Palgrave Study Guides: Literature

How To Study A Shakespeare Play

Rate this book
This is an alternate cover edition for ISBN: 9780333641262

‘Instead of a student embarking upon the reading of a play with a vague sense of dread that he or she will ultimately have something intelligent to say about it, the readers of this book are equipped to tackle any kind of Shakespeare play with a set of logical steps which lead to the level of understanding necessary if the product is to be a reasoned essay or answer to an examination question.’ - Kenneth Pickering, Speech and Drama

Shakespeare is often the first dramatist people study. You may have read, seen or even acted in plays, but Shakespeare may well be the first writer whose plays you are expected to analyse and discuss. This book provides a crystal-clear method of approaching Shakespeare’s plays.

In this thoroughly revised and expanded second edition, John Peck and Martin Coyle have added five important new chapters that illustrate the nature and impact of the new approaches to Shakespeare that have swept through literary studies: structuralism, post-structuralism, deconstruction, feminism, New Historicism and Cultural Materialism.

How to Study a Shakespeare Play is widely recognised by students as the best introductory guide to understanding and writing about Shakespeare’s plays. This second edition shows you how to take your studies further, and how to come to terms with the full range of current approaches to Shakespeare confronting students.

John Peck and Martin Coyle lecture in English at Cardiff University, and are general editors of the Macmillan New Casebooks and How to Study series.

Mildly helpful. But hyper focuses on certain plays rather than supplying generic info to help study.
