A useful, readable, usable mix of guidebook, walking tour stations, and history, this really works quite well as an introduction to the history and environment of Harpers Ferry. I found I could -- and did -- read it before arriving, and, although I found better maps for my hikes, I used it for context of many of the things I was seeing inside the Park, and in the Civil War ruins around the town. It is hard to find a book that works well as a pre-read and as an in-place guide book, but this one does both. I can't imagine that I would have enjoyed my exploration of Harpers Ferry as well without having it, and I'm very glad I pre-ordered it from the National Park Service before the trip.
There was a little too much overlap between the text and illustrations between 'park interpretive signs' and the material in this book, so that I often felt I did not need to spend as much time reading when I visited .. but that worked well because there was so much to see that I enjoyed it more with this preparation.
Great easy to understand walking guide to Harpers Ferry and the surrounding areas. Lots of historical background is provided as our maps of the current buildings that are still up and maps of how the area looked centuries ago. Highly recommend you bring it with you if you’re traveling to the area or if you just want a basic history lesson on Harpers Ferry.
