Two women from different worlds. Linda, a successful psychologist, uses her work to distance herself from her own loneliness. Christina works for a sex hotline to make ends meet. Their worlds collide when Linda calls Christina’s sex line. Christina quickly realizes Linda is not her usual customer. Instead of wanting phone sex, Linda makes an unexpected proposition. Does Christina dare accept the offer that will change both their lives?
Alison has been writing since the age of ten. Her first works were poems and short stories; then she wrote her first novel-length book when she was eleven. It was a Star Trek: The Next Generation fanfiction. In addition to writing, Alison likes spending her spare time with her friends. The vegetarian also loves cooking and baking. If she’s got enough time, she reads books about history and about social and political sciences.
Now THAT was chemistry. Contract for Love was my first Alison Grey read and now Hot Line has proven it, she really excels at writing romance. She did in under 70 pages what most can't achieve in 200+. The dialogue just flows and the connection between Christine and Linda was established barely two pages in. Characters, especially Linda, was really interesting.
This is exactly what I needed for a so-so kind of day. I went in, hoping for some story attached to erotica and got so much more: FLUFF!!! And sex, but Christina and Linda's awkwardness sold this novella for me. It was majorly adorable and written in a clear manner without any pretentious prose.
Back to the awkwardness. I realized I haven't read enough romances filled with long pauses, reasonable misunderstandings, and acknowledgement of cuteness. I swear, their chemistry was beyond cute and realistic. I really wasn't expecting to enjoy everything this much. A pleasant happening, indeed. I'd love to see more of their relationship. Linda and Christina's characters have more to offer, but the current girl-meets-girl story hit all the right spots.
Though it is a little shorter than I would have liked and the cover just a tad more risque than I usually go for, Hot Line by Alison Grey is just wonderful. It has everything: very likable characters, a plot that is skillfully made believable by a talented writer and a truly loving and adorable romance to go with that plot.
Right from the moment Christina ("Chantal" to her callers on the sex line) and Linda connect on the phone, the chemistry between them is beguiling. Both women, it soon turns out, are each vulnerable in their own way and that only adds to the endearing qualities that make Hot Line so great! The fact that Christina is carefully guarded but so deeply enchanted by Linda and that Linda, herself even more shy when giving away her heart, is a virgin and touchingly childlike at times make the story very unique. I absolutely love that Linda's virginity is not a problem for Christina nor a sign that she is any less a lesbian for being so.
Even the cover, the only thing that was a tiny problem for me, suggests a certain part of the vulnerability that runs so sweetly through Hot Line.
Sweeter than I expected, given the premise. Like another reviewer said, this is one I would like to see an epilogue for.
2016 re-read: I stand by the 4 star rating. I still love the premise and I love how the sex work aspect is handled. Full review here: http://www.thelesbianreview.com/hot-l...
I thought this was an okay read. Technically speaking, the prose sometimes felt stilted (was this written in German first and then translated?) and I would have to backtrack to figure out who's perspective I was in because there's a certain amount of head hopping between Christina and Linda.
Mainly, I wasn't sold on Linda's character. She's depicted as hot, a successful therapist, and a virgin. Though she was assertive, she was also child-like and I couldn't wrap my head around how she could come so far in life yet have absolutely no one intimate, friendship or relationship wise, in either her past or present, ever. I also got the impression she wasn't the best therapist but that's just me. :P
I did like Christina's character more and the story itself is meant to be a heartwarming, optimistic read.
It's a fairly light novella that can be read in an afternoon and, if you go into it expecting a fluffy feel-good story, you may like this.
Judging this book by its cover and reading the synopsis, I really didn't expect the story I ended up reading. Admittedly when reading the first couple of pages I wondered what on earth was going on with Christina (aka Chantal). I mean agreeing to sleep with someone you have never met at their home without anyone knowing where you are and who you're with sounds like the beginning of a lesbian horrorfic.
Imagine my surprise when I end up wanting to give Linda a hug. Sweet and shy Linda who invites Christina to her home in Berlin to spend time with her. Sure sex is the main factor of her extending the invitation but who would have thought they would have such an instant connection not to mention attraction.
This was a sweet and short read. The only (very minor) thing that I noticed was that because it was translated from German some things just sounded off like certain phrases. Too bad it's not available in German to read as well.
If you're looking for something short and sweet I highly recommend this book.
From the title and cover you would never suspect that this is a sweet love story. I wanted to come up with a different term than what many others called it, but a sweet love story it is. It ends abruptly, I wanted to read more. I guess this way the reader can fill in their own happy ending.
Hot Line by Alison Grey Okay, Now that I wiped my eyes, I can write a review. Linda and Christina are worlds apart in life. It is the high-rent district and the average woman. Their meeting is very beautiful and very unexpected under the circumstances. They can't see each other all they know is a voice. Their words are all spontaneous. Alison Grey put me in both of their shoes. I could feel my heart beating in both bodies. I was cheering for them instantly. When they arrived at the first restaurant and neither was hungry I knew I was in for a wonderful reading experience. Their questions to each other were perfect. The way they see each other and express themselves to me seemed so organic. They took the words out of my mouth. An adorable book. It is not lengthy. My eyes were watery many times and not for bad reasons. 5 stars without question. I do wish I found out exactly where they were in say a year or two.
This has a different premise from most lesfic, in that it involves a phone sex operator and a virgin. Both characters are interesting and you get a pretty good feel for them, even though it's a novella. It's a pretty straightforward, sweet story, and a nice way to spend half an hr.

This short story would be better if it were longer and things didn’t happen super fast. I enjoyed it anyways, but still... I think the speedy tempo of how their relationship started and evolved ruined things for me. But I did like all the awkwardness that was happening because it felt real and relatable hehe Overall, it’s an okay read.
Sweet and well done, I think. I wish I could read German. There were a few spots where the translation made the sentences awkward but it was easy to overlook.
I'd probably go 3.5 but I liked it enough to round up.
Very simply written with a short story ending - though pretends to be a novel of 135 pages! It might be when it grows up. Kept me entertained and Alison writes with a breathless expectation that is highly engaging.

I decided to read this book after reading a book where the author collaborated with Jae who is a favourite of mine. I enjoyed the quirkiness of the characters and the beginning was interesting because I wanted to see where the author was going to take the story but by the end i unfortunately was no longer as invested in the relationship because I didn't feel that Christina was interested in Linda at all while Linda was like a love sick puppy and by the time I reached the end I was left feeling sorry for Linda because it just seemed like an unevenly balanced relationship in which Christina would always hold all the power, which I found rather ironic considering that Linda was the one with all the power at the beginning of the book.
I think I might have enjoyed this book a bit more if Linda had developed a bit more by the end of the book and if Christina didn't seem to only want to be with her as an afterthought.
A heartwarming story about Linda, a highly successful young therapist who is also exceptionally attractive. It's difficult to think that such a charming individual requires the services of a sex line worker. Christina, who works part-time to help pay for her schooling, is a representation for this profession. Linda and Christina's dialogue does not follow a predictable pattern. That could be one of the reasons why the sex line worker treats Linda so differently. Their connection deepens step by step, or rather call by call, as the reader cheers them up.
It's a well-written short story set in Germany, so we get to see interesting places like Cologne and Berlin. In addition, the MCs have unique personalities that are both restrained and adventurous.
I really liked this one! It is shorter story, however I found it very sweet and easy to read. One for sure that was pretty much hard to put down. I do wish I could see the story go further. It is because I like to know what is next.
I just blasted through this book in less than 2 hours.
It was a little strange, and not what I usually read. But I just couldn't put it down. It was a great short book.
This is my second book from Ylva Publishing and I'm definitely glad that a friend recommended them. I will be reading more from this publisher without a doubt.
This was a sweet story that left me with the warm and fuzzies in my chest. I feel it was very well written and enjoyable. It is a light and fluffy story but the characters were complex and interesting. I do not mean this as criticism at all! Its like a feel good drama you might see on the telly and it works. I very much enjoyed this book!
I read this without realising that its a short story. I usually don't like to read short stories because I like books with full relationship development. But I was drawn in from the first page. This book is about extreme loneliness and the author wrote it so well that it didn't feel like an erotica.
This was cute and i enjoyed it. I found the ending to be rushed (yes I know it was a novella). Everything else seemed well placed so to have it end the way it did was odd for me. I give it 3.5 stars.
