Myia, a shaman-in-training, wants desperately to protect her peaceful village from the barbaric Highland invaders. To hone her powers of prophetic visions and healing, the village elders send Myia on a quest: to heal the Highland warlord’s heart and stop a brewing war. Myia’s mended many souls before, so this should be an effortless duty . . . until she meets the gorgeous, stubborn Highland warlord.
ONE DESIRE
Kedric, a gladiator who escaped enslavement, only wants to liberate the villagers from their common foe—a race that breeds humans for blood sport and genetic experiments. Fueled by his rage, Kedric is determined to take down the brutal enemy. So when a raven-haired beauty with a body made for sin tries to sabotage his mission, Kedric wants her gone. Yet no woman’s touch has ever left Kedric more annoyed . . . and aroused. Kedric knows he should shun her soothing embrace-but he can’t seem to stay away. As their passion grows, Kedric must decide between fighting his war or surrendering his rage—and his heart—for Myia’s love.

Wow what a change from the first book. I didn't like the hero or the heroine. I didn't like their motives. They had no believable chemistry with each other. The story was slow. The hero was stupid. There was a mistake in the timeline between this book and the first one that bugged me. There wasn't enough action.
Ok going to blame the 3oth cup of coffee and the severe book hang over to this book. I curled up on the couch and started reading , the only time I put the book down was to go and restock the popcorn supply. I don't think I have had a book the capitivated me more then this book. It has so many components to it is a sci fi thriller but also a romance story between two people . Myia a young shaman in training, who is going to try and heal the soul of the highlanders that are taking their men and boys. Kedri is a gladiator, who is the king of the highlanders and only wants to help defeat the things that held him captive. Together they must help each other and defeat and rescue the humans that are captured.
This is the second book in the series but I found that you could read it as a stand alone. I had no trouble following along with the story line. The twists and turns of this book will keep you on the edge of your seat. The Highlanders seem like they only want the best for the low land people. but they don't see it that way. They just want to live their lives but when they get to the highlanders island , they can be free there The author blends the past, the present and the future aspects of the story seamlessly. You can see the island set up and when you read it , you feel the story go along seamlessly. This is a great mixture of the sci fi and mystery.
The sub plot of Kedric and Myia's love story is steamy. You have the young basically naïve girl and the big brooding alpha man. She falls in love with him and wants to heal him from his pain. All Kedric wants is revenge . As they grow closer and finally let their real feelings come to light. You see Myia blossom and come into her full potential and you see Kedric become a more honorable gladiator and king. K.M writes some steamy scenes between the two of them. You also see the love that is blossoming between them and then the true love that they have for each other as they realize that they are life mates. But it was really rough at the beginning . I kind a wanted to shake Kedric and slap him upside the head cause he was so pig headed. But when it came to Myia he wanted to protect her and love her for all time. You will love these characters cause they have flaws and are scared some of the time. They are real people with their own problems and hang ups. But as a reader you want to cheer for them and want them to fall in love, have their happily ever after.
I still can't believe how flawlessly the author combined all the elements and made it work seamlessly. It really just blew my mind So if you love a great science fiction, mystery, romantic paranormal read . This book has it all for you. Just heed this warning be prepared for a massive book hangover and the consumption of large quantities of whatever you eat while book reading. This is well worth it . Your mind will be blown away when the past, present and the future all meet in one book . This would be a great read for those long summer nights sitting by the fire or by the pool on a hot afternoon.

Interesting story, with the humans gaining some special powers, too, over the millennium they have been on the alien planet 🌍.
This is the follow up book to Captive and a fantastic piece of sci fi romance. Whilst so many in this genre seem to be strictly erotica this author has written a series to truly immerse yourself in. Whilst I have absolutely nothing against a sexy read I found the world building here to be truly fascinating. Set on an alien planet we meet Myia an eighteen year old shamen in training who is sent by her father to try to persuade the war lord Kedric to abandon his plans for revenge and retribution against the barbaric aliens. Kedric had been used as a gladiator before he escaped and knows first hand just what cruelty can feel like. Myia has her work cut out though as it's not an easy thing to persuade Kedric that healing his spirit could help save them all. He's determined to keep Myia a prisoner until he can convince her to persuade her fellow villagers to join him in fighting . However his fascination for the raven haired beauty just might have something to do with it! War seems inevitable but betrayal could be close at hand. Can Kedric lead his people to victory and if he does will he lose Myia? Very good follow up to Captive. The first book explored being taken prisoner by aliens and trying to survive whereas this book explored the idea of living as a native on a planet dominated by a brutal race. Fans of the first book will be delighted to catch up with characters from the previous book and new readers will surely be clamouring to catch up! Recommended
This book felt good. Epic, intriguing and captivating. I’ve run out of synonyms for just how damn interesting I found this sci-fi romance to be. Right away we meet Kedric (gawd, even his name is sexy). He is a new king, former gladiator who is now the leader of Pele. Kedric is raising an army to defeat the Hyboreans, the despicable alien race who enslave captured humans to fight gladiators- or to breed upon or otherwise abuse and amuse. To build his army, Kedric is forcefully kidnapping low land villagers and as a result is set in the sights of the shaman who wants to stop his raiding. Kedric is a brooding, ALPHA male who is too stubborn to deal with his own emotional scars and mistakes. For him, the end justify the means. He needs an army to defeat the Hyboreans, and he believes the wildling low landers who live in the forest need to be brought into the modern times anyway, so why not kill two birds with one stone. Where he is darkness and revenge, heroine Myia is peace and light. She is a young shaman and though she is quite naive, she falls for Kedric almost at once, and the story of their romance is rewarding.
Fearless is complex and easy to spoil, but you had better block out time to read this because you will be quite unsettled and disturbed if you have to put this book down for more than a moment. It is the second in the series, however, it stands strong as a stand alone, you will have not the slightest difficulty following the arc and story line. The world building is done superbly. I for one detest pages and pages of rehashed world building. I rather it be done succinctly and right, than try to cram an encyclopedia worth of “facts about this world” in between the action. Fawcett builds a dangerous world and her characters have to fight to survive. Though danger is abundant, there is so much character to the….well to these characters that even knowing what troubled times they endured, I often found myself smiling through the pain and fear. Kedric was uber impressive. As a king, and as a fighter. But possibly even more so, simply as a man, thrown off balance by a young woman who confounded him:
“He couldn’t help but laugh. Her honest spunk was like nothing he’d ever before experienced from a woman. Savage Myia would not back down nor be intimidated by the nearly naked Highland warlord. Sure, nudity was commonplace among the peoples of Pele, but usually when he removed his pants in front of a woman, it elicited some sort of reaction. A gasp. A blush. A glance of approval. Something…
Damn. She irritated him.”
The rawness and realism that Fawcett weaves into her story makes it exceptionally credible. In this world, Humans are little more than pets and are treated as cattle. It was telling that Kedric saw Myia as a savage, due to her way of life, when even though his people were more advanced and scientifically inclined, it was this beautiful little savage whose abilities saved him in the end. The idealist in me, believes that her father, who set Myia upon Kedric’s path, knew in spite of all evidence to the contrary that she could use her shaman ability to heal his soul and heart.
Myia is so very well written and though she has her own internal battles and scars she is able to really shine and when she heals, you can feel the warmth from the page! I had to stop and check myself as I suspected the little savage had managed to heal me as well. I can honestly say that this is probably one of the most pure of heart heroines that I have come across in a very long time. You want to console her when she believed she would never heal his soul. You want to protect her and club Kedric over the head when he is mistrustful or wants to turn her out. Luckily he could not banish her if he tried!
The tale is a suspenseful one with multi-layered resolution. There is no telling formula for this book, you are forced to let go and just wing it and see what will become of these characters. I found it refreshing and sensual, there was such beauty in their coming together. I knew I was a goner when I found myself googling Highland temptress and amateur seductress apparel…(Don’t judge. See. There. Hey you. Stop that judging!) heh heh.
As beautiful as the love story turns out to be. It is not without its atrocities, none less so than when we relive the horror of being captured through Kedric’s eyes:
“Imagine you are a gladiator in the survival race. The last thing you remember is a blade across your throat. The next is reawakening on a table with your arms and legs strapped down.”
He gripped her hand, preventing her from backing away farther. His eyes went wild. His breathing labored. This was not the man she knew…some ugly, hidden demon from within had taken over.
“Imagine a Hyborean’s scalpel cuts into your skin just above your wrist restraints. The monster takes hold of your flesh between its leathery fingers…your flesh burns while it’s peeled away from muscle. You scream…as you watch yourself get skinned alive. No Myia, you’ve no idea what it’s like to be scared.”
The passion simmers and then boils over…o-ver…let’s just say big hearted Myia, the tawdry little savage (sarcastic snort) does a little….dance for Kedric that is…uhh….memorable. Ahem.
Make your next read this Romancy, sci-fi, paranormal and a smidge of historical content love affair! The returning couple from Survival Races Book 1, Captive, Addy and Max make an appearance and I have moved their book to the top of my TBR pile!
Eeeeh! I struggle to find a criticism. My chief complaint- that it ended. What I needed more from- nothing! False. I immediately take that back. If this book was just a little heavier on the wild and reckless sexy times (because I mean come on that’s my kink) it would be utter perfection. But as it is, I am more than happy to settle for a hot romance with a fantastic world build and story arc.
There were a lot of moving parts to this story and some of it mad no sense couple that with some of it seeming to stray into modern day colloquium I found it hard to really connect with the story.
Myia would be a bit naïve and insecure one minute and the next womanly and worldly then we would be back to insecure.
As a leader Kedric would make some emotional decisions that was not befitting a leader. Then he would become all possessive one minute then I don’t care the next. It’s like there were times where he didn’t consider the consequences of his actions and it was full steam ahead no matter what.
There were some parts that I did get drawn into with certain motivations and misconceptions, but on the whole I spent a lot of my time on the periphery of the story and not as fully immersed, as I would have liked.
I received an advance reader copy and I am leaving a voluntary review.
Five stars for K.M. Fawcett's FEARLESS, a passionate, beautiful, and gripping fantasy romance.
I'm going to blame my recent insomnia on the amazing, fascinating, and intriguing books I've read recently. Last night I sat down to reread - slowly - K.M. Fawcett's Fearless (The Survival Race Book Two). I knew that Fearless would be a book I didn't want to read on deadline, so I put off sitting down to "really" read it for a few days till I could clear my schedule.
My intent was to read a little last night and then finish it early this morning. Instead I read and read and read it last night, not closing the cover on my Kindle till the last page was turned. What an absolutely fascinating story!
If you haven't read K.M. Fawcett's The Survival Race series yet, I'd advise you to start with the first book, Captive, as you'll want to know what transpired, even though Fawcett is quite adept in letting the reader know the high points of what had occurred previously. But this is a new world you should be introduced to from the beginning, the world of Hyborea, where aliens abduct humans to serve as gladiators or brood mares for their amusement.
Unlike Captive, the majority of the action for Fearless takes place on an island that the Hyboreans can't reach, so the island's inhabitants are essentially free. However, even amongst the free there are those in society who seek to force their will on others, and the opening of the book shows an assault by the warlord/king of a Highland community on a small village, where the menfolk and their mates are abducted.
Kedric, the warlord, is in search of men to fill his army for a planned assault on the Hyboreans. As an escapee from their freezing cold city and the son of someone who 'loves' his Hyborean master, Kedric's feelings towards this master race are antagonistic - to put it mildly. Myia, a shaman-in-training from the village he assaulted, is charged by her shaman father to seek Kedric out to heal him, before their community and way of life is destroyed.
Myia makes her way to Kedric's kingdom, which is quite technologically and medically advanced to her lowland eyes. Her skill as a shaman is to enter into the body of someone and heal their soul. The first person she attempts to heal, a guard at the gate, does not react well to this foreigner's spirit virtually entering his body and assaults her. When Kedric first meets her she is both unconscious and bruised, but his immediate reaction to her as a woman, even in that condition, is telling.
I found the growing romance between Kedric and Myia, once they were able to admit their mutual attraction, quite beautiful. Fawcett is someone who is able to not only convey the evident physical passion, with some steamy encounters, but also the soul-deep quality of true love. Wait for the description of Miya's dance for Kedric. Quite a highlight within the story. It was wonderful to see the return of Max and Addy from book one and to catch up on their lives too.
The concept that someone, a shaman-in-training, who could mitigate the aggressiveness that causes war and the desire to harm others was quite beautiful. I could only wish that we could duplicate that, in truth, in this world too. For those of us looking to role models, Gandhi and the Dalai Lama, among other spiritual leaders spring to mind. Perhaps we should all take a few moments each day to contemplate that. (I think Myia's soul healing ways transcended the page!)
I deeply admire Fawcett's ability to create and instill this world of Hyborea with life and a reality that jumps through the page. This really was a story I could not put down and now just want to read more, more, more from this new - and highly talented - writer.
So, in conclusion, I will highly recommend that if you like fantasy, paranormal, and/or historical romance (yes, there is a historical element to these books too), or just a truly fabulous love story, that you add K.M. Fawcett's The Survival Race to your must-read list.
I'm awarding five stars to K.M. Fawcett's Fearless, a passionate, beautiful, and gripping fantasy romance.
As someone who reads a lot, I am always on the lookout for something different and exciting. Ms. Fawcett gave me just what I have been looking for in the second book of her The Survival Race series, FEARLESS. Not only is FEARLESS a compelling romance, Ms. Fawcett has magically weaved in many of the sub-genres of the romance world in this exciting tale.
FEARLESS is a unique blending of romantic suspense, fantasy and science fiction with a very historical feel. I know what you are thinking right now. HOW? I honestly don’t know how she was able to do what seemed like to me, brings the past, the present and the future all in one place and time. I love world building. Ms. Fawcett’s world of the Survival Series is unlike anything I have read before and thoroughly enjoyed get caught up in all the craziness!
Our star couple of this story are very much alike but yet so different at the same time. Kedric is sexy, strong and determined. Lord of the escaped humans, he is truly trying to make life better for all humans. Kedric has very good intentions but in the eyes of some is going about it the wrong way. Myia is still finding her place as a shaman. She’s a sweet woman with a huge heart. She too wants nothing more than the good of her people. Myia makes it her mission to heal the Lords soul so he will stop taking her people. Both of these characters have an amazing depth and wonderful personalities to them. Kedric and Myia both are willing to go the lengths for what they believe is the right thing to do. As the attraction and sexual tension begins to develop, Ms. Fawcett shows the readers that opposites really do attract.
Hands down FEARLESS by K.M. Fawcett is an adventure of a read. Believe me you will be staying up past your bed time reading this one. From the first page I was sucked in like a vortex and could not put the kindle down. The mixing of so many aspects of the romance has created a compelling world that is described with vivid detail that I happily got lost in. Myia and Kedric made me fall in love with them before they were a couple and even more so after. I will say this FEARLESS is a romance read like no other. If you are looking for a different kind of read that still has all the heat and passion this is your book. I highly recommend this books to anyone who likes the follow: paranormal, historical, suspense and sci-fi!
This novel was excellently written and edited, with beautifully constricted sentences and no typos or editing mistakes that I caught in the ARC version of this manuscript. The world building of both the books in this series is creative and vibrant, with the alien world and it's different cultures described deftly. The characterization in this novel was excellent, just like it was in the first novel in this series. The hero and heroine were both complicated, vibrant, sympathetic individuals. The development of the romantic relationship in this second novel in this series was also excellent, developing naturally and organically and making me the reader really believe in their love and devotion to each other. That was the one big weakness of the first novel in this series, but the author nailed it in this second novel in the series. The plot and pacing of this novel was exciting and interesting, with me sitting on the edge of my seat close to the end of this novel wondering if the hero was going to allow the heroine to spiritually heal him before he made a terrible decision to start an unwinnable war with the Hyborians. There was a medium amount ot of angst in this novel on the hero's part, which I enjoyed in a novel where the heroine was a spiritual healer sent to heal his trauma. The angst was caused by the plot and setup of the book and the high stakes in the novel. I can enjoy angst when it is the natural result of high stakes and the setup of a novel. That is one of my preferred narrative structures for a romance novel. I don't typically enjoy novels with low stakes, or even worse, low stakes AND high angst. This novel employees the Enemies to Lovers trope and the Make Love, Not War trope. The world building, plot, and pacing in this novel rated five stars. The characterization and development of the romantic relationship also rated five stars. The combined star rating for this novel was, therefore, five stars. This novel ends on a Happy Ever After ending instead of a cliffhanger, so that is a big plus to this novel. I recommend this novel to readers who enjoy sci-fi novels or sci-fi romance novels. I think this novel has strong cross-genre appeal, since the author nailed both the genre romance element and the genre sci-fi element in this novel. I plan to buy myself a keeper copy of this novel.

Kedric is now the king of Pele and he is determined to destroy the Hyboreans. He needs men for his army, which is why he is invading the lowland villages and taking the men. After her village is invaded and her father is wounded, Myia is sent to Kedric to heal him. She is a shaman-aprendi and has the ability to heal another’s soul. She is hoping to set her people free and heal Kedric enough for him forget about the war he is intent on waging. Kedric is drawn to Myia and is determined to get her to agree with his point of view. Yet she is determined to change his mind. Let the battle begin. After making things worse, Myia believes herself a failure. No matter what she does, she can’t seem to change Kedric’s course of action. In fact she moves up his timeline. Kedric guards his soul and won’t even admit to himself what really drives him to attack the Hyboreans. He knows what they do to humans and is obsessed with freeing his father and sister. Myia has to be strong and accepting of him and herself. She will never heal him enough to alter the course put into action if she doesn’t realize her true capabilities and the feelings in her heart.
This is the second book in the series for this author. It picks up where the first book, Captive, left off. Kedric was saved by a fellow gladiator named Max. He was able to escape from the Hyboreans and become leader at a human sanctuary. The author created a world where humans are pets and considered animals. Kedric is an escaped human deciding to fight back. The main characters from Captive are back and join in the Fearless storyline. I really like when authors do that. These characters added fuel to the dilemma between Myia and Kedric. Their battle of wills invited the reader into the story choosing sides. I enjoyed watching Myia plan how she was supposed to heal Kedric. The author made her a likable character with normal human flaws that balanced out her gift of spiritual healing. In the end they are forced to work together to succeed in their missions of peace and rescue. The storyline was intriguing and a great addition to the continued series from this wonderful author. I give it a 4 out of 5.
If I hadn’t already known it the fact that this is the sequel to Captive would be hard to believe. I loved Captive and was looking forward to a book that would be similar to it. I wasn’t expecting something so different. Yes it takes place on the same planet; yes there are difficulties with the planet’s indigenous people. What’s different is apparently that there is a sect of people who have grown far away from a past of being escapees from being pets and knowing of the hardships human’s had to deal with when brought to this planet and bred like puppies for certain characteristics. Mya was too new-agy and all about the spirits and ... meditating. She meditated *a lot* in this book. Got a problem? Gonna meditate about it. She was too much of a Mary sue for me. I confess a big part of it might be because of the “soul healing” she did a lot of. I just didn’t get it too well. Kedric was pretty typical for a former gladiator and leader of a people built from remnants of humans who escaped enslavement on Hyborea. I get his gun-ho plan to invade and crush the indigenous, but c’mon there is no way, no matter how many men you have, that they would be able to eradicate the Hyboreans. You know the people who use telepathy for their technology and mastered space travel? I was really interested in learning how they adapted from having nothing to re-inventing tools and devices from Earth and creating a new society. I feel like I missed a good portion of the story of humans on Hyborea. I wish there was a book in the series about that. I think it would have made this book a better fit to Captive. I still liked this book, but not as much as I enjoyed Captive. I find the world really interesting and feel that there is a good basis for more books to come and I truly look forward to another book set in this world. Humans are wily little things and I want to see how they over throw the Hyboreans.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout for an honest review I really enjoyed reading this book.
So, what I liked about this book: 1. The author's style of writing was clear, easy to follow and understand. 2. Worldbuilding - it was interesting, in-depth and believable. 3. Main characters - Myia and Kedric.
I loved Myia's character, she is down to earth, gentle, kind and compassionate soul, something I can easily relate to. Despite her inner resilience and strength, she was also battling self-doubts especially with her ability to be an as good and wise shaman as her father.
In the beginning, Kedric was portrayed as this cruel warlord with no compassion, however we were able to glimpse the real truth that he was also a kind and compassionate person when he used his blood to heal Myia's bruises and swollen eye.
I loved how their love story progressed, built trust and respect, put their differences behind and worked together for the common good (don't want to spoil the end of the story), so won't go into who they saved.
If you like enemies to lovers then this is a book for you.
This book caught me off guard with how much I ended up enjoying the story. With that being said, it did feel a bit confusing at times, but I think that could just been because I haven’t read anything by this author in the past and didn’t completely understand this authors writing style. I did enjoy the characters throughout the story because no matter how minor of a role they had, they were still given an amazing personality and ability to keep you drawn into the story. I did end up enjoying this book more than I thought that I would, and I loved how the main characters were both strong and not willing to compromise until it was necessary. I did feel a bit confused, but I think that might be because this is the second book in the series. I do plan on going back and reading the first book at some point in the future, and I will also be sure to look into other books by this author in the future.

This is a story of love conquering all. The characters are well developed with complex feelings and pasts. A small group of humans fight for freedom from an opposing alien race while another group only wants peace. The twists and turns that are discovered buried in a person's soul can change to vision of what is reality. These characters grow and change throughout the story. While discovering themselves and each other, love is found. A great HEA story!
