Lo hace con una probidad tan minuciosa y tan infatigable que seguirlo suele ser arduo, pese a los escrupulosos diagramas que complementan la exposición. The Persian King, el tercer relato de este libro, que al principio parece ser un juego a la manera de Las Mil y Una Noches es, al fin, una parábola del universo, no sin alguna inevitable incursión a las matemáticas.

Hinton tiene un lugar asegurado en la historia de la literatura. Sus Scientific Romances son anteriores a las sombrías imaginaciones de Wells. El mismo título de la serie prefigura de manera inequívoca el oleaje, al parecer inagotable, de obras de science-fiction que han invadido nuestro siglo.

Seçkideki ilk öykü Düzülke'nin tasarladığı dünyayı daha bilimsel bir temele oturtuyor, iki boyutlu bir dünyanın teknik çizimlerini gözler önüne seriyor. Diğer öykü "Pers Kralı" Benthamcı bir faydacı anlayışa yeni bir bakış getiriyor: eğer haz içermeyen hiçbir şeyi yapmayacaksak, bunun sonu hareketsizlik değil midir? Bunun için tanrısal bir varlığın acı duyulacak işlere rağmen içimize bir umut ekmesi gerekmez mi?

Matematik bunun neresinde? Şurasında: Tanrısal gücün hazzın ne kadarını desteklemesi, acının ne kadarını tüketmesi gerektiğine dair çarpımsal seriler kurulmuş, tane tane, işte sonuç olarak haz acı dengesinde binde yirmilik bir kayıp vardır denilebilmiş. Gerek var mıydı, bence yoktu. Yine de ilginç bir deneme.

Pers Kralı öyküsündeki dünya tasarımı bana özgün ve dünyamıza pek az da değse, anlamlara gebe geldi. Onun hatrına kitaba dört verdim.

First this is not a romance.
Second be prepared to give up the world like you know it, you thought it, you see it.
It’s curious to think you are just part of something not something…
The book is boring but with fancy ideas, more a mental puzzle than a theory.
Be prepared to cast out the self-element from your mind. Be brave!

A a Victorian book on mathematics and the 4th dimension should not be this entertaining. The middle ground between Flatland by Edwin Abbott Abbott and Jorge luis Borges

This contains a somewhat interesting story about an invisible woman, although the story began with a long, dull bit of pseudo philosophy. The rest of the book is a mess.
