It was definitely on the major ego strong side, BUT, he did have a sweet side that we saw with Elle.

We see Gods playing with their half human race, betting on winners and 'helping' them whilst leaving them also at a disadvantage. We see that the Gods to not take their half children on earth seriously and like to play with them.

The novella leaves us with a cliff hangar leaving you wanting more, however, you can't guess as to what will happen next.

Wasn't that impressed with this book. It definitely needed a glossary to explain some of the terms and there were a ton of terms within the first chapter. It never explained what a Deuce was and yet three of the characters were Deduces. I'm guessing they were some type of witches. The two main characters, Elle and Kirin, had previously been lovers so that fast relationship was completely believable. I just would've liked more back story or more explanation on the world that this takes place in. I'll try reading the next in the series just because too much was left hanging in this book and that's a huge pet peeved of mine. I understand your trying to build a series, but at least give me a little closure.

This was an odd cookie. I'm still not sure what to make of it. "The Big Plot" didn't find a satisfactory ending here, I guess that's why there's another novella in the series before we get to the novels.

I do love my dragon books, but this one... Seriously, not sure how I feel about it. It's well written so it's not that. I guess I never really was on board with the characters, and the plot...a weird one.

I was a little weirded out by this book, so I'll be holding off for a while before I read the next installment.

Great start to this series, it was a fast story about two high school couple and broke it off years earlier when things came up that stood between Elle & Kirin. They never thought they would run into each other looking for answers for why their father's suddenly disappeared, while trying to get answers, dealing with a monsters and Kirin telling Ellie him and his dragon claimed her as their mate and picking up their love where they left it while fighting the monster to save someones essence.

Dragon Mine is a novella in The Hidden series. It's my understanding that the novella were published first, then the full length novels; however, it's best to read the novellas between the second and third books in the series. The third book does make reference to events that happen in them. You could read the novellas without reading the entire series.
