I confess I've had a love affaire with vampires for several years now, especially warrior vampires, the kind found in the books of Sherrilyn Kenyon, Lara Adrian and JR Ward. Though I've been published in Regency Romance under the pseudonym Valerie King--and yes one of my Regency Novellas features a vampire--one day I woke up knowing I had to create my own contemporary world of the warrior vampire.

For some mystical, magical reason, early in the process, my vampires appeared with enormous beautiful wings and it has been the most amazing experience to include flight in my novels, in both battle scenes and scenes involving spectacle. My special vampire world, published by St. Martin's Press, is introduced in the first book called, ASCENSION (12-28-2010). The second book, BURNING SKIES (May of 2011), opens up the world a little bit more. And even as I write this, I'm on the final draft of my third novel, WINGS OF FIRE (September of 2011). What a thrill it has been to live with my ascended vampires through the creation of this extraordinary, multi-dimensional world!

For more information about my unique take on the vampire mythos, check out my website at carisroane.com and my book release video on YouTube by putting in the search phrase, Caris Roane Ascension.

With every hope you'll enjoy reading my books set in the World of Ascension, All my best, Caris Roane

And a new era begins! Second Earth has been saved, Greaves has been destroyed all is well... yeah right. The king is dead, long live the king. While Greaves has been destroyed he was brilliant enough to consider all the outcomes and he prepared for the worst. Yes even his own demise. Three generals and almost a million Death Vamps have survived to fight again. The battle for Second Earth is bloodier than ever..

While all of her Ascension books have totally bowled me over, in a way The Darkening shows Caris Roane's true brilliance. The Darkening is the beginning book in her Ascension Novella Series.. about life that happens after the battle, these novellas will be about the Militia Warriors.. Like Gideon in Brink of Eternity. It is a compelling and wonderful story about finding one's destiny in all things.. just as all of her Ascension books are. What makes this book so exceptional is that it is a novella. I usually don't like novellas because they are usually just too short. But Caris does an absolute fabulous job writing a complete story in a short amount of words. This book read like a much longer one, that does not mean that it dragged on and on but that it told a complete and fascinating story!! Go Caris!!

After escaping 10 years of capture and torture Samuel Daman has a new power.. it is beyond powerful and something no one has ever seen on Second Earth before. He fears using it because the one time he did, during his esc ape, innocents were killed. He has no control over it. The only problem is.. if he doesn't unleash his power, Warrior Santiago will die.. He is battling 13 death eaters and no way will he manage to destroy them all. So Samuel releases his power and brings the wrath of the What-Bees on to his shoulders. A Demand for an explanation is made. Why had he hidden his powers? Did he not know that they were living in dark times and everyone MUST give their all? Why would he hide something this important from the What-Bees and Militia Warriors? Knowing that he no longer has a choice, he accepts that he must train and learn how to control his powers. At his initial training, he is overwhelmed by a scent of flowers so compelling he all but looses himself to it.

Vela Stillwell, has loved desperately and deeply.. she lost her Militia Warrior Husband five years previously and has lived in darkness ever since. All she wants is to finally escape her job at HQ and move to work with the blood slaves in the clinic that Fiona has created. She wants to help others heal, since she knows how deeply an attack and escape from Death Eaters can be. She knows she can help. The only problem is, she started having dreams.. finding herself looking at battles as they happen but from a distant place. A Darker world where the edges seem blurred. She has no clue that her Darkening powers have emerged and Destiny has a different roll for her to play. While she fights her dreams she is suddenly struck by the breh-hedden . and suddenly her entire world has tilted on it's axis and all she can do is hang on and enjoy the ride.

Samuel and Vela are absolutely perfect for each other. Each protects their inner core in their own way, letting things that have happened in their pasts control what is happening now. Their entire lives are lead in a way that shields them from others. Sure Vela seems more open. less distant but this is the greatest way to protect one's inner self. Distraction, illusion, smoke and mirrors. Samuel lives a more obviously lonely life. The lone wolf.. ready to defend but his wall his thicker, stronger and more obvious. Too bad those walls like the ones at Jericho must come down!

Sent on a mission to save the one man Samuel claims as a friend, Vela and Samuel find themselves wandering The Darkening on Third Earth. Learning that all is not well on Third and that there are those who want the powers from Second to help destroy Third. They also find help in some very unexpected places.

There is so much going on in this book that it is just hard to fathom it is only a Novella!! It reaches in and grabs your emotions and compels you to feel for these two. To share their journey and to wonder at all that they accomplish. I am so glad that Caris finished the battle with Greaves and yet didn't force us to leave Second Earth and her awesome Vamps.. This is such a lush creation that to leave it forever would just about break my heart.. There will be several more Novellas based on the Militia Warriors but never fear, Caris has promised that their will be more books about the What-Bees we love!! After all Luken, Santiago and Zacharius still have to find their Brehs!

Enjoy all!

After the last installment, I had no idea really where things were going to go or if I would like the direction. Now I'm saying Greaves who? (Ms. Roane, I'm at your feet. Worshipping at the altar for Roane for the great transition to a new day for the series.) I absolutely loved the extremely athletic and flexible Samuel Daman and his inventive mate Vela Stillwell and their very different breh-hedden.
Samuel is so afraid of his new powers that he fears using it and would like it if no one knew or mentioned that he had it. Vela has unknowingly linked to Samuel but wants to ignore the power. Neither Samuel nor Vela want to be in a relationship but the breh-hedden will not be denied.
I liked that this episode took a new direction, had changes for the What-Bee's, new powers, new enemies and a great new villain. It definitely didn't hurt that Endelle is still a fashion don't and is as hilarious as ever! Or that the What-Bee's put forth a great deal of action and romance to keep the pages blurring. The only fault I could find with this installment is that it was too short for my taste. I am in love with the series all over again.

I felt like I was watching a movie rather than reading a book at times. Roane`s brilliant writing style and vivid descriptions call to you in such a way that you live this story. Being part of a series I was quite surprised to find that this book would be able to be read as a standalone without any trouble as to the world and what was going on in it.

I really appreciate how much thought and effort Roane put into this novel, and the series as a whole. She has put a huge spin on the much used vampire topic that will keep you captivated and provide you with an amazing world to lose yourself in. The interesting powers that these amazing beings have are definitely things that I`ve never seen before. That said, everything in the novel remains easy to picture and very down to earth and realistic. This thought and planning goes all the way down to the acronyms that she uses. They always made me giggle since they spelt the weirdest things, but I never once forgot them.

I found myself wanting to help the main characters through their trials, wanting for them to succeed. You really feel for these characters. The secondary characters were great and quite well developed. Most of them have their own stories in other novels in the series and the sister series so without reading them you won`t know the histories of these characters.

I really appreciate the fact that the love scenes actually serve a purpose in this novel. They solidify the relationship between the characters and give insight into the individuals as well. The dialogue was also very natural and never seemed forced. It also always served a purposed, never dragging on or overpowering the narrative. It helps develop the characters into individuals that you can really picture.

This is one of those novellas that I read all in one sitting without a second thought. I wanted to go out and buy the entire sister series by the time I reached the midpoint in the novel. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys romance and a real twist on the supernatural subgenre of vampires.

Please note that I received this novel free of charge from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I would like to thank Innovative Online Book Tours and Caris Roane for giving me the opportunity to read this book for review.
I love this book. I love it! I have loved this series since the very first book. I've read the first four books of the Guardians of Ascension series, and am looking forward to finding time to read the next in the series. Every time I hear a friend tell me she's looking for a good paranormal romance book, I always point her towards this series. It's just that good.
There is a jump in the last book of the series I read (#4) and this novella (#6.5), so there was some stuff that I didn't know, but I knew enough of the world to piece things together. So if you;re going to read this book, you really do need to start from the beginning of the series. The world is so well-built, and terminology is added in there, that isn't explained in the middle of the series.
There was only one thing that truly disappointed me in reading this book. One of the What-Bees (see...terminology!) that I like hasn't found his breh yet, and he really deserves a good one! So please Ms. Roane, if you're reading this review, please please find Luken a breh! He's such a sweetheart, he really deserves happiness.

****I was given a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review****

Vela has started having dreams about a warrior and on her last day of work her friends talk her into going to watch the men at the training center. While there she and the warrior Samuel start experiencing the breh-hedden. The two of them have to deal with their emerging powers, find a lost warrior and fight the growing war. Vela has to decide if she can face her fears and love a warrior again. Vela is a compassionate woman, with a lot of power. Samuel is a loner with a lot of guilt. I liked the storyline and the characters that surrounded the couple were interesting. Endelle was brash, with the mouth of a sailor and Merl was an unrepentant flirt. The action was intense, exciting and wonderfully descriptive. The sex scenes were hot and the connection that the two main characters shared added emotional depth to their lovemaking. I really enjoyed this book; my only complaint was that I was confused in the beginning. I had not read the first book in the series so when I started The Darkening it took me a little while to figure out what was going on

This book is one of those that sort of connects two series. Fans of the original Guardians of Ascension series will delight in this spin off featuring the Militia Warriors but have no fear as it's easy to just pick up and understand what's happening . Mortals can ascend to another life with powers beyond our wildest dreams and one who has done that is Samuel. Samuel is a powerful vampire type warrior who has spent years in captivity being tortured and whilst he was there he developed a new and deadly power that some refer to as Grayle. Samuel finds it incredibly difficult to control his newest power and is plagued by guilt at the loss of innocent lives but has no choice but to reveal his emerging abilities when one of the mighty What -Bees is surrounded by thirteen Death Vampires. Faced with no choice Samuel agrees to go and demonstrate just what he can do before the leader of the Warriors of the Blood but when he arrives he finds something he had no idea was waiting for him!
Vela is a widow and wants nothing more than to put war and fighting behind her and to that end she has trained to be a counsellor and is about to start her new job. She has tried to keep her head down but her well meaning friends are determined to give her one night of fun before she leaves. What no one expected was a chance meeting with a man that sets off every erotic sense in Vela's body! Just one look, just the slightest scent and then of course there is that moment when they touch! A volcanic passion erupts between them and heaven help any man who tries to separate them. But wait! What is happening? Two complete strangers and yet are they really strangers? Samuel is the man that Vela has dreamed of ( quite literally) and when she senses danger it seems Samuel is not the only one with an amazing new ability emerging as Vela can walk in the Darkening and not just that but control it too. This couple have a duty to defend their realm and indeed humanity but just what is happening between them and can they trust these new and totally insane needs that drive them?
I absolutely love these stories. Although I freely admit I seem to have read them out of order but it has not spoilt my enjoyment one iota. So many series seem to rehash old ideas but Ms Roane seems to constantly come up with new ways to entertain her readers. Yes it's a very steamy romance as the couple connect but it's also such fun readng about the antics of these larger than life characters . You have to be bowled over by Endelle the Leader of Second Earth with her crazy behaviour and don't get me started on the latest addition to the fold Merl. I predict a lot more to come from that particular gentleman but for now I'm happy to wallow in all the goodness that Samuel and Vela share, sigh! A true partnership and it's wonderful to share their journey . I love that Samuel is not a typical Vampire type hero and who doesn't want a strong heroine oh and her spider like reflexes to protect him? Hilarious !
This book ticked all my boxes and if you miss this series and you are a lover of paranormal romance then you are missing out on an amazing ride. If honest it's slightly shorter than I like but still a great read.

Commander Darian Greaves has been defeated; the portal to Third Earth opened and closed sealing the breach; the war for Second Earth should be over leaving Madame Endelle, the Warriors of the Blood, their Breh's, and the Militia Warriors to enjoy their hard won peace. Only on Second Earth, nothing is ever as simple as it should be. Three of Greaves generals escaped with a huge contingent of warriors and even more Third Earth Death Vampires are somehow slipping through the dimensions to continue the chaos.

Ever since his escape from his captors in Honduras Two, Samuel Daman has been struggling to keep his emerging dark powers under control while continuing to battling nightly beside his fellow Militia Warriors. However, when he witnesses Warrior of the Blood Santiago falter under the onslaught of eight Death Vampires, he releases his new powers aiding the Warrior in defeating the vamps and bringing himself to the attention of the What-Bees and Madam Endelle.

Ascender Vela Stillwell never wanted another warrior after the death of her husband and is anxious to start her new life as a counselor. But when her friends drag her to the training center to witness Samuel's first training session with the Warriors, the breh-hedden snares them both leading Vela into an exhibition of her own emerging Darkening powers. The pair quickly realizes that there's a new force threatening Second Earth and with their emerging Third Earth level powers they have become a target. Only by learning to control their powers and embracing the breh-hedden, will they have a chance to overcome the obstacles before them.

I've been a fan of Caris Roane since the beginning of her Guardians of Ascension series and the release of final installment, Gates of Rapture, in December 2012 was bittersweet. While I was happy to see that Greaves was defeated, but there were still so many stories that could be told. I didn't want it to end. I was thrilled when Caris announced that she was going to continue with a novella series, Dawn of Ascension, based on her Militia Warriors.

The Darkening packs a lot of story into this novella. So much so, that it reads like a full-length novel and is full of fast paced action. It was wonderful to reconnect with the characters that I fell in love with in the Guardians of Ascension series, while being introduced to and falling for new characters and the relationship between Samuel and Vela is HOT! I'm looking forward to more stories in this multi-dimensional world.

The Darkening, the second novella in Caris Roane's new Guardians of Ascension series, is a fast-paced, action-packed, sexy ride that will leave readers new and old wanting more.

Warrior Samuel has two big problems, the first being that his newly emerged, but deadly powers have been discovered (by whom?). The second is that the breh-hedden (a kind of bonding that begins with the affected pair being able to scent each other) has struck and is slowly taking over his thought process. He is the type of hero that really makes a romance thrive; the battered soul who, on the outside is deadly and fierce, but on the inside is lonely and unsure.

Vela Stillwell's plans for her future have been completely blown apart. On her last day at work the breh-hedden comes for her and the last thing she wants or needs is another warrior in her life. Widowed five years before, all she wants is a quiet, peaceful life away from men and the war that claimed her husband. She may seem like a quiet, reclusive female but she's more than willing to step out of her self-imposed exile if it means saving lives. She's gutsy, strong, and intelligent. Vela's strong reaction to Samuel is frightening to both of our leading characters, and with both Samuel and Vela fighting the breh-hedden, The Darkening adds an element of angst to action and romance.

What was truly enjoyable about this novella is that, like in the previous one, Brink of Eternity, there are a lot of details and there's a real story development in The Darkening. The pace of the story is fast but thorough, something that I've rarely found in novellas. Readers get a real sense of Caris Roane's style and are able to better judge if the full length novels are for them or not. In the past I have read and liked novellas by certain authors, only to be disappointed when I purchased a book by that author. Such is not the case here and that is something to consider when looking at these series.

As a new reader (this is only my second foray into the world Roane has created) I still found the terminology a little confusing but because I already knew the dictionary was located at the end of the book, reading went a little smoother. Still it is a little hard to keep up with the names of previous characters so I recommend reading the previous books before picking this one up.

Because Caris Roane has definitely piqued my interest with how detailed and complete her worlds are, I will (hopefully) be picking up all her previous books soon.

Before I start the review, I want to note that if you're reading the Dawn of Ascension books based on how their listed on Amazon, you might be lost reading The Awakening first. I looked at both this book's intro and The Darkening and the The Awakening had a couple listed that I hadn't read their story yet. So I read the Darkening's intro and that one mentions it's set a few months after Gates of Rapture, so I took a chance and read that one (listed #2 on Amazon) first. I'm reading The Awakening now, and my choice was right (that one starts with how The Darkening ended.

Now the review. I've been a fan of the Guardian of Ascension series, which is the pre-runner of the Dawn of the Ascension series. Even though all the books are complete for the main couple, it really helps to start at the beginning before tackling this story. There's so many things that has happened in the past books that continues through this series.
Samuel and Vela are two lost souls despite both being loners, find out they really do need each other. Complete with new powers and some new places to go. And a new person to add to the mix.
And get the fan out for the hot love scenes that are sprinkled throughout the book as Samuel and Vela work through the ever famous breh-hedden (for lack of description it's an all-consuming mating call that snares our couples). Keeping various parts to themselves is troublesome at times, but really the sex scenes fit nicely with the storyline. And if sex scenes aren't your thing, you can skim through but still read the dialog of Samuel and Vela, lest you miss something.
We also learn more about Third World and what it'll mean to our Second Worlders. A whole new set of the villains to hate and the death vamps are still a big problem, but add to this some Third World evil and there a good base for where this part of the story will take us in the future.
And finally, where does Endelle do her shopping. Her outfits are the fun part of the background things, just the imagination it takes to think them up in the first place.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We learn a little bit about Third Earth in this one as Samuel and Vela deal with the breh-hedden and finding their way together. Samuel fears the potential consequences of his new power birthed in his rage. Vela grieves the loss of her husband five years ago. They must work together to help another and Samuel must learn to use and control his new power to help in the expanding war being fought between good and evil.
Full of action, emotion, heat and touches of humor, this book is another winner. I loved seeing Samuel and Vela learn about themselves as they learned about each other, and as they grew into who they were meant to be, both as individuals and together.
Contemporary, Paranormal Romance
Phoenix, Arizona and Second Earth Phoenix
What he can’t fight is the breh-hedden that has her light floral scent tearing at his restraint. Then an enemy draws them both into the darkening. It is a place of secret travel reserved for Third ascenders. Samuel will have to learn to control his power or destroy what he desires most.
Vela Stillwell wants a life away from Militia Headquarters. A new life away from the reminders of her husband and all she lost when he died five years earlier. This is another book in a series that proves to have some amazing characters whether they are the lead characters or secondary characters or characters that are making a cameo appearance. For readers that love vampire books this is a series worth checking out and getting lost in. The world building and plots are unique and hold up and get better with each story that is told. The series takes the reader on an amazingly wild ride that will have them eagerly wanting the next book just to see where this journey will ultimately take them. Each story is different and manages to stay fresh with each and every story that is told.
Fearing his emerging powers, Samuel thwarts connections of any kind, hiding from grief, Vela wants a new life, but the breh-hedden sweeps through their lives and pulls them into an adventure that terrifies yet reveals truths in this sensational paranormal romance.
Giving in to the breh-hedden is that last thing that either Samuel or Vela want but the pull of the attraction between them is stronger than either could have imagined…so strong in fact that the reader gets pulled in right along with them as the chemistry grows hotter and stronger with every breath they take. The breh-hedden doesn’t care about their emotional issues so they will have to get their acts together especially since it’s not the only thing these strong compelling characters have to worry about as they demand the reader’s attentions and the fast paced and smooth flowing plot enthralls readers with lots of suspense, action and passion.
Both Vela and Samuel’s powers are growing and emerging into something new even with Samuel holding back because of the darkness but their powers may be the only thing that can save them when they realize just how deadly the war has become with new and unexpected enemies and spine tingling suspense and excitement build throughout as the danger escalates. The well written scenes and details paint vivid images that bring the story to life and the well orchestrated events draw the readers in and refuse to let go.
This fascinating and complex world just gets better and better with lots of interesting and unique elements that stand out in reader’s minds and makes each and every intriguing character vibrate with intriguing possibilities and sexy charisma that ensures that I love each and every one of them…I really would have a hard time picking a favorite so I just will keep my heart open and add more as they come.
I had already purchased this book back when it was originally released. But I have recently joined Caris's beta readers and was kindly provided with an ARC for my review.
I had already given this book a 5 stars, so we were on an obvious winner there. I merely needed to relay why ?
Here we go.....
This book contains one hell of a fantastic, smoldering, swoon worthy hero !
And our heroine is a women haunted by her past. Afraid to love again......
Smokin' combination right ?
If you have not read any of the guardians of the ascension series then fellow readers YOU NEED TO GET RIGHT ON WITH THAT.
Caris provides an amazingly detailed insight into this world of warrior hero's and they journey to find their "breh". Honestly, you just eat up the story. There is so much humor within each book that you will literally laugh out loud !!!. I found myself sighing, willing each of the warriors (who I might add Caris provides mighty fine descriptions) to get their gal's (so to speak).
I was so enthralled by this series a kept a check on when the next book was to be released and had it on pre-order faster than you can blink an eye.
I also proudly introduced my friends to "second earth" and boy were they hooked.
And so my job is done. I have hopefully wet your appetites. Please give this a go. It really will have you addicted.
I am waiting patiently for Caris to introduce a brunette with green eyes as one of the Breh's with coincidentally the name Donna *cough*. A girl can dream !!!
Many thanks for the ARC. Later Peeps xx
The story of Samuel and Vela, Vela is leaving her job to pursue being a counselor something she has been studying for, for a long time. Not just reluctant but absolutely opposed to a relationship because of her husband's death 5 years ago she is tired of being around warrior's constantly avoiding any contact with them. Samuel tortured for over a decade has his own objection to a relationship of any kind as well. He has been in a dark place for a very long time. Just a year out of being rescued his and Vela's world collide at just the wrong or right time. They are caught up in an ancient mating ritual the second that they step into the same room. While the two of them are caught up in this age old ancient mating 'magic' they have to learn how to work together and use their powers together in order to help win this battle in a new war that has just begun as well as help save a friend that helped rescue Sam and has now been captured himself. With new characters and returning characters from the Guardians of Ascension series this is definitely a must read, if you haven't read the other series like I haven't I would suggest that you read those since the characters that make an appearance may be better understood. Lots of perilous adventures and trust to be gained by each of the characters because without trust this relationship and battle will be lost forever. Some definite surprises in store that have you right up until the end.
Samuel has only had a year of freedom after being rescued by Duncan and, for various reasons, is content to keep his distance from one and all. Vela is also keeping her distance but hers are more specific. She is avoiding all the militia warriors as she has already lost her husband to the war and wants to avoid being hurt any further. However, the breh-hedden has other ideas and these two become entangled within its sensual and overpowering grasp. Samuel has his power that he is afraid of, as he can't control it. Vela also comes into her power of being able to travel via the Darkening. A match has been made but will they work together or fall apart?
This is a brilliant story that straddles two series without being at all complicated for those not completely au fait with them. It is exciting and thrilling, whilst being heartbreaking in places too. Samuel has the opportunity to pay Duncan back for rescuing him but will he be too late? This book will grip you and leave you breathless, both for the sexy scenes but also for the action and 'behind the scenes' you get.
Thoroughly enjoyable and definitely recommended to all.
Widower Vela Stillwell is anxious to start her new position away from Militia Headquarters, having lost her husband in battle, she wants to be far removed from getting close to another warrior again. When she attends a demonstration and sees Warrior Samuel Daman, everything changes even if she plans to fight it along the way. The breh-hedden is in full force between Samuel and Vela, but what is even more strange is together they both find their emerging powers are becoming more powerful. When Samuel's best friend goes missing, Vela is by his side in trying to find him before it is to late and trying to make a decision about their future without the pull of the breh-hedden is becoming increasingly difficult.
I have been a huge fan of Caris Roane since reading Ascension, her brilliant ability to write a story where you can visualize every second of each characters action is phenomenal. Typically her books are outside of my reading comfort zone because of the kind of fantasy portion, but it does not matter she has a way of creating a setting you can easily visualize. I can always be guaranteed a thrilling experience while reading one of her books. She just keeps getting better and better.
The Darkening, a novella in the series “Dawn of Ascension” was a good read. The romance, if you can call it that, seemed too rushed and as a couple, their characters just didn’t click. I did like the character of Samuel and the powers he had that came from experiments done while he was held captive by a third world villain. Just couldn’t connect with Vela’s character, even though her developing powers made a great read, maybe it was the fact that she was always thinking/talking about her husband, this kind of put a damper on the romantic feelings between the her and Samuel. The action scenes were well written and we were given information on the war which is escalating on second earth and that there is a war also happening on third earth. We meet a new character, Merl, whom sounds very interesting and receive some very disturbing information on Duncan and Rachel (hope this doesn’t come true). The best character is still Endelle, her story when it is written will be the best – she is so crass, says anything she wants and has a dry sense of humor that is unparallel. Biggest complaint is that this “Dawn” series will be written in the format of novellas. The “Guardians” were so very good and these would be also, if they were written as full length novels.
I have read all the other books in the Guardians of Ascension series and was glad to finally get Samuel's story. This is a novella that follows Samuel after his rescue from a prison on Third Earth. He has a powerful gift that he is struggling with to control. He meets Vela, his breh-hedden as she is leaving for a new assignment. Vela has the power of the darkening and is more powerful than she, or anyone, knows. Combined with Samuel's power they take on Third Earth to rescue Duncan.
I love how Caris writes these stories. While most series can get a bit tedious after 4-6 books hers stay fresh as each Warrior has a different power. There is a lot of story line packed into such a short book. It grabbed me and kept me reading it. I did finish it in on sitting and wanted more. This is one series I keep coming back to and wish that there were more books. If you like vampires and steamy sex along with a great story then these books are for you!
I wish that there was a book about Endelle…. maybe one day her story will be told.
Returning to the world of Ascension, just reminded me how much I loved reading the series. This book with Samuel and Vela picks up where the series leaves off, it is like I never left it. It is the second novella in the spin off series Dawn of Ascension, and it stands up against the full novels in the series and doesn't hold anything back. There is only one moment that I thought, "man this is moving way to fast and how embarrassing this scene must be for the characters involved," and that was the very first scene the two main characters meet, in a gym full of people, when the Breh-hedden hits them hard. Beyond that, one scene, I got behind the plot, conflict, and characters 100%. It was fast-paced, entertaining, and very rarely was it dull. After that one moment in the gym there were no other "yeah, right, that would never happen" moments. Loved this story. I have to admit I was a little disappointed when Roane ended her Ascension series, right when the war seemed to be coming to a pivotal moment, but the spin off is not disappointing. Two very enthusiastic thumbs up!
THE DARKENING ( Dawn of Acension Series ) picks up right after GATES OF RAPTURE ( Guardians of Ascension Series ). You don't have to read the Guardians of Ascension first but it will help understand with some back stories as you read THE DARKENING. This book focus on Warrior Samuel and Vela. Caris wastes no time in getting you right into this book. Samuel has a power he didn't realize he had till he was held in captivity, problem, he can't control it and he is afraid he will hurt innocent people with it. We are introduced to Vela who we find out lost her husband to the war and wants nothing to do with militia warriors. When the two of them come together it is instant combustiblity. Together they make an amazing team, Vela enhances Samuel's powers while Samuel helps develop powers Vela never knew she had. Caris takes us deep into this war and gives us new clues as to what the Guardians need to do to stop this war. Loved Samuel and Vela, their chemistry was off the charts!!! And of course Endelle, love her!!! Endelle is the leader, with one hell of a mouth. Can't wait till her book comes out.
Reading this amazing story makes me feel like I was actually there watching it all happen. If you are ever in need of an escape, this story and series will make you forget everything but the gorgeous, sexy, muscular vampire warriors. That's what happened to Vela when she smelled his dark chocolate scent. When Samuel smelled her floral scent, he lost control. They didn't even know each other but they couldn't stay away from each other. Their powers combined are stronger but he fears his power will not only kill the bad guys but kill any of the good guys that are in the way. That includes Vela! Can these two loners learn to love and work with each other. Let's hope so because second earth needs them!
I love the imagination of Caris Roane! The action is intense and everything that happens has a reason behind it. Fabulous cast of characters. Endelle is hilarious! Her clothing choices are out of this world! I can't wait to read more!
Warrior Samuel escaped torture and imprisonment. He fears he can't control the dark power that allowed his freedom. But when a fellow warriors life is on the line he risks everything to save him. And exposes a power no one knew he had. Faced with the concept of being pushed to become a warrior of the blood he thinks things can't get any worse. And then he meets Vela. She's a beautiful blonde with a whole lot of power and a higher calling even she cant comprehend. Samuel has no self control around her, no rational thoughts. For a man who wanted a solitary existence, having a breh is not ideal. But when Vela discovers that his one friend is in need of rescuing everything changes. He must harness a power he fears and a woman he doesn't know to go into the darkening and save a man who'd once saved him. I really enjoyed this action packed journey back to second earth. Caris Roane did a great job on these characters and I believe Samuel and Vela will be very important in the coming books. Copy gifted in exchange for an honest review
This world is completely addictive. I find that I can't read these books fast enough and can't wait for the next pair of fated mates!
Samuel feels like a dark warrior after his long captivity. They forced him to develop a talent that he feels he cannot control and is not "pure." The last thing he wants is to subject a woman to his tainted lifestyle. Unfortunately, fate has something else to say about it. The moment Vela and Samuel "scent" each other, they can't keep off one another. This bonding really took the chemistry and turned it up a notch!
Vela's character has suffered also. She lost her husband and has since sworn off fighters. Luckily the bonding has really turned her world upside down and she's forced to re-evaluate her choices. This, coupled with her new power in the darkening (a world that connects others), have this pair working together whether they like it or not. I'm excited about all the new character introductions and hopeful for followup for all of them (and mates!).
Novellas, even ones that are more lengthy at 2500+ kindle pages like this, are never my preferred reading type - I always feel short changed. Part of the good but not great score given to this latest in Roane's overall Vampire Series. The feel that missing 'stuff' would have helped flesh this story out and given more context to the storyline - including the romance - is tied to the shortness of the book...you can not read this tale and understand what is going on and even when you know, it's still...missing something.
The first time the H/h 'meet' is hot - hotter than some of the novels in the earlier series actually...but the ongoing romance just isn't enough.
As long as the next book is a full story and the goodness continues, I'd say skip this tale.
I always enjoy reading anything Caris writes. You can tell how much passion she puts into each of her works and it's never a let down. The way she details everything, I can picture the whole book in my head with ease. Now for a little preview of this book: Samuel is a warrior who is afraid to hurt anyone so he keeps them all at bay. Vela is a woman who is tired of the war and wants nothing to do with it or any warrior. So the last thing either one wanted is the breh-hedden to happen. As you read this book you'll see them fight to stay alive, figure out what the breh-hedden means to them, and the struggle they each face as their new paths unfold. *Copy gifted in exchange for an honest review.
Adventure meets one heck of a HOT romance!
This is one wild ride and I was more than happy to go on it.
Vela and Samuel are an interesting couple. I totally LOVED Vela and her determined spirit. Samuel with his over protecting and warrior insistent was a definite character to dream about.
The twists and turns made for a wonderful story. Falling in love for the main characters was something of a rough, smack in your face. The traveling through the darkness for both helping and trouble was down right exciting!
Caris Roane did a wonderful job with this story. I can honestly say I would read this again just to relive it all over.
I look forward to more from Caris!
The guardian of the Ascension series continues with love and power emerging in the Militia Warriors. Roane Ascension series brings back for a visit some of our best loved character pairs and of course Endelle the Leader of Second Earth. Samuel Daman and Vela Stillwell come to us with the vampire bonding ritual and their emerging Third Earth Dark Powers. These two are so lonely that their joining is mutually sought by each. A journey evolves that takes us on a paranormal ride into a world overflowing with loyalty, love, destiny and vampires with wings. Page turner and no cliff hanger!!
The Dawn of Ascension series is a pretty intense series of vampires that have ascended to Second Earth. I'm impressed with the fact that I haven't read the Guardians of Ascension series yet & these books relatively stand alone. This book has a much needed respite for both Samuel and Vela. Him from his life of solitude and past capture and her from her grief from her last husband. In each other they will find their futures as well as their happiness.
This is the second story in the Dawn of Ascension series and continues where the first book ended. Samuel is afraid of the new powers that he has and fears hurting people, he does his best to keep to himself. Vela wants to be away from the Militia Headquarters and the reminders of how she lost her husband. When the breh-hedden strikes neither is prepared for what will happen next. Great read, the characters really draw you in from beginning to end. I story is fast paced and held my interest, it was a great escape into the paranormal world.
