Demitri Vinetti knows his parents believe his claim that he’s gay is an act of rebellion. But when Demitri scents Kiernan Wabinaw at the diner where he works and the human keeps coming back again and again, he’s certain he’s found his mate, a male mate, proving Fate’s on his side. Getting advice from friends, Demitri digs deep for courage and asks Kiernan on a date.
Kiernan is shocked and flattered that such a handsome young man would take an interest in him, especially since his forty-fifth birthday is just around the corner. He’s been fantasizing about Demitri since first spotting him at the diner a couple of weeks ago, and he’s happy to take him up on his offer.
When Kiernan learns that Demitri’s parents beat him for going on a date with him, he discovers protective instincts he’s never known before. But the fact that Demitri’s less than half his age and his parents are abusive is only the first of many shockers. Will Kiernan be able to accept that shifters exist? Or will he chalk Demitri up as too much trouble and run the other way?
Demitri is a young shifter whose parents are unhappy that he is a) a shifter and b) gay. Like REALLY unhappy. Luckily for Demitri's it seems like maybe he is a really lucky shifter in that at 19, he has already found his mate. That his mate is a human and has no idea about shifters is a bit of a hiccup, but Demitri screws up his courage and asks Kiernan out after the man has been coming into the diner where Demitri works for a few weeks. Frankie and Vince help him work up his nerve and when Keirnan accepts, Demitri is cautiously excited. That excitement is somewhat short lives when after his first date with Kiernan, he comes home to discover his parents have already gotten word of his whereabouts.
Kiernan is most unhappy when he discovers that Demitri has been abused and he refuses to let him go back home. But that has dire consequences as well since Demitri's parents have no intention of letting their son go. Luckily the pack has their back. There are a few tense moments and Kiernan has a few lessons to learn, but luckily he figures out how to do the right thing.
I liked Kiernan and his possessive/protective nature regarding Demitri. I also like his daughter and their relationship. What I didn't like was the editing of this installment - there were QUITE a few name screwups in the text that should have been caught before publication. It was a bit jarring by about the 4th time it happened.
I have read all 17 books of this series and this is my favorite so far. This one seemed to have more of a plot than some of the others. I like the age difference between the MC's. The little bit of d/s was good two. A nice addition to the series. As always, I look forward to the next one.
I didn’t expect Demetri’s book this early in the series considering his age. I know all of these books are short but it just didn’t feel like much happened.
24 is old to still be in college, even doing a Master's unless you took a break. I wonder if there's a story there and if we'll hear it.
Rant about Kiernan's daughter:
45 is not old!!! It's smack dab middle aged!
She couldn't have made him even a little older than that? He's 19!
Age spots?? Does she mean liver spots? He's 44!
I think that by being blunt, Kiernan was being way too forward. Then the sock footed rubbing in the restaurant felt a little creepy.
Oh, right. This is the author who doesn't know what a butterfly kiss is. I wonder what she thinks it is.
He just happens to have a gun and it just happens to be loaded and just happens to not be locked up and he just happens to leave it in the end table downstairs, not the bedroom like most people... No guns don't kill people (as Eddie Izzard said, I'm pretty sure the gun plays a role), idiot assholes like this do. I hope this was only for effect and not how the author thinks it's okay to keep guns.
Why would the scientists not have lowly hooligans to do their dirty work?
Pretty good peril and action but I like my peril at the end so it's something you build up to. Not a lot of plot and everything was so black and white: evil and insane bad guys, perfect sweet and understanding good guys. Even the daughter was made out to be sweet.
It took me by surprise- though it shouldn't have- that young Demitri who was a minor character in the last few books got his story told in this one. Once it got going, I ached for this poor boy's lot in life and loved the special man that Ms. Richards picked out for his mate.
Demitri works in a diner to save money to move out of his bigotted parents' home and get a place of his own. His parents are bigotted on two fronts- his being a shifter and his being gay. The bigotry over the shifter thing leaves him confused because his mother is a shifter. While on the job waiting tables, Demitri encounters a human middle-aged divorced man, Kiernan, who is his mate.
Kiernan is starting to feel sad and depressed about getting older now that his daughter is on her own and he is left with the thought that he may never find someone to love and who will love him. His ray of hope is the cute young guy who waits his table at the diner. Kiernan is attracted to Demitri and is thrilled when Demitri asks him out.
Their date goes well and they agree to meet again, but then Kiernan learns that Demitri was beaten badly by his own dad as a result of Demitri going out with him. The beating leads to Kiernan learning a tough fact about Demitri that he's not sure he can accept as well as puts Demitri in further danger.
This story had a slightly darker tone than the usual fare from this author making the story resonate deeply with me. Demitri was a sympathetic character because though he's a wolf shifter, he's a gentle young man that his bully of a father takes advantage of. Kiernan is a strong man yet tender so he's perfect for Demitri. I liked how he had to take some time to wrap his mind around seeing his lover turn into a wolf. The battle with the scientists is present in this one and revealed in a shocking way. I loved that teaser near the end about the ongoing threat of the captive Raven.
May December romances are fraught with problems even before they begin. Why would either want to be with the other? Is the younger guy looking for a Sugar Daddy? Is the older man a cradle robber? Going through a midlife crisis? While the sex might be great - what else do they have in common? How soon before the younger guy tires of his older lover? How could the older man possibly keep up with the younger guy? Often the older man is subconscious about the signs of aging displayed by his body: age spots, crow's feet, softer around the middle, waning sexual prowess. And sometimes the younger guy worries that he'll be replaced with a younger model in a few weeks/months/years?
Then there is the interference from those outside the relationship. Wondering why they are together? Crudely speculating. Angry parents of the younger guy and embarrassed children of the older man. Everyone seems to have an opinion and are not afraid to voice it.
I particularly enjoy May December stories where the older man is divorced with older or younger children and an Ex-wife who is not completely out of the picture. Talk about fireworks!! I think Charlie Richards did a really good job in writing this story. I am very glad I finally chose to read it. It was a bit longer than many of her other stories so things were more developed.
There is so much drama in this story I couldn't wait to read about what happened: mad scientist, brainwashed shifters, shocked & terrorized Human mate, love at first sight, mean parents, vicious beating, stealth attack, intervention by the Alpha, dominant & submissive personalities, sweet gentle ambitious, feisty daughter, and unexpected friendship. This story has it all.
Freeing Demitri’s Wolf is book seventeen in the Wolves of Stone Ridge series by Charlie Richards. As with any long series, sometimes the plots and characters can get stale, but in this installment I found the pace picking back up and the series back on track.
With two of my all time favorite tropes in this novel, May-December romance and hurt-comfort, this book packs a little punch. Demitri is the May part of the equation, while Kiernan is the older man. If this wasn’t a paranormal book, I might have a problem believing that a nineteen year old and a man in his mid-forties could last long-term as a couple, but because Demitri is a shifter I went with it. I also loved the fact it was Demitri who initially pursued Kiernan, his human mate. The romance between the two main characters was one of the best things about the book. I was rooting for Demitri and Kiernan to get the HEA by the end of the book.
The best part? No Insta-Love, just a nice slow build between the two main characters that made sense considering the abusive way Demitri’s parents reacted to the news he was going to date a man. In my opinion, this series just gets better and better with each installment and this one seemed to have more of a plot to it than just shifters falling in love.
So, if you like a dash of May-December spice added to your shifter books, served up with a huge slice of hurt-comfort, then Freeing Demitri’s Wolf would be for you.
Kiernan Wabinaw is almost midpoint in his human life; he does not feel old but really somewhat lived and dinged up a bit. So why is it he can’t stop thinking about the handsome really young delicious waiter at the diner? It’s not a crime to want to be near him even if it is as a customer or to hear his soft breathy voice or see him smile with those glossy lips. Who says a man his age can’t fantasize about a cutie with beautiful striking eyes. When said cutie asked him on a date….yeah he was going to accept and secretly do a happy jig. All Kiernan knows is that Demitri is different and an opportunity he can’t deny. Demitri Vinetti is fighting for his independence and trying hard to move out of his parent’s home. He wishes he had a better domestic family life but the cards didn’t play out that way for him. No the cards dealt to him are filled with disappointment and pain. It is so freaking hard to do what he needs to do; being submissive does not help his cause. Yet fate placed Kiernan on his path and he has no intention ignoring their gift. Now he has to see if Kiernan is interested, he thinks he is, than tell him he is a wolf shifter and his fated mate….no problems there. All while not letting anyone know his painful secret. Can the otherworldly bond between these two men be enough to ignite a forever? Their journey is beautiful as it is hard to read. Your protective instincts will be triggered and your emotions will be challenge.
I love this series and I'm always waiting for the next books to get my fix of shifter-love ;)
This one was particularly enjoyable for me because I'm a sucker for the "strong, older, protective guy meets young man in trouble" scenario. Gets me every damn time. Plus, the cover was my undoing ;) This guy will always reminds me of Jay.
Demitri is in deep shit, with an unloving, controlling family, and a mate who comes to the diner where he works every so often. Although he's happy to find his mate at the tender age of nineteen, he's also shy. But with a little nudge from his friends, he finally asks Kiernan out.
Kiernan is great. I like his possessiveness, the way he takes care of his younger lover and protects him from his crazy parents. Aside from the parents, there are some more obstacles. First is the age difference, which concerns Kiernan very much. Second is the fact that Demitri is a wolf. When Kiernan finds out, he's a bit freaked out. Understandable, I think. And although Demitri is hurt when Kiernan sends him away so he can think about the whole thing, his reaction is understandable. It's what a grown-up man would do and I like that Kiernan acts his age and not like a teenager.
I liked the passion between them. Their sex is hot, yet so full of love and devotion. Kiernan is the perfect partner for cute Demitri.
For a while it was really good. If you accept Kiernan’s focus on sex. Not a huge fan of his dominance either, but that happens a lot, so I can ignore it.
Then Kiernan had his meltdown and that was what really doused my enthusiasm. It still made for a nice story, no question there, but yeah. Through that it missed being entirely satisfying. In the end I feel a little sorry for Demitri, since the relationship feels just a tad uneven. And I did not need the scientists back story to be revived in this way.
Nope. The summary sucked me in––the writing had me running for the hills. It's bad.
The characters are pretty good, though, as is the concept. Young, abused werewolf x older, dominant human; intriguing enough of a dynamic that made me want to keep reading, even when the writing was a pain. Ultimately, I decided that I'd write something of my own, borrowing the dynamic from this story and hopefully giving it the justice it so dearly deserves.
Won't be reading the others in this series. Sorry.
I really like the diversity in the Stone Ridge wolf pack. And I like the cohesion of the characters from previous stories that thread the all of the books.
This one was a bit different in that the dominant of the couple was a slightly older human to the submissive and very young shifter. The 20+ year age gap did not put me off at all. I don't know if it's because it was a shifter story, two men, or what, but Kiernan and Demitri mesh well for me.
This book is one of my least liked books in the series. I don't like D/S books, especially ones where the Dom orders the Sub to do stuff that is for the Doms enjoyment and not so much the subs (“Strip and I’ll let you suck me for a moment while I prepare myself.”) Not to my taste at all. But everyone has different likes so I will give it 4 stars for the story and writing, as for my rating on my taste of books I would give it 2 stars to the Stories I like. But with that said, on to the next...
I felt that this was better written than the some of Ms. Richard recent released. The *conflict* was interesting and different than what I have read.
So, although it wasn't a big standout, it was enjoyable read. I didn't realize I was almost finishing book when I noticed that I was already at 90% which I think it is a good sign.
First read 12-21-13 Demitri and Kiernan. I really liked Kiernan. I also loved how Demitri just went with things and didn't try to hide from Kiernan. His mate offered and Demitri took him up on it. It was nice to see that he didn't fight it. I also liked how Kiernan had someone to talk to at the end there. I think it really helped.
Much like Stormy Glenn, Charlie Richards infuses her stories with just enough intrigue and endearing romance to make it possible for to me overlook bad writing. Not great, but a pleasant way to pass the time if you're in the mood for some sappy m/m shifter fun. Be warned that Richards sucks at dirty talk. The sex scenes can be a little awkward at times.
She has stories usually make me sad knowing that the younger MC will one day end up alone. Not so in Wolves of Stone Ridge since human mates match their shifter partners in longevity. The protectiveness and caring of the older human to the young shifter checked all my boxes.
The characters were great, but I thought the plot with his parents thin and grasping at straws. Also Demitri's mate sounded kinda condescending at times. It was a fun read and excellent addition to the series though.
Demitri's family turned out to be helping the scientists. His mate is an older male is parents are not happy. Kiernan daughter was glad he was happy. A couple of mistakes not bad but there Demitri was called Declan.
