Queen of Broken Hearts #1

Queen of Broken Hearts

Rate this book
Con artist is a little too strong a descriptor for Birdie Anders. She prefers the term "Fabrication Specialist."

Taking over her high school was easy for a girl whose mother fabricated her way into becoming a Hollywood movie star. Now Birdie just has to keep her minions under control while maintaining her perfect image. Oh, and make sure no one digs up her criminal record.

Things are about to get less than perfectly boring.

The criminal-record-inducing love-of-her-life is back in town, and he's determined to crash her life into the un-sparkly rocks.

Losing is for losers.

Birdie isn't about to lose everything she's fought for to a boy. She needs to execute the ultimate take down before her crown gets lost in the scuffle. But the real problem might be keeping her traitorous heart from getting in the way.

I’d like to thank NetGalley and All Night Reads for providing me with a free copy in Exchange for an honest review.

This book left me confused. I thought it was about a con artist. What I apparently got was a book about high school pecking order. Birdie (the most normal name in a book with characters named Painkiller, Songbird, Lightbulb… I mean, seriously?) is the reigning Queen of Hearts at a school where every single kid is somehow a part of Hollywood. It wasn’t that clear what a Queen of Heart does, only that girls are constantly overthrowing the reigning Queen.

While it wasn’t boring, I kept waiting for the con artist things to show up. All I got was a girl with a deranged mother, that does some crazy stuff (don’t see how exactly robbing a bank is being a con artist) and will do anything to keep her status at school. Given more pages and more editing, this could have been far better.

why are these people called lightbulb, popsicle, skittle, and songbird? why does Birdie think she needs enforcers? and who cares if one of them is facebook friends with Miley Cyrus? Just the sample of this book confused the heck out of me, I'm not reading the rest!

Thanks for saving me this pain Rachel!

0.5 stars - Review copy provided by All Night Reads for an honest review.

I was really hoping that Queen of Broken Hearts would be something funny, light-hearted and carefree because I haven't had much luck with any of my other books these last few weeks. Unfortunately that was not the case. I don’t know what else to say about it really. I didn't understand a single thing that was written. If I was asked to a short description about this book I would be stumped. I wouldn't know where to start. Not a single thing or event that happened in this book made an ounce of sense. I feel like I picked up the third book in a series, a series where someone accidentally shredded all the pages and stuck them back to together in a random order hoping for the best.

The characters were weird - and that isn't a compliment. They were bitchy and made irrationally decisions about things that made sense only to themselves. I couldn't understand a single one of them, least of all Birdie.

Do not even get me started on the character’s names. I understand that it’s kind of a “thing” now to name your characters with unusual and quirky name but this just border-lined insanity! I mean Birdie is pretty bad to start with but then we had Painkiller. Yes, Painkiller! and there was Skittle. Lightbulb, Grass, Popsicle, Lizard, Largesse and Wizard. These are not names and it seems almost cruel to name yours characters so. I mean really, Lightbulb?

I am sorry to say that I will not be continuing on with any of the sequels and won’t be checking out any more of the author’s work either. This was very poorly planned out and was not worth my time. I would not recommend this to anyone, in fact, I would probably stop anyone from trying to read it!

Jennifer Recchio you wrote in you acknowledgements: Thanks to Joe for reading the awful first draft and saying, “Actually, this plot makes no sense.” Maybe you should have paid closer attention to this advice and rewrote this book with an actual plot!

Read the review on my blog here: Sandra's World of Books

Let's just admit that I really like the cover. I am not a fan of people on the cover, I mentioned this millions of times before, but this works out. I love the font for the title a lot. You can guess a little where the book would be about by just seeing the cover. I would say it's about someone that breaks hearts that is famous. (The sunglasses). Which was a little true, but not completely.

So in this story we follow Birdie, which I think is a pretty odd name. Birdie has a criminal record and the love of her life is back in town, but he is keeping his distance. Lots of drama and romance. And it was a little bit cliche. And sometimes I'm just in the mood for a cliche kind of story. I love the blossoming romance between Birdie and Sam.

Okay. So what didn't I like about this book? It were the odd names of her classmates. Lightbulb?! Really?! Songbreeze?! Skittle?! Largresse?! Painkiller?! I probably wrote some of the names wrong, but I was really confused by these names. They just didn't make sense at all! I have heard some strange names, but these are definitely strange. Very strange.

This was a novella. But there is a part two, that I definitely want to read sometime. I liked this and I enjoyed it. It was a quick read and I really enjoy those kind of novel(las). I would recommend this one though, despite the weird names. I liked the writing a lot and you just wouldn't stop reading. I hope that the next one is also good!

Birdie was a bit of an annoying character. I didn't really like her, but she changed throughout the story, otherwise I would have thought it was a little too annoying and I might not have finished the book. I loved Sam! Sam is definitely my favorite character. Pak was a bit strange, he was keeping his distance a little bit too much. And Annabella was a lovely character too. I'm glad it worked out for me.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with an eARC. If you have read this one, tell me what you thought of it. If you haven't, would this be a book you would want to read?

It was funny. When most of the books these days where the main characters are teenaged tend to be so very dramatic and depressing it was a good change. It really made me laugh.
The second thing was that it was short. It somewhat made me sad but it totally worked this way. I just hope that there will be more by this author. Imagine my surprise when I discovered it's her only work.

The story is of Birdie and who else is to better tell it than Birdie herself?
A girl who knows how to lie, cheat, con and threaten she has totally been left without the lesson where they thought you to be honest.
And ok, I admit- after some thinking, the problems were actually not funny though the story really was!
She has several problems on her plate, including how to become The Queen of (Broken) Hearts!
And by the way, nothing supernatural about it!

I received this book from NetGalley. This book was very easy to read. It didn't require a lot of heavy thinking. It is a good book to read if you are looking for something quick to read. It was a bit confusing at times in the way that it had been written and sometimes I had to go back in the book so that I could clarify something. Birdie, as a character should have really irritated me but I actually quite liked her I absolutely loved Sam, possibly my favourite character out of the book, I do wish though that there had been more background to him. I also found myself slowly falling in love with Pak as well. I have seen that there is a sequel to this book so I hope that this will answer some of the questions that I have.

I received this free from the publishers via NetGalley

Birdie Anders is a thief and a con artist. Birdie Anders is about to lose her crown and she is determined a takedown before that happens.

It was an ok book. It was a quick read as it is only about 94 pages. Birdie is a fun character, she is a total bitch but she knows it. The other characters were a bit flat, and boring. The book would have probably have been better if it was longer. The romance was cute but a bit rushed and could have done with a little bit more development. It was a very unrealistic book, but it was enjoyable nevertheless.

Overall, it you are looking for a quick romance then I do suggest you have a look at this.

I received this novel from NetGalley.

This novel, although much like Easy A (A movie starring Emma Stone) is cleverly written and engaging. However, the main character seems to be lacking a little something. Her interactions with the other characters are the best part of the novel, her story itself is rather lack-lustre.

The writing is good, the thought behind the novella is clever but not all the way thought out, too many similarities to other books and movies. That being said, it is a good little time waster.

Very short and sweet, a great way to waste a few hours. This novel is perfect for any YA reader, or anyone who is a fan of reading about the rich and famous, even if it is the fraudulent rich and famous ;)

Cute. It's the first word that jumps into my mind after reading this.

Birdie is a little crazy. She's taken down other girls to get to the top - to be the QUEEN OF HEARTS - her "it" school's top girl.

But every year she has to fight again for this spot. She thought she was uncontested. She thought no one would dare run against her.

She thought wrong.

I loved the crazy beginning and how off kilter it is. Just stick with the story,it really does tie it all up.

and Sam was adorable, Pak was crazy, Annabelle was equally looney. And everyone is scared of Madison, but that's okay too.

Chad. Poor guy.

I love the cover, and from the description expected a fun read.

I was a bit disappointed though. The beginning made no sense at all, and it took me about a quarter of the book to get into it. For such a short read that was far too long.

Birdie is the queen bee of the mean girls and trying to hang onto her power by any means. Her posse is pretty flat...there's no real difference between the girls, other than hideous names.
The plot was ok, the book was ok overall. I didn't love it and I thought it was going to be better than it was.
