You can always count on something going wrong at Grove Hill Elementary, commonly known as Graveyard School for the burial plot located behind it. In what manner will the supernatural strike next? Alex Lee finds himself with a problem when he detects an unearthly smell in the boys' bathroom. He's loath to bring it to the attention of the eccentric janitor, Mr. Bartholomew—aka Basement Bart—but eventually Alex has no choice. The janitor examines the bathroom, but pretends nothing much is amiss and merely suggests Alex not use that bathroom for a while. What is going on here?

Alex and his friend Park Addams realize the ongoing bathroom incidents cannot be ignored. Park witnesses a pair of spectral sneakers under a stall door during one visit; another time, the bathroom door freezes shut from the inside, temporarily preventing anyone from exiting. Basement Bart knows more than he's saying, but Alex and Park circumvent him to do their research at the local public library, which has articles about recent building projects at Graveyard School.

An earthquake allegedly occurred at the school not long ago and construction repairmen were hired, including a business called Deep Six Plumbers. They were brought in after a previous vendor botched the placement of the new bathroom, putting it several feet out of alignment with essential plumbing structures. When questioned, Ralph Smith of Deep Six Plumbers tells Alex and Park he fixed the problem, but the whole affair is a red flag. Could the initial mistake have stirred the soul of a ghost from the graveyard out back, causing it to seek revenge? Can its soul be laid to rest before something terrible happens?

I hesitate to round my one-and-a-half star rating of There's a Ghost in the Boys' Bathroom to two. The writing and story are generic, with no real surprise or excitement. Certain plot elements get picked up and dropped with little effect, giving the impression of an aimless narrative. Still, there's nothing outright illogical about the concept, and it's a fairly cozy read. Cam DeLeon's cover illustration may be the highlight. This book isn't on the level of R.L. Stine's Goosebumps, but you might enjoy yourself.

Kicking off my… uh… bathroom binge…?…we have this random Graveyard School. This wasn’t a good’un, that’s all you need to know. The climax is fun and the writing is solid, and I enjoy the world of Graveyard School itself. But the concept is brain-dead stupid and boring: a ghost… haunting a bathroom. It’s about as interesting as it sounds and whilst it takes advantage, it leaves a lot to be desired with its simplicity. Let alone it’s a shitty idea, badum-tss. The answers we get a pretty much just inconclusive and the resolution was underwhelming, as there was basically no payoff to the mystery aspect of this story outside of the ending. It’s a fine ending but, again, it’s inconclusive and doesn’t even explain a certain element of the ghost in question not being tied to the bathroom exclusively, nor why it even chooses to haunt the bathroom if it isn’t bound to it. Too much ambiguity. Not to mention the humor is
wack, there’s a weird perv joke on page 25 (yes it bothered me that much; these are fucking fifth graders, Tom), and the story is all-in-all very forgettable. Overall, 4.5/10. I didn’t hate this as there’s some sound positives, but still, lots of issues here. Quagmire Toilet Gif (bro couldn’t afford the gif 🥀)

Sad that it took me a month to finish this quick, little 99 page book! I got busy with work starting back and honestly, this series doesn’t intrigue me anymore. I want to say I or my mom read this one back in the day. It’s just okay and one that kids will probably like but not something I would want to read more than once. Strange things start happening in the boys’ bathroom that had been newly renovated thanks to the T. Rex (AKA “the earthquake”) destroying the back of Graveyard School.

This was such a fun book! I loved it because it got my son excited about reading! The best part is at the end of the book there's a quiz to find out if your school is HAUNTED!!! How cool is that?! :D

Time for the Graveyard School section of this ripoff round. This is one I found physically a while ago and naturally the premise caught my interest. It’s yet another simple one to cover so let’s do it.

Alex Lee and his friends discover that the boy’s bathroom is haunted and they try to get the ghost out. Yeah, pretty simple one. It’s only 99 pages so it is quick. This is another one for the “good enough” streak we’ve been on.

The idea is silly but unique enough to work. There are some fun enough situations as the ghost fights back and even goes after Alex. They do explain what the deal is and it works, although the ghost never becomes a character. It does make it stand out as a ghost story at least, just means the ghost doesn’t make a big impact.

It flows well and there is solid ramping tension. Alex is generic but once again the kids have good chemistry. And yet again Polly Hannah just gets a cameo, smh. We get nods to Revenge of the Dinosaur and Slime Lake in here. Plus, more of Basement Bart, that’s fun.

I do like the little twist ending here, implying there could be more to this. I feel like they could have added more wild situations here and there, maybe make it more suspenseful early on as it can feel mundane at times. Aside from that, it’s a silly and basic story that works well and is fun. Nothing incredible but there is little to object to it. I do wish these Graveyard Schools could hit harder but we did get my favorite last summer at least.

I do like that the cover is accurate though. Put a star on that show and it would be a Tim Jacobus cover lol. Anyway, good book for what it is. Next time, Spinetinglers as we have a monster channel to deal with.

See ya then.

Welp, this one was still a really solid entry in the Graveyard School series, but so far my least favorite. That doesn't make it a bad one, but something has got to be my least favorite. This was still very fast paced overall, I thought the library and plumbing store visits were a bit dull, even if they are important to the story. However, I do think the scene with the ghost locking Alex and Park in the bathroom with red flowing slime from the ceiling is super cool, and that really adds some points to this book. I also found the twist ending to be the weakest of the bunch so far. Overall, another winning book in the series.

I remember this book from way back. It was the first one of the series that I ever read. I was getting a little tired of goosebumps and wanted to read something with a little more punch. This one had it. It had everything that I wasn't expecting. Ghosts coming to and fro. Coffins that break through the floor like in poltergeist. It's really a good read. A big departure from R.L. Stine's work . . .which is what is so good about it. This author doesn't hold back on the thrills. If anything, he throws them in your eyesight. Enjoy!
