Ruth J. Hartman spends her days herding cats, and her nights spinning mysterious tales that make you smile. She, her husband, and their cats love to spend time curled up in their recliners watching old Cary Grant movies. Well, the cats sit in the people's recliners. Not that the cats couldn't get their own furniture. They just choose to shed on someone else's.

Ruth, a left-handed, cat-herding, farmhouse-dwelling mystery writer uses her goofy sense of humor as she writes tales of klutzy women who find trouble without even trying. Ruth's husband and best friend, Garry, reads her manuscripts, rolls his eyes at her weird story ideas, and loves her in spite of her insistence that all of her books have at least one cat in them.

Ruth Hartmans's recent foray into Regency romance has proven successful. I'm so glad I got the chance to read Rescued by a Duke. Though it started out quite dirty...literally.

Sasha Douglas fell into an abandoned well while trying to avoid going to debtor's prison as punishment for her dead brother's debts. Cold, dirty, and injured, she fears no one will hear her screaming for help. But, her prayers are answered as the property owner happens by on his horse, none other than Garrett Rothchild Canterbury, the Duke of Ravensworth.

Garrett feels so guilty about Sasha falling into his well that he takes her back to his home and ensures she is nursed back to health. His parents are dead and his brother is a prodigal son, so Garrett's been running the estate alone. He never had the time or heart to think of marriage. But, fate brought Sasha into his life. Their growing romance is funny, sweet, and touching, but having been lied to so often by her brother, Sasha demands nothing but honesty now. And Garrett's secrets may tear them apart for good.

This story proved to be a quick and lovely read. If I fell into a well, I'd want none other than Garrett to come to my rescue. He's so kind-hearted, you can't help but fall in love with him along with Sasha. And of course, there's Douglas the cat, who provides at least one side-splitting moment. I can always count on Ruth to add a quirky feline to her stories!

The only gripe I had was with the climax. It didn't come as much of a surprise, though the emotions and impact were still there. In fact, I admired how Ruth explored some really heavy issues, while keeping the basic atmosphere of the story lighthearted.

For a sweet romance full of emotion, laughs, and an ending that brings out the "Awww" in you, I highly recommend this book! Go grab a copy today!

I love getting swept away into a Regency Romance by Ruth J Hartman!

I adored her main characters, Sasha and Garrett. Sasha is a lonely young lady, down on her luck and the last remaining person in her family. Her brother tragically dies and leaves Sasha to fend for herself. She is a strong woman but feels lost, while trying to outrun her brother's past. She is wandering through a field when she stumbles and falls, into a deep well. She fears that she will die there and there will be no one to mourn her, or her beloved family members.

Garrett is a handsome, hardworking and caring duke. He has no desire to find a wife who he does not love. He has suffered his share of loss, as well. He is out tending to his duties, when he stumbles upon the unthinkable.

Sasha and Garrett will make you fall in love, laugh along and cry with them. They have a lot of obstacles to overcome, but in the end it will be well worth it!

Ruth writes an amazing story, that will have you believing you are actually apart of her book. You will feel all of her characters emotions and want to do everything in your power to help them.

Thank you Ms Hartman, for another wonderful book.

My rating 3.5/5 stars Blog post: Rescued by a Duke

This is a sweet and pleasant love story about Sasha, a poor but charming woman, and the wealthy yet kind Duke of Ravensworth. These two meet each other under unusual circumstances; Sasha incautiously falls into a well and injures herself, but fortunately is saved by the Duke, hence the title Rescued by a Duke.
Even though the two meet during a singular incident, they are immediately attracted to each other.

The romance is really cute and heart-warming. I love how the Duke doesn't care that Sasha isn't a member of high society, he knows he loves her and that is all that matters.

The second half of the book is really good. It was intense with a bit of drama.

The story is quite predictable and a bit short for my liking, but apart from that I enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it to those who are looking for a sweet and clean romance story.

The title tells it all, but it’s what happens after the rescue that’s important. This is a sweet Regency love story with a bit of a different setting and plot. Sasha isn’t out to trap a duke and Garrett isn’t marriage-shy. Even villain Lucien is an interesting secondary character who shows so much remorse for his misdeeds I felt his actual fate should’ve been given. If I’ve any complaints with this story, it’s the use of a single phrase a little too much.

A definite departure for author Hartman and a delightful tale which will entertain the reader as it speeds toward his Happily Ever After ending.

I really enjoyed this sweet story about a young girl who falls into a well and is rescued by a duke. Little does she imagine what all the duke will rescue her from. I like how the author explores the importance of forgiving one another.

Honestly, if I could rate this negative stars, I would. There were so many factors that made me utterly dislike this.

- It was contradicting that Garrett didn't want Sasha to work for him as a maid because it reminded him of his dead sister, but he had other maids. Plus, I thought Garrett was protecting Sasha's reputation? But why did he kept on taking her out?

- I already had a hunch that Lucien, Garrett's brother, killed Samuel, Sasha's brother. But it took 6 more chapters to reveal the truth.

- Sasha's over-analyzing attitude grated on my nerves. It was sooo young adult. And the repetitions on how she was not the woman for him just added the annoyance.

- And seriously?! How can an arrogant jerk be a shameless party-crasher then a milksop curled into a fetal position the next?

I stopped reading chapter 13 because it was too dragging and giving me a headache. Reading books is supposed to help me relax, not make me more agitated.

Sasha Douglas is alone in life, after having just lost her brother to a pointless tavern brawl. She ends up falling into an abandoned well and thinking that no one will be able to hear her cries for rescue. Miraculously she is heard by a passerby, her savior is none other than the Duke of Ravensworth. Her rescue is just the catalyst for a new life she could never have imagined for herself.

Garrett Rothchild Cantlebury, the 5th Duke of Ravensworth comes across a girl trapped in an abandoned well, one that has bad memories for him. He brings her to his home to treat her injuries and to convalesce. He feels guilty, and thinks that finding the identity of her brother’s killer is a start to making amends. Little does he know that finding out the truth might lead to shocking revelations for the both of them.

Most of Garrett’s time has been spent on running his estate, never getting help from his dissolute younger brother. Rescuing Sasha changes that. Getting caught in a compromising position by a well-minded busy-body along with his brother’s unwanted attentions toward Sasha has them marrying quickly. In order to find love together they will have to get past old tragedies and the revelations from solving her brother’s murder.

I was expecting a regency romance, but a lot of the actions and personalities of the people tended to be out-of-character for the period. The emotions and decisions of the characters tended to happen quickly and had a tendency to be rather dramatic. While the secondary characters added color and humor to the story their descriptions and actions leaned toward the exaggerated.

Personally, I LOVED this story! I loved the way that Garrett looked past society's "norms" and manged to find romance with a woman who wasn't altogether what she seemed (nor was she someone whom society would accept). I loved the mystery of who killed Sasha's brother, and how would she ever move on?

The characters in this story each brought something to the table, from the troubled Duke haunted by a past he had no control over, to Phillbush's allergy to cats (and reactions to said animal), to Lucien's secrets, no two characters were the same. And while I had my own opinions of just who was guilty of what, I felt that everything was handled in a way that made sense (even when I didn't agree with Sasha taking the stance she did given her own secrets). It was that human flaw that was present in the main characters, and that overall need to protect the other that made this story feel human. And that is what I enjoy most, a story that I can see happening regardless of how other people may view it.

This was one of those stories in which I found myself totally invested. I laughed with these characters. I became heartbroken with these characters. I wanted to smack certain ones upside the head. In short - it had everything that a good novel should.

Overall, I would recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys a sweet and clean historical romance where the characters may not conform to society's standards, but they are lovable nonetheless.

Down the rabbithole

This is, in true Ruth J Hartman fashion, a very sweet story. A typical girl meets boy story. Except, first, she falls down the well. And he rescues her. AND he is a Duke, and falls in love with her, and spends the rest of the story trying to figure out what that means.
The characters, while standard, are well developed. As is normal, Ruth's villain has a character that allows us to feel for him, and to hope that somehow his story turns out much better than it appears to be heading.
