This is like the x-rated, porny version of Dangerous Liaisons., and that’s not a compliment.

The H, Valmont, is basically prostituting himself with the much older and even nastier OW, Marquise de Mertuil. Then there’s the heroine whose personality is changed from the poor seduced dove in the movie to a seduced feminist, social warrior that is sex on wheels. Historical accuracy is not a thing in this book.

Minus a million stars for H and the OW's very graphic sexapades that go on for over a third of the book, and they ain’t pretty. The heroine gets her time too as the the H is a stallion an Arabian one just like his stallion. Most romantic encounter? Hmmm, their sex in the the brothel right after the h sees him trying to prove his love by protecting her by ogling (and more) a prostitute. There’s more wrong with that sentence than just being a run-on sentence.

The evil, evil OW gets slapped, but that’s a mere drop in the bucket to what should have happened. Honest to Pete, when will authors realize that appropriate comeuppance is almost as important as a good HEA.

I’ve been binging Ted Lasso so I am going to let the adorable &!#*$ Roy Kent take this one….

Wow. This worked for me. I was in the right mood for what Melanie George served up in The Pleasure Seekers: this was hot, it has a revenge plot with NO big misunderstanding, and male courtesans - of sorts.

Caine (and boy if that ain't foreshadowing) currently hates himself for selling his body + sexual prowess to Olivia the widow in exchange for living/haunting Northcote Abbey. Northcote Abbey was Caine's ancestral home but when his father was unable to pay his debts and killed himself, the abbey was then sold to the a willing bidder, Olivia's husband, now deceased.

Caine is a penniless Earl, after having lost the rest of what was left of his inheritance on gambling, in order to try to make enough to win the abbey back. So, now he is at the whim of a very mean woman with insatiable sexual appetites, Olivia.

Caine's existence is sulking around the abbey and being trotted out during dinner parties for Olivia to show off to her friends.

At one such party, Caine sees Lady Bliss. He finds her beautiful but Olivia informs her that she is the daughter of the duke who held his father's debts, and whom Caine hates and blames for his father's suicide. Olivia, doing her best imitation of Dangerous Liasons, tells Caine that she will give him Northcote Abbey if he can seduce Bliss and make her fall in love with him (If she wins, she gets to have his child).

What I liked about The Pleasure Seekers is the hate-to-love chemistry between Caine and Bliss. Melanie George is quite good at doing arguments so even Caine's back-and-forth with Olivia was enjoyable and I wished for the same sort of emotion when Caine met Bliss. And so it was! Caine and Bliss get off on the wrong foot but they can't deny their physical attraction to each other.

But what impressed me the most about The Pleasure Seekers was that Bliss didn't give a shit about Olivia's manipulations. Bliss cares about the working class, as her father is passionate about education reform for the poor, and as we're also told that she is also an artist and part-French, this is why she doesn't bat an eyelash when she finds out Caine's situation.

She also doesn't believe Olivia's lies later on when it's clear Olivia's just trying to get to her. Bliss knows Caine is forced in a situation that he would not choose to be in and she is loyal to him. Bliss's loyalty to Caine was empowering because she was able to see past Olivia's lies and stand up for herself.

I would have found not only Bliss a weaker character but the story much more predictable if Bliss believed Olivia. So yay to Bliss!

And I really liked Caine. He was smooth and even when he was an asshole, it was spicy. He sarcastically calls Bliss "your highness" the first few times, and I liked that lol.

But yes, Bliss was awesome. She saved Caine's ass *and* got back his horse. Yay!

Caine reminded me of Gideon in Evangeline Collins' Her Ladyship's Companion because he had a big chip on his shoulder about being a stud horse. This is the obvious internal conflict for males who are also courtesans/sleep with someone to pay off a debt, and I would be interested to see a different take on this hero.

Some turns of phrases involving water were poetic:

"The glass and brass scones lining the walls cast a golden glow on the highly polished floors, making the wood look like still, dark water."

"He was like the tide, pushing her away and pulling her back, needing her but not wanting her, leaving her emotions in a constant state of upheaval."

This also reminded a bit of Anne Mallory's The Bride Price. I'm not sure what it is but it feels fuzzily similar in terms of general feelings: an heir (of sorts) who's pissed off about not having his inheritance, who is resentful to the heroine, decides to seduce her with spicy times, but then ends up falling sweetly for her.

*spoiler warnings*

Loved this book but 2 major gripes keep me from giving it a full 5 stars. Caine was a deliciously tortured hero and Bliss a passionate, strong woman. They're romance was powerful and sexy as hell. Olivia was a perfect villaness, the scene where she's tearing Cain down and exposing his deepest shame and secrets to Bliss was one of my most favorite scenes in the book, just so powerful! I sincerely hoped someone would drop kick her off a cliff. Speaking of cliffs, one of the only two things I have to gripe about is Cain's belief that Bliss's father was responsible for his father's suicide because Caine's father owed him money and was denied an extension by Bliss's father(or so we're led to believe for the first half of the book) Bliss's father of course denies this and this would have been the perfect opportunity for a mistaken identity twist where someone evil (friend of Olivia's?)pretended to be Bliss's father when Caine's father went to him but no, that 'little' fact (on which Caine's who revenge scheme was pinned to) is explained away with Caine deciding 'oh perhaps I was drunk and misunderstood what my father was telling me) Um. No. Weak resolution of major plot point. The second weak resolution comes when Caine is accused of killing St. Giles (a cohort of Olivia who was interested in Bliss) and it turns out that the husband of one of the women Giles was sleeping with found out about that and killed him. Very weak. It would have been much more satisfying if it had been Olivia that killed Giles and set Caine up. Olivia never gets her comeuppance. Our couple lives happily ever after but the resolutions of their major obstacles left me really unsatisfied.

Nicely written
The sexual chemistry clearly plays a major role in the story and sometimes overlooks the plot, which is though quite good. I liked the originality of the beginning : an earl rake kept-man to an older and horrid peeress, who has convinced her late-husband to purchase the property of the earl at auctions organized to settle his and his father's debts. Caine is really a rake : often drunk (although no mentions of hangover could be found...), formerly the leader of the pleasure seekers club, with absolutely no self-esteem remaining. He makes a wager with his mistress : seduce and be loved by Lady Bliss Ashton and get his family home back or give the old witch his child.
Bliss has obviously a cartlandesque ridiculous first name, is a feminist before the time comes, a slightly renowned painter, half-French, half-English. She was nicely depicted but has a major flaw : she succombs and forgives Caine so easily every time, I was getting riled at each of their encounters.

I really struggled with reading this, just didn't get into it. Once the h leaves the H's home (last third of the story) it just lost the thread of the story and was all over the place. It didn't help that for being set around the time of the french revolution it certainly didn't give me a feel for the times or the mores. If anything it actually read, in relationship terms, as thoroughly modern. The h is supposed to be a non-conformist but never the less that doesn't jibe with the it'll 'ruin' her revenge. And at the end the H blowing hot and cold had me rolling my eyes.

In fact my review is a reflection of how I felt about the book, all over the place.

This book definitely had the "other woman". Not sure the whole story why and how Caine became Olivia's kept man but...
The plot was mostly unique. I felt like the characters could have gotten to know each other better, though. The romance was very fast, but then for Caine, it was a wager. This book also had a touch of secret baby, though it was more of a secret pregnancy.
Also, it was remarkable how many times Bliss wouldn't give up on Caine. She was so willing to fight for their love until the end.
Ohhhh and omg that one chapter around page 277 where everything was revealed was super delicious.

I’m disappointed. I don’t like the pace of the book but I muddled thorough. I have sympathy for Cain the way that her jerked Blaze around was infuriating and unattractive. There was also so much more drama (ecspecially towards the end) the wasn’t necessary.

Loved A LOT of this book. The heroine is such a badass. She a fighter for women's rights and also loves pointing out double standards between the sexes.

Our hero is epically tortured. And what an interesting concept for a historical - the idea of a male peer being kept as a type of consort.

Certain resolutions in this bothered me, but ultimately this hard fought love won me over.
